This author never failed to make me cry badly....

Although there's probably only 1 Female Emperor ever existed in China Dynasties, I feel grateful for author able to grasp the real twisted experience during Dynasty life.

I like the story, I think the story had a great start, just that, my heart couldn't read more until Chapter 270's. I'm a fan of strong or intelligent female protagonist, and this had it. Its just that, my heart aches reading this. I tried reading it again from the start maybe it could arouse my want to read it to the end and also because I forgot how they end up together, but knowing some scenes in the future chapter made this extra painful to read. It made FGEP... more>> felt light. How the characters are written is amazing, the ups and downs in their relationship is absolutely fine. I'm not good at writting a review so bear with me.

I totally recommend it, as for people who managed read to the end and the translators, editors and all the people who worked on this, o7. <<less

Overall this novel is really angsty, filled with political intrigue and romance. However it’s worth it. My biggest complaint is with the ending. It seems quite rushed, and while I like the concept there are still some plot holes that never get resolved...

For example:

Spoiler

The main villain - princess of the previous dynasty - is never mentioned again after she partnered with Jiya to start the war with northern Luo. However she tried to kill the MC and plotted so much against them over and over, yet we have no idea what happens to her. Does she continue to scheme? Did she get defeated? She just stopped being mentioned out of nowhere. Seems like a major flaw from the author, I highly doubt she just gave up and left because it would be highly inconsistent with her character settings throughout the whole novel.

also her 8th brother, Nangong Bao - he was never mentioned in terms of the ending, whether he ever got caught or not. There is an author note alluding to the fact that these are Nangong Fu’s problems, however we don’t really get any closure on this.

At least we get a tiny glimpse into Bayin and Jingwushu’s lives and those of the Chengli tribe.

Also, This whole novel gives Romeo and Juliet vibes, from star crossed lovers to

the faked death towards the end with the pill

I was immersed reading this novel for these past 7days but somehow disappointed on how the author managed to end it.

There is so many potholes! It's like some main plot that was established from the start of the story became useless at the end. (I'm talking about the princess from previous dynasty and the possibility of rebellion from Lu).

It's a good read, sweet and slow. The Empress managed to know the real identity and true s*x of ML after reading 70% of the story and there was this separation of... more>> almost 9 years which somehow became irrelevant even if they got married at early age.

Anyways, I enjoy it but somehow frustrated how they end it rushly. <<less

5/5 One of my favourite.

I can only bow to this author. The way the author can take out the essence of the characters and make it shine is a masterpiece. As if, those characters are really living their lives, not like those robot npc-like behaviour that talk only for the sake of it. Truly a masterpiece.

As for the story, like the others has said, be prepared. It will not be a pleasant journey. Plus if you add the author skills I mention above, it'll have more impact. If you compare... more>> it to the "Female General and the Eldest Princess" (from the same author), you'll notice it's way, waaaaaay more heavy. Prepare for angst.

At last if I was ever asked to read this novel again, I will answer with a: No. Unless...

Unfortunately the author has taken out too much and given in too little. As a reader, my heart suffered from the story, from the characters... I sincerely wished there could be more reward of good and light at the end, to indulge myself for reading such a heavy story... It's really just my only complaint. <<less

This. Novel. Is amazing.

I literally spent three whole DAYS binge reading this because the characters, the plot gripped my attention from the very beginning.

And I couldn't wait to see if there was truly a happy ending at the end.

So much angst T_T and the character development! I could FEEL the characters emotions. The author who wrote this is sooooo talented and the translators did an AMAZING job. If you're looking for a riveting tale of true love, look no further.

I regret not writing a review when I finished this novel. I finished it back a few years ago, so my memory might be a little bit fuzzy. I won't be able to form such a yappy review like I do my other ones.

For me, this novel is more of a 3-1/2, but I rounded it up to 4 stars. Pdl has an amazing way of writing. Her wording is always very good, and Melts is an excellent translator.

