Luisen was a lord who wasted his life away after fleeing his castle in the middle of the night during a war. He died experiencing bitter regret, but when he opened his eyes, he found he had regressed back to that night he ran away!

There’s no fleeing twice! This time he’s determined not to leave the territory, but to protect it…

Going alone to the enemy to surrender himself, Luisen met Carlton, a noble-hating mad-dog mercenary. The two found strange solidarity as unfortunate souls who threw away their life’s potential through horrible choices.

“If I die, so will you,” Luisen said.

Carlton, who acknowledged the reality of Luisen’s statement, suddenly began to think, “Why is the duke helping me so much?”

From then on, his gaze began to linger on Luisen.

I finished the book by paying the price. You can understand that I like the story very much, the parts I wrote below are just my subjective thoughts.

Spoiler

In my opinion, it would have been a legend without these shortcomings. Also, the romantic dose wasn't enough for me. It is not clear whether it is love for each other, admiration or an obligation. Do they just need each other? I don't think there is much in the story of s*xual tension. Another deficiency is mc's psychological deficiency, he does not show much trauma according to his experience, the only trauma symptom is his eating habit. The links in your old life seemed to me to be broken. The fact that he even sells his body for food in the story, in my opinion, disrupts the psychological course of the story. The reason is that MC is someone who has been in a high position in the story for generations and he was raised this way. The last thing he can do for food is sell his body. In fact, I don't think this incident fits the story perfectly. The presence of a plant that grows everywhere would not have dragged it to this point. Also, a person who has experienced something like this would not be successful at the second chance, as it would cause severe trauma. They are usually those who sell their bodies, narcotic products, wealth, low social life, pleasure life. If MC had been so dishonorable, he wouldn't have cared for anyone the second chance. But he cares about everyone in the story. I think it would be enough for a master like him to collect garbage instead. Even if this event was narrated for the first time, we could see the psychological break. At the same time, it should have been shown from the beginning that MC is not s*upid but indifferent in my opinion. It can be said that while depicting the story, MC did nothing because instead of being s*upid, everyone was making things easier for him. If he had been s*upid anyway, he wouldn't have been able to handle the second part of his life successfully. The betrayal of the usak with its ups and downs and the psychological pressure of this betrayal on MC should have been created. The psychological background of ml's actions could have been given more.

The reason why I wrote so much, the story is very good, I just pointed out the small deficiencies to make it more perfect. It is nice even if these deficiencies are not completed. <<less

The writing and translation are great, and characterisation speaks for itself. We see Luisen go from s*um of the earth to something resembling repentance, and Carlton coming along for the journey is icing on top.

Some of the tropes are cliche - as mentioned by other reviewers - but the author executes them well.
Spoiler

Carlton might be bloodthirsty, but his "mercy" is organic and well-justified. His actions stem from self-preservation and, later, reluctant curiosity as Luisen seeks to better the lives of his countryfolk. Luisen seeks out a mysterious saint that bore him mercy in his final days, but we know nothing of their identity. Nothing in this story is ever easy, and it pays dividends when we get to watch these characters mature in the face of struggle.

This is a bit cliche, but I really like it. It's still early on in the plot, so I don't really know what's gonna happen. The interactions between the MC and the ML are really cute though, and I always laugh when the MC's past as a beggar influences his current actions, and he's seen as somewhat crazy by the other characters. I really like the MC and his personality, he's a really sweet guy.

I must say I'M IN LOVE!!!

Truly, the idea of both the MC and the ML dealing with each other's low self-esteem is somehow comforting to see. I really adore each and every of their growth.

Though, it might seems cliché, but it was a good story to me. I myself loves a slowburn type of story, the one that slowly build up feelings through the times they spend together and not something that comes out of forced s*xual tension and stuff is much more of my type. So, to me, overall... more>> it's a 10/10 must read. ^^ <<less

Cliche, but compared to other BLs I've read—it's a change of scenery (like Omegaverse, etc.), finally. Kinda biased since I have a paramount interest in medieval/historical settings. Also, I like the "vibe" of this novel. It's not just "haha, thou art fair, hence I shall ram ye!"/ "haha, he is so sexy, I will ram him."—the author takes the time (one might say too little or enough) to actually build the characters along with telling an entertaining (enough) story.

