Cuttlefish is back with the much anticipated sequel of his beloved work Lord of Mysteries.

There's really not much to review as there's too little chapters as of right now but the author has improved his general writing quality, less info dumps, and much faster on it's pacing.

What makes this series work in general and cut above the rest is that it incorporates better prose, planning, and description than most CN fiction. First of all, I just want to say that for those who haven't read the prequel, read the prequel first. Why ? Because all the end game knowledge will be revealed in Early chapters. What makes LOTM so amazing is we get to explore the lore, the mysteries, and the world's building through Klein's lenses and it's done so amazingly. The first book makes reader to deduct and think, and discuss on comment section about the lore and mysteries. And I swear you don't want to be spoiled about the... more>> truth of the world revealed by a monocle guy, a character everyone loves, when Klein and monocle guy were eloping. Reading LOTM 2 before reading the prequel will make those mysteries and reveals less impactful.

I have to warn you that my preview is heavily influenced by my taste, preference, and bias.

As some people have said, the pace of this novel is a lot faster than the previous book since all the world building has already been done, so you can't really use the old "this novel has so much filler" to give low rating to this novel. This book gets Darker much faster than the previous one, I'm not complaining btw, and I really like this. As always, cuttlefish is so good at making suspense, combined with the darker tone, I can just feel the horror.

The side characters are bland, really. They have nothing to make me adore them like what side characters did in the first book. Besides Jenna, Charlie and obviously Amon, the rest of side characters are so bland, it feels like they have no personality at all. And I think this happens because the pace of this novel is much faster than the first book. In the first book, cuttlefish spent tons of chapters to flesh out side characters, the first book have many chapters from side characters POV. But in this novel, not so much. It's unfortunate that cuttlefish makes the pace faster because apparently many people complained that those slow pace are just fillers and now he makes the pace faster at the cost of fleshing out side characters.

guess what, after Jenna starts following franca to do mission together, she becomes boring too! She turns from a hot minx with foul mouth into someone who is so gullible who doesn't talk much. I get that she's new to the beyonders world and it makes sense that she acts that way. But the current Jenna feels so boring, I miss the old Jenna. She was the best girl...

Honestly, Amon singlehandedly carries this novel. Every chapters he is in are blast! Charlie too, he is funny.

And I don't like the french words that translator keeps, it's just confusing. It's pretty tiresome to open Google translate everytime french words appear and I'm too lazy to read old chapters to know what those french words mean. Even now I don't know what "my cabbage" means.

So far I love this novel, thus I'll give it 5 stars. My rating will probably change in the future. I strongly recommend you to read this novel, especially if you are into story about cults, mysticism, secret organization, and Lovecraft horror. <<less

Let me start by saying this first. My expectations and excitement for this second book were very low. It's not because I disliked Book 1, quite the opposite. I loved book 1 so much (it's my all-time top 3), and I read the author's note long ago saying that Klein wouldn't be in this book.

But still, once it came out, I gave this a read. If you are like me, who still can't get over book 1, then this might take some time for you to enjoy. Reading the same... more>> city names and people and not reading about Klein's lampooning is difficult.

However, stick until 107 chapters; just clench your teeth and read till there, and then you will have this one "WOW" moment that will just blow away the boredom or disinterest you felt until then. The arc ends with surprises and explanations for all that happened in the first 100 chapters, giving you the immersed satisfaction of knowing that the author still has not lost his grip on the story amidst LOTs immense popularity.

Each arc ends on a high, just like in Book 1, not at the same intensity but still at a high. Take your time with the book since it keeps throwing very important hints on what has happened since Klein's slumber and what might happen in the future.

They are cameos of the characters from book 1, and it's so funny to see how they act all mighty and godly now.

Much inferior to the first book/not recommended reading.

Before starting to read, I was very apprehensive about having to follow a protagonist who was not familiar with mysticism and sequences, repetitive powers that we already saw in book 1, conflicts about family life/beyond (like Klein) and above all: Time loop. Fortunately, all of this was resolved in a convincing and adequate way in the first volume. The second and third arcs were good, both with memorable final antagonists.

