Empires rise and fall on the Yulan Continent. Saints, immortal beings of unimaginable power, battle using spells and swords, leaving swathes of destruction in their wake. Magical beasts rule the mountains, where the brave – or the foolish – go to test their strength. Even the mighty can fall, feasted on by those stronger. The strong live like royalty; the weak strive to survive another day.

This is the world which Linley is born into. Raised in the small town of Wushan, Linley is a scion of the Baruch clan, the clan of the once-legendary Dragonblood Warriors. Their fame once shook the world, but the clan is now so decrepit that even the heirlooms of the clan have been sold off. Tasked with reclaiming the lost glory of his clan, Linley will go through countless trials and tribulations, making powerful friends but also deadly enemies.

Come witness a new legend in the making. The legend of Linley Baruch!

This is the most typical xianxia I've ever read. I don't understand how could people rate it 5 stars. I mean, even if I'm absolutely new to xianxia, I wouldn't have rate it pass 3.5 at most.

MC with heavenly luck (I call it lazy plot device). Old grandpa in divine treasure. Revenge Plot. Self-Righteous hypocrite. Thick plot armor. Underrated protag. Face slapping other genius. Countless brainless mob characters that offend MC due to s*upid reasons for the sake of glorifying MC might and giving him EXP and loots. Recycle Plot.

Nothing new. Absolutely NOTHING. The even more frustrating thing is that MC luck is probably the most ridiculous among many xianxia's MC I've ever read. Just by reading a few chapters into the novel you'll notice how lucky he was.

Spoiler

First, he got divine artifact hidden in his own house for years by luck. The grandpa in the ring coincidentally was a magus with the same attribute as MC so he taught MC magic. Then he stumbled upon OP magical beast in his backyard and make it his. Not only the grandpa in the ring helped him progress in Magic. He also taught MC sculpting skill so that MC could conveniently earn both Money and progress in his magus rank even faster. He luckily find herb for awakening his bloodline while training in the magical beast mountain. Not long after, he encountered a 9th rank dragon which he needed its blood to awakening his bloodline. That dragon was coincidentally dying due to injury from the fight with another monster. Making him able to consume its blood. He even got lucky to accidentally consume its magic core. At the same cave he found the dragon, he tr*shed around to test his new power only to accidentally find the hidden magic formation above the cave ceiling which have another divine sword for him to conveniently stole it for his own use.

[collapse]

See? He was lucky to the point that if he want something you can expect him to get it soon by the mighty the plot device.

oh, another annoying thing is the way author tried very hard to justify his action. But if you objectively saw it. You'll find out that Linley was just a typical self-righteous hypocrite Protagonist who think the world revolve around him.

The romantic subplot was badly written as well. But I'll let it slide since I did not read xianxia to get touchy teary anyway.

Colling Dragon is one of the first CN novel i've read and it's so far the best. No harem, no clichés, no strong plot armor, no s*upid OP item...

The novel bring a lot emotions, sometimes it's sad, funny, or you will feel anger against antagonist, sometimes MC is desesperate but the entire story you will feel MC become stronger and stronger but not in a s*upid way like eat some pills or natural treasures like a s*upid endless shitty novel (MGA), but by the dao comprehension and it will... more>> take millions years.

This novel is totally worth to read, 800 chapters is quite short for a CN novel but it's 800 chapters of the best quality and it's translated by RWX from WuxiaWorld so it's a awesome quality translation.

So I have only 1 word to say: ENJOY. <<less

This is the story than introduced the xianxia genre to me. I'm glad I got to read this story. I find it simply awesome! I really like the fact that the MC has only one wife and he was loyal to her.

The action, adventure, fantasy and romance in the story were excellent.

Thank you for this wonderful story.

Because of this, I became a fan of I Eat Tomatoes and got interested with the xianxia genre.

This story is definitely worthy of 5 stars!