The characters at the moment, especially Luisen... more>> (MC) are pretty enjoyable! Luisen—as an example—feels different from the generic characters even though he is one of the generics. Most of the generics are annoying, but he's not; his character is attracting! He's kinda the innocent, goody boy, I-want-to-fix-my-mistakes character, and I adore these types of characters, though only when they're excellent written out, of course. Luisen is one of the successfully characterized character so far—really happy about that. Again, very new to my mind to think "wow I don't actually feel like I need to tolerate this MC, pretty likable by himself; no need for me to force that!"

It was a really good novel.

Like others said, there's nothing to complain about here.

The romance relationship was really sweet and wholesome, the plot is interesting, it's not too long but not too short either and I really like BL based in a fantasy-medieval world.

Maybe the route to the capital could have shorter bc it was sometimes a bit frustrating, an maybe I wanted to concentrate even more on the romance side but honestly these are details.

Thanks for the amazing translation too.

Don't hesitate to read this.

It's a fun webnovel if you don't take it too seriously!

By that I mean don't expect... the two protagonists to have their hands on common sense all the time... They're fairly silly, and quite frankly I enjoy it that way. While this review is subject to change as I continue to read, its a fun and fairly easy read. The TL does have a few mistranslations here and there but it's good and fairly unnoticeable.

I do have a few complaints, but it's a little biased coming from someone who likes... more>> kingdom politics and nitpicking however.

Spoiler

The protagonist, Luisen is pretty inconsistent. And to be fair to him? He tells us himself he's not smart, so I really can't pick on him that hard. But I feel as if this aspect may annoy some readers who feel similarly about consistency and such. Despite trying to keep the fact he time traveled from the future, he often slips up in ways often... a little unexplainable? Luckily, Carlton is a simp and is too busy pining to notice.

Additionally, I find some weird inconsistencies in who Luisen was SUPPOSED to have been in the past, and how he acted in the past...? Don't get me wrong in thinking 'oh a BL protaganist who has been with women in the past? That sounds fake' but... Everything I hear about his past personality feels like he simply would not have taken the initiative with women? And... lol... even his attendant didn't really seem like he would push that not going to lie. It feels like after the first handful of the chapters the author felt a bit awkward about Luisen being a "tr*shy" lord, and tried to backpedal. It's not the worst crime of this type of thing occurring and I feel like perhaps the author saw other novels/media with similar ideas... but it's someone transmigrating and not a time travel occurrence? That way it would naturally have that dissonance... Luisen does not have that luxury. I don't particularly mind that "oh he's so different now" because it does make sense, but the inconsistency comes from his past self with his past self?

I mean I would not be surprised if a couple chapters later Ruger goes like "Yeah Luisen wasn't the kind of guy who takes initiative so when women tried to flirt with him he'd just go along with the flow."

Overall: Not a huge deal. I'm assuming if you found this review you've probably have read other BL webnovels and probably should be generally used to this kind of thing. And again, not the worst example of this kind of thing occurring.

Though there could be irritations in the fact Luisen is kind of... oblivious even though he went through suffering, but I don't think it's that far of a stretch for him to be so unaware. He does not learn that well, as he said before, and he has shown times where even though he lived on the streets he did not quite have street smarts. Not only that, some of the obliviousness is through his over-reliance on the future's knowledge.

[collapse]

All in all, a pretty decent read. <<less

Read until C81 and waiting for more chapters. I really appreciate the author not going for an 'MC knows the future so is omniscient' approach, and instead acknowledges the future MC knows are in parts, in his own POV hence imperfect. While his future knowledge helps him, it also hinders him, which is properly executed as the plot unfolds and it's very intriguing. MC's character development is amazing to watch and his relationship with ML is also very cute. It isn't draggy and unnecessarily convoluted w the 'will they get... more>> together drama?' for no good reason (IMO) so there's that.

Anyway, it's a pretty good read so far. Highly recommend! <<less

What can I say? This novel seamlessly blends both fantasy and historical elements, making it exactly my kind of read. Overall, it’s an engaging experience that maintains a thrilling tension throughout while also delivering moments of genuine humor, particularly through its silly misunderstandings.

