The whole novel is an emotional f*ck you and a mental f*ck you.

I am still in the beginning of it, and I can just say that the MC is so. Likable unlikeable. The Author did a great notion of writing the mc's experiences because he is insane, of course not in the mad level of Fang Yuan he still has humanity, but it's so obvious that he is not right.

I had to take breaks reading it wondering if I was even going insane because what is even real and what... more>> is false, also I think the romance while bit bumpy fit best with the MC. The f*cker does not know what is real or what is false the girl might have been a genuine person but as more and more sh*t happens and (clearly) the more mental the MC becomes the girls existence becomes less, so it's like we are seeing a person being reduce to nothing but she is. Tho these chapters are having my jaw dropped.

They are still good chapters wish they maybe had decreased it as it does become time consuming to read all. But the author does have engaging moments. Which is a thumbs up.

But as a person who clearly is not mentally well I will had to take many breaks from reading this for my own mental health, but if your mentally ok and strong try it. It's good. <<less

MC is not evil. I am not sure about romance. But he care for people, save people left and right, Get betrayed and still laugh like idiot and repeat and repeat and repeat, over and over, same mistake, and still same happy kind being.

I don't know from what angle he can be evil.

Check chp 711 - gratitude / You will notice, if even in 700+ chp he is not evil.

Then evil tag is misplaced.

Complete waste of time.

This is a super unique concept (at least to my knowledge) and so far I am loving it, it really feels like a villains origin story. Without getting into specifics ill just list some basic thoughts I have.

    • Awesome concept
    • Worldbuilding in progress so cant judge
    • Translation is okay, some problems, but no legibility problems and if you are used to it then you might not even notice.
    • Plot is definitely intriguing, yet I sincerely hope there is more worldbuilding/atmosphere building but its verrry early so can't fault them for that yet.
I'll write down more of my thoughts later on after it gets much farther on in chapters or I decide to stop reading and I'll say why.

the novel starts very well, having a very fresh concept, but the more chapters you read the more the MC becomes extremely unbearable, although I understand that the MC has his own reasons for being that way and I know that the author wants to make the mystery last as much as possible, but it's still very tiring to read more than 100 chapters about a madman who is always being deceived by someone, even more so when the author tries to use his madness as an excuse to constantly... more>> change the MC's personality (the problem is that the personality it only changes when it is convenient for the plot, literally in a matter of one chapter to the next), I will continue reading because I don't like to leave a story in the middle but at this point for me it becomes a little torture to continue

You have to know this is the most popular webnovel of male-demographic category in 2022 (in China). Even Squid (LoTM writer) recommend it.

I think it's not weird. Just read the summary! The idea are very interesting and author has skill to realize it. The transition between being crazy and not crazy is very smooth! It blew my mind away

His writing style is so immersive that readers will go crazy together with the protagonist. A lot of readers couldn't continue reading and need to take a break because their detoriating mentality. Including me. And it generally believed by readers that the author must be a mental patient at some points too. This is not a book for the faint heart or the weak stomach. You might feel fine for 100-200 chapters, but it might not be the case later.

Another reason why this is popular is because it used inspiration from Cthulhu and combine it seamlessly with Chinese fantasy.

Cthulhu is still considered a niche theme in chinese webnovel market (which is dominated by xianxia). It has been popularized thanks to Squid. After Lord of Mystery, there were a lot of books which were inspired to use Cthulhu theme too, however there weren't always successful ofc, and this book is one of the successful one.

However don't be mistaken, don't compare the two books. They took the approach differently. However if I must to say it, ofc Lord of the Mystery is still the best.

However although it's said and tagged as Cthulhu-themed, don't come here if you only want that, this won't satisfy you. It's a bit of inspiration and not a fanfic of it.

World building, immersive writing, forshadowing, plot twist, clear & understandable fighting scenes, some niche and fresh idea, I would give them all 5

Alright I am lied. For plot twist I would give it 10000

However this story still has quite a lot of weakness and stuff that can be enough to make you stop reading if that's your bottom line.

