I’ve reincarnated as the reverse harem game’s villainess, the one and only adopted daughter of the ducal Eckart family.

But the difficulty just has to be the worst!

Everything I do will only lead me to death.

I must be paired with one of the main male characters from the heroine’s harem before the ‘real daughter’ of the duke family appears!

Two older brothers who always pick a fight with me on every little thing.

The insane crown prince whose route will always lead to my death.

‘I only see the heroine and no one else’s wizard, and also her loyal s*ave knight, too!

‘First, let’s take some of them which I see no hope in, out of the list!’

“I didn’t know my place up until now. From now on, I’ll live as quiet as a mouse so you wouldn’t care the slightest bit!

But why do their interests in me keep on rising every time I draw the line?!

This novel is really interesting!Unlike the other isekai novels, this one is more like a struggle to survive, not only that, normally other villainess just want to avoid and cheer on the female and male lead or something like that. Also, this novel makes me realize that my family is much, much better so, thank you for that.I hope our MC here finds her happy ending and just live her life instead of riding on a roller coaster, struggling to survive.I hope this updates soon!

Without giving any major spoilers out I'll just say that I enjoyed this novel even through some of the poor translations of a few chapters and I liked how real the characters felt.

Penelope is a character that is solely focusing on surviving, as she was for her entire life. She was transported into a game world where her situation was the exact same as in her real life. Probably even worse in some ways.

As she struggles to find ways to insure her survival with her prior knowledge of the game... more>> she makes mistakes, miscalculates, and takes risks. She isn't strong or powerful but she's quick and decisive. She isn't a saint nor is she a villain, she's simply human to put.

The other characters, despite the fact that some were against her, some helped her, and some betrayed her, they all had depth to them. The characters acted shallow, arrogant, self centered and self serving throughout and yet it was to a strangely understandable degree.

Even though, while reading I hated a certain characters, after I thought back to it, I could find myself understanding their motivations. That isn't saying that I like them now, I'm simply saying I hate them less.

The plot was very character driven with a lot of unexpected (and by unexpected I mean foreshadowed) twists and turns here and there. It was certainly an enjoyable ride and it's something I'd read again. <<less

First, I have to say that after reading the manhwa's available chapters I was hooked so I decided to try reading the novel. The MTL surprised me at first but fine, I've read mtls of the novels I love before so I thought I could survive. Boy, I regretted reading the novel so much.

It was because of the MC, Penelope. She had no character growth throughout the whole novel and the side stories made her worse to the point I had to stop reading them. Her manhwa... more>> version was more likeable, but in the novel her actions can no longer be excused because of her dumb decisions and s*upid plans that ended up backfiring to her face. And yet she never learned one bit. You've thought she would grow smarter as she learned more about the world of the game she found herself in but no, she remained the static character that was introduced in the first chapter. Aside from her tragic past, she had no character at all. Even after she fell in love with the ML, she never shown any changes in her core.

Speaking of the ML, he was an absolute delightful character in the main novel but in the side stories, the author ruined him and turned him into a stereotypical Yandere character. A shame because he is my favorite character in this novel and the reason why I kept reading till the end of the main story, aside from the Original FL, who was leagues more interesting and engaging than our typical annoying 'victim' MC.

Penelope is never a strong female character at all. <<less

Hah, what to say? I have a lot of mixed feelings, but I can tell the author put a lot of work into the story, no matter what others say, so I can't help but give it 5 stars for their efforts.

There are good things and bad things, but it all boils down to the characters, their actions, and the consequences they reap. The worldbuilding is good, not very unique but not a copy either. The 'game system' she has comes from an unexpected source explained later. Action scenes are... more>> written pretty decently. Romance, when it happens for real, is fluffy and sweet, I guess. Some of the events in the extra chapters bugged me a little, but no big deal.

Ah, I'll just go into the flaws by listing the characters, as that's where it lies.

Really, though. I don't control myself with spoilers, so only read if you don't mind big things being known early.

