No reviews yet so here I am.

Our protagonist, Chen Lin transmigrates into a strange cultivation world. He's trapped in an outer part of a city along with its inhabitants. They're not normal themselves; people tend to suffer from odd abrupt mood swings where they change expressions and utter something arrogant and unfiltered. At night apparently only our protagonist can see red threads connected to cultivators leading up into something in the sky. Resources are scarce and knowledge seems like it has passed down many times with much being lost in... more>> transmission or faded with time. There's an overall mood of dread hanging over the city and nobody seems to want to be there but they're trapped. Pretty much everyone is at varying levels of the Qi Condensation Stage and cultivating farther is not easy.

Chen Lin's cheat is that he will succeed in something on the tenth try. It's not easy to ab*se though, he has to use "the correct method" for an attempt to count. If he's making a pill he needs to understand the formula, the refining process, have the materials, have a correct pill furnace and fire, and his cultivation level needs to be within a reasonable range. So he's started off rather humbly making talismans to slowly increase his wealth and skills, later picking up some alchemy.

The story appears close to a large plot development as of chapter 31 but it's moved along at a steady pace. He's had a few lucky breaks and good deals improve his knowledge, move things along and has become involved with some more powerful figures looking to escape the outer city. I'm interested to see where this goes. I'd say things have been a little shallow so far but I'm willing to give it more time, see if it keeps up the ominous mood.

Translation by GalaxyTL seems fine. The text is pretty clear to read and has generally avoided your common basic/lazy errors. <<less

1) What is about?

Is a slow story about failed cultivator middle-age (40-ish) guy, that gain a relative "weak-cheat" power that is pure auxiliar in production.

"he will succeed at least 1 in 10 tries, each time he tries to create something." However, only if he "follow all the correct steps, with correct materials, methods", so he need real recipe, have the materials/equipment necessary, and know at least how to follow the steps, then he need to fail 9 times and then in the 10th time it will succeed.

His talent for cultivation, from reaching the next lvl to mastering magic skills, are still bad to mediocre even 300 later. Making up his flaws with money and pills.

The MC himself, quick become capable of being ruthless and decisive when the situation calls for it, as well able to scheme against more powerful enemies as well when to bow his head and wait for a good time, as well prepare escape routes. However his cautious nature may be a little too much and the author struggle to keep it interesting without relying on hotheadedness of average cultivation MC. More of this point later. Also despise the fact is a "isekai" as usually it barely even come out and you might ignore it.

2) My overall thoughts about it

I must say that is one of the "most interesting" in the cultivation genre, and with a title like that, you know exactle what kind of MC you are getting, so my main complaing is not as valid on how that may be "too much caution" is not as valid. And if you are tired of hothead MCs that make dumb decision without think you may find this a breath of fresh air.

Regarding overall plot development and worldbuilding is pretty good. When it come to small arc plot has some interesting elements but feel rushed or the MC didn't take enough active role at it. While is not as bad as japanese isekai that the MC is often complete passive yes-man, there are more than one time where he will be just a piece to someone else plan and he is not interested in seeking much more in deep in other characters lore, that hurt specially in the realm of character and dialogue. Even if we hear about interesting plot and counter-plots, when we don't interact or get invested in the character or the fight is not as interesting as it could have been.

3) More detailed good and bad points

However, this cultivation world is more "realistic/grim" than others and terrible things happen to good people, man, woman and some times even the recently introduced jade beauty may endup terrible the next time he meet them. At same time fights are often quick and blood affairs, with little to no banter or conversation and given the weakness of the MC items are dangerous hidden cards that anyone may carry to kill even somone of superior cultivation realm. While you can expect that good numbers of battles have a "planning" involved, both in take the ramification of killing that person in consideration to leading then to 20 years in the making trap.

Also don't expect "sect/school arc" the MC is old man in both body and heart, he will wonder around and when he join any forces is clearly a more bussiness/employee relationship. So at least until now, no tournament, test or explored inheretance.

