I’ve reincarnated as the reverse harem game’s villainess, the one and only adopted daughter of the ducal Eckart family.

But the difficulty just has to be the worst!

Everything I do will only lead me to death.

I must be paired with one of the main male characters from the heroine’s harem before the ‘real daughter’ of the duke family appears!

Two older brothers who always pick a fight with me on every little thing.

The insane crown prince whose route will always lead to my death.

‘I only see the heroine and no one else’s wizard, and also her loyal s*ave knight, too!

‘First, let’s take some of them which I see no hope in, out of the list!’

“I didn’t know my place up until now. From now on, I’ll live as quiet as a mouse so you wouldn’t care the slightest bit!

But why do their interests in me keep on rising every time I draw the line?!

I enjoy how flawed the protagonist is. She consistently fails to notice the good will others show her and to accept that the poor relationships she's had have often been partially her own fault. Everything is because of someone else and she's just an innocent victim. And you can see how this really makes things more difficult for her and causes her to read people wrong. She also isn't really a very good person to begin with, nor is she particularly bad, which makes her come across as very human.... more>> She doesn't want to save the world and heal all the wrongs of the world, she just wants to not die.

I'm bumping this up another star. The character and relationship writing is fantastic so far as I'm concerned. Everyone is at least a little in the wrong, some more so than others, and yet if you make the effort to understand them no one really comes across as being evil/irredeemable.

Though I admit I don't know what people see in Eclise. <<less

Many people pointed out that the MC is the real problem by the end of the novel and kind of have to agree. She is the only one that doesn't change because her arc has supposed to already end in her previous life. So all her supposed improvement was given to the real daughter instead. Making the story after the certain chapter ship to the viewer support the real daughter instead of the MC

This story was amazing, though the translations were inconsistent. It was easy to tell a lot of it was just straight machine translation with no editing at all, including dozens and dozens chapters with basic copy errors in every line.

But I muscled through it because the story, though muddled with bad translation, was still so good.

This story started out very typical for an isekai revenge story. A small, close setting in the household of the Duke. Just as the story was starting to feel stale, it shifted. The story grew,... more>> the world of the story grew. And kept growing and growing. Some of the characters we were getting tired of left the story for a while, and other characters became important.

The story demonstrated the "Show, don't tell" principle - we didn't just get "told" that new Penelope (I'll call her "Penny" for clarity) was growing and changing and moving on, moving beyond the house that original Penelope couldn't escape. Penny recognized that the original Penelope died in that house. I thought it was wonderful that Penny empathized deeply with Penelope, and held every person accountable for their treatment of Penelope, though Penelope was gone forever.

It was amazing to watch Penny grow beyond her fear that left her trapped in the story of the game, and stop caring so much about the affection and reputation scores of the male leads. By the end of the story we could see who Penny wanted to be, and watch Penny do exactly what SHE wanted to do. It was inspiring how Penny spoke her truth, and remembered to uphold original Penelope's truth, and ended relationships that were only dragging her down. New growth requires letting go of what weighs you down. Forgiveness is a gift from the giver, but not an obligation. And I really liked that. <<less

I’m debating myself whether to give 4 or 3, tbh 3.5 would have been better.

So I was baited by the manhwa, as I found the initial story to be intriguing. A villainess as the MC isnt new, but the game setting, how she already locked on one of the ML as her savior was refreshing. I also love the world of the game, so many interesting and almost harry potter like well thought layered storylines. But halfway through my interest waned because of the MC

I really dislike her attitude toward her adopted family. By all means she is entitled to either get revenge or ignore them, what doesnt make sense to me is that I feel like she’s projecting her hate toward her past family into the duke family. Everything she does is a projection. As someone who always think that it’s only a game, weird how she cant differentiate her feeling from the alternate world and the game world.

