My first novel of this author was Female General and Eldest Princes. I love that series and I wasn't sure if I'd like this one but having disregarded food, sleep and work for a whole week just to binge read this... I can now conclude that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SERIES AND THIS AUTHOR.

I don't regret being an absolute zombie and shrinking on responsibilities for this gem. It was absolutely addictive. I had to force myself to put it down to sleep when the migraine from lack of sleep was... more>> getting too much. No regrets though !

My GOD. The angst, the betrayal, the absolute pure that just poked my heart while reading this, I reccomend it to anyone who likes wlw and actually wants to read an actual story with character and plot development.

PS. I really want to support the translator and author for their hardwork but the instructions to buy chapters in jjwxc is really complicated, does anyone know if they have a patreon or how to contact them to set up a patreon account.. I think this would be really simpler for the simpletons who doesn't get jjwxc.. thanks ! <<less

Fair warning, despite the score, this is going to be a mostly negative review. This is because the score (cut down from 10/10) was from when I just finished the novel, and while I was originally planning to reread and write an actual review, what really ended up sticking with me was the ending, and I simply couldn't bring myself to reread to be left with that ending. At the same time, however, I strongly felt the need to write down and express how much and why I dislike the... more>> ending. So keep in mind that I really really enjoyed most of the book, and what follows is a very negative opinion centered pretty much entirely on the ending portion. It's entirely possible I'm misremembering some aspects since it's been some time, but overall the ending clogs up most of what I remember about this book so it should be mostly accurate.

To put it very bluntly, this author's endings are awful. I think her writing quality is generally very high, and plot progression varies wildly from book to book but is often great (in this book's case it's great), but she cannot write an ending to save her life. So, why did I end up with such negative opinions on this ending that it makes me unwilling to re-experience a book that I rated as exceptionally top tier even when weighing in how awful the ending was?

Spoiler

First of all, I don't believe the ending from a character perspective. At this point in the story, Jingnu and Qi Yan have gone through a lot a lot. Frankly, I would argue a lot of what happened beforehand was worse than what kicked off the ending. I simply do not really believe that it makes sense for Qi Yan to run away to that extent especially when Jingnu gives both strong reasoning for why she's doing what she is from a political perspective (which, as a reminder, is essentially for survival considering how they're still in the relatively tumultuous and politically unstable period after a new emperor, a female one at that, rises) and gives a plan for how they can be punished after the political situation calms down. That's a lot more than can be said for a lot of the earlier conflicts.

I understand that the idea is that now that she's accomplished her revenge and Jingnu is in a position of power, Qi Yan is a lot freer to leave. However, clearly she doesn't consider herself as having fully accomplished her revenge, otherwise this conflict wouldn't exist in the first place. Add in how much the previous conflicts have left both of them reflecting on how much pain and suffering it took to finally be together, and I just don't believe Qi Yan's actions as a response.

Second, I dislike the ending from a morality/fairness perspective. This ending would make significantly more sense and even be in some specific ways cathartic if the story largely involved Qi Yan constantly making sacrifices for Jingnu. However, I would generally argue that over the course of the story, both of them made reasonably equal sacrifices and compromises for the other, and if anything I would argue that Jingnu compromised more for Qi Yan overall. (Feel free to take or dismiss this point as you please; I ended up with the feeling that Jingnu did more for Qi Yan over the whole duration of the book, but trying to justify it further would require the aforementioned reread that's not going to happen so if you feel differently that's fine.)

The counterargument that I can see involves the fact that Qi Yan lost more (her entire tribe and way of life) than Jingnu, but I disagree for two reasons. The first is that I would argue this isn't really relevant to the relationship directly between Qi Yan and Jingnu - if anything, Qi Yan reflects at several points that she's hurting Jingnu despite how Jingnu wasn't really responsible. The second, closely related, point is that I don't believe Qi Yan would hold that against Jingnu. Again, Qi Yan's internal monologue considers herself as hurting Jingnu for things that are not Jingnu's fault, and it was never really brought up even during earlier conflicts where Jingnu compromises because she feels that Qi Yan deserves vengeance. It's possible that Jingnu becoming the emperor makes things feel differently to Qi Yan, but frankly if this is the case I'm very unconvinced it's backed up enough by the actual text and starts to feel like making excuses for the plot instead of examining it.

