He Chuan Zhou had the same dream again. In that dream, a youngster would stand in front of everyone’s questioning and doubts and say with a high-spirited yet arrogant voice: “I will become a policeman!”

She felt that this freak was lame, unlike herself, who just wanted to make money.

Fifteen years have passed, and everything that was supposed to grow had grown.

When they reunited after a long time, he was sitting in the car, a glass window separating them, wearing a suit and leather shoes, holding an unlit cigarette in his mouth, as if gritting his teeth, but his eyes slightly glanced outside, speaking arrogantly and provocatively: “Hey, Captain He.”

The so-called fate tricks people probably means that even though I have not changed my original intention, I still embarked on a completely different path from my dream.

Seeing as how it is still being translated it is not a true 5/5, but it is definitely above a 4. I am still waiting for this story to unfold to see where it goes, but I can see that this novel has a lot of potential. There's a lot of foreshadowing happening, and we are slowly peeling back what happened to the female lead.

This criminal investigative novel features a female lead, captain of the Major Crimes Squad, and she is the cold and aloof one this time. The male... more>> lead is the one who persists in pursuing her. Their lives intertwined by chance, yet bound by a deeper understanding of the scars they carried. So far, it is exceptionally well-written, delving deeply into the complexities of human nature. I love how the writing is deeply evocative. The translation is also superb. Be warned, though: this novel is quite bitter and tackles many heavy topics, so trigger warnings apply.

The characters, etched with the scars of their pasts, navigate a world filled with both beauty and desolation. Their stories, woven with threads of suffering and resilience, create a profoundly moving and unforgettable narrative.

I understand why this novel is aptly named Crossroads. The choices each person makes in life determine the direction of their path. There is right and wrong, and sometimes a single decision can ripple through the rest of their life, often irreversibly. Yet, in moments of doubt and misdirection, may we encounter kindred spirits who guide us back to our true path. Life endures, whether bathed in light or shadow, and even the darkest shadows cast by sunlight become part of its radiant tapestry. <<less

One of my favorite detective novels largely for the raw emotion and brutal reality its cases demonstrates in life. Highly recommend.

Our FMC, a policewoman, is led down a series of engrossing cases tied to her past, and we follow along as more and more about her history is revealed. Past plays a big part in this book, and the authors prose only adds to the amount of emotion and sadness you'll feel. And really, I love the past that the author painted for her--and just how real it feels. We... more>> see our MC's childhood, the effect her father's death has on her, and how all these elements of her life led her down this path. It's just wonderfully written.

I feel the need to bring attention to the cases themselves. They deal with brutal reality. There is no guranteed "happy ending" for those who have worked their whole lives for it. Some people (read: MC's childhood friends you'll learn about as you go on, victims, etc.) come from terrible families with terrible options, and it really breaks your heart to see the harsh reality of it all. Of ab*se, of negelct, of victim blaming, of young women and men failed by society, and the young kids who barely even could understand anything, caught between it all. I love the way author drops hints, then reveals of the truth behind their backstories, and I love the emotion she infuses throughout all of them. It's raw, it's real, and you can *see* how their environments growing up directly led to their personalities and approaches to problems within the plot.

A very well developed read, filled with layered characters, fascinating pasts, and emotional writing. Detective cases are engrossing and directly build upon the plot and each character. 11/10 highly recommend. But I'll also remind that the romance here was very down-low. There is a greater focus on the plotline and each characters' pasts and romance is more of a sub plot. I didn't care personally, but just a notice. <<less