I think most people know the general idea of jwqs. Qiyan Agula... more>> who is pretty much the only survivor of the genocide of her people is determined to use her life to kill the kingdom responsible for it. In the process of it, she ends up falling in love with her enemy's daughter, Nangong Jingnu

The plot is beautifully executed. Qiyan Agula is brilliant from point A to point B to point Z. Seemingly, she can figure her way out of anything. I personally liked how she was not physically strong at all, but she was brilliant, and that was how she managed herself. She used brains, not brawn. Qiyan Agula is one of the top main characters for me of my favorites.

Nangong Jingnu is perfect! I love a character who shows so much growth and becomes something powerful. She's so good. These two are an excellent pairing.

All the side characters were so good. Jingnu had so many siblings... It was hard to keep track, but it gave Qiyan more challenges to go through. It was a nice touch. All of Qiyan's allies were good too, like her Qi Tong (?). Again, it's been a while. Wah. Can't remember many names.

Gongyang Huai was a sweet ally who wanted to help Qiyan but was afraid of the system. A good example of someone who was torn between his close friend and his life. Ding You stayed by her from beginning to end, supporting her choices even though he questioned them. A good close friend of found family next to her.

Nangong Sunu and Shunu were both wonderful elder sister's for Jingnu. She needed their love and support. Nagsi Jiya was a fun twist to the novel being someone who knew both sides. Definitely one of the top interesting characters of the novel. Guqi Bayin was another great character who was a good loyal brother of Qiyan who was someone that was torn between his love and care for the brother-bond he had with Qiyan and the action of revenge against the kingdom.

This novel is very long, and the real romance doesn't really get into it for a large portion of the novel. That's fine for me! I enjoy novels that attack the plot first and then dip into the romance, so I actually liked this portion, however, the slowburn was really slowburn. Sometimes political things happened just to happen. Like when I mentioned Nangong Jingnu having a lot of brothers. It kind of felt like Pdl added them for more people to throw at Qiyan.

Some things and ideas were left abandoned. Like Gongyang Huai was a clear friend of Qiyan. Everyone knew it. Considering the ending and how furious Jingnu was, I see no reason why he would not be questioned by her personally, yet she didn't. The ending, when everything was going down, was only focused on the pair of them, and suddenly, any other character became irrelevant.

Jwqs feels like a novel created with many things to see what Pdl could write in a mashup. Like as if she was testing her skills. "Oh, can I throw this with this? Does this work? Let me try it." and she did and it exploded. It also felt like she got burnout of her own story and started throwing things together to quickly end it. Ugh.

I loved this novel. I genuinely was on the edge of my seat the whole time while reading it. It took me around ten days. I literally would wake up and read until it was time to go to bed. (COVID time... I was in quarantine and couldn't go to work). Then I finished it and... huh. There were things I disliked. I'll put them into spoilers:

The relationship surrounding Shunu and Xiao-die:

Spoiler

Xiao-die is Qiyan's younger sister who also survived the genocide. She's found and brought into the kingdom. Shunu is Jingnu's elder sister. The two end up meeting in the kingdom, and the two end up falling in love. Which is fine! But... considering Xiao-die's mental state, it's kind of odd. After what happened to her, Xiao-die has the mind of a child. Shunu completely took advantage of her and should not be romantically interested in her.

[collapse]

Pdl's endings:

Spoiler

I've read two of Pdl's novels: jwqs and ruzhui. Both are her longest novels with around 300-ish chapters. In both of these long novels in which she dedicated so much work to, her endings are so... grah!!! What!!!!??? She writes so much and so well all to give probably the most lazy endings I've ever read. Amnesia? Are you serious? Qiyan goes through years and years of suffering and successfully gets revenge for her people and you're telling me that she... doesn't remember any of it? That she doesn't even remember the woman she loves either? That the only person she remembers is Ding You, and she hardly remembers him? Like it's so... annoying. And s*upid. It's frankly so s*upid. Even if she continued with that same point: Ding You getting her out of there by faking her death and escaping to hide in a town far, far away and Jingnu finding them after going nuts feeling like she was alive---even that without the amnesia would have been such a good ending. But it just infuriates me so much with the amnesia and forgetting it all. What was even the point?!?! The revenge was for her, but she doesn't even know it happened. Ugh. The whole novel went through this theme of not having anything like spiritual---not even cultivation! Suddenly, there's a magic toad??? Whatever.