Instead is on the very first arc that we learn that this world is not your "generic" cultivation world, the world is clearly "poor/weak" compared to what you expect and you will learn why, also there are "Weirdness" and situations that often escape the confines of the magic of the cultivators and can cause all kinds of strange things. As well a relative novel "cultivation method" that one of the main villains use. Lastly there is a thought put in make the world and character "living" outside the MC influency, when major events happens far away that affect the MC or character that he meet again clearly had UPs and Downs in their life.

Like most cultivation novels, characters and dialogue is rather mediocre. In part because there are no secundary characters, all others characters feel like they are temporary side characters the author barely show him interacting with them. Even when it come to Romance, you really can't buy it because all their buildup intimacy are implied to have happened in time skips, while dialogue that you do see is mostly utilitarian to advance the next scene or exposition. The author wouldn't show more than 1 scene where they crack jokes and say how they are friends for so many years or how theses words are clearly fake and they are probing each other for weakness while talking or something. That get worse because the MC reluctance to take risk make him even more unlike to seek others and their interaction are relative short before the MC feels danger and escape to new place and no real plot involve that character is ever satisfied followed, at best we hear later how they endup.

In fact:

Spoiler

after end of a small arc, timeskip tells us that the MC has made friendship with 2 others cultivators while travelig and beside 1 chapter talking about then and how they become friends that the MC himself had confirmed in his monologue, the very next chapter we have another time skip telling how both endup dying a few years ago.

[collapse]

Beside the characters, the biggest critique is how the MC take the "cautiou" too far and get you annoyed and slight bored, if the world wasn't always changing and pushing him or him believing he is being at risk and retreat to a new area, we are sure that would be story of the most boring man alive. Following the "slow and steady" aproach, the MC can always use his cheat to fund his training in safety without going to "seek oportunity". That get to the point that even characters inside the story point out that his excessive caution is his biggest flaw. Worse yet, you can't really fault some of his aproach, his decision are rational and recklessness and greedy often get punished by swift demise while the MC 3 hidden cards and trying to run away when possible is keeping him alive.

Another problem is the "luck" aspect, that is pushing a little "too much". Specially when it come to romance. The MC is so Rizzless and without intention of pursuing some lady, that the author had to make complete inexplicable make situations that either he is in the right time and right place to gain trust of powerful and beautiful woman, that even the MC himself can't understand why they have fallen for him. That get worse when he meet the
Spoiler

Nightmare that will provide with so much oportunity for him

[collapse]
.

Another thing that annoyed me:

Spoiler

Lastly it does have the dreaded aphrodisiac drug/poison trope, but is played just a way for the MC and the other party had le*d thoughts but he manege to resist the temptation with his extra cautions and clean then up and then even when they throw themself at his arms he just say no and leaves.

Looking for a romance where the protagonist is in control, makes several plans, and isn't a weakling?

If the answer is yes, don't read this novel.

If I were to describe the protagonist, I would say he is a tennis ball. Always being thrown from one side to the other, without being able to do anything.

... more>> The world seems to hate him, and he seems to be the harbinger of destruction, wherever he goes tragedy follows.

Some examples: He manages to escape from a city where death is certain, so he flees and goes to another country. The place he goes to is being attacked by demons, and all the people there are going to die, so he has to flee again. Then he runs to another place, and you think, 'Now that he's in a new place, the author won’t do the same thing, right?' But the author surprises you—he doesn't destroy the place he's in, because the author doesn't need to. The protagonist finds out that the world he's in will be destroyed in a few years, and he has to look for ANOTHER WORLD TO LIVE IN.

With the end of the world, separated from your family. Spend years searching for your wife, manage to find her, and guess what, she’s in one of the WORST places to live, and at risk of death. Go save her, you won’t die, but you will lose EVERYTHING in the process, treasures and cultivation. Try to return home, and on the way, some people want to kill your wife because she has a rare bloodline. Discover that they want to kill her because suddenly a treasure involving rare bloodlines has appeared, and that’s why they want your wife.

