Zan Ying was born to be the Crown Prince’s promised princess consort, designated by her father’s will. She grew up in the palace, beautiful and well-behaved, and she relied completely on the Crown Prince, believing he was her lifelong destiny.

Until at her coming-of-age banquet, she discovered that the Crown Prince had always harbored a hidden love for someone else. Her trusted elder brother turned out to be the real brother of this hidden love, and her respected grandmother and uncle, who was a prime minister, all advised her to be magnanimous:

“After all, the girl’s father sacrificed himself for the country, and she is the daughter of a meritorious official…”

Even the emperor and empress, who had always treated her like their own daughter, mocked her for being petty:

“You will be the Crown Princess in the future, and she will only be a concubine at most. How can you not understand the bigger picture?”

Even when both were trapped in a fire, with the emperor and empress caring about the Crown Prince, the Crown Prince caring about the hidden love, and the elder brother caring about his sister, no one remembered that Zan Ying was still trapped under the collapsed beams.

Given a second chance, Zan Ying finally understood that those she thought were closest to her were only near her for the sake of the immense fortune her mother had left behind.

In her first act of rebellion, she stood alone, trembling, and publicly announced her desire to break off the engagement with the Crown Prince.

Initially, the Crown Prince thought she was just throwing a tantrum and would eventually come back to apologize. But while waiting, he saw the once-imposing Grand Marshal humbly helping the young girl with her muddy skirt. At that moment, the Crown Prince was consumed by jealousy.

A whole palace was left vacant. The once-familiar pastries, soups, and greetings were no more, and the emperor and empress began to feel disoriented.

Then came the elder brother, the prime minister, the previous and current dynasties, and the inner palace…

The first half of this story focused more on MC's journey to take revenge on the people who wronged her in the past while another half was about MC and ML's journey to conquer the world.

In the beginning of the story, MC didn't suddenly become adept at scheming after her rebirth. Her attempt to take revenge even felt clumsy at first but she gradually got better after consulting with ML and her aides. Later, she could make her own judgment without other's influence but she still diligently listened to her... more>> aide's suggestion for additional insight.

ML was very devoted to MC. He always supported ber unconditionally and didn't try to influence her decision. He let her do what she wanted and he would hold the sky for her.

Their relationship also progressed naturally. They came from being a not-related-by- blood relative to lover who loved each other deeply. There was no misunderstanding between them even when ML deliberately tried to push MC away.

Spoiler

He was poisoned and it's unknown whether he could survive or not so he didn't want to give her any hope. MC didn't understand at first but after she knew his condition, she tried to accommodate his feeling and concern. She still unwaveringly chose to be with him though but she gave him time to accept her wholeheartedly against all odds.

I also love the ending.

Spoiler

ML knew that MC was very capable on her own so he didn't try to undermine her by giving her a mere empress title. They decided to be co-ruler and both of them could participate in the court.

To read this, you have to suspend disbelief. Yet even with the simplistic world view, the tragic fate of MC and sinister plots behind it evoked some deep ugly emotions. I tried to condense this into a rational review, but this eventually became a record of my thoughts as I read really absurd or insidious plot points.

World setting: Weak emperor vs strong nobles, dissolute wealthy nobles vs suffering taxed commoners, noble civil servants vs downtrodden soldiers who protect them.

The premise itself is problematic. Regardless of how precarious the imperial power... more>> is or how important MC is, it truly can't be that easy to break off an imperial engagement. For such a scheming royal family, they left so many loopholes for MC to exploit.

I hold great disdain for the Fu family and all noble families. Everyone knew that the imperial engagement was a conspiracy targeting MC's wealth. Yet somehow, they are shocked that MC didn't live well and wasn't educated in the palace. What future crown princess would be isolated from the nobility she would govern?

  • It was so absurd that the Fu family had 2 officials in court but

They got so complacent that they forgot they needed MC to retain their glory.
The further I read, the greater my disgust for hypocritical characters like the crown prince and Fu Ze'an. Wilfully ignorant, self righteous and delusional. The kind of snakes that needed MC, wealth & power but acted like it was all beneath them.

  • Spoiler

In childhood, Crown prince was wilfully negligent as the emperor was. Even after the crown prince recovered his past memories, he chose to remain ignorant to his mum's evil. Even after it was exposed, he was unwilling to punish her despite his "regret". Bile rose up my throat.

  • Everytime I thought to pity Fu Ze'an, I immediately remembered that he never repented in past life until he was forced to face his wrongs in this life. Just wilfully ignorant and delusional.
  • Frankly speaking, the author is great at dishing out punishment suitable for each person.
The Queen's torture & death was as gory as the

in Malicious Empress of Military Lineage. You understand the revenge but it's still a deeply dark act.

The internal atrocities committed by the officials are honestly much worse than those committed by the enemies.

  • Spoiler

The true horror of all wars is being abandoned by your own people not enemies. E.g. Soldiers raping their own people, enslaving refugees

It was truly beautiful to see MC's growth. Truly a miracle that the ML survived the whole novel on sheer willpower. And it was a little cathartic to see their mutual respect and love in the end. <<less