[collapse]

I'm sure there are more. Again, I read this so long ago, but these are the two that really stand out to me.

I only recommend jwqs to people if you can read 300 chapters and not be annoyed by a poor ending. <<less

This novel was an opening into the world of Chinese short stories. I won't say it's a good start. How many tears have I shed reading this story, from beginning to end. The first 100 chapters, as I understand it, are purely a warm-up before a storm of glass. So that you can safely read and enjoy the leisurely reversals. Then the acceleration of that very plot begins.

Plot: There are many questions for him. Not a word about the princess of the last dynasty. This is probably the author's biggest... more>> joint, namely the joint. Because with a couple of suggestions to end her branch, well, it's funny. Considering what a colorful figure she was throughout the novel. Otherwise, everything was fine.

Characters:

And here there is something to say. Almost all the characters turned out to be very deep. With injuries, flaws.

Spoiler

Nomin, I didn't like how the author emphasized her mental health, and how godlessly he omitted her development, but it was slightly shown. How she became friends with the eldest princess. BUT let the formation of their love, with such a serious mental level of development of Nomin, was not normally leprosy. Their love thread looked ridiculous, to be honest, I understand that there was no way to reveal it better based on the time that was allocated to them. Probably it was worth giving them a separate branch with more time then. I do not know, to be honest, I partly believed their feelings and did not believe them. It's a strange branch for me.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Even more ridiculous, I see how the author "dealt" with the ex-husband of the eldest princess. Well lol, did he do that and ended up dying almost like a hero?? At this point, I was ready to strangle the author. Moreover, not only in this novel by the author, she sins so much. Well, thank you, at least he really died. Maybe rude, but after reading the novel I think. You will understand me. I won't name names, but in fact, I think he is the biggest antagonist of this story. On an equal footing with those ministers who killed Agula's mother.

[collapse]

Okay, for the rest, I would like to say that the main characters of the story came out very, very painful. Very well thought out. Throughout history, we have seen the growth not of a Shark, but of Nangong Jinyu. Despite Agula and thanks to her, her wife grew up to be an incredible lynch. I think Agula didn't talk about it, but she was very proud of her. She raised her, made her who she is. It's not like Jinyu didn't do anything herself. She's probably the author's favorite character, and not only that. Mine too. An incredible woman, and as time has shown, a wonderful ruler.

Agula, oh, this is a strong girl who had to become a "man". And although I don't like such a path, but here it is perfect. She became a better "man" than all the men in this novel. Strong, but fragile. Although the author tried to show how full of revenge she was, her thoughts were gentle. Yes, she was almost done with her revenge. To be someone else all my life, not myself. And it was only with Jinyu that she became herself in the end. It's a pity, it took so much pain to go through.

The final:

I think, despite everything, that he is good. There could be no other way.

Spoiler

Yes, I don't quite understand Agula's act with her "staged death", but only partially. If you look at it from her point of view, it really was a logical thing to run away at last and stop being not yourself. She gave up at the end, the only thing, even though she left a hint for her lover. She did a terrible thing to her anyway.

[collapse]

But they were able to stay with each other. Someone did not understand that the author made it clear, she will definitely remember. Not now, yes, but he will remember. And also in the epilogue there was a hint of the arrival of Shark's sister, the re-wedding of Agula and Jinyu. So if someone didn't understand, the sister eventually found out that she was alive. After all these years, they still managed to. After so many obstacles, it's really a bittersweet ending. But he's happy.

I would like to wish you separately, if anyone suddenly reads this, take your time. This novel is worth it, it's bitter. There's more pain and suffering for the characters, but it's worth it.