The characters are well-crafted, and the plot is well-structured, leaving little to complain about. If you're looking to discover some intriguing new books, this one is definitely a must-read!

I put 5 stars because it deserves that. By the way, this is my first time rating a novel a 5 stars even though I've been a reader for 5 years, it's because I believe nothing is perfect BUT this will be an exception. This novel is too good at portraying human imperfections to the point that the novel seemed perfect. I can only describe this as the best novel I have ever read. I don't think I can ever read another novel because of this. This certainly doubled my... more>> standards. I was trying to find a very complex novel that will give me unexplainable feelings and this ONE fit the bill. I love the pacing, plot, vocabulary, slowburn, character dynamics, and their personality. It was realistic despite being a fantasy action novel. The side characters were not just for display BUT they are their own person. It was written as if the novel was simply a novel, no special treatment towards the main characters. I love how equally amazing everyone is. Also, I may get hate if I were to say that my favorite character is Ruger because he did morally evil things but I can't help but admire how well written he was. I admire the author even more tho, they wrote the characters in a way to show how complex humans can be. You cannot fully like or hate characters but as for me, I loved everyone, specially Ruger. <<less

I came from manhwa, and the manhwa did a good job capturing the essence of this novel. This novel is more of fantasy, adventure, a bit of political here and there, with slow burn romance along the way. The love tone isn’t heavily focused on being BL, but more on how two individual grows from cautious to trust and love. The plot is complex and interesting! MC regressed but didn’t become OP. He’s weak but he’s trying really hard to save the situation and stay strong. ML character is interesting... more>> and complex. He seems like an aggressive arrogant mercenary at first, but he also has insecure side, inferiority complex, caring, kindness, rationality. I would love to reread when I forget the story, but since the story’s impression is so strong it’ll probably take me a few years. <<less

It was a sweet, cute, concise, and even funny reading.

I loved the first half. The pace was quick, the characters were properly introduced, the plot didn't drag, and everything, from characters to situations, was useful, I felt like no word was wasted. I even read the first 50 chapters in one day without boredom! I liked it that much.

The second half was still good, just not as much as the first 65 chapters, from then on the plot started to drag a bit, not unbearably not too distinguishable, it was... more>> still a light reading, but compared to the previous part, some points were redundant or treated carelessly until the end
Spoiler

For example: the pilgrim's identity, seizing the castle, the confrontation with the Count, defining Carloton and the Duke's relationship. All the previous points were constantly postponed, even though there were many opportunities to address them,

[collapse]

The ending was a bit too loose for me, many things were left for the last minute but it still worked, so it's not a bad ending, it gave enough closure for important characters.

On the bright side, I liked the author's writing style: concise paragraphs, straight to the point, and every character and "side quest" ended up being relevant. The best part, EVERYTHING came to fit into place very nicely at the end, like a puzzle where no piece was missing nor wasted. Simple but sweet.

It's important to note that neither the MC nor ML are of the annoying type (at least most of the time). Even if Luised doesn't think deeply about some matters, he's not a fool or upsettingly naive. He makes so much progress during the novel, and so does the MC, I loved to see it!
Spoiler

Luised can be a bit too obtuse but Carlon's straightforwardness compensates for it, so there's no separation from the start of their journey to the end. Romance starts properly around ch 75

[collapse]

Some aspects could have been better, but I think the novel achieved its goal and the purpose of its genre. What it announces is what you get exactly, so if you want to have a good time with a light reading about a cute couple, mystery and fantasy, with comedy in between, this is for you. Even though there are more than a hundred chapters I think they're short compared to the usual, so I still consider it a swift reading. I gave it 4 stars because it gave me what I wanted from a romance between a mercenary and a duke, with a touch of drama to keep the novel interesting.

If somebody comes from the webtoon:
Spoiler

the overall novel keeps the same feeling and ambiance. Everything is very similar (at least with what has been released so far), I think it is a good adaptation, so if you liked the manhwa you most likely will enjoy this format too! The 1st season of the manhwa ended around ch 60-65 of the novel, but I recommend reading it all from the beginning to deepen some information.

Good novel! Reminds me of a fairy tale. A little predictable at times, but still funny and entertaining.