Hey guys there is NTR in this story, even though I always tag it on someone removes the tag, and after that I got banned from editing tags for awhile since I got accused of trolling for spamming the NTR tag since I kept re tagging it after some guy removed it (a mod unbanned me after hearing me out though, thank god)

I'm sure some people will blatantly defend this series since its a nostalgia series for lots of readers when they were starting out and can't recognize good... more>> or bad, and only hype or no-hype. I'm sure most of you new guys contemplating whether to read it will have tons of people recommending this series to you, and there begins your flawed journey of seeking out NTR novels unconsciously.

I'm mostly just making this review to warn the new guys who will inevitably fall into this trap and in turn be brainwashed and start recommending this novel to other newbies and start yet another cycle of tragedy, and also because I was also once tricked when I was a newbie and had no one to warn me this novel had NTR while I was riding the hype train.

Stay safe kids, go to school, and don't do coiling-dragon <<less

Along side many NL that I've been reading, Coiling Dragon will probably be the most rememberable NL that I have ever read. The series of stories that creates an unending plot gives me the never ending love for this book. It is also, my very first LN, and I read it 3x.

By understanding how IET writes, you will basically understand that his books starts with a meaningful but slow start. I don't know what all the other comments are saying. "I read the first 20 chapters"..... and you're done? You... more>> have 786 more to go... *face slap*. Basically, the beginning introduces the character and why he becomes stronger. Although I would not ever skip even for for this book, the time it starts to climb the plot graph is volume 4. But take my word, the book is amazing. He creates a character that gives a steady flow of their meaning of their continuous strength.

By looking at the description, it involves a boy a named Linley Baruch. His background is very prideful, known as the Dragonblood Warriors. It once was a legend brought upon his ancestral time, but now, you read a legend brought upon Linley.

The world begins in a place called the Yulan Continent and progresses to 'godly' worlds that Linley will adventure to. The series of adventure brings in a world that can only be imagined. As for to know why the title is called Coiling Dragon is very particular for IET and will be relevant to the story.

The combat is described throughout, with no 'one hit' kind of thing. IET does a good job at keeping it interesting. Linley is a smart character, in which, bring a series of action to create a tense 'reading' atmosphere.

Linley is a person who protects who he loves and has a relation with. He is loved by his father and brother. To not let his father's pride down, Linley reaches out for knowledge and strength. When Linley learns more of his current family history's, he begins a quest to relinquish his thirst for revenge. Although revenge seems a bit too common and predictable, it makes a transition that leads to an unexpected sort of event unexpectedly. He acquires friendship throughout the story, and the friendship brings a relaxed atmosphere of brotherhood.

A commonly known style that IET writes is that his romance is really slow at start but how he conveys love really gets to the emotions (for those who have not read it will not understand, but I did tear up on a part in CD). I really love how he explains his writing; it makes me feel like I understand how Linley feels. When Linley first starts learning of the romantic feelings, IET explains well how his heart is. Linley is really loyal to his love, and he doesn't have a thought process of doing anything s*upid. He is smart and thinks about the people around him.

Reading many other books, I noticed that as the characters get stronger, they tend to have an undying emotion. What I mean is that nothing is able to hinder the leading character, as the he/she is known to be strong. IET denies this and brings a lot of plot twists that grabs your attention.

-------Although I really love IET's books, a common thing he tends to do is that as his characters gets stronger, he tends to throw out side characters. But IET throws them out because his main characters are strong and needs to progress.--------

But in particular, IET rushes his endings. It does make me feel disappointed, in which, the story could be more productive and exciting. Not only does this go for CD, but also his other writes. But what can you say, how it is, is just how it is.

Whenever people ask me that they want to start NLs, I always introduce CD. It brings a world of fantasy and emotions that enables you to dive into the story. <<less

Finished this back in 2016 and liked it.

This was one of Xianxia novels that did not include a harem.

The MC treaded on his cultivation path with a single pet companion. He treasured his friends and loved ones, especially he devoted his love to a single woman and spent many life and death battles with her.

It's not the worst thing I've read, but it definitely wouldn't be nearly as highly rated if it wasn't the first for many people. There's a pretty average number of plot holes, the MC is super lucky, and of course the MC is biggest genius to ever exist (in terms of cultivation at least...).