Other thing that turns me off is her manipulation of Eclise. She destroyed him. And got the gall to be mad at him for betraying her (out of love or obsession rather). Who was the one intercepting his plot line and made him a mere s*ave without the opportunity to free himself? Who made constant promise to see him but often failed him? Eclise was an ab*sed war prisoner turned s*ave who latched on the only person who showered him with kindness, Penelope was very manipulative of him. Always reiterating that he is important to him, showering him with gifts but also neglecting him. For her mistreatment of eclise, penelope should have suffered

  1. It started out so promising that I wanted to give it 5 stars. I liked the different personalities each character was given even penny's maid and the Duke's butler. But...
  2. It didn't really develop the characters.. they (characters) were altered to fit the story.
  3. Penny never forgave anyone (except her maid, to some extent, but she was a side character).
  4. Penny did whatever she wanted but complained she wasn't allowed to do what she wanted.
  5. It started out so entertaining though...<sigh> it seemed the story couldn't even decide its own setting. If not for the premise, the events became modern-day happenings of a petty entitled girl with no sympathy for others except for the prince.
  6. Too many to write: I don't know how to justify it; it was good but it was also bad

I liked the initial parts of the story, it's cliche but handled quite nicely. But after the introduction chapters are over, the quality goes downhill.

The introduction seemingly setting things up to be hard for the MC, but it goes away in less than 10 chapters. For those who knows how to read between the lines, rather than hard mode it's pretty clear that it's going to be the easy mode for her.

The MC on the other hand, keeps doing the worst thing possible for every situation but always gets away... more>> lightly due to plot armor. In a span of 20 chapters she should've died a few times due to her own ignorance of how to assess risks, which made me wonder if there's some screw loose in her brain.

The logic on the plot progression is so awkward if you ever tried to scrutiny even for a bit.

The only positive part I found is on the beginning, when she's initially became the villaines. On those few first interactions she acts smart and it seems challenging to survive. But after that, nope, she's dumb in irritating way since the author played it as if she's meant to be smart. I can appreciate dumb MCs as long as the author is aware of it, but in this case it's not. <<less

  1. Spoiler below. I'm very frustrated with this novel and the main cause is the protagonist. I started by loving her and the story about how she managed to turn her life around even though she was going through so much ab*se.

what made me hate her afterwards is the way she treats Eclise, I didn't want her to break up with he, but it still pisses me off the way she treated him because she literally destroyed him and used him and then when he cheated on she (because he had been brainwashed) she still acted like she was the victim and kept cursing him. The Eclise he already had a life of ab*se before Penelope and he simply grabbed the first person who treated him well, when he learned that she was using his love, he started to get obsessed and fell into the abyss himself.

Another thing that irritates me is that Penelope doesn't have any development, she starts treating people like objects and ends up treating them the same way, that is, she never got over her own traumas, even when people did everything to redeem themselves. The ending for me wasn't the least bit happy ending with Eclide in a mental breakdown because of the MC. To tell the truth, Eclise seems more pitiful than MC. Anyway, very disappointed in how he was ab*sed and in the end the author wanted readers to see him as the real villain. (I'm also irritated by MC's hypocrisy in wanting to be treated with sincerity when she manipulates and uses everyone).

Anyway, the protagonist made me hate this story, I really like anti-hero or villain characters, but there are things that for me don't.

Like all the other reviews, the main issue of this story is the MC herself. I actually came from the manhwa and the manhwa made her character better than it actually is.

As I continued off the comic to the novel, it was instant disappointment. The MC is very unwhelming. The first like maybe 60-80 chapters were great but afterwards it was just meh. It’s still an ok read but the potential this novel had wasn’t done justice. I’d go into greater depth on why, but a lot of the other... more>> reviews have already pointed it out so I’ll just leave my two cents instead. <<less

I read this first from the manhwa and switched to the novel. The manhwa is too slow.

Anyway this started off quite good like some of the same genre novel about transmigration etc. The FL had the same problem like the villain. She was bullied and ab*sed by her family.

It can be a lil uncomfortable for some reader.