In this book, we are presented with new Beyonder sequences representing the outer gods.... more>> Problems: Users of these evil blessings do not need to make an effort (method of actuation) and much less understand mysticism to advance in the sequences, in addition, the advances are much faster compared to orthodox paths. All these new paths that I witnessed have strong capabilities of hiding or surviving like c*ckroaches, as if they had been designed precisely for the situation of infiltration on Earth. Script convenience. In addition, they are unbalancedly STRONG. I had to read a demigod from sequence four effectively affecting another demigod who was on another CONTINENT, all this without even having this demigod as the primary target of the ability. Bizarre.

If plot armor was already strong with Klein, here things are multiplied. The protagonist is literally a walking anti-fortune-telling and anti-prophecy, he accumulates powers from multiple different gods in his "special body", is saved at the last minute, and wins even when he loses. It's like a generic Chinese cultivation.

The protagonist's path beyonder is boring. I believe that in 800 chapters he only looked for recipes and ingredients to advance 3 times. The guy simply receives everything he needs from other people.

From arc 4 onwards, developments become unintelligible. Things simply happen without any clue, the protagonist doesn't understand, the reader doesn't understand and it is always necessary for a more powerful character to appear to the protagonist at the end of the arc to explain in an expository way what the author was unable to insert naturally in the writing. I swear it happens every time. <<less

Summary so you dont need to read too long: CoI is mid. Story telling is kinda bad and many characters are just there for the sake of MC, Lumian, without truly being "alive" in the story. Plot is also repetitive, no tension at all.

The plot is good, but the excecution is sloppy, making it infuriating to read. At some point, Cuttlefish gave up to give reasonable explanation to the ongoing plot and using Adam to make a reasonable development for all plots, which later exposed that his action is also a reasonable development prepared by an entity.

Meh, not even fun when plot got revealed when it's all reasonable development, fate, or convergence stuff.

The MC, Lumian is also unnecessarily involved in all matters that is beyond him. I know he is MC, but finding him in every matters is making me tired of him despite my initial liking for him.

After volume 5, I stop emphatize with him because all of his choices are beyond my comprehension. His character is not definite and he often abruptly changes his moral value. Maybe that's a unique selling point for some, but not for me, unfortunately.

I also dont like his unhealthy obsession with his adoptive older sister. Like bro, let your sister rest in peace instead of merging your soul with her and cause her eternal agony. His obsession is cringe and very selfish. Tho, Lumian as an MC is decent before volume 6. After that... hhh

Characters: characters are there just for MC, everything resolves around MC, making it very one dimensional and pretty unlikeable. Im not attached to any new characters from book 2 aside from that 2 side characters that are just discarded after the plot ends.

This novel is amazing just finished volume one and omg the plot twist was totally unexpected, What a awesome novel. I didnt expect anything less from this author man, Totally deserves the hype, And I feel like he is getting even better at what he does. Lotm has the potential to be iconic fantasy series like lord of rings or Harry potter. Please read on following order otherwise there will be grave consequences. Lord of The Mysteries (Lotm 1)

Circle of inevitability, a sequel of LOTM has already starts to show that is not to be outdone by LOTM and has steadily been gaining better throughout the chapters.

Just like with LOTM the worldbuilding, characters, antagonists and plot all seem to be done meticulously, no need to be worried about it being done poorly or lacking and only expecting another great hit from the Author Cuttlefish That loves diving.

An early review, the first arc is not even finished and I think it's going to take at least 30 chapters before it's done, i'll edit this review once it's done.

Please also keep in mind that this is a sequel, while I think it's possible to get around with just reading this book since the MC is not the same person, early in the story we already have foreshadowing and characters that you can only get if you read the prequel and there is no doubt that's going to be... more>> a constant through out the novel.

Alright, so far despite my high expectations i've been impressed, the author has not lost his touch and might even be even greater, he already proved that the prequel was not a one hit wonder but rather the work of a talented and professional author. Unlike the prequel, we are directly getting into very high level supernatural stuff and the MC is progressing rapidly due to having knowledge that should be very hard to come by, I was pleasantly suprised by the pace, but it is a sequel so the lion share of world building was already done in the prequel allowing to move along with the plot.