Penelope Eckhart: A decent MC who, though it seems like she just bows meekly in order to survive, grows stronger after raising the favorability enough that she doesn't have to worry about being killed, which is pretty early in the story. She starts to defend herself, scold who should be scolded, and cuts the ab*sers out of her life when the opportunity presents herself.
Spoiler

She does forgive the Eckhart family after severe apologies from all three... and a five year lull of not contacting them. I like that, as it's realistic. They have to show that they truly regret their actions first, and that they genuinely care about her, before she accepts them back into her life. As far as her original family back home... heheh. While it was revealed that they didn't hate her and did things 'for some reason', like social awkwardness and being jealous of her brains, they totally killed her, so they didn't get forgiveness at all.

[collapse]

Duke Eckhart: I grew to like him. He wasn't a ML (no daddy routes allowed, thanks), but ended up being more likeable than any of the MLs. He was the first of the three Eckhart men to understand they did Penny dirty. He could do no wrong in my eyes after that. He even made me laugh on occasion. I wish he had more scenes, cuz I got a crush.

Leonard Eckhart: The first son... was boring as dirt. He was probably supposed to be the cold type, but ended up that way instead. He didn't have a lot of scenes, but that's probably for the best. He was also the last of the Eckhart men to realize the error of his ways, and that was almost at the end of the story. Really, though, this guy was a total loser.
Spoiler

Putting aside that he ruined Penny's coming-of-age celebration and basically forced her to die, since he was brainwashed at the time, it was revealed that he had an undefined 'love' for Penelope (the original Penny) since she was brought to the mansion. He thought it was a good idea to cover it up with harshness and indifference, but selfishly wanted to use every excuse to keep her locked away at home, like a bird in a cage. Basically, he mentally ab*sed her, then used every wrong act she did as an excuse for house arrest. Worse, because he felt he was to blame for his real sister's disappearance, he had a psychological chip that made him want to blame every wrong thing on Penny. Even when she ends up drinking poison, he has the nerve to suspect that it's self-play. Like I said, a total loser.

[collapse]
Maybe if we got more scenes of him after coming to terms with his wrongs like the other Eckharts, it wouldn't be so bad, but here we are.

Reynold Eckhart: I really didn't like him at first, but he got better after the 'attic scene', which was still relatively early on. Because he's a tsundere typecast, he has a harsh mouth throughout the story, but sometimes his banter with Penny feels more playful than anything else, and you can tell he regrets his past actions when she shoves the truth of his actions in his face.

Marquis Vinter: He's aight. He has trust issues, but given what he's working towards, I think that's warranted. I feel a little sorry for him for a couple of reasons. If I were in Penny's shoes, I probably would've chosen him.

Eclise: Ugh. Everything I have to say about him is a spoiler. But it all boils down to this: I don't like him, even more than Leonard, and Penny should've just saved her money and bought a nice house or something instead.
Spoiler

Here's the breakdown: Penny buys him from a s*ave auction, in order to use him, and does not hide this fact, informing him that if he betrays her, it's all over. She buys him gifts and acts friendly to him in order to raise his favorability, saying he's her knight and the only one she can rely on. Note that this entire time, not a single lie or seduction occurred. Then, Eclise, with a 99% favorability, thanks her by bringing the original daughter back into the home, hoping Penny will be kicked out so he can forcibly run away with her. Basically, he becomes a selfish yandere who doesn't care what Penny wants and blames her saying 'she made him this way.' Ew. Anyway, he nearly kills her a few times, and never takes responsibility for it. I was glad when he died at the end. Of course, the extras had to ruin that. We knew it when they said no body was found, though. He has amnesia, but now his true nasty self is on the surface, so no one can mistake him for an innocent puppy like a lot of readers think at first. Judging by some reviews, it seems some readers still couldn't shake the illusion after his true garbage self was revealed.

[collapse]

Callisto: The crown prince of the empire who's first impression was pretty bad. Actually... he was pretty boring, too! Though I did find him funny at times, and smiled at a lot of his and Penny's interactions, and he did often randomly save her with a relatively valid excuse other than deus ex machina, I also felt like he, too, was a typecast.
Spoiler

This is the guy Penny actually ends up with, which is part of the problem. Ignoring that they have chemistry (and they do!), being with him means that Penny has to deal with court intrigue, politics, and the social gatherings she always abhorred as a general lifestyle. Even in the extras, it was shown she was always worried some opposing force might harm her daughter while she's away. It doesn't seem to be the life she wanted for herself, but because the MC has to be with the most perfect, most powerful option, it's Callisto she ends up falling for. More than that, Callisto is still flawed. He really doesn't seem like he'd be a good emperor. He's bloodthirsty, intentionally makes all his retainers afraid of him, doesn't have a clue about political relations, and seems to only be good at leading soldiers (but is he, really? If Penny weren't there for that aerial attack in the marsh, I think they'd probably be wiped out. Why were they relying on a depletable source like mana when actual, physical shields are a thing that exists?)