This novel is really not worth my time and emotion because I find the girl is horrible. She talks about others, despise them but she herself doesn't seem to treat people sincerely.

It is one of the best villainess novels that I have seen. The way it was written in Penelope's POV makes you really feel for her and feel sorry for her. There were a lot of times that I felt shaking with her and you would really go through the feeling of trauma with her. I didn't get that with any Villainess manhwa or novel, so this is saying a lot for it.

I'm still at c105 but so far...

I can really see why the crown prince is the ML. The interactions with Penny was not forced. The chemistry they have and the story of how it came to be is the best among all the ML. If you're still early in the novel, you'll see soon why.

I don't doubt this is a good story and it has a really interesting premise and story introduction. I personally like the heroine, her backgrounds and the other characters... The events were good enough as well.

I wonder if this is just me but, the translation of the second group/person taking this story was a bit bad.

It's a frustrating read.

This is the review I hope future readers can see before they decide to start this novel.

TL;DR - Bad translation midway. Plot revolves around MC licking the dogpoop off of all her ab*sers' shoes in order to stay alive.

... more>> Here is the information I wish I knew before I went on this terrible journey.

First, the translation.

I read the entire series on Towel City but it's pretty obvious that it's a repost from a bunch of other translation sites. Out of 240+ chapters, only the first 40 chapters were of decent quality. Ch 40-150 were basically unreadable - it's just machine-translated. Ch 150-end were a little better but the translators kept putting their comments in-between the texts which can be both annoying and confusing at times.

Second, the characters.

TL;DR none of the characters were interesting or likable enough to root for.

The main character is a modern Korean student who got isekai-ed into the otome game she was playing. And weirdly enough, her real life is strikingly similar to the villainess, Penelope, whom she reincarnated into. They were both severely ab*sed in their family, starved and mistreated their whole life.

Actually, the only likable character is Penelope. The REAL Penelope. Because despite being ab*sed, hurt, gaslit, and suffocated until she died again and again, she never let go of her pride. She was the only sane person in the world filled with crazy bastards. She was very aware of her surrounding and what each person wants from her but she never bowed down to them. Her only flaw was responding with anger towards everyone and everything which led to her death, but witnessing what she has been through, I can't really fault her for being angry all the time.

Meanwhile, the MC cherished her life more than real Penelope and decided to grovel on the ground kissing these ab*sers' feet in order to stay alive. If I have to describe her - she's a pushover mid.

As the main character, she is not smart, funny, or interesting enough that I want to follow her narrative. She is not ruthless or decisive enough to be an anti-hero villainess. She is not kind-hearted or considerate enough to be a heroine. She's just mediocre.

Third; the plot.

It's just frustrating to read and the only thing that kept me going was because I want to see the ending of these terrible characters. I can't say all of them got what they deserved though. So you'd be left feeling unsatisfied.

I'm going to write out the entire plot, so read at your own devise.

The premise:

The MC who is a modern-era college student is an illegitimate child of a rich family who got extremely mistreated and ab*sed, but she persevered until she's able to leave the house but ended up living in poverty. She was then isekai-ed into the villainess in the otome game she played who always ended up dying no matter what path she took.

The first life aka. the game:

Note: The 5 capture targets or male leads are: Callisto - The Crown Prince, Vinter - The Wizard, Eclise - The Swordman, and two Eckart brothers - Derrick and Leonard.

Spoiler

The Duke of Eckart has 3 children - 2 sons and a daughter. The two sons, Derrick and Leonard, lost their sister, Yvonne, during a festival and she was taken over by a demon called Leila. While looking for his missing daughter, the Duke found Penelope, a beggar girl living in poverty and found her a bit similar to Yvonne so he adopted her. However, his two teenage sons thought Penelope was going to take their sister's place so they hated her and ab*sed her. The Duke is a failure of a father and neglected her. The servants were aware of the masters' thoughts so they also ab*sed Penelope, physically and mentally tormenting her for years. She was served rotten food so she always starved. Her bath water was always cold and she was waken up everyday by being stabbed with a needle in her arm to the point she has a permanent blue bruise from all the stabbings.