I also wish everyone a wife like Jinyu, who was ready to do anything for her beloved. I protected her from the whole world and found her without ceasing to search all over the world. It's touching. Their love touched my strings. <<less

i should have written a review a couple months back when I finished this novel, but im here to say that after hearing so many great things for over two years, I finally sat down and read it earlier this year after the announcement that it was getting licensed in english. I had heard that this novel would have so much angst considering the enemies to lovers tag that plagues our two main leads; qiyan agula and nangong jingnu, a "prince" from the jing kingdom in the north, and the... more>> only legitimate princess of the wei kingdom in the south.

safe to say that the angst was definitely there and the author really makes sure it hits when it needs to. I found myself anxious and tearing up, and almost dreading everything by the time I got halfway into the novel. Of course, at the heart of this angst is our main couple who spent majority of the novel as a couple but theres a lot of secrets, scheming, pain, love, and remorse interwoven between the two of them. As the relationship progresses (both positively and negatively), I continuously found myself question how it could have a happy ending, how their love for one another could make it to the end.

it almost seemed hopeless to think that their relationship can withstand the politics of their world both gender along with the imperial court that shows its ugly head as the novel gets closer to the end.

this novel actually likes to deal with the way gender plays a huge role in the story, with how nangong jingnu's status as the legitimate princess gives her leeway to do almost anything she wants, is favored heavily by her father and given land and riches on par with her step-brothers, doesnt change the fact that shes not a candidate for the throne simply because she's not a man. Even in her own married to qiyan she's not allowed to share the same room with her at night too many times or else she will gossiped about for being too eager, but if she doesnt go enough, then shes not doing her duties as a wife. Similarly we have nangong shunu; jingnu's second older sister who isnt a favored princess, as well not a legitimate princess who couldnt divorce her own husband because it would not only bring shame to the royal family, but that she wasnt thinking of the bigger picture of what her marriage entails, even though her husband is a horrible man to her.

i could go on to describe how gender politics affect qiyan agula, as well as another prominent female character, but I feel like thats something future readers can discover on their own because frankly theres so much depth going on that I could be here all night going through everything. Literally just please give this a try at least once in your life because it feels like my life was altered and I cant go back to a time where I didnt know who qijing were or what this amazing story was. <<less

First time I actually love a historical novel without fantasy elements. First time I've read through authors notes diligently too because I really wanted to know what the author is planning.

I've always loved scheming characters so I love the main character on this one especially since she's a woman.

Regarding the romance, I have to be honest if this novel was in FL's POV and MC wasn't a woman, I would've hated MC and say that the she didn't deserve FL at all. But they're both women with awful experiences and... more>> despite all that, they remain strong. And that makes me feel like wanting to hug both of them instead. The complex characters and the complicated layers of the situations they are in makes it hard to hate anyone.

This isn't really my first GL novel but this is the first GL novel I've read until the end. I've read this during finals week too so imagine how so absorbed I was! Even though I wasn't that satisfied with the ending, the journey to it was really amazing.

I have to agree with the other reviews saying that the first half was good and the second half felt rushed. There's a bit of loose ends but I guess the reader doesn't have to know everything. But! I'm happy because it's HE. I genuinely enjoyed reading this so I might try more gl novels!

Also, thank you to the translator for such good quality translations! <<less

This is such an amazing novel! Definitely one of my favorite translations as well, so thank you to the translation team!

The characters are so well-developed, especially the main pairing, and each of their motives feel so real and compelling. I absolutely adore Agula's character, and though I was indifferent to Jingnu at first, she really captured my heart by the end. This is by far the best lesbian pairing I've read, and I love how the plot takes priority without shoehorning in the romance.

It is an *extremely* slow burn, but... more>> if you have the patience for longer stories and political intrigue, I highly recommend this novel! <<less

Another banger from PDL and great translation by melts. It's basically one of those 'pics taken seconds before disaster' memes that goes on to include the disaster itself and the devastation of the aftermath, stretched out over 300+ chapters. Real 'trainwreck you can't look away from' stuff - with yuri.