[collapse]

Ah, who else? Emily and Phenel, the maid and butler? They both make you angry as soon as you meet them, but by the end, you've forgotten how they used to be. Emily especially grew to become a strong support for Penny, to the point Penny felt indebted to her.

Oh, Yvonne!... No, that's a pretty big spoiler. Ah, what the heck, I already spoiled Callisto and Eclise, why not?
Spoiler

Let it be known that the original MC IS the main villain of the story. And it makes sense, now that we know some of Penny's deaths in normal mode shouldn't have happened because of the capture targets' real personalities. The Yvonne from the game was seducing them intentionally and brainwashing them with a purpose in mind. BUT. It's not Yvonne. It's a Leila demon that possessed the little Yvonne the day she and her brothers were split up. The real Yvonne is an innocent child spirit trapped in a mirror who later goes to be reincarnated after gaining closure.

This is a gem. The plot is pretty good and the character development is awesome. However, you need to prepare yourself as there is a lot of angst. At some point, I wanted to drop this because it just got so bad, my heart is broken everytime and I just felt so sorry for her. Both of her lives are with families that don't know how to take care of her which lead to her ab*se and eventual death.

Her family on earth

Spoiler

made her suffer so that she'll eat with them and go back to live with them. LIKE GUYS. That's not how it works. You need to talk to her. They kept saying that they love her (of course when she was lying on the hospital bed on a coma) but they never said that when she was fully conscious. GAHD. I blame the dad. He should've taken care of her more.

[collapse]

Then her family in the game was also as bad. The duke didn't know how to care for her and just allows her to run around wild and she did just that. He ignored her which allowed the servants of the mansion to ab*se her. I wanted to punch the face of that butler too. He knew about it but didn't do anything about it. He's the worst father and I was so sad everytime Penelope had to lower her head for him. Once he realizes his own mistakes, he did become a better father. But the MC has already been hurt too much.

Spoiler

There was one event where he gave her a crossbow which will erase the memory of the target before getting hit. He said to Penelope that she can shoot people as long as she gets them alone. HAHA.

[collapse]

The 2nd brother was also focusing on his own pain that he didn't understand Penelope's circumstances which led to his ab*se. Out of all the family, he is the one I like the most. His character development is pretty good and he realizes his mistakes later on. However, the MC's heart has turned cold so he needed to make extra effort to let her know that he now cares for her.

Now, Derrick. OMG THIS GUY I WANNA KILL. He also knows of the ab*se but he turns a blind eye. I didn't understand why he was such an ass when he actually cares about her. It only became apparent towards the end:

Spoiler

OMG HE LIKES HER. Like, why young duke? You're the worst.

[collapse]

People kept saying that Eclise is like a little puppy that was caught in Penelope's web.
Spoiler

However, they will never work. Eclise is a prince of a fallen country and he initially thought of escape. However, he fell madly in love with the MC and there was no turning back for him. He became a full-on yandere, it was so scary. O_O

[collapse]

Vinter

Spoiler

was a great candidate at first. But gahd. He didn't trust the MC and he even tested her which led to really bad things happening in the end. If you didn't need to test her, there was no opportunity for Leila to brainwash Raon, you punk.

[collapse]

Crown Prince

Spoiler

Now, the crown prince is pretty awesome. In the beginning, I didn't really understand how they'd work. However, he was the only one who trusted the MC unconditionally. He didn't care for the rumors or her reputation. He didn't love her yet but trusting her the way he did when everyone around her just hurts her, he is so the ML.

