The more I read the less I enjoyed it. It tries to be a chill somewhat comedic novel with his companion being a spirit beast and him primarily farming, but it feels like the author kept getting bored of that concept and throwing fights he can barely win over and over again. It’s honestly ridiculous how many betrayals happen constantly, they may as well all just be demonic cultivators. It’s a wonder anyone makes it past 10 years old.

The characters apart from his pet are also not enjoyable. Apart from... more>> the handful of non-traitors, the characters he becomes friends with basically don’t matter to the story and over time have been showing up less and less, even further decreasing their importance. His system’s also incredibly unsatisfying and makes the cultivation techniques make zero sense. Some cultivation techniques raise his level and some don’t, but even the ones that are supposed to raise his realm barely do anything.
Spoiler

He’ll spend like a hundred thousand years of system time mastering his techniques and be at the middle level of the first realm of qi condensation despite the only known one who reached a decent level of the technique being late foundation establishment. That person didn’t even have it mastered nearly to the level the MC did. Also around ch 70-80 he decides to cultivate and master a technique that requires him to stay a virg*n but makes him extra h**ny.

I'm still giving it a 5 despite being a little repetitive -

Spoiler

MC keeps finding out about groups of wandering cultivators going to a secret realm. The MC loads up on hidden cards fearing betrayal, and of course it happens... and he kills them all in self defense. Well really he usually just kills who ever is left after they turn on each other after using each other to get to whatever treasure. Not that I mind as he really is cautious (for a cultivation story at least). It just feels a little silly that EVERYONE is a s*um bag.

[collapse]

That said this is a much more chill cultivation story than most, and while it's tagged fast cultivation... that's only fair to say within his rather small sect. But this MC is truly low-key and is in no rush. He never starts anything himself, and only goes out when he needs some resources. With only really one exception he gets along with pretty much everyone in his sect, and has a few good friends.

Spoiler

The Sect leader seems to have been spying on him with some mirror/artifact so she knows some of his secrets. Which explains why she begins to favor him subtlety over time. Though she probably doesn't understand the how of his powers, she's become a backer allowing him to do what he wants.

There almost certainly will be no romance in this story though. One shopkeeper has hit on him multiple times and he deflects it. One of his sisters from the sect literally asked to be his dao companion and he talked her into agreeing that romance was just a huge landmine in cultivation. Which was actually kinda funny how far he took it. Worrying about how his great-grand children might offend some bigshot, etc. Oh, and the grandma of the girl he is raising greenlit him taking her as a wife but he refused that. His best bro got betrayed by his companion... so yeah. The author has given plenty of examples of why our MC isn't going to fall in love.

But then originally the MC never wanted to go outside the sect too. Not until he really started to get some strength and realized he'd need resources that his little sect could never offer him. So it's not impossible this is all a bunch of red herring on the romance. Maybe the twist will be that he finds his soulmate that is just as cautious as him? Then they'll work together to rob.. I mean defend themselves from rogue cultivators.

Well written, well paced. Fast foodish type novel with system but it stands above most other fast food novels. System isn't too broken. Some light comedy, and some emotional moments. Above all, it's a finished novel with a decent ending. Would read again in a heartbeat.

The title feels pretty misleading, as it implies fast power progression and the perks that come with it, but so far it feels slow, everybody in other sects is bloodthirsty or a snake, and the humour has either totally died or gone stale.

Basically, I second every point in The_Follower’s review. Its a mid to mediocre webnovel whose only silver lining is Old Deer.

TL is decent, BOTI’s system hasn’t made any jarring translation errors or inconsistencies seen in some other mtl novels

The_Follower is right on all points.

However, I think they were a bit too harsh with the 2★ rating, probably because they were extremely disappointed with the book. I’d rate it closer to 3★.

The useless techniques being practiced for hundreds of thousands of years are tolerable. But when every action the MC takes leads to betrayal or trouble—it just gets too frustrating.