My one issue is the ending. The only reason I was able to stick it out through all horrible stuff that happens is because we were repeatedly promised a happey ending. And we did get one. Sort of. But 300 chapters... more>> of schemes, and betrayals, and atrocities, and loss were given a somewhat unsatisfactory conclusion in chapter 303 and barely expanded upon in chapters 305 - 307. Not to mention chapter 304.

Spoiler

Why even bring up Yanru and Ningxiang (?) if it not to share the reason she changed from kind, exemplary princess to someone who... just wants to see the world burn? 304 was unnecessary but if it had at least given a more concrete motive for Yanru's actions and told just what on earth happened to her in the end, it would've at least had the merit of giving a greater sense of completeness to the narrative that the ending lacked.

[collapse]

Any of those last 4 chapters could've been replaced with just one chapter describing a scene where the characters we've come to love enjoy each other's company on a joyous occasion

and maybe a glimpse of their futures.

Based on the endings of this book and of Matrilocal Marriage, and a few mentions of Female General and Eldest Princess that I've seen, the author could improve somewhat with her endings. There's definte talent worth supporting here, however. And I'm eager to see how her writing improves in future works. <<less

After finishing this novel I'm left with a love of emotion both happy and sad one, starting with the good spoiler free review, the author is simply amazing the amount of detail they put into the story is just incredible almost everything they mention has a meaning and will comeback at some point, and even the most lackluster character end up having meaning and depth, instead of reading a novel the author way of writing will make you feel like you're living it and every part of the main cast... more>> of character will fill like a good friend by the end of it, I don't usually watch or read period pieces the characters are so compelling that all the restrictions of the period didn't bother me like it usually would, I would say this author is a master a grasping what is it that trigger the suspension of disbelief in readers.

Having say that the author is not perfect (obviously), and his weaknesses are pretty bad, I would have never thought that a novel with 303 chapter where most chapter have 6000 words, would have a rushed ending but surprisingly it does and it seems to be a continuous struggle for the author since another novel of them called "Female General And Eldest Princess" suffers from the same problem, I haven't read that one so I don't know how bad it was then but holly Molly it was atrocious here I comment more why in the Spoiler part.

Her other main weakness is they obsession with counting how many words they chapter had (she leaves comments under some of the chapter to let us know of her life and how awful the reader from the original publisher are, which I partially blame for the rushed ending they really made the author like hard, but well, in most of those comments they would mention how many words that chapter had or the whole novel had), I can't really say how much influenced (if any at all) reaching a word count had in the chapter but boy o boy what an exorbitant amount of filler some chapter had, lord jesus, the first 2 extra chapters where especially ridiculous, after having a rushed ending you would think the author would fill some of the plot holes with the extra, instead they wasted the second extra chapter by recounting what happened in the first one but from the point of view of character we don't really care about (is not a biased opinion, this character is mention maybe 5 times in the while novel before the extra ep, is literally someone imposible for us to care about), half the extra chapter wasted when she could just resume it to maybe a page.

-----Spoiler‐-----

I Really think that the readers from the original publishing page are mostly to blame for the rushed ending, with the way she didn't waste a word up until chapter 280 is impossible to belive she would never mention Nangong Li and Nangong Bao again even when talking about Sunu death with her husband, I know in real life you don't get to tight all lose end in ones life, so I was not hoping for every single plot point to have a resolute ending but at leas "Even with the power of an emperor finding old eight ended up being something imposible for Nangong Jingnu to do before dying" or whatever, literally anything that would let me know that the author didn't forgot them, but we got nothing, same with the princess from the last dynasty we could have got something like "nobody knew if the princess stayed at the north of Luo to live out the rest of her life or if she came back south but for as Long as Agula lived, the princess didn't plot against the kingdom again" I mean she was the main anaragonist, hello?, we have some random mention of the future around the 280 chapter that we didn't need at all but letting us know what happened to the princess was to much to ask? Really? Why tell us her past then? Ridiculous, and couldn't we get a Reunion fronthe twins? A visit from Xiaodie? No?