The characters already proved to be interessing, the sister identity is already obvious for the reader of the prequel and is the link to an organization that will certainly provides a great sub plot. And she herself seems to be an interessing one, an introvert, a bit crazy, kind and smart and she follows a pathway (the kind of supernatural power she will get as she progresses) that will allows her to knows A LOT of things about the supernatural providing a lot of great contents.

The MC is also shaping to be great, he is an extrovert and socially very skilled and choosed a pathway that promise an even more extravagant personnality! He also have two mysteries about him that are very exciting : His past that he doesn't remember and the dream that is likely to be connected to the MC of the prequel.

Those two are really shaping to be a great duo, in personnality the MC is the one doing the field work for an investigation (due to being socially skilled), the sister is the one providing a fresh view point and connecting the dots that her brother provides due to her studious nature, we basically have the book smart (sister) and the street smart (brother). Even in the supernatural they are a great duo, the sister is more skilled in mysticism due to her pathway being one of the best for it, but she is rather weak in a fight, while her brother (the MC) is the opposite, he kinda sucks in mysticism but will be very deadly in a fight. There is a really great synergy between the two and I really hope that the sister will move alongside the MC through out the story.

The author is also releasing two chapters a day and don't get it wrong, it's HIGH QUALITY chapters, not the kind of chapters with 50% of useless garbage for words count that xianxia authors loves. Massive props to the translator that is doing a STELLAR job by providing a high quality and fast translation. <<less

Not as good as the first book

COI features a new protagonist, a male in his late teen, brother to one of the transmigrators released at the end of the first book. This is its greatest strength and also its greatest flaw.

... more>> Having a new protagonist, starting a new adventure, allows the story to exist, while at the same time utilizing the old casts and settings already thought out and popular with the readers, easily earning polarity and delivering enjoyment.

However, it also presents a new challenge as the readers, already acclimated to the previous protagonist and his way of thinking and doing things, will have to again adapt to the new protagonist. The readers have already witnessed the development of the previous protagonist. This is not a problem in itself, but the previous protagonist is not a child, and the new one is. Previously it was an un-young transmigrator adapting to the new world, surviving, living, becoming god and what comes with that. That presents a certain worldview/ theme/ pallete to the story the readers have navigated through. The current protagonist being a young-ish, almost adult, non-adult, demands a different starting point. The problem is we are at half of the story and yet I still do not see development past the pallete of a young man. SPOILER WARNING (but it's in the tags) the main theme so far has been lost, recovering from lost, revenge, and that's about it. What's sorely missing is the coming of age, the child to young adult, the 17 stages of the Hero's journey or whatever those things are.

Just like in the previous book, most volumes end in a revelation, a lesson, a return and also a departure, but even after how many volumes we still have not progressed passed revenge. Yes, the plot centers around this, and it can only be resolved at the very end of the story, but that is precisely why it's wrong. While the main plot can center around that, the narrative mustn't.

Some reasons... One being bad storytelling (how long can you drag "revenge" out without adding revelations and conundrums to make it worthwhile?) and two being the constraints or situation surrounding the current story which is that the readers were previously following an adult, and now they are following a child. A child is worth following but only if the child grows. Again, I don't see growth of a child. I only see a child with issues that gets resolved, somewhat, which flares up again at times, mildly, without actually growing. There were parts where perhaps a harsh lesson should have been given (learning about being wrong, simply, at times and not immediately going, well I tried my best, did you? could it be better while also not blaming yourself?) but it wasn't. There were parts where more guidance could be given to the child (I'm saying child loosely, as someone not fully grown), not understanding all the implications, only some, while having the adult giving their interpretations while leaving the child with more to think on their own, which could then be resolved later in the narrative, and so on.

To summarize my points up to the last paragraph... the second book is a R15 shounen adventure, set in the universe of a great book, which had totally another tone. The second book, narratively speaking, put after the first book, is a terrible placement. That is my opinion.

