Chu Yuanying dared to swear that as a former savior, he never thought that one day he would transform into a magical girl and participate in an idol talent show, for such a silly reason like leaving a small fortune to his daughter after his death.

But it’s okay, as long as it’s not discovered, he can pretend it never happened! But who can tell him why his well-behaved daughter also joined the talent show?

The middle-aged office worker couldn’t help but feel incredibly devastated when he saw his daughter calling herself his sister and saying, “I’m your fan!”

This is actually quite interesting.

The synopsis mentions that MC is a former savior, I can't tell if this is a fan-fiction of some franchise but MC is like Otto Apocalypse from Honkai Impact, guy fought in a world where there were disasters constantly and took the final stand to create a different timeline (?) where those disasters didn't exist. Not sure how he has a daughter since his lover died in the previous timeline for everything to work out and she doesn't seem to appear in the new timeline (she... more>> had a gravestone, I think, but no name on it). <<less

For some reason... I have a feeling this novel is heavily based on debut or die + blue lock (or maybe I'm just a delulu moondae fangirl lolol).

anyways, the setting is an idol competition with blue lock stakes. unlike DoD, the MC won't die if s/he doesn't debut, and is quite reluctant.

There are rankings ranging from A-F, and ... more>>
Spoiler

like isagi, MC is the first one to enter after learning she can't be an idol if she fails (unlike isagi it's cause she don't care).

Now let's get onto why I think this novel takes a lot from DoD (apart from the idol comp setting which is kind of a stretch tbh) are the characters. Like, maybe not directly copy-paste, but most certainly paraphrased.

Spoiler

First obvious character, is charismatic, made to be an idol, red haired beauty, Cha Eugene Chen Yining.

Next extremely obvious character, delinquent looking, known Eugene Yining for a long time, sharp composer/ choreographer beauty, Kim Raebin Ji Shuzhu.

Lastly for obvious DoD characters so far, dropout child actor, wanting to restart an entertainment career, daddy issues, low self esteem beauty, Bae Sejin Tang Liuli.

This one might be a bit out there, but...

Sis-con, inferiority complex, genius beauty, Rin Itoshi Xie Qingxuan.

(I can't believe they put my baby Eugene below Itoshi but I guess it makes sense...)

[collapse]

The other characters may share some common traits, but unlike the ones above, I cannot directly pin them to any one character (unless it's blue lock cause I stopped reading it for a bit).

MC is a bit of a perv imo, cause he knows the contestants are his daughter's age and yet still lowkey leers at them (just my opinion it's kinda just shyness BUT WHY YOU BLUSHIN). lmao I'm kidding it's just so that it's easier to insert yuri elements.

his daughter...
Spoiler

quite stereotypical gap moe of being cold when he's her dad but cute and attached when she's an idol. I guess they'll mend the relationship one day.

is a Japanese idol who came to participate in China's division. I guess the author wanted to add some Japanese hate in the novel, not in the way where 'oh this Japanese girl sucks', but more 'haha, those people in Japan couldn't realise her beauty so she ran to us'.

Tbh, even though this novel feels like a hodgepodge of elements the author found interesting and blended coarsely together, it's still entertaining as the elements themselves are gems.

Read Debut or Die as it feels like a more refined version of whatever the author was going for. This novel is still good to read to pass time. <<less

So far this is an amazing work, the background and lore, overall storyline and plot, is well done and intriguing. The main character's actions and motivations make sense, 2 or 3 things are a bit railroaded, but aside from that everything has a clear reason behind it. Most importantly, the other characters aren't one dimensional; the common folly with harems is that the characters just follow a template, and you don't really get attached to them. In this story, the other characters have clear backstories and multi-faceted personalities, which really... more>> helps the story. Another common issue with harems is that it usually makes no sense as to why the other characters like/are obsessed with the MC, where common kindness or cruelty is somehow extremely charming. In this story, the appeal and charm of the MC makes sense, and it's understandable why they shine so brightly.

If you're worried about in*est, to the point I've reached, there's basically no chance of it. Unlike everyone else, the daughter has pure feelings of the MC being a motherly figure, and the MC is a devoted parent. Even the harem that sees most people close to the MC as a rival, the daughter is ignored, due to the sheer aura of a parent-daughter relationship that oozes from their interactions.

There are a few issues in my opinion, although they don't detract from the overall quality of the story. In typical gender-bender fashion, there are long drawn out descriptions of the beauty and features of the MC, repeatedly throughout the story. However, it still mainly focuses on the story and my main gripes with the gender bender genre's tropes aren't present. There's also a hint of Japan (Island country) hate, but it's not often brought up, and it's not extreme racism like in a lot of other Chinese/Korean works, it's more of a dunk on the country than the people.

You can really feel the passion that the characters have for idols and the knowledge that the author has on dances and idol activities. The main events of the story are interesting, well-written, tell you more about the characters, and build on the plot. Nothing that happens in the main plot is really useless, it's often set-up or to deepen feelings, which is a hard feature to find with webnovels. Highly recommend.

Real, true, without a doubt, will happen, theory:

First off, this novel is EXTREMELY slow-paced.

I'm usually fine with slow-paced novels, but this one was exceedingly hard to get through as there are too many characters introduced way too soon. These character introductions can take up an entire chapter and ruins the flow of the story.

As of writing, there is 66 chapters released and I dread reading any more about the backstory and motivations of a character we have barely been introduced to.

While the dynamic between the MC and their daughter is very cute, there's not enough substance for... more>> me to continue reading.

Because of this, I recommend waiting until the chapters pile up before starting this novel. The side character introductions are mostly skippable as they don't seem to affect the story as of right now.

Tldr; This story isn't for me. There's a lot of media out in the world that do a better job in portraying the theme of the GB idols. The parent-child dynamic was the most interesting part of this novel, but it was barely there and wasn't enough too hook me. <<less