The MC and ML have great character development. MC starts out pretty incompetent (he's trying!) and the ML really took the 'enemies' part of the Enemies to Lovers tag seriously at the start.

I really enjoyed seeing the MC slowly start to use his mind. He's still pretty dumb, but at least he's self-aware and has moments of brilliance. ML is super sweet after he falls in love. Bless him.

The side characters and villain... more>> (s) are decent, and the plot was interesting! The novel's best part is character development for the main characters. Wouldn't say it's a mindblowing/groundbreaking novel, but it was a good read. <<less

Main 146 Complete + 1 Side Story

3.91 Stars

Date Read: 8/6/2024

... more>> Personal Enjoyment: 3.7/5

It was ok. I was expecting more because of the high rating and yes, I can see how it got that high. The TL is good, the plot is pretty logical with not much padding, and the setting is a European-ish setting with monsters and religious magic. And the BL is one of the better ones. But the plot was rather predictable to me. I wasn't surprised at any point and I was expecting there to be a surprise twist or something but I predicted the pilgrim almost from the introduction. I read on because I wanted to know about all the twists and turns from the previous lifetime that the MC had not known and yes, those were engaging for me to discover. At C130 ish, I already know and confirmed most of the mysteries and I can predict the rest. At the very end, we find out how the MC regressed and I was surprised that the reason was the most simple reason. The start of all this was just

short lol. I was expecting more. Though it did teared me up in the side story 1, C147 haha.

Plot: 3.9/5

It was simple but complete. The finding out things are different than the MC thought was above average but not mind blowing. Top of light novel level.

Writing/Translation: 4.3/5

The translation I read up to C147 is from Foxaholic. It's pretty good. Some minor grammar mistakes but it's pretty rare and ignorable. Some of the sentences, not sure if it's the TL or the author's writing were a bit awkward. Some sentences will show an oddly childish tone in the choice of words from the Mc's POV.

Pacing: 3.8/5

Most of the story was good. Didn't feel draggy or bored. But then the MC discovered an important benefactor's identity from his previous life and he got hanged up over it for a few chapters. The momentum stalled here for me because I feel that it's a nonissue and/or a really boring thing to fuss over. I can get why he would be but it was so obvious to me the reader that I feel annoyed he only got it now and is making a fuss over it near the end. It might be better if the author emphasised more throughout the story that this would be an issue when the MC finds out. Just power through for 3-4 chapters and then we finally get to the final battle. And a nice happy ending.

Setting/Worldbuilding: 3.9/5

It was different from my usual fare since it's more European. Brief mentions of the different places and all that. It was okay. Could definitely be better but there was some variety.

Characters: 3.9/5

The MC and ML were likeable enough to keep me engaged with the story. Lots of different side characters and antagonists. But a lot of them were still brief and not expanded upon. I like that some of the antagonists got a surprising redemption arc though. However, the main bad guy's reasoning for all his actions fell flat for me. It was so weak.

Romance: 3.9/5

The romance was okay. Some nice direction and turnover in the couple's growth. But once they got together I kinda lost interest a bit. And the latest conflict from the MC's side felt unnecessary. A big contributor for me dropping it here. I don't feel like what happens next is going to be any more interesting. I liked the beginning when they were getting to know each other and falling in love more. Nice happy ending though.

Oof. I actually enjoyed this! Honestly, I didn't expect the story to be really deep, in the whole world building sense. It was meant to be a light read but I genuinely enjoyed reading this, haha. I quite liked the character development as well-

Luisen growing up but still being flawed and Carl also growing. Their dynamic is what sold it to me. So many common bl tropes are pushed aside here.

I liked the emotional aspect they brought out in Carlton instead of Luisen, he's the one who's more delicate and... more>> sensitive to his surroundings all because of how he's brought up. Luisen and him have a super sweet bond and they understand each other, it's so cute how the whole plot come together.

Spoiler

Also Ruger, hah. Honestly I agree that death had to be his salvation so I also felt sorry for him. And all those moments when Luisen's childhood bits came up made me teary eyed because of how proud his retainers were of him. He was just an pampered orphan led astray.

[collapse]

The translation was also amazing, the tler kept it entertaining and informative for us. <<less
