This is a red flag ridden, spicy novel. Reminds me of Painter of the Night, Jinx and other korean bl manhwa: the romance dynamic is an unstable toxic tr*shy ML and pushover MC. However I eat up toxic love stories so it's fine with me LOL

The dirty talk is wild lmao it had me putting my phone down to contemplate life. The author is definitely aware of how absurd it is and is unashamed of it. Lots of comedic undertone to lighten up the toxicity throughout the novel.

The plot and... more>> setting really surprised me, super interesting and unique. Typically dystopian settings in a lot of bl novels feel flimsy to me, it's more of a flavor text. But here it feels immersive and well thought out: dystopian flooded earth, pirate gangs, secret clans capable of floating entire continents. It's a violent and brutal world, so I can understand why the ML is unstable. <<less

Heya, this is the translator here~ To preface, this novel would probably be a bit polarizing to NU readers here who have certain preferences (though funnily enough it's mostly liked by Korean readers), so take this review as sort of a caution so that the book finds the right audience. After all, I wouldn't want to make anyone read something that they don't like.

To summarize the plot simply, a quaint island city lies in the fantastical setting in which our protagonists live. Our MC has supernatural powers unbeknownst to others... more>> and needs to eat a certain flower to survive. While looking for the flowers, he rans into ML, a pirate and overlord of the town, who is in search of MC's kind of people. MC manages to lie out of his initial situation but ML's suspicions are unrelenting.

As I've warned in the first chapter, the ML is a jerk. He's ruthless and violent, though I would argue looking at it in the perspective of the setting, it would make sense as he is a pirate. In any case, he does unfortunately hurt MC, who tries to stand his ground but still understandably afraid of him. Meanwhile, MC is the pure-hearted and kind type. Although he is not the textbook "strong" character and is scared of ML, he's rather positive despite his hardships and does sufficiently well for himself, and always speaks up to ML. And for the record, he actually can be very strong through his superpowers, just that he doesn't really use them!

So why am I giving it a 5 star? Well, I am really enjoying the story so far, the fresh and unique setting and premise is quite different from other novels and appealing to my tastes, so I'm excited to see where this is going. Also, come on, who can say no to that cover by God Jinsa-nim? And while I love sweet romances with kind and perfect and doting love interests as much as the next person, I'm also a believer of second chances and character development. While the ML is an a**hole, I would not say he isn't redeemable. So far, he's the type that treats others as he likes and then afterwards be like 'wait why do I feel so nasty?' There's something fun (ny) about watching an idiot being enlightened of his idiotic ways, regretting and being down bad. We haven't gotten to that point yet but fingers crossed.

The novel is still very new, so I can't comment much at this point, but I'm looking forward to both the plot and character development!

Update/edit: So far, there's no regret per se but I definitely see a subtle change in ML, and it's apparent he likes MC and is sweet to him in his own way. It might be hard to imagine them together in the beginning but the more I read, the more I think they suit each other well. <<less

I've been reading the raws on Ridibooks and I am excited for the chapters to catch up as I've been simultaneously reading the tl and the raws to catch any details I might miss in the raws. It'll be helpful to read the translator's (xuexxi) review & the synonpsis first to get a good idea of the storyline and characters as I'll mostly focus on what I like about the novel.

The setting is super interesting: a mostly submerged world where continents remain afloat due to the powers of a (mythical?... more>> :P) people called the Hwa clan, who have the powers to control vegetation. The world building is nicely paced, and you are kind of fed details in every chapter to piece together a good idea of where this story is taking place.

The gong (Tae Muwon AHHH) is a bit of an a**hole, like the translator said. But he's never truly ruthless with the su (Cheongyeon AHHHH) and in fact their interactions are very fun to read because of how multifaceted both of their characters and personalities are. Cheongyeon is very rooted (pun intended) as a character, has a clear goal in his mind, and is the teeniest bit cunning and rebels against Muwon in his own cute way. Muwon is just some dude who really really likes flowers (wink wink read chapter 82) and the second-in-command of the pirate ship that has laid claim to Cheonghwa Town, where Cheongyeon lives. It's slowly revealed to us the extent that their lives intertwine (it's almost like it's MEANT TO BE).

Spoiler

psst they've met before as kids! XD <333333 very very briefly, and who knows if they remember each other :shruggers:

[collapse]

Anyways, the thing I really like about this story is that I honestly can't tell which direction it's going to take -- the plot unfolds in a way that keeps you guessing and 4 chapters/week is nowhere near enough to scratch the itch.

The side characters are charming and very endearing. This novel has its fair share of comedic moments amidst the ass-clenching suspense/build up, and all the characters are really well fleshed out (my favorites are the Planets, they all have such personality) and come alive to make this story very vivid. In my opinion, although this is a fantasy-ish setting, it's very well thought-out, doesn't feel contrived, and very immersive.

The plot and romance are well-balanced, not too much of a slow burn. The plot doesn't lag when the romance isn't quickly developing and vice versa. But when the romance does develop it WILL give you palpitations.

keywords: sexy mf pirate, beautiful gentle apothecary, whales, lobsters, 20, 000 hwan, lotus flower tea :3, albinism, etc.

I hope more people start reading this so that we can all sh*t on Muwon and cheer Cheongyeon on together (camping in CG's comment section is a full time job).

MC is being humiliated again and again. It's really frustrating. He kind of cares but ignores it when it's too much.

I knew the ML was an a-hole from the translator's warning. But this is more depressing than I expected. Especially mc's attitude. You can feel all the pent up trauma and I have no hope of it ever getting resolved. Only the ML acting like prince charming solving his problems, conveniently ignoring that he was the source of those problems.

It's also disappointing that we have yet another violent ML in... more>> a Korean bl. Like he can't be sexy if he's not a killer.

Dropping. I'd prefer Saturn as ml. <<less

Both main characters are not very likeable in my opinion. I was expecting more since it is written by a popular author, but I still can't get myself to like them, especially ML.

Dropped for now, but I might still pick it up later or/and change my rating since the story's setting is spectacular and extremely unique—an apocalyptic world with pirates and sinking continents and a hidden tribe with the ability to keep them afloat? That's f*cking fresh.

It's just a pity the ML is like that. :/

Story with an interesting MC, a rather unique premise and nice worlbuilding completely ruined by the terrible and repeated noncon upon which is built the MC and ML's relationship. For me the ML is unreeedemable and I am skipping all the NC scenes and only sticking around because the Hwa people plot keeps me interested.

This story is definitely not for everyone but I think it’s very good. The ML is a total a-hole but he’s very well written so it works. I wish MC was less of a push-over but it’s part of his character and I feel like as the story progresses he gets a bit better. A major part of the story is how both the MC and ML had crappy lives but ended up on opposite ends when it comes to coping. Overall I think it’s definitely worth the read.

The setting and world building for this novel is one of the most unique and interesting I've read in long time. The world has flooded and to escape the rising waters, certain continents are being held up by giant plants. The legend goes that those who control these plants are the Hwa clan, who have mystic powers. But most believe they are just legends even after the 11th continent sunk....

I personally like the dynamic between the MC and ML but the consent is a little dubious at the start of... more>> their relationship. But they are both very strong characters that with a lot of personality. Maybe I'm just weak to pirates... <<less