[collapse]

There is so much drama as you see things from the perspective of the MC and she is so broken. :' (But the ML will help her heal her heart and allow her to live her dream. ≪3 <<less

So this novel really made me emotional. As someone who sympathize with Penelope’s background and her overall character, I really do adore all her flaws and her struggles as a hated villainess. Now as for the male leads... Penelope has really good points when they argue and it is quite satisfying when reading. It really isn’t obvious as to who the main male lead is but as to the story hinting at it, it is quite low key as to who it is. As to the story progressing so far,... more>> it is fair to each male leads with the percentage of favorability. The story really hooks you in with all the mysteries it gives and for me as a reader I really can’t put my phone down even in a second. So I really highly recommend you this novel and at least give it a try. <<less

My #1 villainous MC novel.....I just love the MC. Unlike other 'transmigration into a game ' novels this one is quite different. The MC has suffered so much I really want her to reach a happy end soon. It can make you move and sympathize with the MC so much during some chapters.... I don't know how many hate comments to that s*upid brother i've already given on different websites, although he'll improve later (still no regrets cz he deserved those comments!!!) . It's worth it.... go ahead and enjoy... more>> this amazing novel ! <<less

Drama. Drama everywhere huhu.

The story is great. The side of how a villainess is made. It really hurt.

Can't wait for the development of the story.

I especially made an account so I can leave this review

This story stands out from the rest of reincarnation/ otome game story. Rather than a romance drama story, this is more like thrilling psychology one, and I like it.

The main protagonist is not your ordinary main. She is determined to keep her neck intact and stay committed to that. She's no saint tho, where she would blindly believe in everyone who is nice to her. Death is in every corner and it does take toll on the poor girl. I... more>> think at one point she admit that it makes her paranoid.

Even until chapter 33 I still can't tell who the main male is.

I sympathize with her, cuz she actually weeps at the fact that she has to deny her true feelings in order to curry favour from the male targets. And boy, all the things she does to keep her head attached.

I hope it gets translated smoothly. So far the translation is going great. <<less

I am forever waiting for updates because I can't seem to MTL the raws, how sad. But knowing that the translations are great, waiting is a pleasure. Yes, indeed it is another of those cliche villainess novels but that's the reason why I'm even reading this, lmao.

I love how much of a slow burn it is, but considering that the MC is at hard mode, and is doing her very best to survive, I guess it is only the most logical pattern to follow. A system is also attached to... more>> her, hence makes it more bound to rules. What I love is that she's not completely OP. I enjoyed all her interactions with the capture targets, because as you see, the response isn't what you would expect. <<less

There's a lovely story hiding in here, I'm sure; one of pain, and retribution, and grim satisfaction.

Towel City's translation, however, is absolute dreck. From the first chapter it appears passable, if frequently frustrating due to failures in basic grammar. Enjoy it while it lasts. It's as good as it gets.

Never mind any notion of consistency in tone, as that is the least of its various issues. Whole segments are excised, vital scenes vanish into thin air. The language deteriorates into nonsense a scant third of the way through, by my... more>> reckoning. It is machine translation at its worst and most soulless, an unremitted assault on English, on Korean, and on good storytelling at large.

Run, don't walk, from this interpretation, and wait for Yen Press to do the job. <<less

Most of these reviews are like the same person in different clothes lol.

The only valid arguements I found are about:

- Bad character development

... more>> - Penelope not being held accountable.

There are some arguements about her being too cruel on the others and expecting sincerity when she's not sincere. But when will you realise that if she doesn't bite first she'll get bitten? She was treated like tr*sh the entire time before, right from her childhood so how is it her fault she has a completely shitty personality when she had no one to correct her. In anything. So it's completely understandable that the current Penny justifies her behaviour, she sees her past self in Penelope.

There are also complaints about her being too manipulative BUT. She's supposed to be a villain, it's in the title incase you missed it, literally everything she did before HAD to be calculated or my girl would've lost her head. I think we're a bit too used to female leads just getting close to the MLs without much effort despite the death flags that's why this is unusual where a fork is a death flag. Every male lead us a walking catastrophe, she's not safe I'm her house, hell even her room ffs. But the main issue is, this wouldn't be brought up if it was a male MC because they can be as shitty as they want in the name of revenge and it's always justified. I think she can do her revenge as she sees fit because she understands her situation the best and nobody else can understand anything she went through like herself.

.

.

.

I grandly agree with the no character development part because she's not changed even a bit from how she was at the start, but just by itself that's not a valid point to give the novel a one star.