The reason I give it a 2 despite most of it being average is how annoying the MC is. His relationship with women is irritating, but even worse is how generally dumb and impatient he is. He... more>> constantly rushes into situations that he only survives due to plot armor, where he would be perfectly fine if he just waited a bit and prepared properly. Each of those two things on their own would be annoying enough already, but combined?

Here's an example of what I mean about women:

Spoiler

he constantly refuses free brothel women and ignores all women in general, including the obvious likely love interest who is clearly into him. That would be fine, MC focusing on cultivation instead of women is whatever... but then he falls for some rando as soon as he meets her?? After being together a bit he ends up cucked and ghosted, but soon after he considers her "a friend he's on good terms with" and even saves the guy who cucked him (and tries to harm him after) ???

[collapse]

Here's an example of him being ret*rded, actually the one that made me drop it:

Spoiler

he finds out a super important person harmed his family many years ago, so he wants revenge. He then decides to just go for it in the capital of the faction enemy belongs to, despite knowing that there are multiple people around that he stands no chance against... he doesn't even consider the super important enemy might have defense treasure! He could easily just wait until he has enough power to do it or there's a good opportunity, but no. Minimal prep, goes all in.

"just an op MC", "has too much luck" stop kidding me! He literally fails so many times, almost dies, loses important people, works hard, fails in love but then meets his real love, is talented but just proud and not arrogant, cares for his friends, goes on interesting adventures, kind of a bad father but he realises that, after reading so many novels, I still feel it's one of the best along with douluo dalu...

The only thing he lacks is character development.. it's like he's a mature guy since... more>> childhood.. which kinda doesn't make sense. <<less

Honestly one of the best stories. Has solid basic plotline of goals (Why he wanted to get strong, why he wanted revenge), extremely enjoyable romance near the halfway point and just really enjoyable read. One of the staples of cultivation.

2.5/5 at best

overall a good story and probably one of the best I have read of this type of genre (cultivation, power-up through fortune encounters/hard-work/genius) because it is well written and the author knows how to keep tension in a cultivation story as often times in these stories, the protagonist tends to outgrow all of his enemies too fast.

it also hits a soft spot for me because I only ever like to read about ruthless, clever and hard-working protagonist

Negative Comment:

Spoiler

negative comment: where it falls short for me is after the necropolis arc, where it feels repetitive and the goal/purpose of the story seems to have been completed and hence the new goal of reestablishing the protagonist's clan seems to be losted to me because the character's new purpose/new goal wasn't as strong as the original goal that was in the earlier chapters where it was about him getting stronger and recovering his clan's heirloom. Also at that point, many characters are introduced but seems to get lost in the narrative. A good example is Zassler who is introduced as a rebellious powerful old man that is only a level lower than Linley at the time he appears. At the time of Zassler's introduction, I was incredibly interested in him and how his character would play off against Linley since they seemed to be at odds to each other and at the time the author build him up to be an important strong side character. But as the narrative progressed, Zassler had less and less air time and 100 chapters later, he seems to all of a sudden act subservient to Linley without explanation. Zassler's character relationship to Linley could have been done better because it shared similar elements to Linley's relationship with his grandpa and the author could have used it as a chance to convey a theme which could have guided and conveyed their character development better for both character and make us care more about them. Linley's relationship with Zassler is a prime example but this problem of character development appears throughout the light novel, Hogg's strict character playing the demanding father yet somehow being protrayed as a loving father without it being earned or questioned by Linley, Linley's inhumane ability to be the perfect filial son, every female character being one dimensional (need I say more?). The only character relationships I found to be realistic was Linley's relationship with Alice and to an extend his relationship with his four bros and his grandpa (and this is me, trying to scrap the bottom of the barrel). I think this is the most glaring issue I have with the light novel even thought the LN had an incredibly strong start. I understand that the author was focusing on Linley's journey through the cultivation world to Godhood but this speaks to me as a sign that either the author did not plan his narrative well if he had to rely on side characters as plot devices in order to advance the story another 500 chapters or so after the inital goal of the MC was completed or he lacks human experiences to be able to write believable relationships.