The ab*se also spread outside as people noticed that no one really cared about Penelope, so when she attended events with other nobles, she was also ab*sed and manipulated. (The girl never got a break!) She was, many times, manipulated into disadvantageous situations but no one in the Dukedom ever defended her or even listened to her. They just painted her as a crazy dog they need to clean after.

Unbeknownst to them, Penelope actually had ancient wizard's blood in her which allowed her to see the truth, even though no one believed her. So she became the only sane person surrounded by people who keep insisting she's the crazy one.

As she grew up, her two adoptive brothers, Derrick and Leonard, lust after her but since they had been abusing her, making her live lower than a s*ave, they can't stand their own lustfulness. So the ab*se became even more severe with s*xual undertone. For one, any of the men in the house could enter her room without her permission, even the butler. The brothers also gave her gifts but acted shocked when she didn't immediately like them back. Like they're thinking "We stop abusing you for 2 seconds. We also give you this pretty thing. Why you don't love us?!"

Flash forward to Yvonne coming back with the help of the wizard - Vinter. But remember it was not actually Yvonne, it's Leila demon who hypnotized and brainwashed everyone. The only person she couldn't brainwash was Penelope due to her ancient blood but since no one cares about Penelope anyway, she was made into the villain and died by the male lead's hands. Later, Vinter was able to wake up from the brainwash and decided to turn back time in order to stop the demon from taking over the world.

[collapse]

Now, onto the second life.

Spoiler

It was unclear whether Penelope was aware she was reborn. But roughly 3 months before Yvonne/demon came back, Penelope died due to severe mistreatment of the Eckart, that's when the MC took over her body. This time, instead of angry outbursts when she's mistreated, the MC grovel herself to the ground and tried to lick these male lead's feet to increase her favorability with them. Apparently, if she's able to gain 100 favorability points with a male lead, she could escape the game and return home.

For some weird reasons, the groveling on the floor seemed to work and at least the people in the Eckart stopped abusing her. Her life was at least bearable now. The duke became a bit more attentive. Derrick and Leonard still lust after her though, and become even more obvious to the point my skin crawled anytime she was alone with either of them.

The MC remembered the other male lead - Eclise, a s*ave who was given to her as an escort instead of a proper knight - seemed to be the only guy who ever treated Penelope with some empathy in the first life, so she made him her main capture target and tried to reach end-game with him before Yvonne come back. Meanwhile she also met other capture targets and raised some favorability with them as well. She became friendly with the wizard and had a mutual crush with the Crown Prince who seemed to be the only person who treated her as an actual human being.

There was this subplot where Penelope was manipulated by a Countess into acting like a crazy person. In order to suppress the news and without listening to her explanation, the Duke gave the Countess his diamond mine and of course, Penny was blamed for the whole situation. In the second life, the crown prince investigated the whole ordeal and learned the truth that the whole thing was a plot the Countess planned to get that diamond mine. And he was like "I didn't even try. It's a pretty clear setup." It was never a clever plot to trap Penelope, the Duke and his sons just purposefully ignored Penny, finding it easier and more to their liking to believe that she's a mad dog below them.

The Crown Prince was the only male character with critical thinking ability as he was in a similar situation. His mother died and the second queen and her som tried to assassinate him all the time, so he has to always be alerted. Their chemistry is actually pretty good. The MC and the prince often have actual conversations, not just banters, and they helped each other a lot.

Anyway, back to Eclise, her main target. The plan backfired because Eclise knew she was using him and didn't treat him wholeheartedly. He became obsessed with her, knowing she manipulated him but still liked the attention he got and wanted to have her anyway. So he was lured by Yvonne/demon and betrayed the MC, being the one who brought Yvonne back to the family. As a result, the MC severed ties with Eclise and it's game over for her. She could no longer go back home as she failed to reach end game with Eclise.