Finally, I think this ending fails to provide a satisfying conclusion. If the goal was to write a tragedy, then write a tragedy. This ending is claimed to be a happy ending, but then even ignoring everything else, it fails from both a background and foreground plot view. In terms of background plot, the idea that Jingnu can just stop being the emperor and that Qi Yan finds some magical fake death pill does not feel adequately backed up.

In terms of foreground plot, there's quite a few issues. After a big melodramatic plot where both characters reflect multiple times that "it sure is nice that after all of this struggle and suffering we've finally managed to get together, this love really is worth holding onto", ideally a happy ending would provide moments of actual happiness for the characters; it's a reward, like how when a book writes a big political struggle it'd be pretty disappointing if the aftermath was relegated to one sentence at the end of a book, or if a big mystery ends with the criminal just getting away anyways or getting arrested offscreen. There's a reason Sherlock Holmes lays out all the little clues instead of just going "anyways I figured it out, dude's arrested, peace".

Another issue is that amnesia as an ending is almost always an awful idea. Introducing amnesia that isn't later reverted into a relationship naturally makes the relationship feel way more hollow. It strips out all of the complexities, the growing of feelings, the struggles and learning that makes a relationship, especially one as tumultuous and complicated as this one, special. The fact that it's implied "oh well maybe she'll get her memory back later" just makes it worse; at that point just write in her getting her memory back then.

Ultimately the ending feels extremely rushed, has very questionable setup, and even if you don't care about any of that, it more or less feels like it puts the actual happy ending x years down the line, and we just never actually get to see them talking over their problems, reuniting for real, living a life they enjoy, etc.

[collapse]

Anyways this was basically just a huge rant but it was extremely satisfying to finally write out my thoughts on an aspect of a writer that I think severely hurts an otherwise great writer, and hopefully the next time I get annoyed thinking about her books I can look at this review instead of rethinking about the ending from scratch all over again. Hopefully if you're someone who also got very annoyed by how the novel ended, this does something similar to you. <<less

Mm I enjoyed this series much more than the other one. The characters are better written and interesting politics.

Its unfortunate that author likes to drag and add on unnecessary bits to the story. I find this especially true when it comes to the third half of the story. Many new unneeded character that could have simply a reuse of the old one.

One thing I found truly controversial through out the series, is the implication of g*ooming and bedding someone who is mentally unwell and calling it as a romance, even... more>> when they supposedly found happy ending in the end. Trauma bonding or not, I found that whole section quite hard to process.

Its quite disappointing that the author fell into the same pitholes as many cnovel author.. Just in reverse order. Men in her novel are often written in a more 2dimensional manner or they will have interesting background only to be simplified to a trope in the end. I understand it's a genre about women empowerment but it would have made it an even better series should the characters were given the same treatment and depth despite their genders.

Such as the idea she had about the emperor that she mentioned in the author notes, that spirit seems to be quickly dissipated when a certain woman was introduced into the series. I think it could have been more poetic if the duality of the characters are kept consistent throughout the series. I noticed a similar issue in her other series. <<less

This author is absolutely amazing - Baihe is very niche compared to other forms of web novels, and within that, it's hard enough finding good authors. 'Please don't laugh' is one of them,

Finished this book in 5 days because I was sick and lying in bed, and for sure this book did nothing to help my recovery cuz I was reeling and sobbing almost every 5 seconds. Just when you think 'finally, the pain is over and they can be happy together' BAM! Something happens that causes you to... more>> lose all hope again and you sit there going 'why?' and yet YOU KNOW WHY and it makes sense why these horrible things are happening and there's nothing that can be done about it and that makes it all the worse.

This is gonna be a long rant that might have minor spoilers so read at your own risk:

I feel for Jingnu and Qiyan:

The Emperor was not the ruler of the Wei kingdom to Jingnu - he was a father that dearly loved her and sought nothing less than her absolute happiness. He gave her every honour that men could receive in the ancient times without a care because it made her happy. I myself am someone who absolutely adores my father, and he's the person who gave me the will to live throughout all the struggles of my life. If someone were to kill him, even if the mu*derer was the person I loved most, not even ripping their flesh from their bones would be enough to satiate me. So what Jingnu did to Qiyan when she returned...I kind of get.

