Criminally underrated series. One of the most unique dark fantasy setting with a very active protagonist, who has his traumas and past issues, outwitting and using his sheer determination and knowledge to win against various antagonists and protect the true hero of the story.

I love our main character. He has some grit and is actively driving the story instead of just sitting around, letting stuff happen to him. The heroine and supporting characters all have their own perspective and feelings, and I really like the struggles the heroine herself has... more>> to undergo, feeling inferior and beneath the MC, and hence admiring and loving him, despite her talent overshadowing his. Their dynamic is great.

Protagonist isn't overpowered and doesn't grow stronger significantly till ch 57, so don't expect anything here. It is only 228 chapters and I am a bit worried if it can resolve all the problems that quickly since the pace is perfect, but not quick enough to tackle the enormous antagonists in the story. Since MC has spent a few years in this world, it does bring into question why he didn't use his knowledge prior to meeting the heroine, but that can be justified by his intention to not disrupt anything in the story.

But putting those qualms aside, this series is truly amazing and I look forward to what's left in this series. <<less

Edit: so that 'Harem' tag was just added recently. I'm pretty sure I didn't see any when I checked this novel out. Should've known, really...

Well, I've already read it. And this won't change my opinion anyway. But just so you know, this review of mine was created when I thought it was just your usual Isekai novel with no 'Harem' tag in it.

Real Score: 6.8/10

Huh, I kinda liked that. Even with the harem undertones. 👀

Did you guys know about those famous fairy tales? Such as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, The Princess and the Frog, etc.? What if someone, with a bit of creativity, used those fairy tale premises to create a game? But this time with the added "spice"? In this story, the fairy tale Princesses were no longer Princesses, but Witches who initiated a war with each other that lasted for hundreds of years.

Eugene, who was reincarnated into that dark, gritty game world, decided to become the protagonist's trainer. So that they could rise as a true hero of justice that will protect the world from the Witches.

I thought this was going to be another typical overpowered-character kind of story. Where the main character helps the protagonist of the game become stronger but ends up turning into the main hero himself. But oh man, this novel was soooo much more. 😲

Spoiler

It was a story about an imperfect God trying to create a perfect world. But His own desires ended up ruining everything.

I liked it. And I'm saying this with a clear head, even though I hate harem/reverse-harem genres. Why did I say it had harem undertones? Because all the female characters—NPCs, allies, even enemies—were coveting Eugene, like a moth to a flame. The fairy tales of The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, and The Princess and the Frog that I talked about in the paragraph before? Those were fairy tales where the main characters are all female. So, it's no wonder there were a lot more women than men in this novel.

Sometimes, I did feel uneasy whenever there were some scenes of them being excessively clingy to Eugene (as if there were no other men around in this world. Which, is honestly the main reason why I dislike harem genres). But once the plot twist was revealed, I was like, "ooohhh they flocked around him because it was a 'built-in setting!" You won't understand why I said this without reading the novel, but yea. That's why I kept reading this story till the end. Because there was actually a coherent explanation.

And speaking about Eugene. He was definitely the perfect protagonist for this bittersweet story. This guy was actually... a depressed, broken man. Yet at the same time, determined as all hell. Back when he was still a rookie, all of his seniors and team members had died protecting him. That caused him to drown in deep grief, with no will to live. If death came knocking, he was ready to accept it with open arms. At the same time, however, he didn't want to waste the second life his comrades had graciously given him. He didn't want to die without putting up a fight. So Eugene kept pushing forward. He kept fighting, kept on moving, until there was no more regret left in him. And... Idk... that was kind of inspiring.

Spoiler

Although near the final chapters, Eugene was consumed with excessive guilt. He felt that his interference in the original game's story had caused many characters—who might've otherwise grown on their own—to become too dependent on him. This part of the story felt somber. Sad. I honestly wanted to cry seeing Eugene like that. He was like Atlas, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. He never had time for himself. He might've been the "true" protagonist of the novel, but he acted more like an expendable extra. It... honestly hurt my heart a bit. Like watching Tony Stark all over again 😭

Somehow, I liked this novel. Every character had distinct personalities, the action scenes were awesome. Eugene was the type of protagonist who used brains instead of brawn (my favorite kind of character), and the story's pacing was solid too. Well... except for that one arc, where Eugene tried to save his friend but ended up fighting a witch wannabe instead. That whole thing felt like pure plot convenience. Eugene had come to the hidden castle to ask for help, not searching for his friend yet. But somehow... bam! He just randomly found his friend in the castle's underground prison!. The fight scenes were great, don't get me wrong. But still. It felt a bit too convenient.

Oh, and I had a complaint about Oscar as well. He was a nice character, but he barely got any screen time. At first, he even seemed like he'd be Hilde's (the female lead's) "future husband". Meaning, he was supposed to be an important character. But he didn't contribute much! Aside from being the "kidnapped princess". Yeah. Not only did he barely show up, but when he did, it was just to get captured by the opposing party! His role felt unclear, and honestly, I kind of forgot about him. Such wasted potential. 😞

7/10. I couldn't give it more because... well... even though I liked the story, it still had those harem undertones in it. And near the end of the novel, there was way more dialogue than action. I usually don't mind that, because I love lore. But it made the downtime feel too long since each chapter was only around 3, 000 words, so explaining all the lore ended up taking way too many chapters. Cough it was like Persona 4 Golden all over again. s*upid winter arc cough.

Spoiler

And the ending was open-ended too. I had mixed feelings about stories that ended like this since it depended on execution. And in my opinion... the execution here wasn't that great because the world was still at war. And here I was hoping that the 'peace' Eugene had tried so hard to get lasted a bit longer. Seriously, that one-shot epilogue was NOT good. This is actually what made my rating drop significantly. I was originally going to give it, at least, 7/10, but alas. 🫤