Since Yvonne is back, the MC was put in awkward position as the "fake" and Yvonne was being really creepy white lotus who cried all the time, acting like she was bullied by MC. Tired of having to grovel all the time, the MC decided to forcefully leave the game by committing su*cide. However, during an event, she noticed Yvonne/demon was trying to create a self-play drinking poison and blaming the MC, so she snatched that glass and drank the poison herself.

This became a pivotal moment as (1) the crown prince confessed he loved her, meaning she could have reached end-game with him all these times had she made him her target; (2) the wizard realized Yvonne was a demon in disguise and decided to help her; (3) Eclise became insane due to brainwashing; (4) the duke and his sons realized how much she had suffered under their ab*se and neglect. Now they all just want her to not die. And she didn't die as the wizard had an antidote with him.

After she recovered, she asked the duke to let her leave the house but before she got approved, the MC and Yvonne confronted, ending up with MC leaving the house to find ways to kill the demon. She and the crown prince traveled together and MC confessed that she was not the real Penelope and that she came from a different world. They had a final showdown and eventually defeated the demon, killing Yvonne's body in the process.

During the aftermath, the MC stayed in palace with the prince and they got engaged. She severed ties with the duke and let him know she couldn't forgive him and the entire dukedom for abusing her for years. They had a somewhat pleasant relationship though as Duke Eckart is still her maiden family. Later she became a professor in archaeology, married the prince/emperor, and had a daughter.

In the side story, it was revealed that her original body was in a coma for years. Her father and stepbrothers had taken care of her body. They also felt sorry for how they treated her. The MC came back to pull the plug and put her comatose body to the final rest. She didn't forgive them but also didn't hold any resentment either. The end.

[collapse]

Now, the criticism... I'll go point by point and character by character.

This novel is very victim-blaming. A bunch of times you would see how they try to make it the real Penelope's false that she was ab*sed and killed. Even the MC who took over said that Penelope deserved it because Yvonne was a gentle sweetheart and Penelope is not, she's filled with anger and contempt. Like what the actual f*ck? Why is it a responsibility of the victim how they should act to not be a target of ab*se and bullying?

I can't stand any of the male leads. If this is the real world, all of them are walking red flags. The author tried to endear some of the MLs to the audience. Leonard, in particular, seemed to have a redemption arc as he tried to treat MC better, but he's still doing it with lust and not love, not even out of good will. It's always me me me.

Let's start off with the Duke of Eckart - the root of all problems. I'm angry he didn't at least realized the real Penelope is already dead. Yeah, he was nice to the MC but only because he had a fetish for daughters. While he gave her things, he never really cared enough to ask if she's okay or what she really wanted. The guy took an orphan home and didn't even spare enough attention to raise her. He let her be ab*sed under his nose and even complacent to the ab*se himself.

Derrick and Leonard are disgusting stepbrothers you wouldn't want to live in the same house with. They ab*sed her and tormented her and made sure she lived a life worse than death. They couldn't come back to grace after they forced Penelope to die.

Derrick always blamed Penny for anything and everything. Even when it was found out that she's the victim, it's still Penny's fault for making a scene. Even when she committed su*cide, it was still her fault for tarnishing the Eckart's reputation. But he never raised a hand against her though, and in the end, he had the audacity to ask why Penelope didn't love him since he didn't ab*se her physically.

Leonard, on the other hand, is a tyrant. When Penelope first arrived, he put Yvonne's necklace in her room in order to make her become a thief. This event made the Duke neglected her and the servants hated her. He also led the ab*se, physically and verbally. I don't care others may find his banter with the MC cute. He was he primary reason Penelope was ab*sed and neglected till she died. And he never really regretted it even though he apologized. It was always to make himself feel better. Gosh the guy was so offended when he apologized and the MC didn't accept it. His true colors were shown.

In my opinion, all of Eckart should die and rot in hell for eternity.

