In a world torn by chaos, a modern-day food blogger unexpectedly finds herself transported into the past. By a twist of fate, she ends up in a remote mountain village, only to become the fiancée of a penniless barbarian named Shen Qing.

Everyone urges her to marry someone else, but Xiao Wanling doesn’t even spare them a glance.

Poor?

She’s got two hands, two feet, and the whole mountain behind her. This is practically her field of expertise!

So, she opens a teahouse to earn some cash—and while she’s at it, she treats the villagers to a series of mouthwatering culinary shocks.

From “immortal tofu” and “white jade tofu” that spark a fiery debate over sweet vs. savory,

To herbal jelly with fruit, sour plum soup, and ice powder soup that are not only tasty but also help soothe coughs and fill bellies.

She even made popcorn out of wild grasses, completely winning over the hearts (and stomachs) of the local children!

Her humble bamboo stall grows into a wooden hut and then into a trio of blue-brick teahouses—the Xiao Family Teahouse quickly becomes famous across the surrounding ten villages.

Just as she’s riding high, her so-called estranged parents, who once looked down on her, come crawling back, playing the long-lost family card.

Get lost! All of you!

No one’s going to block her path to success!

Shen Qing (pitiful puppy eyes):

“Wife, they’re bad—I’m good! Anyone who tries to steal you from me gets kicked out!”

I could barely get through the first 2 chapters because it's just so badly written. The plot is all over the place, everything happens just randomly, and nothing makes sense. I read the original chapter and the translated chapter and it's not the translator's fault, it's just very poorly written by the author. I don't recommend reading this at all. It's like the author is stingy with their words and can barely spend 2 seconds to describe a character. Just read the first chapter and you can tell whether you... more>> will like it or not. I didn't really want to write a review but I'm really tired of reading stories like these where there's no character description or development, no story building, and it's like the author is just writing to mash overused plots together as fast as possible.

Spoiler

The story starts with a famine and original MC dying due to hunger so current MC, who's a food blogger, transmigrate. She gets sold by her parents and is transported for a few days into a courtyard. All the reader knows is she was sold but we don't know if it's sold into a brothel or sold to a wealthy family to engage in prostitution. There is no description of the setting, just a lot of dialogue between random characters to let us know there are 5 girls, including MC, who were sold and now have to be sent to some lord's place later. MC's thinking, maybe she can cook some delicious dishes and try to negotiate some terms but nope, she just gets taken to a room and assaulted by the lord. She whacks his head with an object and gets tied up and thrown in a woodshed. Also in the woodshed is another girl who is only known as the "blue-clothed girl" who has been defiant from the very beginning. They escape through a dog-hole but how did they know there was a dog-hole there? This was apparently the first time they've been sent to this lord's place but they randomly were able to escape and even set fire to the place. Like, it's so illogical it's silly. And then they get chased by the lord's servants and, unable to escape, the blue-clothed girl grabbed MC's hand and jump off a cliff with her.

Blue-clothed girl dies but before dying, manages to give MC her belongings saying she doesn't want her enemies to get them and for MC to find someone named Shen Qing. MC also learns that the girl's name is the same as hers in her past life. Now, this is confusing because if the blue-clothed girl's name is Xiao Wanling then that means the body MC is using is not named Xiao Wanling? Or are they both named Xiao Wanling? Or am I mis-translating something here? Cause later MC uses the dead girl's name and someone calls her Ms. Xiao so MC's now using Xiao Wanling as her name which is actually her original name??? Regardless, MC's like, I need to find Shen Qing even though she knows nothing about him and where he is. The author just said, blue-clothed girl had no time to explain to MC except for those few words but MC automatically assumes SQ must live in the forest so she goes into the forest to look for him. And bam, she finds him. Ok, this is also so illogical because if I remember correctly, all the girls were taken away in a cart in the beginning and it took them several days of traveling. Yet, MC escapes from the lord's place, jumps off a cliff, survives, is able to move right away, goes into the forest near her, and can find this SQ when she doesn't even know what he looks like. At this point, my head hurts so much I could barely finish reading chapter 1 and yes, this all happened in chapter 1.

Chapter 2 is just as bad, starting with MC asking ML, are you Brother Shen? And bam, yes, he is. A random guy she finds in the forest is the Shen Qing she was looking for. And she just decides to continue to make him misunderstand that she was the blue-clothed girl who died and is now his fiancée even though the original blue-clothed girl never said he was her fiancé but she just assumed he was. She's taken back to his village where random villagers look at her curiously but some village girl hates how pretty she is and just because MC talks back to her, now the petty village girl hates MC and later had her family steal ML's money and valuables from his house. Then ML takes MC to the village head and asks them to help MC with her identity documents and bam, identity solved. The MC goes home with ML and I guess she's decided to go ahead and marry him without telling him that his original fiancée actually is dead. So they start living together and they don't even try to get their stolen money or things back. Like seriously? ML lost so much money that he was saving to avoid being drafted by the military and they just decided to let it go?? Not even try to ask people or try to find out who is using their stolen items?? All MC is thinking is, I gotta make money soon to make up for it. Like, omg it's just so unrealistic I just cannot. Even if you can't find the thief, you at least need to tell the village head or someone in charge that someone broke into your house. Just the author's nonchalant way of saying, oh everything will be ok because MC has cooking skills and sooner or later will make money so it's ok to be stepped on by everyone in the beginning and have no backbone. Ok, I just cannot so this is getting dropped. And don't even get me started on ML's inner monologue of making himself misunderstand that MC doesn't want to live a hard life with him. Like, dude, you barely know this girl but you did save her life, she is your fiancée (even if mistakenly) and she followed you back so at least ask her if she wants to be with you if you're so worried. But no, he didn't ask her, she just went with him to his house, didn't object to the marriage, and even slept in the same bed as him, and the next day he's thinking, oh no, she probably left me just because he woke up and didn't see her. Like, where would some weak girl who needed saving from some bad guys go to?? If she had a better choice why would she need you to save her in the beginning??? I just can't, these two main characters are just written too dumbly for me.

Even if the story is meant to be focus on food, if you cannot write a good and likable/believable MC/ML/supporting cast, then it's not worth it for readers to continue reading. The novel isn't that long, only about 60-ish chapters but I can't even get through the 2nd chapter because of the poor writing and uninteresting plot/characters.