Whatever I got to emotional at the end, but is so infuriating the author I spend time with for 280 chapter was not the same one that wrote the last 30, and if they was gonna cave in to the criticism of the reader in the original page, she should have cut on the descriptive filler instead of that incomplete ending, or rather since she really enjoy describing everything and she writes the best when she's being true to themselves she should just add 10 more chapters, I think she could fill the holes in that time and it wouldn't mattered to readers the novel was already 300 chapters long (more than 1, 000, 000) everyone who hated of slow of a burn it was was gone anyway. <<less

Clear and Muddy Loss of Love was an amazing read. Thanks to melts for translating and sharing the whole story of Q Yan and Jingnu. I think the romance wrapped nicely in the end but there were a lot of loose ends regarding worldbuilding.
Spoiler

Towards the end there was an attack on the Wei kingdom during the Winter and once the river thawed the story shifted to focus on Qi Yan and the story kind of ended like that. I wish we got to see the end of the princess from the old dynasty because I don't believe she wouldn't have launched another attack the next Winter. I wish her character and personality were explained more.

The slowburn was so good especially watching the main cp change over the course of many years, especially Jingnu's development and how Qi Yan slowly falls in love with her.

Genuinely the best romance that I've ever read, this is an enemies to lovers slow-burn angst filled nightmare dream sequence that's so wonderfully thought out and clever. Please there's nothing more to say, please read it.

ps. I felt so empty after finishing this that I still don't think I'm fully over it like a year later

okay, sooo I finished reading the novel a few days ago but I forgot to write my review.

I would give 5 stars to the characters, bc they were really well developed, each one of them was interesting and felt real, they made mistakes, they fall in love, they get sad, they get angry, they get happy. It was very good in this aspect. Qiyan and jingnu are very smart women, although they are very impulsive, specially jingnu, but they have their goals and motivations, and I like that of them.

jingnu... more>> had a really grand char development, and I felt like I was my child growing up, she went from a reckless, pampered girl, to a magnanimous and strong woman, that was amazing.

qiyan always resorted to arson, which I find funny haha, but she's so very smart, so intelligent, like wow, I was amazed by her, how she plots so many things far ahead, that's whew-

the side characters were also pretty good, specially the shifu, I like her a lot. About the nangong sisters, I didn't really enjoy Shunu's development, I felt it lacked a bit more impact, her first half of her story was so heart wrenching and I was looking forward to her growth, but I felt it underwhelming. Howeverrr Sunu!!! She's so perfect, , , , i- she's the best eldest sister, she's funny, she's smart, dedicated and strong, *cries*

Spoiler

I understand she had to die because the past dinasty princess was born from a "star of bad luck" and she would bring tragedy to her loved ones, , , , but I still can't accept that sunu died just like that

About the plot, I give it 5 stars too. It shows that the author was very meticulous with it, she took care of details and she planned it a lot. I never got bored, since something was always happening, there was drama everywhere. Yet I never got bored, or didn't understand or it wasn't clear enough or nonsensical.

For the pacing I give it 4 stars, because everything was very cool, but I didnt like how the author closed up thing, I felt it was so rushed, like she wanted to finish asap and left many plot holes for the side characters. You couuld also say it's an open ending for the rest, , , , and I dont like that kind of endings

Just gotta mention if you're not into slow burn, like REAL slowburn, you probably shouldn't read this, because it's more about politics, court drama, and revenge, than the actual romance, which starts veeeeery later on the story and it's really slow <<less

This is simply a really good novel. The characters grow so much from the beginning to the end, but sincerely love each other leading to a slightly bittersweet (but satisfying) ending together. The plotting is sublime and there are no plot holes. Overall an excellent read and would recommend it not only for the romance but the impeccable historical drama as well.