Excusable at first because of his mental illness and bad experience. However if you noticed every details of his interaction with his followers and some of his thoughts about others, you might began to think that even if he didn't have illness, he might be still very much unlikeable anyway.

What make me curious is who said that Li Huowang is evil?? It's very weird to read this book expecting him to be like Fang Yuan (Reverend Insanity) . He's cruel to others and cruel to himself. He was very self-centered and self-serving, however he would still help those in need and felt disguted towards evilness. He still retain some humanity and some sense as someone from modern era (which is one of the main reason why he's different from other people around him). He also can have emotional connection towards another human being. Although writer isn't very good at writing that.

Should we blame author or Li Huowang? The supposed heroine is a very traditional "virtuous wife" who even will help him take off his shoes and shocks. She could fight and not a pushover. However it's still uncomfortable to read that scenes for me who is a modern woman with more modern mindset. Do some guys really like this type? That make me uncomfortable.

It's not the worse of it, there's really bumpy road where author had a rough time continuing the story with the heroine after a major event. Basically, he probably gave up and just let her exists without presence.

    • The side characters (mostly his juniors aka followers) aren't written well except some of them. If you're really picky, you might have many complains.
    • Almost no break, fight after fight or trouble after trouble.
    • not all small plot are fresh, many are repeatable and can be considered mainstream
The saving grace are, if you see the forest than the trees, then these weakness can be considered just a few insignificant trees. People don't read this for romance or side characters or even LHW's personality.

You have to read it if you want

    • a niche and mysterious world
    • similarly mysterious and twisted plot
    • a range of gore, torture method, a new way of suffering
    • edgy character
    • experience the feeling of a syzhophernic person
    • seeing how much LHW can suffer
Honestly speaking I haven't finished the story but I have read reviews in source language and got spoiler hard haha. Still, I know that I will read and follow this story to the end just to see LHW suffering.

This is "Lord of Mysteries, " but with an upgrade in character development and the depth of the plot. If you're familiar with "Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, " you'll find many similarities here, giving you goosebumps chapter after chapter. It's so captivating that you can't help but keep reading.

Looking at other negative reviews, you'll notice they mostly come from readers seeking the quick gratification often found in tr*sh novels. This book is more refined in taste, you need to slowly savour it.

It's definitely on my must-read list!

This is a work with an unreliable narrator and it is the best I have read of its kind.

The protagonist is crazy (or not) and you just don't know whether or not you can believe what he describes to you.

The whole theme is very well constructed, the text is very well written and I did not find any noticeable flaws (that bothered me) in the translation.

... more>> It's simply amazing how the author managed to make a story with a schizophrenic protagonist viable and interesting.

There is violence, mystery, adventure and a very rich world. If you like that and felt an attraction to the theme that the author proposes, give it a chance. 4.0 definitely does not do justice to how good this work is. <<less

Before reading this story, let me tell you to not have too many expectations about what the story would be. Just enjoy the ride and experience it as it is.

Now, I don't get why this is rated as 3.9, I'm guessing most people dislike it because they either got confused or were dissatisfied by the MC's personality in handling things. If you got confused, then it's on purpose, the story's made to make you feel like you're insane.

However, regarding the MC's personality, it is a different matter. One, the MC... more>> himself is insane most times. Two, he's not good or evil, he's a very grey character that exists outside the definition of good and evil because of his insanity. And three, he's not stuck to any trope or cliche you'd see anywhere. Simply put, he's not what you'd expect.

As someone who's very close to completing this, I can safely say for sure that this is a masterpiece. Also, if you still don't get what the whole story is about even after reading hundreds of chapters into it, then this is simply not for you. The story is meant for people who like to rack their brains, or at least are intrigued enough to rack their brains.

The character of the MC is secondary to the story, as he is simply the product of the insanities that exist in this novel. For people who came expecting the MC to behave like what you'd expect for an insane person, then you can just throw that out of the window. Most novels portraying insanity cannot do it justice as they either just make a very edgy MC or an MC who rabbles about the most nonsensical things. In this novel, you can actually feel like you're going crazy alongside him.