I rest my case. <<less

It's my first time writing a review and definitely not an English speaker, so forgive me with the grammatical errors.

This is actually the first Korean novel that I read and I find it very very promising so I skimmed the first few chapter and immediately got hooked. I personally love the MC, I don't why many people are hating her but everyone's opinion is different.

I find it realistic where the MC is kinda cold-hearted at first coz' with all the things she experienced, it's somehow reasonable why she ought... more>> to act that way. A child who suffered from ab*se is not something to be taken lightly off. Everyone should understand that the MC did suffer from an abusive environment and IS NEGLECTED from her adopted family.

The first translator did a very good job translating the first few chapter but the second translation just suck. I forgot what chapter the 2nd trans started but I really couldn't go on reading since it's just that horrible. I hope someone picks this up again and share this brilliant novel. <<less

1 start.

Pretty sure there’re plenty of comments explaining why this novel isn’t worth reading.

Just gonna point out that the female lead got away with being the worst type of person ever. Only because her reasons are more “understandable” than others.

... more>> Not to mention those comments that defend her manipulative and childish behavior by saying “Oh! You would do the same if you were in her place!”🙄

And honestly, a character being manipulative was never the problem in the first place.

Penelope is just written badly and lacks actual character development. The only thing the author put effort into building her character is the “tragic” backstory and more excuses.

Overall, this novel deserves a 4-star for the story and the majority of its characters.

Too bad the worst character that ruins it all is actually the most important one.

The female lead, herself! <<less

Story is 5/5, but the translation and translator's note/reaction ruins it for me.

It like more darker and drama focus version of My Next Life as a Villainess. The consequences for every interaction is death, unlike My Next Life as a Villainess where it happens at the end. Sadly, this death consequence eventually fades away, but the MC and characters continues to hold up.

Sadly, the translation is poor and confusing. The sentences aren't making sense and I can't really follow what's going on sometimes. Still I keep reading to find out... more>> what's going to happen next, but then the translator's notes came. I appreciate the fan translations and all the work with no reward is admirable, but I got annoyed with the translator inserting their opinions and reactions in between. It felt like watching a movie and your friend is reacting out loud every 5 minutes with "OMG!", "Of course he did", "I hate him". It gotten too annoying so I just googled the ending instead on continuing to read.

Spoiler to ending in case you're in the same situation.

Spoiler

MC replaces real Penelope because resetting the game too much "killed" her soul.

Winter was suppose to bring back Ivonne, the heroine and real sister of Derrick and Reynold, but Eckles brought Ivonne back instead and betrayed Penelope. However, Eckles is still unstably in love with Penelope and just wanted Penelope to get kicked out and rely on him more. I think Eckles dies trying to protect Penelope from something.

Ivonne turns out to be evil, as she is possessed, and able to manipulate everyone to go against Penelope; Duke, Derrick, and Reynold. Ivonne's manipulation didn't affect Callisto. Callisto has a civil won for the throne and won. Penelope ends up with Callisto. She chose him over returning to her world, which kills her world's body that's in a coma.

I don't know how or if they beat Ivonne, but above is the gist I was able to find.

PLEASE for the love of god stop reviewing novels when you've read like 4 chapters. (I wont speak on the translation but if I remember correctly, after the Banquet arc and the Cave arc there isnt many, if any, missing pieces, so if you're coming from the Manhwa you can try and just skim to there.) (Also obviously there are times when early reviews are ok, such as like "this author basically writes r*pe p*rn, or excuses that kind of behavior, that I understand. This author does NOT... more>> do that.)

This novel is definitely a heart wrencher, but, imo, you'll feel angry more often than sad. I normally stay away from any and all angst, so for me to be able to read this says something. This book is a phenomenal read.

This next part will contain some mild spoilers (such as who is the actual ML in case you havent spoiled yourself that yet, and a little bit of my opinion on how the book ends pre extras, which I havent caught up on.)

Spoiler

The only excusable ones actions in the novel is Kallisto and I guess maybe the Mage (iirc the mage overall didnt end up doing much to her, but he probably still did something to make me dislike him). While Kallistos actions in the beginning were extremely harsh, there ARE reasons for it, like genuine reasons (have to remember hes a prince and doesnt know a damn thing about her in the beginning). Although he doesnt directly apologize for it, his attitude towards her changes over time as he gets to know her. F*ck the brothers, f*ck the dad, f*ck everyone else.