[collapse]

Overall however it is a good read and can captivate a reader because it is well written (author knows how to describe things and write in LN style without boring the reader with descriptions of useless things or angering them for skipping too much), author knows how to build tension in key moments in terms of the fights that Linley has to face, and the light novel seems to be well researched and well thought-out in terms of the profound laws which I believe has its inspiration from daoism and internal martial arts. It has a strong start, a midling middle but doesn't hold my interest passed chapter 250-300. <<less

Coiling Dragon was one of the first web novels I have read so I may be biased. I think it’s very suitable for people who are just beginning to read translated novels. You can binge read all you want and the plot isn’t overly complicated with super schemers. It’s pretty straightforward and enjoyable. Definitely deserves to be a classic, at least for me. Don’t be deterred by people analyzing every detail of the plot, as it certainly isn’t perfect. But please give it a shot and maybe when you’re done... more>> it’ll hold a special place in your heart as well. <<less

Boring up to Book 3, Chap 17.

Plot: 0. Boring. No complex interactions between characters. Up until now, it's all about MC leveling up. Nothing more to it. He was Magus lvl1, 2 for a long time, and suddenly jumped to lvl 5 in a few sentence. Narrowed, one way plot.

Challenge: 0. None. It's all about the MC leveling up.

MC: 0. Special help Saint lvl master and the pet. There was no build up. Suddenly within a few sentences, someone tried to kill/stab him. He was hit, but pet jumped into... more>> save him for being careless.

Romance: 0. None.

Drama: 0. No build up. No challenge. No losses. No complex interaction. Boring plot.

Comedy: 0.

I am hard to please. My taste are the same for most.

But I can endure some badly written novel.

I got a lot of time to read and have read a lot of titles.

... more>> This is to let you know that I got a lot to compare with against this novel.

And what I can tell about this novel is, that this is what fantasy and cultivation is about.

Read along as MC cultivates and surpass the known to the unknown and becomes a legend.

Goal-driven. All I can say about the works of IET is that each Main character he develops has a goal.

Not many has a goal as high as IET's Trilogy (?) (Coiling, Stellar, DE (?))

Anyway, My point is this. If you have not read IET's works yet. Try some. You might find it to your liking. Just keep in mind that this is a road to eternity, so lacking some worldly affairs are understandable, You put yourself in their shoes and understand that as the time goes by, some things are really not that important. <<less

This is a tough one.

The good:

This starts off as a fairly enjoyable read. The protagonist is mostly likable, and the plot surrounding him is fairly interesting. The world canon isn't bad. At least the author made an effort. There are some interesting ideas now & then.

... more>> The Bad:

I should stress that as much as I have many bones to pick with this story, I did enjoy reading it.

Mostly.

That said...

None of the characters are particularly deep, and other than being available or filling their roles as plot points, with a few exceptions most are ignored shortly after their use.

As the story progresses, the quality diminishes. Initially it's quite interesting and at least 3-4 stars- a few chapters maybe even 5- but after the halfway point it drops a star or so as the author starts forcing the plot and dropping significant parts of the plotline. Towards the end, the plot is a meandering mess, with the MC wasting centuries losing focus/chasing side quests, and you realize lots of hinted development will never happen.

More or less another 'everyone else has been trying hard for centuries, but the protag will do it better, faster, etc.' story- this doesn't deliver anything spectacular, though it is supposedly (in a sense) a classic of the genre.

(This pretty much means other authors do the same thing, only better now.)

There are a few problematic points that should be aspects of world tone, but end up being issues of writing style (as they are handled pretty unevenly). For example- the world is _intended_ to be quite competitive, with a lot of strife, oppression & 'dog eat dog' nature being the norm. In actuality, it's pretty much just talked about & rarely seen, except when the author wants to make a point of killing thousands of innocents for effect.

There are a number of very skimpily written 'forced plot' events which seem to be a bit illogical that you'll just have to 'roll with' if you stop & think about them. I wish they were better, but it's not so much a 'dealbreaker' on continuing, though I'll say 'the author was in a slump' & hope the rest gets better...