Overall, this story deserves a 10/10. Nothing is perfect, but my 10/10 is merely me saying that it's at the top of the top. If you haven't read it yet, I suggest you do. <<less

The novel is really unique in that it is entirely based off of the protagonist's mental illness and hallucinations.

The protagonist isn't evil, not sure where that idea came from, but some may find him unlikable. I liked him fine, personally, and I think his character makes sense for an eighteen year old struggling to make sense of the world. He gets tricked quite a bit because of this, especially in the early parts where he has no idea about anything. Also, there's an organization dedicated to deceiving people (Zuowangdao), so... more>> I'm not sure what you'd even expect.

As mentioned by the other reviews, the romance Li Huowang has with Bai Lingmiao/Yang Na isn't the best. I think it'd be far better if there wasn't a romance at all, because it becomes apparent very quickly that the author doesn't really know how to write a romance. They care about each other, that's it.

However, I liked the other characters fine. They're not exceptionally well-developed compared to other books, but I really cared about Zhuge Yuan and Li Sui. You can really see how all the characters Li Huowang met impact him, whether they are kind or cruel.

I read this in Chinese and Baidu translated the words I couldn't understand, so I'm not sure how the translation is.

The worldbuilding is amazing in my opinion, and the plot twists are incredible. I really encourage everyone to read it, as long as you don't mind explicit violence, some cannibalism, su*cide (mostly by other characters, but the protagonist does have moments where he contemplates it), and lots of self-harm. It's popular for a reason, and the fan content is amazing as well. <<less

This novel will hook you up if you are interested in chinese cultivation novels but is bored with the overused clichês and plots. The author utilizes psychological horror/ horror elements to create his own world where reality and delusion mingles together and what is true and what is fake can change by the flip of a single coin.

The main character is aflicted by severe mental illness and is forced to be confined in a mental asylum by his family to seek treatment. His childhood sweetheart and parents are deeply concerned... more>> by his worsening condition but what everyone thinks is the delusion of a decaying mind may not be as simple as everyone thinks it is.

Warning: This book is not for everyone, it has sensitive violent content and the story is pretty grim. That said, my reading experience will be detailed bellow, I will continue reading and updating as more chapters are translated.

The protagonist delusions are based on a cultivation like world where he and a group of young and disabled people were kidnaped and forced to submit to a crazed daoist cultivatior. By being useful they can scape the fate of being used as raw materials to refine the monster cultivation pills. The main character dances between both worlds and by being subjected to the dread and horror of his delusions and the warmth of his family starts to question what is real and what is fake.

At the start this concept was fresh and kind of interesting but it was recycled to the point of exhaustion by the author. Every dozen chapters or so the main character will have a mental breakdown and identity crisis, if it's not him it will be someone close to him. It got to my nerves the lack of answers and progress regarding his status as a metally ill person/strayed one on the cultivation world.

The suporting characters are lackluster and boring, both his childhood sweetheart and his girl on the cultuivation world are pretty much the same. The cultivation world girl is so bland that the author had to change her personality in a single chapter to make her work again with the main character (I bet the chinese readers were hating a lot to make him do something like this lol).

Also the main character doesn't get a break, he is always clueless about the world he is in, people use his naivety and lack of knowledge to backstab and make use of him through 360 chapters straight. He is always in pain, being it physically or mentally. It is frustrating to read but at the same time I'm curious to see what answers the author will cook to pay off all the bullshit.

This novel is a wild ride. Here's a loose summary that doesn't spoil much:

  • MC is a mental hospital patient who has hallucinations of being in a fantasy world.
  • It's written so that you never really know whether what he's experiencing is real or not. It feels like you're going crazy along with him.
  • The world is loosely based on Cthulhu mythology mixed with cultivation.
  • There's some seriously f*cked up parts like sacrificing/torturing children, women treated like toilets, and self-mutilation.
  • MC's craziness means that he's a rare ingredient. 99% of cultivators want to either trick or capture him. Everyone else, even his friends, thinks he's a dangerous schizophrenic.
  • one of the main villain groups are a bunch of tricksters who just f*ck around for fun as part of their cultivation, and they especially enjoy f*cking with MC who is mentally ill.
  • MC tries to stay moral, but his hallucinations and experiences lead him to become evil.