At the same time, Jingnu needs to understand that as the Emperor, her father unblinkingly called for the genocide and ens*avement of an entire race, all for his own expansion of power and sense of superiority as a Southerner. She needs to understand that those 'millions' that were mu*dered, ens*aved, r*ped, and tortured, are not just figures in a record, but each number was an individual who once breathed and walked the earth. That merely 4 of this million, were once Qiyan's entire world.

I understand Qiyan completely - I love my family. If someone were to impose such injustice onto them; were I to find out that my father died defending his people and his head was mounted on a stake and carried around to dispirit them, my pregnant mother had her twins forcefully cut from her whilst she was still alive, that my sister was r*ped and ens*aved, and my brother was forced to undertake the burden of the survivors on his own... gosh. I can't imagine it. I can understand why she'd want to pursue her revenge, even after falling in love with the daughter of her enemy. I can understand why the guilt on both sides would weigh her down.

The last few chapters of this book almost gave me no hope for a happy ending, and even at the end, the ending is slightly bitter-sweet. It's the happiest ending one can possibly get from a romance that's both clear and muddy like that of Qiyan Agula and Nangong Jingnu...

This was a brilliant book, and it's gonna be a certain re-read in the future. Highly recommend it, but a massive warning for s*xual violence, su*cide, war, graphic death descriptions, and a whole heap of heartbreak and revenge. <<less

Before reading this, prepare your heart for a long and tumultous feelings that you will get.

It's beautifully translated. Full of angst! Like to the point where I needed to take some breaks and yelled to the pillow. I love the characters and their development. The premises and setting were nicely thought of. However, sometimes I feel like the MC is too op and I kinda rooted for the masked person. Too bad everything mostly went smooth for the MC, I feel sorry for the trauma she has to endure.

All in... more>> all, it's a beautiful story about revenge. <<less

I just... can't anymore. Over 280+ chapters later and I'm throwing in the towel. This novel is just WAY too bloated and draggy in the middle. The author could have easily taken out 100 chapters and the results would be the same. I skimmed through a lot. I was excited to start and finish this too. Court conspiracy lesbians, who could resist? But the fact that it took so, so, so long for Qi Yan to finally be revealed just made it so frustrating because Jingnu thinks she's in love... more>> with a man for 2/3 of the novel. Also, Qi Yan is just too perfect, her schemes are always so flawless and things rarely ever go wrong. No one is her equal unless the story calls for one for the sake of convenience. It's just not realistic and there are no stakes at all.

I had more interest in er-jie Nangong Shunu's transformation. The fact that she was an unfavored daughter who was forced to suffer in a loveless marriage for so long and then found her true self in the end was just a much better character arc for me to follow. I got way too attached to her story but was disappointed that there was barely anything there to extract. We only get glimpses of her story with Xiao-Die.

Anyway, knowing that it's a happy ending I'll just happily drop this. There were some parts that felt very angsty and delicious between the two of them and it's out in the open but for the majority of it it's always just in Qi Yan's head. It's too unsatisfying. The writing is excellent and the translation is good. The author is so meticulous in her research and detail so I didn't want to give this a low rating. <<less

I don't know how to properly express my sentiments for this story. I read the whole novel in twelve days cuz I was feeling kinda possessed by it. I went to sleep every night thinking what would happen next and more important how tf PDL would make a happy ending happen in the novel. By the end, I wasn't really sure that a HE would be possible, but it was! The characters, the plot, the world-building, the sceneries that she describes are utterly unique. The slow burn, OMG, is the... more>> most slow burn that I've ever read in my life. Their first kiss comes only after 96 chapters and their first time only after ten years of marriage. Now, the angst.... that sh*t hurts as hell. As I said, I read it all in twelve days, and thanks God I did, cuz I cried every single day I was reading this novel. Well, this review is not useful, maybe one day I will come back to fix it, but right now my mind is only thinking about Qijing. In summary, I highly recommend this story for every person who likes historical novels filled with intrigues and court politics. Oh, one last thing, pay attention to your reading, PDL likes to use informations from earliest chapters to explain certains things in the future. <<less

This is a rather complicated novel for me to rate. On one hand, I think it's a fairly well-written and intricately plotted novel that knew where it was going the whole time. On the other, to misuse Marie Kondo's words, "this does not spark joy". It's got nothing to do with how it's very, very angsty since I'm very good with angst, and I love a good "doomed-from-the-start" tragic story.