With that in mind, do I recommend reading this book? Yes, after the 1st book. If you enjoyed the first book, this just gives you more enjoyable content to read. More of the settings, more of the casts, more of the world, and more of the mysteries not totally uncovered.

    • The first book features zero LGBT+ representation, aside from the transing happening (but everyone's biologically their gender here lol, only bio girls and bio boys) but also zero h*mophobia/etc. The second book features a couple negative Lesbian and Gay and Bi representations, with the only positive lesbian (?) representation (not sure what to call the relationship, it's so straight in my eyes) is SPOILER ALERT with the main cast (a physical relationship only though). (So far.) I'm not sure if this is a good or a bad thing but do be on the lookout. I would hate it if I found out I only found gay people linked to depravity and sin and evil gods in the book.
    • I think the second book contains way more things explicit in nature. Again, not sure good or bad.

tl;dr It's a good story to derive enjoyment from, reading with your fellow readers, after enjoying the first book, looking after your adult children. The main theme or narrative positioning is definitely not in the best place possible though.

P.S.

I'm thinking this might be what the Marvel universe or Harry Potter feels like or something, as someone who never read any of those, only watched some. Might not be perfect but it is fun.

If there was a single diversity couple, one positive representation of actually gay people (idk, maybe just make one of the previous cast gay or a side character or something) the LGBT+ concern would have been a non-issue.

After some period of thinking... I think my comment about the theme/palette being wrong is because the story is missing a character with the role of a parent. Lumian does not parent himself. His adoptive sister, Aurora, was his actual parent, not a sibling, and without her there was no one left. The previous cast--the Tarot club--adults do not take on parenting him, and his sister's acquaintance also did not act as a parent. The protagonist of the previous story, Klein, did not need a parent because he was parenting himself, already grown up. Although there is no "tackling" of psychological issues as fast as in this current book, it actually is better handled, in my opinion.

Although it would affect the plot whichever way the author goes with and that he probably knows more than me writing this review... I think turning any one of the mentioned people into the parent would help the story a lot. Lumian himself. Aurora, perhaps in some magical way. The sister's acquaintance and his friend, perhaps needing to be a bit more adult-like. Or the Tarot club members, taking in a little more responsibility. But that's just my take as one reader. <<less

Circle of Inevitability is the sequel to Lord of The Mysteries, with improved pacing, excellent world-building, and suspenseful moments. The people who were off-put by the start of the previous novel due to its pacing will be pleasantly surprised by how well done Volume 1 is. As mentioned by others, there are lots of callbacks to previous events that expand upon what we already know, changing the way we see the world and making each chapter a refreshing read.

I really really wanna like this one because LoTM is one of my favorite novels on here of all time. But there are just so many changes made compared to LoTM that just clashes for me to put it on the same lvl.

First off there are multiple good points to this story, it still has depth, stoy development, characters and their development as well and you can really notice that this story is written with the expectations that you've already read LoTM which is both a good and a bad... more>> thing, good for old readers not so good for new readers.

However, what really made me like LoTM was the fact that the MC wasn't an all powerful being that had some fairly clear strengths and weaknesses. There also wasn't much of an obvious take where the MC is at lvl 1 so he only faces lvl 1 enemies and then when he becomes lvl 2 he fights lvl 2 and so on, instead all powerful beings would just pop out or even control the MC in the dark. The MC didn't always win or win big for that matter he could also lose but he always managed to survive.

This time around the author has for some reason decided to give the MC a ton of powers and given him next to no apperent weakness while the previous MC had clear strengths and weaknesses. There are also some new settings that just seemingly makes it so that he previous MC should have been x10-100 times more powerful but for some reason he wasn't.

For instance in LoTM the MC had as mentioned very clear strenghts and weaknesses he was also in control of a sefirot that in the last book mostly seemed to enhance his abilities to some degree and allowed him to come back from death after a few days but overall he was weak in frontal battles and instead had to focus around preparing for his battles and learning his enemies weaknesses. The new MC on the other hand has a sequence that is tailored for battle but weak in the spiritual field and the mystical so he from he get go get's a second sequence that is super strong in the spiritual field and the mystical but weak in up front battles making the MC strong in every field with no weakness whatsoever also because he has a angel inside of him he also has a similar power to the last MC where he will restore himself to how he was when he just got this power no matter how damaged he is at 6 am each day so he is close to immortal unless outright killed before 6 am, which the MC will often exploit.

