“Dad, you’ve been awfully chummy with Ren-kun from next door lately,” Hana Tanaka observed, her eyes narrowed at her father, Kenji Tanaka, who stubbornly was still in her Magical Girl Black outfit.

“Ah, Hana-chan! Well, Dad and Ren-kun were just… discussing your future marriage prospects with him!” Black stammered, a bead of sweat forming under her bangs.

“Still in that ridiculous getup, Dad? And why haven’t you changed back for days? The neighbors are starting to give us looks!”

“A Magical Girl must always be vigilant against the encroaching Evil Organization threatening our beloved city!”

“Enough excuses! Tell me the truth, Dad!” Hana demanded, hands on her hips.

After a long long while of silent, Black sighed, “Hana, my dearest daughter… your dear Okaasan, before she passed, wished for my happiness. And Ren-kun… he’s just like her. So gentle, so kind! It must be her, reincarnated as a boy! This magical power, this frilly costume… it was all granted so I could be with her again!”

Hana recoiled. “Dad, that’s… that’s completely ridiculous! You can’t actually be planning to marry him!”

“And why shouldn’t your Dad find a little joy?!” Black fumed, cheeks flushing, “Don’t you understand the first thing about filial piety?! One more word of your youthful impertinence, and Ren-kun will be your new step-father by sunset!”

“You crazy old fool! So that was your twisted plan all along! Fine! If it’s a battle you desire, then a battle you shall receive! Only one Tanaka is walking out of this living room alive!”

“Prepare yourself! Witness my ultimate technique! God-Severing Cleave!!”

Don't get me wrong

This novel is still a great read. The author's writing is immaculate; it's just that I'm not personally a fan of the story's direction.

It follows the story of a middle-aged man who, as the synopsis says, somehow gains the ability to transform into a magical girl. Alongside him is his rebellious daughter and her truly genious boyfriend.

The gender-bender element felt unsettling at first, but as the story progressed, it began to make perfect sense. The author does an excellent job of portraying the protagonist's inner pride as... more>> a father, which adds emotional depth to the narrative.

The world-building is impressive. While not flawless, it's more than enough to spark curiosity about the mysteries of the world. The pacing, however, is a bit fast at times.

What I personally didn't enjoy as mentioned in the synopsis as the fact that the father ends up falling in love with his daughter's boyfriend. I was initially in denial about this plot point, which is why I kept reading. To my surprise, the novel turned out to be genuinely enjoyable. I looked forward to each chapter, even though I knew that particular relationship was inevitable.

Spoiler

Gosh, the story started to feel a bit forced when Kenji suddenly needed romantic love to strengthen his magical powers to supress the hatred of crystal. At that moment it should have been his daughter man like his true love was familial love from the beginning no? It was perfect now I just. Can't accept this.

Regardless of that, if you are a fan of yaoi?? You would enjoy this <<less