Ultimately, I think it's just that my expectations as a reader and where I wanted the anguish and tragedy of the... more>> story to go didn't align with the story the author wanted to tell. The author clearly knew and planned what the story would be like, and I just didn't vibe with it, and that's fine, that's just my personal taste.

The only real complaint I have is probably
Spoiler

the romance between Nangong Shunu and Xiao-Die. I get that the author wants their romance to be between two women with a traumatizing past with men, but I felt rather uncomfortable over the fact that Nangong Shunu fell in love with Xiao-Die's innocence and infantile purity, engaged in a s*xual relationship with her while she was still mentally incapacitated, and yet it was never brought up either by the characters or the narrative.

See I'm pretty blasé with romance tropes in fiction. Explorations of unhealthy, imbalanced, or non-consensual relationships is fine and safe in fiction and I really like them when it's done well. It doesn't have to be put under irl moral scrutiny all the time. With that said, maybe I do have a bottom line, and it's when one half of the pair is mentally in a child-like state. Xiao-Die's condition is temporary and she does recover her adult mentality later on, but it bugs me that it was never a point of conflict for the characters or the story, and that the main conflict of this pairing was only that Nangong Shunu was the daughter of the enemy. I think I would've been fine with it had Xiao-Die been given time to develop outside of Nangong Shunu's protection after her recovery, but even the stabbing incident was a total accident, and was even more somewhat a calculated move on Nangong Shunu's side. I would say that the Shunu-Die romance somehow stunted character growth/potential for both of them.

[collapse]

All things considered, I don't want to give this story a low rating since most of my grievances with it stem from my own preferences rather than the author's writing, especially since there was a middle portion,
Spoiler

between Qi Yan finding her sister up until Nangong Jingnu's ascension,

[collapse]
that I really did feel invested in. The main romance was also really well done; believable development, compelling conflicts, in-character for all involved, and nicely spicy sweet moments. So a 4/5 stars it is. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that wants a long, slow burn enemies to lovers lesbian romance with a mammoth of a plot, and probably not to those who're not into court intrigue/politics or severe angst. <<less

There's no amount of preparing my heart for this novel that would save my soul from being dragged and thrown around the feels roller coaster. I found Clear and Muddy Loss of Love via Melt Strules' (also the translator) fanmade trailer, and that is what primarily made me read it. Aside from the fanmade trailer I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The premise was unique enough to instantly catch my attention, and within just 5 chapters I was already invested in the story of Qiyan Agula.

While... more>> this is possibly the longest novel I have ever read (whoppin 303 chapters!), it was also one of my easiest reads ever. It took me about a week of constant binge reading to finish it, and I didn't find myself losing interest at all. There were a few moments where the story fell off and dragged on, but despite that I found great enjoyment in finishing it. For me the main driving force was Qi Yan's characterization and development of her as a person, whether it was her revenge driven fabricated personality, or the person she was becoming while being influenced by Nangong Jingnu. As for the latter, I also enjoyed how Nangong Jingnu's ''clean slate'' character developed over the time. While I had a few complaints about her, all of them were wiped away when I saw the countless interactions between the two and how their personalities clashed and worked together.

As for the plot, it was really well thought out. All of the plot points were resolved and tied by the end, the planning was fantastic, and I found myself on the edge of my seat during certain crucial moments. There's just the right amount of angst, tension and resolving the issues and that's what makes this novel so great. The revenge plot itself was also VERY well fleshed out, and I was pleasantly surprised to see the character's goals also develop as the story progressed. I LOVED EVERYTHING about it, even the bittersweet ending. I felt as if it was a rather fitting one for them.

I don't regret losing sleep to read this masterpiece in the slightest. I swear I didn't feel so many emotions while reading something in such a long time, I was happy, melting over the fluffy moments, being pissed off or downright crying. A literal roller coaster ride. After I finished the novel I felt so empty because of how attached to the characters I was, and because of the enormous impact it left on me. If you don't mind slow-burn stories and angst, I can't recommend this enough. The writing is PHENOMENAL. <<less

powerful

the whole journey throughout all those long years makes me feel like I was a part of those journeys and the separation from those main characters as a result leaves me with a heavy sentiment. The character development as a result is the strongest point of this novel and leaves other slow burn love stories in the dust. Therefore, the novel's length is its greatest strength. Bittersweet.

aside from that, the author's knowledge and logical thinking style give the novel great substance and has taught me a lot about Chinese values.... more>> Although some parts felt like they were unfit or dragged on in the wrong direction, overall the novel is phenomenal and one I will remember for a very long time. <<less