We also learn that a big reason for the MC and others being able to hold two or even more sequences at the same time is because sefirots can grant sequences they hold sway even cross sequence which was explained as almost impossible before unless you wanted to go crazy and/or turn into a monster. So in short the MC from the previous work should have been able to both hold and use three sequences at the same time while also granting them to his followers but never did.

Hopefully this part will be explained more in depth eventually, since the explanation so far is that the 7 sealed sefirots in the western continent are granting sequences like this to "daoists" basically people who wrongly believe that seifrots are the dao and worship them which in turn grant them powers but in fact the sefirots are only seemingly fattening them up eventually consuming the worshipers once they reach a certain stage of power according to the author and the third book is going to be based of the western continent.

This is still a banger and I hope that things will work out eventually but overall these are minor things that I dislike with the story.

So with this now completed it's sad to say that the author was seemingly unhappy with writing this sequal, it came to such a point that the story was seemingly rushed by the end so that the author could fit in an ending and not have to write the third part in the planned trilogy and instead ending it here.

The points I tried to bring up with my review was that I thought the new MC was too OP and things was going way to fast especially with the progression of enemies. The author also mention this as a point that he felt forced to do this because he needed to keep the readers feeling excited which forced him to do this which led to the MC in this book being up against the outer gods just a 1/3 into the novel when it only really happened in the ending in LoTM. There was other parts which the author also felt forced into but just overall it feels like the author didn't enjoy writing CoI and much was seemingly out of their control which I also think shows in how it was delivered.

Overall it feels sad to hear that the world of LoTM was cut short and the author was unable to write the story they wanted to deliver.

the reason this is and 4 and not a 5 is a combination of the French words and British slang I didn't know which made for a lot of pauses to look things up at first, resulting is a great deal of frustration.

Despite completely changing the protagonist and start off with very slow pace

It's still got that unique intreguing allure that keep me reading until more are more mysteries are being slowly unraveled and with a BANG! It instantly got me hooked again just like the prequel

The theme that focusing more on the inside work of various secret organization and the way that MC having some close friends who working closely with him made thing really refreshing

Ps. One obvious downside for me is that I can't remember or tell apart any names that using france, my brain just won't register them no matter what. A continuation that so far has shown itself worthy of its predecessor, so far Mr. Cuttlefish has not left me wanting at any time in terms of keeping me in the story and wanting to know what is happening in the world of the novel.

Just one word, phenomenal.

The author is really good at writing series. He builds on the mysteries from book one, almost flawlessly.

Coming onto the MC, he's unlike Klein. Lumian is younger and rough around thr edges. Klein is still my favourite, as I'm as old as him and I could relate to him.

Honestly there isn't much to say. Just read it. The writing is a lot better, story is as good as it was in book 1. And end of the volumes while indeed end on a high note but they barely match the energy from book 1... until 875 happened. I don't know if this is the end of a volume but something very, very big is going down. It's bypassed the level of book 1 for me.

Lastly, it's an amazing read. Author fixes all his mistakes from the other book. Look at lumian as a separate MC and trust me, you'll love this! <<less

Good sequel, that builds on the mysterie and expands it. Although some information may be redundant if you read the first book. My main gripe is the abilites of the Lumian which are simmilar to Klein's. The way they fight is really simmilar even though they have different sequnces.

Frankly, I don't understand those who dislike Lumian, since I find his personality way of thinking quite interesting...

Furthermore unlike Klein he doesn't hesitate as much before doing something, which makes reading more exciting.

Last but not least, I love the dual pathway we get to see and his interactions with the "transmigrators".

Really good novel. The prequel is good and this is even better. Alot more team work with multiple different pathways working together make the story much more colorful than the prequel. Klein is great but I feel like he have to do almost everything by himself while Lumian always has good teamates to rely on.