The main character is generally portrayed as better than he actually is. There's a LOT of 'author preference' in the presentation & plot focus. As mentioned before, many things get casually overlooked/forgotten.

There's a fair amount of 'bragging narrative' in the writing style (common for this genre of Chinese novel), and extolling someone's abilities/potential as being (inconsistently) tenfold, a hundredfold, or a thousandfold, etc. These should be taken as 'a big increase' since the author doesn't really seem to have very solid rules for the world- as the actual results (when they develop) are quite inconsistent (we really won't go into his broken math sense). Actually, there's a LOT of reminders, comparisons, etc- (a good 15-20% of the story) letting you know how awesome a particular thing is or could be in the future (these 'in the future' hints should be taken as speculation, not foreshadowing).

Spoiler

Starting with the fact that the MC starts out as a spell caster- when he later develops his 'fighting ability', the whole 'trained in spell casting for decades' thing gets forgotten except as an occasional 'drive by' mention for the sake of some exposition/comparison. I should stress this isn't simply 'Linley chooses to ignore his own power & any/all benefits'- no, spell casters pretty much stop existing in the world once the author decides fighters are more cool. This is 'explained away' under the pretense that spells simply attempt to replicate elemental powers- but somehow the author completely forgot how powerful 'area of effect' spells were described as being, since in the conflict no one seems to use them anymore and instead combats in small groups or as a mass melee- at least until the end, then it's still just many v 1 or whatever other 'advanced strategies' the author thinks make sense. Point is he's forgotten spell use entirely.

I don't know if the author realizes it or not, but the protag is pretty s*upid, and his careless actions are actually the direct cause for most of the senseless deaths in the story. We won't even get into how the protag later quietly benefits from the deaths of others- somehow not realizing that he's actually _cannibalizing_ others spiritually! I guess it's supposed to be ok since he didn't actually do the killing itself?-- but his mentor was a spirit, and there are gods and (mention of) an afterlife- so him assimilating millions of souls in a process that was originally considered evil...

Go figure.

The author does intentionally make him do other things for the sake of plot, though- so 'being a genius' is all about power, not common sense.

There's a lot of innocents dying pointlessly and no character caring. Sometimes Linley is affiliated with some of them, and though he may have claimed some affection- he always forgets they existed in a crisis situation. He's pretty much a cowardly bully actually- only fighting when cornered or thinks he's at an advantage. He'll literally stand around watching people die instead of using his quite significant powers. No, actually he later abandons people to flee & save his own team, only to have to fight the threat anyway after tons of people literally begging for his aid die (and then he has to fight the threat anyway).

This is one of those 'we don't like white knights' stories, sure- but when the author points out 'a bunch of gods coordinated can kill a highgod', the puts a bunch of gods in Linley's face begging to be led- he can't be bothered with telling them 'ok, all attack at once' (like a 'genius' would), because he's too busy trying to save his own skin. I won't even get into how little risk he would have helping people out of the fog sea when he left- or informing anyone of the difficult (but possible) method of escape- to maybe help others. People trapped for trillions of years? Sucks to be you... Also, in b16c15 he actually intervenes in a restaurant brawl, getting the attacked guy killed- to avoid being bumped into/save his food! he of course (as usual) doesn't give 2 shits about the dead guy. He's come a long way from protecting his brother from the injustice of near-death from random saint battles of long ago- now he causes death with his power directly...

There's also a bunch of dumb 'rules', and some ridiculous plot 'solutions' (the creative use of tunneling to avoid detection by the eyes of a god is one of the more laughable). Actually, there's a LOT of bs spouted to try & direct the plot/fill holes:

"Linley, Highgods have their own pride. If you don't go irritate a Highgod, a Highgod generally won't lower themselves to deal with you."

(said after a highgod straight out slaughtered a bunch of saints, then planned on killing Linley just because he had worshipers...)

In short there's a HUGE amount of exposition, 'speculative misdirection', and flat out 'creative misleading'. The story 'tells' you a LOT of stuff- but what it 'shows' you is often a lot less impressive.