When you return home, the powerful ones plan to do something big. The strongest of them is attacked by an unknown force, and after the fight ends, the unknown force makes one last attack before leaving. Even though you're on another continent, it comes for you, and you have no way to escape. You wake up in a strange and unknown place, go out to explore, and on your first encounter, you almost die from a lumberjack.

That's it throughout the entire book, his bad luck is always absurd, nothing goes right for him without problems.

Some things are interesting like the protagonist's ability, the world of nightmares, but you have to have a lot of willpower to continue reading this, and not get stressed out by everything bad that happens to the protagonist. <<less

Go and read the work 10/10.

But there are some points that I want to complain about.

The main feature of this work is not the plot, the world or cultivation, but the main character. Namely, his caution. For example, some event happens, the main character finds out about it and you think, well, he’s going to go there now, but no! The main character weighs everything, says the phrase “life is more precious” and goes in the opposite direction. And then after 50 chapters you find out that everyone who went... more>> there died. All these works about unkillable heroes have spoiled us. The world of cultivation is dangerous, people are evil and insidious and are literally ready to stab you in the back at any second. And most importantly, cruelty does not come out of thin air, it has a reason. Over time, this feeling subsides, but at the beginning of the book you directly feel the hopelessness of people and the situation in which they found themselves. Snow town, lack of resources, unclear danger and rather smart characters make the main character literally overcome himself in order to survive and find unconventional solutions to complex problems. And his golden finger, although useful, can become a disaster for him at any moment. Unfortunately, this feeling is lost later. Yes, the main character is still cautious, but the intensity gradually subsides.

By the way, about women. The first 300 chapters there were almost none of them or they were somewhere in the background. The main character went his own way and only occasionally indulged in dreams about a wedding... right after going to a brothel. So by chapter 300, two concubines were shoved into him and the main character began to have feelings for them. The question is why? How can a super cautious main character who is ready to run away to another continent at any second be combined with a love relationship. The correct answer is: no way. Yes, the author tried, but he did not succeed at all, it turned out terribly ridiculous and unrealistic. This aspect really annoys me, but the only reason I continue reading is because of the well-written main character. <<less

What a disappointment.

The first few arcs are legit great, the MC is cautious, allies and enemies actually have brains. The side characters do some solid scheming so even though the MC is careful he still gets caught up in plans and screwed over, plus there's a real sense of danger and tension.

But all of that disappears the more you read. The characters get dumber, the plot loses complexity and instead of clever scheming it leans on forced drama to create tension. Getting boring very quickly, and it eventually devolves into... more>> your typical xianxia junkfood.

Up to where I stopped, I still liked the first few arcs and the nightmare world ones but everything else is meh to awful. First few hundred chapters are a 4*, but now it's a 2* after almost 700 chapters. <<less

The main character is a slightly bolder version of the character from Top Tier Providence. He doesn't go around picking fights, frequently hides his identity, emotional but also detached, and doesn't typically risk his life seeking riches. His "cheat" ability starts off as being able to succeed in creating products with a 1 in 10 rate. The ability has the ability to upgrade as time goes on. He starts off with talismans and pills, but later in the story, he even uses it for creating food and drink.

The plot structure... more>> reminds me of Martial Peak. The MC upgrades his cultivation a few tiers, goes up to the next world, adds a few romantic partners, gets lost, and then has to do it all over again. Unlike Martial Peak, there's a stronger sense of helplessness when confronting stronger enemies and natural disasters. Throughout the story, there's a strong sense of the MC's destiny being guided by various parties for unknown reasons and he's constantly getting tangled in things beyond his vision.

I like that there are a lot of recurring characters. Everyone is living their own life and they will pop in and out of MC's life as he adventures or holes up in a spot. Sometimes it's an enemy, sometimes it's a friend. <<less