If you're looking for them to die, sadly, as of the end of the novel before extras, they don't. I truly wished they did, but alas we can't all get what we want. HOWEVER! However, none of them get "redeemed" besides maybe Kallisto. They're all still dickheads in Penelopes mind and heart, and that's what they'll forever be. Do not worry.

Some if you may disagree with my take on Kallisto, and that's ok, I understand that. But I just think given the context I know from reading the novel, his actions were the most reasonable, and the "most forgivable" of the bunch.

[collapse]

Sorry for the mini Essay, I'm just so tired of seeing people review this novel and other novels and not give credit where credit is due.

Also, if the spoiler part is a little incoherent, I tried revealing as little as possible while giving my opinion. It has been awhile since I've read the novel. I just, couldn't take it seeing so many review the translation basically instead of the actual novel.

Edit: Extra spoiler about a certain character (dont read unless you want to see a mini rant that does contain a pretty big spoiler) :

Spoiler

All this simping for Eclise needs to stop, it really does. Out of all the characters, she treated him the best for the most part. If he really wanted freedom, he could've gotten it from her pretty fast, and she wouldve just continued on her way to find a different path. She already showed that. Eclise had the best treatment possible for a sl*ve, and had a chance early on to get away, and he didnt. So for him to turn around and betray her, is inexcusable. It's not like she ab*sed him at all, besides not loving him back. But the way he loved her was a crazy psycho way anyways? There really is no excuse for his behavior. That betrayal was just, way too much. Hes the one I wish died the most.

As for the story, I thought it had great potential. Super interesting in some places and a bit slow in others, but overall a good story.

However, the translation is a completely different thing. It's almost unreadable in certain chapters. The translator changed an uncountable number of times and while some were ok, a lot were down right terrible. You have to be very patient and seeking to guess sometimes to make it through some chapters.

This is a great novel to read if you are not bothered by MC's cynicism and I have just spend a week binge reading it.

MC is fed up off the word, both of them and I can understand her attitude so it did not bother me at all and I think that most most of the negative reviews were just disappointed people who hoped that she would turn around completely and become kind holy mother Mary Sue or something like that...

Overall solid read. Translation is a little iffy sometimes but... more>> it didn't bother with immersion that much.

MC is a bitter pessimist and can irritate some people, I however only found her irritating after the hard mode game over, when she was still overly fixated on the lack off game favourability mechanic's.

The heroine aka the real villainess was a great psycho but she was killed off perhaps a bit too easily.

I like it how all the male leads got a fitting ending and I also like it how MC got the chance to personally end her matters in her previous world. Proper ending for novel for once! That I appreciate a lot. <<less

It's a really great story, my no.1 favourite actually.

IMO I don't think this story is that bad actually. I don't get why the negative comments because tbh for me at least, Penelope sounds like a pretty realistic character that uses common sense I guess.

I mean, she acted distant towards others and doesn't really let others in easily. Why? Because she knew everything was just a game and in the end she'd still go back after completing 'the game'. It's better not to get attached to others if you know you'd... more>> leave them anyway.// That is, if you look in a logical way ofc, if you look at the emotion part it's kinda not fair but hey, she did all those distancing for survival too.

Also can you really blame a girl who had never receive affection other than from her

mother that died when she was young?

I also like that she gets along with the main male lead. Well not really, but their relationship is very cute I want one.

Callisto and Penelope go well with each other because amongst all the mls they resonate with each other most, like they know and could feel about each other's pain. Both of them had their mothers died when they were young, both were hated and neglected by their family. Obviously they never really receive love from anyone so they are a perfect pair to heal each other's wound.

For me, Callisto is my favourite male lead because

despite his mean nature, he was actually a very nice guy (mostly towards Penelope) and you might even find his personality endearing. I legit cried for a solid 5 mins at chapter 230 when he was dying lol.

To be honest, those who left negative reviews when they haven't even finish the novel they were reviewing are not fair and even rude to the author. Like, you didn't even give the story a chance, straight up dump it cuz it didn't match your taste and leave bad reviews for it. You don't know, maybe you'll actually find it to be interesting if you finish it till the end. <<less