I've experienced paranoia under the effect of mind-altering drugs, and I can say the writing of MC's psyche as he begins to doubt himself and his surroundings feels very well-written. I even wonder if the author has gone through something similar. The only con is that sometimes the writing becomes messy and unclear, but 99% of the time it's a solid 5/5 read.

Dao of bizzarre immortal best novel I have read in a long time, read till 500 chapters and totally unique experience only thing is that you should read with no expectation and enjoy the ride, The world is bizzare and plot twists are amazing, probably as good as lotm and reverend insanity, Been a long time since I read this kind of quality novel.

Dont know if people can differentiate between quality novel or junk novel but if you are looking for quick power fantasy with shitty world building than this... more>> one is not for you. This one has amazing world building in depth plot and bizzarre amazing plot twists totally one of a kind experience like all other top novels. <<less

I get that the novel is trying to be confusing but it really did take me out of the novel, at times and made me start to lose interest near the end. The end I honestly think should have just ended at 1023, I was not a fan of the doctor PoV ending.

Actually a really amazing novel with a unique concept.

Interesting premise and the plot actually revolve around the problem of strangeness and bizarre things.

MC is troubled mentally and sees things and even we as readers don't know which side is real and which is a hallucination.

... more>> The development is engaging, as in it's not generic and cliche, I actually don't know where the author is going with this story, which is a good thing. It's not predictable.

Characters are unique. Even side characters are unique.

The only reason for my average rating is that it bored me by around chapter 130.

I don't know if it's the slow pace or if it's the general situation of MC barely changing or what, but you just start to get bored after a while. The same thing happened a few times which is MC being deceived, and the author is milking and prolonging each arc more than necessary. This story is like a slice of life but dark.

To enjoy it, you have to change your mindset and expectations. Think of it more like a mellow slice of life mystery novel that has a mentally ill MC (still don't know if this is true). Expect slow worldbuilding and subdued undertones.

I would enjoy it more in a different format like a manhua. It's a refined taste; you can't expect a thriller when reading this.

For now, I stalled reading and will continue for when I'm in the mood for it. <<less

One word: masterpiece. The translator really outdid themselves.

Even if the plot isn't your cup of tea, I don't think anyone can deny how absolutely amazing the writer's style is. It lives up to my expectation from reading others' comments about you never really being able to tell what's real or fake. You'll literally be as confused as the protagonist.

Not only that, you can't even trust what the protagonists says, which by the way— unreliable narrator is the absolute best trope there is for keeping you on your toes.

Read... more>> this for a deepdive full of horrors and suffering. It's not your xianxia of wisened kind masters and eager strong disciples.

One thing I think the story failed at though, is romance, lol. Perhaps the manhwa will do the girls justice. It's so underserved that as a romance-lover I wish it was just left out entirely rather than acting as a convenient plot crutch to fall on.

All in all though, absolute reccomend but only if you can stomach the behemoth 1k chapters (one chapter is about the length of half a regular chapter from normal sized books I'd say, so it might be more accurate to say it feels like a 500pg book).

The start is great: crazy MC who is willing to sacrifice innocents to save himself (although he's never really evil imo, torturing enemies is common and exterminating enemies does include the children). He's definitely a dick, but a lot of that is being too busy with his own sh*t to care about others. One of the best insane MCs I've seen: even the reader can't tell if things are real or delusions.

He's honestly not very naive... he does get tricked, but he learns from his mistakes. Even if he is... more>> tricked, it's almost always more him being extremely desperate and grasping at anything than naivety (or just having extremely tricky enemies).

The romance sucks, but it isn't the worst I've seen. I'm stopping here because there seems to be a bunch of time BS (seems because there could always be a better explanation later due to insane world), and tbh it has gotten a bit repetitive.

I still highly recommend reading this! Be aware that the TL tones stuff down, which makes some parts less impactful. A pretty much spoiler-free example:

The human TL doesn't really fit the character, but the MTL is way more brutal and reasonable. There are lots more examples too; tbh I'd recommend using MTL and supplementing with human TL. <<less