What can I say except wow. This is certainly one of the best webnovels I have ever read. The translation is similarly impeccable. I started Clear and Muddy Loss of Love almost immediately after reading Female General and Eldest Princess, the author's previous work, so I had high expectations that were definitely met. Wondering how the author makes two fated enemies fall in love? No worries, the author gives beautiful amounts of description, foreshadowing, and plot. The romance is neither the main factor or a background element; it's tied intricately... more>> into each character's thoughts and actions. The conflict is extremely realistically well written, and it feels like the characters are coming off the page with every word. The characters do not act for the author's - or the romance's - sake, they act for their own sake to solve their own problems and further their own goals. All in all, this is a gripping novel that made me binge read into the night for several days straight, shedding innumerable tears along the way. I recommend it to the best of my ability! <<less

This is an amazing story. I don't really know what to say and I have had my first cry in many years, so let's write a review. Yay.

a long time for them to truly realize their feelings - and for Qi Yan's identity to be truly revealed, all while embroiled in plots and treachery. Yum.

Grammar?

While I did notice some errors, they are scattered and do not detract from the story. The translation quality is very, very high, and there are little notes to explain traditions and events. The sentences don't flow awkwardly, unlike mine, though there is definitely a distinct 'I'm reading a translation' feel. It's not a bad thing, one might even say it's delightfully charming.

Feeling/Character Development?

Yes. Just, yes.

Overall, worthy of reading?

Dumb question, but yes. I am an extremely impatient, flighty creature with an attention span lesser than that of a goldfish, and I spent an entire three days pouring through this titanic work. (That is a very, very long time for my interest to linger, ok? Especially without waning. Shh.)

Other than it ignoring the handicap of me being the reader, it is still amazing. Plot, grammar, feelings, gay, gay, gay (important things must be said thrice), intrigue, what's missing? The only bad thing I can think of is the fact that it ends? <<less

One of the first few baihe novels I've read and THIS was not for the weak of heart. Everything about this hurt so good in different ways. Qi Yan's and Jingnu's development in terms of maturity, beliefs and love for each other were all the more reason that I got invested in their stories. From the writing, translation, plot, characters, and everything in between were just perfect.

This novel is great so far! I love the complexity of the characters and the plot! However, I do have one question which I hope someone can answer for me. Why was Qi Yan said to be the prince of the grasslands and have the wolf tattoo of a male descendant? I can understand hiding as a man for revenge since it will give her more influence but why was she raised as one? Clear and muddy loss of love was an exellent story about Qi Yan and how she falls in love with the daughter of her ennemy. The story is really well written and the caracters are all interesting.

However, "Spoiler"

The author just wants to see us suffer (which can sometimes be really good) BUT, the author with the plot just keeps writting senario after senario where everyone suffers and I know it's because of the main storyline, but I just don't like it (I'm talking about sunu's death that really shocked me... more>> just after the reunion between Qi yan and Jingnu and I wanted to stop reading). She didn't really have to die in my opinion.

I was a bit disapointed near the end because apart from the reunion between Qi Yan and Jingnu, the author doens't really develop the relationship between Qi yan and her "supposed kids" as an example. I was so sad for Qi yan's son who never really got to meet his family (I felt he was abandonned by the author).

Also, I felt that there was to mutch detail and I felt that the author could have done so much easier with much less. For me that was the main weakness of this novel because to much detail can get annoyoing to read.

Finnaly, the author doesn't really explain why the 8th Prince killed Sunu (maybe because of how she saw him with the knife? But he wasn't really obligated to kill her in my opinion as she was going to talk him out of it) or where the 7th Prince fled to. Or who was the father of Jiya's kid (I think the 3rd Prince is the dad, but the author doesn't confirm).

In conclusion, I really enjoyed reading this novel, sometimes it drove me crazy, sometimes sad, sometimes happy. I really loved the relationship between Qi yan and Jingnu and I wish we had more chapters of them. It took me 10 days to read it all but it was a very good experience. <<less

I'm personally, not satified with the story. I felt depressed... To me it's really unfair for MC, she suffered enough.

But anyways, even tho the story not satisty me it doesn't mean that this is a bad novel. It's good. It's really good. The world building, the characters development.. Is all good. The slow burn romance in it is also makes sense and logical.
