‘…o.’

The same voice, at the same time every night, rouses me from sleep. It’s that hazy boundary where my drowsy consciousness drifts against the sharp edge of an insomnia-laden subconscious.

‘…ont.’

I don’t know.

Whose voice is it? Who is he?

Whether it’s a hallucination, a memory, or a nightmare—he wakes me every night at the same time.

‘Don’t fall asleep!’

…!

At his command, I wake, drenched in cold sweat, struggling to peel back my hair clinging to my face like wet seaweed.

The time is 12:03 a.m., exactly 180 seconds past midnight.

In the dense darkness, where it’s impossible to tell whether my eyes are open or shut, the only thing I can do is count the sound of the ticking second hand.

One, two, three… up until the 3,599th, and then the 3,600th second.

Then, a soft, fading sound.

A subtle click, followed by the sense of something receding. The sound of the hallucination ending, or perhaps the sound signifying its end. At last, I feel a faint relief, leaning my bare, sweat-chilled body back against the damp sheets.

“…Can I sleep now?”

I asked, but there was no answer.

The lingering, chilling fear from that voice, and the confusion it draped over me like a shadow, finally began to mutate into something like sleep in the early hours of dawn. In the faint blue light, my eyelids slowly sank shut.

I was fifteen, around that time.

When my foster father was mu*dered, and my mother began to be devoured by schizophrenia.

That’s when my insomnia started.

Whether it was a hallucination, subconsciousness, or a nightmare, something would always wake me around midnight.

Since there isn't a review yet, I want to write a bit to give an insight on the story.

MC comes off as a homophobe at the start because he is averse to male attention but the phobia/discomfort with men's attention isn't written against homosexuality. It's purely from the perspective of how the MC is constantly targeted by harassers esp for his baby like face and another plot point. The MC may come off as arrogant and narcissistic because of this but I didn't have a problem with that.

Our LI/ML is... more>> very mysterious. He arrives as a mystery and things surrounding him are shrouded in mystery. The MC tries to find out who he is and finds out the connection is much deeper than he realized.

I absolutely loved the plot twists. Some part of it I figured but some parts left me shocked and hooked. There was so much to be discovered even until the end of the story.

Obviously both our main characters are in love and their love is obsessive. I particularly enjoy that trope. The ML once in relationship with MC is quite possessive and protective so I really like him. He would do ANYTHING for MC and highly respective of MCs opinions and wishes. The MC is equally obsessive and is protective of the ML. The ML obv wins in terms of obsession, s*xual stamina and even protectiveness.

There is quite a bit of age gap between the characters. The ages and when the story takes place isn't clear but my guess is the age gap is somewhere between 10-12 years? Also the MC was a minor when they met but again, the circumstances of their meeting is revealed quite later in the story.

Trigger warning and spoiler but I think it is important for those that are uncomfortable with this kind of topic to know what is in store:
Spoiler

There is s*xual ab*se of a minor and child p*rn.

ML does not do anything (is not involved with the above warnings) to MC when they met when the MC was a minor but there is a kiss involved and everything was initiated by the MC. The MC is the one that was obsessed with the ML and kept pushing ML to sleep with him while the ML would gently turn him down. However, their chemistry then is very ambiguous while the MC is still a minor so some may find it uncomfortable.

It is NOT predatory on MLs end. The nature of what the ML feels for MC is, again, ambiguous. The ML looked at the MC as a kid, out of curiosity and indulged MC.

At one point though, the ML when dissuading the MC did say that if the MC still loves him and wants to sleep with him after they turn 18 then they can do it. MLs intention was to stop the MC and hoped they would grow out it. ML was planning on leaving for work and only returning after 10 years so he believed that would be long enough for MC to get over him.

MCs past can absolutely come off as child g*ooming (based on what ML tells MC above) /pe*ophilia (other characters) but I will leave that to the reader to determine how they feel about it when they read the story. It made me a bit uncomfortable too but the ML is very nice and extremely protective of the MC to a fault.

I really enjoyed the plot. The mystery surrounding the MCs past and what happened was truly heartbreaking but the story was worth it despite all the trigger warnings.

It is absolutely a must read. <<less

  • the relationship is good too
    Spoiler

But unfortunalety I didn't like the writing. I didn't feel the feeling the author seemed wanting to transmit and Idk, some part felt just too fast or lacking. Even the intimate scenes felt blank honestly. I wish we saw more of the MC's spirit as hacker and more of the ML's spirit as an agent.