Here's the most BS one which attempts to refute math:

"How much money could shopping possibly use up? 10% off was nothing to them. Given the wealth which Linley and Bebe currently had, a discount of 10% was meaningless.". I doubt you're as math-challenged as the author, but no matter how much you have, only 10 10%'s amount to 'all of it'.

The continual increase in the number of times Linley himself forgets 'the most recent important thing' and acts in a way which completely disregards why they were on 'high alert' & 'happy to be alive' just a while ago... Ugh.

It's kinda irritating actually...

MC is a dumbass.

As I continue to read chapters, watching him 'hide his power' while not doing his job as a fiend... seriously- I don't even know why it's 'cool' to have 'hidden power' if you just use it to save your own skin- especially if it's _obvious_ there's no escape, and you just let people die for effect...

And the enemies are allowed to flee, and bring more troubles so often...

I'm at b16c20 now, and I have no idea what the author is thinking. He's made Linley such a chikensh*t in the face of someone more powerful he's completely planned to abandon a fighting ally and use that as a moment to flee (even though he walked through a but-ton of guards & fortifications on the way in. No way having a powerful ally is useful... (sigh)

b19c13- Linley is in a hurry to help out his ancestors in the netherworld. Not going to go into details, but to get favors from a sovereign he agrees to an unreasonable exchange after barely not being killed by that sovereign for ridiculous & unreasonable bs. Whatever- So now he's got to enter the Planar Wars representing death and kill the opposing commanders (most of whom are more powerful than him). Well, sounds legit- get in, do it, get out- right? Maybe he'll get lucky. Oh- but he finds out literally on the door to go in, that he can't leave till the war is over... in 800 years.

'Sure, no problem' you obviously say because as a reader you forgot he was in a hurry to try & save the spirits of his ancestors before they suffered eternal dispersion or whatever in the Netherworld... but if they have to hold on 8 more centuries while struggling to survive, 'no biggie', right?

So clearly the author forgot his own purpose.

Don't worry- he 'plot armor's everyone Linley wants to rescue- even though the Infernal Realm is supposedly so vicious.

There's other messed up stuff in there-- like the author teasing with 'the guy is literally in the next room' twice while Linley's 'looking' for people- but to say the story degrades as it progresses is an understatement.

Also, at b21c29, the plot both becomes super-predictable (because Linley is a plot-forced idiot), and hard to anticipate. Why 'hard to anticipate'? Because the story will end in 15 chapters, and that should be nowhere near enough to wrap up 'all the things' satisfactorily...

Ugh- the ending... quite predictable except for the s*upidity, melodrama, & grandstanding. We won't even talk about 'jumping the shark'... At least it's over.

Yes, many things were left unresolved...

[collapse]

The Different:

Not much actually. I guess the whole 'ascent to godhood' thing _should_ qualify- but it's really just a matter of colorfully naming a few higher level of power. Sure there's the whole 'faith' thing that's kinda a thing- but it really boils down to power levels since that's quickly abandoned. <<less

Recommended Read. Decent but overall mediocre with a weak ending. At least it's complete, unlike most of the works on NU. Starts off great, but apparently even the author himself lost track of various plot points halfway through, ass pulling ideas that contradict/negate previous points, & completely tosses characters aside, while following his bullet-pointed ideas.

Examples of ass pulls/neglected ideas include:

Spoiler

1) The Warrior & Mage paths. Mage path completely forgotten. Anyone noteworthy is basically a warrior & no mage can become a deity without using the weaker/detrimental path of fusing sparks (All known mages end up fusing sparks, dying, or remaining saints). Which is ret*rded since everyone keeps spouting how Mages of the same level are generally STRONGER than the same level warrior..... then Deities happen and no mage exist up there because everyone realizes how useless they are.... thus began the Xianxia phase. Author tries to have that hidden village bring some face back to mages.... except that fails once you realize the prime example mage who spars MC got wrecked & lost his pet in the Tomb of the Gods.... only for MC to beat the same Tomb by relying on his warrior might in the dumbest way. (The whole point of mages is that they're better at fighting large groups, MC is swamped by large groups, realizes he can't spam forbidden spells fast enough so his warrior side gets strong enough to..... somehow slash through his enemies faster than his forbidden spells can kill them.