If anyone from Eckart should be forgiven, it would be Emily. She was Penelope's dedicated maid and she was also one of the main ab*sers, but she later became an ally to the MC. At the very least, she didn't betray the MC again and still helped her even at the cost of her own safety. I don't like Emily, but at least she recognized how terrible she was and tried to make up for it.

Eclise - I think the MC deserved getting back-stabbed by Eclise. She treated the entire thing as a game too much that she never really bothered to get to know and understand Eclise. The guy was a prince, for christ's sake. Yeah, his country lost the war and he became a s*ave but he was still a prince. He had his own thoughts and he's an intelligent person. The MC just treated him like a pet, giving him things and visiting him once in a while to brush up some favorability. Following the final war wih Yvonne/demon, he lost his memories. When he met the MC again, she told him to go to his countrymen in the north. So I guess it's a somewhat happy-ending for him.

Vinter - The Wizard is a decent person, just with lots of secrets. He actually saved the entire world by rewinding back time. He's actually my favorite among the 5 male leads. He tried to help the children, help the MC, everyone. The MC gave him so much sh*t for testing her when, in all fairness to him, he was suspicious she might be Leila demon since she could use magic all of a sudden. It's a legit suspicion to have. At the end, he's still fine though.

The crown prince - as many have pointed out that, despite being the common trope of villainess ending up with a crown prince, he's very different from any other crown prince. He's foul-mouthed, hot-tempered, and cynical. He's actually would be happy destroying the world as he pretty much hated everyone. He's not the smart and calculative type, but more of the brute strength type. His love is yandere-ish, but not as controlling. As a male lead of a novel, he's an interesting enough character with some flaws and some charms. In real life though, his character is just a big red flag as he has no qualms killing people he didn't like. You never knew when he would turn around and kill you once he fell out of love with you. <<less

I think the translation is quite bad but.. Still grateful for the translation.

I read this one last year.. So this was a pretty late review.

as far as I can remember, at the beginning the novel was superb.. But after it gets to the second arc (at least that’s what it feels like) it’s getting uncomfortable to read. I was close to complete the novel but I stopped as I caught up with the translation then.. Because it was not worth the wait..

i don’t like when I feel the horrible/unreasonable act... more>> of the MC that may come from the personality of the author too.. Seems like she wants to justify her action through her fiction character. This feeling surged from time to time while reading it.. <<less

She tends to overlap her real life to the game girl's life. It's quite different in my opinion. Her family is actually horrible while these people/characters in the game now her real reality are not bad, just misunderstood her. I don't know why she can't see that people can't read mind. You gotta tell them why you're acting the way you do and what you're unhappy about. She just either endures it apologizes or lashes out? Unlike what she thinks, they're actually rational people unlike what portrayed in the game.... more>> Love is not given but earned in my opinion. She can't expects people to just love you or like you, you have to make an effort as well. She never really try to like them. She also sees them just as tools. <<less

This story is so disappointing. The way she treated Eclis and her character by the end of the novel is enough for the one star, but I did genuinely enjoy the beginning and the manwha's very good so far.

Spoiler

In the manwha, she even early on calls one instance of helping Eclis a "Who Killed My Baby" mission and it's like !!! Who killed your baby?? You killed your baby! Really deserving of the name villain.

This novel... Oh... The feelings I have for this novel.

I love it, I simply love it. How the MC is portrayed, how she deals with various situations and everything. I have to admit that I cried a lot reading this (it was hard not to after all she was through). I felt hate for some characters, too and even, if I completely agreed with everything she did, I can completely understand her. She was human, not perfect but, ironically, that made her even more perfect.

And another thing

I hate the eldest brother the most. You son of a b*tch, deserve to rot in hell.

I REALLLLLLYYYYYYYY LOVE THIS WEBNOVEL.

I don't know how to express it, but really if you have free time, read this. It has incredible characters development. From the most hated character into the lovable one. From the most annoying character, into the 'acceptable' one.

This novel really know how to stab me right in the feels.