2) MC cast: Basically it's just Linley. (Even Bebe and Wharton become side characters)

Everyone else only have three things to do:

A) To sit around and gasp/cheer in amazement every time MC makes a breakthrough.

B) To get into some trouble to give the MC a reason to go somewhere & hamfistedly save the day. Rinse and repeat.

C) To trick the MC into some trouble which just ends up powering up the MC.

2) Magic/Spells: Apparently nobody realizes that spells are just simplified versions of "profound mysteries." For gods sake, like a dozen spells have the same effect & name as profound mystery. "Super gravity field" "Absolute zero" "Dimensional slash" "That Golem everyone forgets" etc.... how did nobody make the connections? Profound mysteries seem like they're ridiculously easy to grasp based on the spells. Just study the damn spells & save yourself a few thousand years. It takes the MC nearly 800 chapters to figure this out even though he had a hint of it when developing his cutting wind power in the Tomb hundreds of chapters earlier. No wonder only the MC and a few others master more than 1-2 diety clones.

3) The sparks/power levels/power creep: The whole buildup about Highgod MC being able to sense that "deeper layer of sovereign might" was completely discarded since MC went ahead and fused with sovereign sparks. Wtf, he had no trouble going deeper and deeper with his own understanding all the way to highlord status, why is there a vague/inexplicable blockade in going from natural Highgod to Sovereign? Even worse, they explicitly state that the sovereign sparks don't have any profound mystery so one can instantly fuse it..... except right afterwards MC starts receiving massive amounts of profound mystery anyways..... from where? Why?

Author gives half-baked reason why it's so bad to fuse sparks. Wouldn't fusing make you understand profound mysteries faster? Gives an excuse about "trees growing crooked". Pift, knowledge is knowledge. Would've made more sense if doing so made you go slightly insane or caused something which cripples your potential. (But I guess that wouldn't be good for MC's wife).

4) Fate Power: Likewise, completely glossed over then converted into basically the same thing as "soul power". Trumped up as some sort of healing essence & may have slight manipulative powers. Fine, it gives a reason why some people might want to harvest soul power (And also why a reason for the radiant/light sect to be as douchy as they are.) But turns out nobody really needs to actively harvest them to begin with.... But then later is only good for boosting comprehension like soul power does. Could've been used to explain Sovereign Light's healing factor (& therefore motivation in harvesting so much fate power & souls) but nah..... it's just a technique which allows him to do that. Wut?

5) The planes: 4 higher planes and 7 smaller planes! Yeah, most of them aren't even seen. Even when Cesar's wuv goes to the Life plane nobody goes there. The only important planes are the infernal plane, netherplane, & the MC's dinky material plane.

6) MC's naivety/growing s*upidity: Even after thousands of years, MC never figures out that he could solve most of his problems by..... asking a question or two & instead takes things at face value (Like his Mom situation, wtf whatshisface is clearly evil could've just asked another neutral sovereign for advice. Sovereign Fate doesn't count, he clearly wanted your blood collection). First explained away as MC having a lie detector (via spiritual sense) but that stops working in the higher realms. Then explained handwaved away by Bebe's animal instincts. Except Bebe stops helping out in that way..... Basically ends up making everything seem like MC is Forest Gump & just stumbling into massive amounts of luck/fortune where his opponents plots all just serve to power him up.

8) Derp Mcguffins/Equipment: Worst offender: the Coiling Dragon ring that just keeps getting stronger and stronger. Keep in mind it's "only" a sovereign artifact yet no other sovereign artifact has such a medley of ridiculous powers. It can store souls (Grandpa Doehring), increase magic efficiency (only costs 1/6 the cost), magical storage/lifesupport system (blood drops & sovereign mights that auto heal/activate near death), can defend against soul attacks, and can even easily consume souls..... how did such a "lower" sovereign even craft two of these broken artifact and die with them?

Second worst offender: The magi-cannon. Apparently as strong as a rank 8 magus. Came out of nowhere right after the MC just happens to find the biggest mine of elemental crystals, only one to use it just happens to be the MC. Supposedly the Radiant church had some but they were swamped before they could use it.... supposedly... Wut. Surprise, surprise there are no mages involved in the mook wars at all, just knights and magi-cannons. (Refer to point #1)

9) The antagonists: Many of them aren't even a threat or introduced then resolved in a silly way. Such as the Clayde & his brother, the radiant church dudes, sovereigns, etc. Most of them are only a threat because the MC is such a moron and decides to pull a Leeroy Jenkins while the heavens lines everything up for him. For example: Going after the church without knowing.... basically any combat skills and only relying on his dragonform causing Grandpa to die. Like holy crap, you do realize you're primarily a mage, right? Only needed to wait like 5 years and you could've steamrolled the king & his brother on your own? Hell, even a dead saint nearly killed them off yet MC was rekt by them. Or that purgatory commander guy that rekt MC & tried to soulseed MC but stopped just because he uses Gem-Gem's technique. Really? You couldn't make a simple divine sense phone call? MC s*upidity should've ended the story right there. And the sovereign fruit snake/tree. Good think Bebe unknowingly just straight up mu*dered the snake so MC didn't accidentally become an emissary. Derp. Then there's the big bads (Sovereign light & fate) MC just happens to hire a Balu emissary which lets him know all about the big bad. Wut.

It was a pretty good Western Fantasy and then when you reach higher realm levels.

Things become sorta less thrilling but nonetheless still very entertaining depending on how you take upon it when reading.

I enjoyed the world-building, powerups, and the fights were very good too.

CD might not be one of my first xianxia but it's one of the novels that made me read it not only during my free time but as far as time can give me. :P It has an MC who is devoted to one girl and is dedicated to training. The side characters also doesn't irritate me to the point to want to skip the conversations.

As for other details, well just scroll down and check other reviews which give more details about it. ^_^ But I'll recommend it. For the... more>> ending, I would rate it at 4/5 because I felt that something is missing to complete it. <<less

I enjoyed it. It was a long ride, but somehow, I’m glad that its over. Though the ending was rushed.

The plot was decent, just did not have much to do with the coiling dragon ring, or coiling dragons for that matter. A lot of sh*t that seemed important was tossed aside.
Spoiler

For an instance, at the beginning the skills of the mages were described so greatly, I thought for sure Linley would use some awesome skills like the world protector, but in the end, none of that happened.

[collapse]

Other than that, the story is great, the protagonist had a small personality, as said below, he is not ruthless, not that kind, just a little less than most Xianxia protagonists, which worked well for the story I guess.

I liked most of the concepts such as the world of deities, embodiments of the edicts and laws, the cultivation tree which, surprisingly:

Spoiler

He did not become an Overgod and a new concept was introduced to a rushed ending; he became more than the edicts itself.

Another glaring flaw was the surprising lack of anecdotes. His romance was also like this, we basically had a very vague idea of the conversations that took place between Linley and the heroines, it was fine at the beginning though. This may also be due to the excessive amounts of time skips.

Spoiler

Linley had children, but we hardly got to see Linley, as a father, interact with them. Before we knew it, Linley’s children grew up to be boxes or exceedingly bulky men, the time skips went for Bebe’s child as well, whom they were there for (why was that part skipped). Same went for his little brother, male characters in general seems to be very bulky. I’m surprised the children did not resent him for not being there most of the time; ten years time he cultivates.

[collapse]

I guess this one really tried to display the relations of fraternity, but somehow, it just doesn’t seem satisfactory, like they weren’t depicted that intimately compared to Japanese novels. Chinese novels are better off going for Harems instead of fraternity or kinship.

Despite the glaring flaws and the axed ending, which also ended without any anecdotes, or much narratives, This was very cool.

To start, I am heartbroken to see the end to the novel... The journey was definitely long, but worth it. The character development is excellent, and you can really see Linley grow as a person. Overall, the story was beautifully weaved and the length of the novel made me more unwilling to part with the story and the characters. I can only lay here on my bed, next to my bucket of tears and tissues as I bid farewell to the best novel I have ever read in my life.
