“I must die for Ki Baek-woo.

Ki Baek-woo, whom I loved more than life itself. And Jung Yi-dam, Baek-woo’s new love.

I die for this.

Because this world has already been determined that way.

This is inside a boys’ love simulation game where Jung Yi-dam is the protagonist.

As a mere supporting character, I have no choice.

I can only repeat death and regression, loving, loving, and loving Baek-woo until my heart wears out and disappears from exhaustion.”

“Hyung, please forgive me just this once. I’m nothing without you… You know that better than anyone.”

But why is Ki Baek-woo suddenly clinging to me now?

“Finally…! How long I’ve waited for a day like this!”

And Jung Yi-dam, this world’s protagonist, who suddenly appears before me speaking strange words.

What am I supposed to do now?

So far it's an excellent depiction of the struggles of ending a long-term codependent relationship. The only issue so far is that the timeline is a little off.

The setting is that MC is on his 25th-ish life and reflecting on how his relationship deteriorated. ~15 years ago gates appeared everywhere and both MC and Baek-woo lost their parents. At the time they were 10 and 7 respectively. They derived strength from each others' company, MC awakens earlier and works to provide for them both. Eventually Baek-woo confesses and they get... more>> together.

Every time he regresses to the day after Baek-woo and Yi-dam kiss for the first time. Every time before he'd try his best to heartbreaking results because no matter what he did, Baek-woo would always leave him not giving a single sh*t about MC's death after they break up. Because this is a dating sim and everyone but the protagonist's and the leads' lives do not matter. All just set-dressing for the game.

Honestly based on how much pain he's caused I'd rather MC just f*ck off and find a family who cares about him outside a romantic relationship. So based on how it goes and considering the synopsis I might just drop it and write fanfic at some point. <<less

As someone who loves angst, unrequited love and wife chasing I have to admit this one ticks all of my boxes. It's easy to emphatize with the MC right off the bat. He is hurt and heartbroken and has gone through so much that you can't help to side with him almost immediately. He is smart and incredibly hasn't gone insane after dying 25 times, losing the love of his life in every single one. I actually cried reading what happened to him.

The ML is hard to explain. I was... more>> suspicious of him as everything we get is the MC's perspective and he does NOT look good in it, but a lot of the novel is plagued with flashbacks that make it really hard to reconcile the ML MC fell in love with, with the one in MC's tragic past. He clearly loved the MC in those memories, and the harsh contrast with how he ends up treating his hyung (MC) in every life is startling, so much so that it feels almost incoherent or like he is a diferent person.

When I was reading I started to notice the little hints the author was dropping regarding the twist, but it still didn't prepare me for the whole extend of the issue.

Spoiler

I knew the ML couldn't be irredeemable since his love for the MC didn't feel fake at any point in the story so far, and I just knew there had to be a reason he ended up acting that way AND I WAS RIGHT. To put it simply, he loved the MC so much that the only way the system could force him to "love" someone else, was by ERASING MC FROM HIS MEMORY. After his hyung (MC) died and the story reached the end, he would "wake up" since he wouldn't be in control of the system anymore, and remember most of what happened, ultimately realizing that the love of his life died for him while he was watching in cold blood. Naturally in all the lives where MC died (which were way more than 25), ML commited su*cide right after remembering what happened because he couldn't live without him. Its all Jung Yi Dam's fault btw and the reason is so fuc*ed up I cant even muster up the words to explain.

[collapse]

This story makes the ML go through the most, which considering all that happened to the MC, can feel as not enough. If you have read other stories and felt dissatisfied with how little groveling there was, this is not that kind of story. There IS groveling, and its hard to read. I have to admit though, that I did feel bad for the ML at a certain point

Spoiler

Which, considering the actual reason he treated MC like tr*sh in the past, is that he couldn't even remember him and was forced by the system, makes all of this SO heartbreaking. At the end of the day NONE of them deserved what happened to them, and is devastating to realize that the MC is punishing the ML so harshly, when he didn't even want to cheat in the first place.

Its also hard to feel that you cant deny him the revenge he so desperately seeks, after dying and feeling betrayed by the person he loved most in the world, not even knowing it wasn't his decision. You feel he has the right, but at the same time you ARE NOT PREPARED to how it will all feel after knowing the truth. It. So. Hard.

[collapse]

As others have commented, I do have to admit that my biggest problem with this novel is the fact that most of it consists of flashbacks and reiterations about how much the MC hates the ML. I had to skip entire chapters because I didn't feel like I could keep reading the same things over and over again. However, this wasn't unbearable and it could also have to do with the fact that I was reading this way too late at night so I was sleepy.

Something that I think some people could find annoying is how much of an unreliable narrator the MC is. He IS an unreliable narrator. He will misjudge his own appearance, his relationships with others, the ML and even the world at a certain point. Please bear with it. It is worth it, or at least for me it has been.

Spoiler

I'm really hoping for a happy ending, but after all the damage that has been done to their bond, I hope they resolve it in a healthy way. The fact that they always ended up together before the f*cker interfereance, makes everything so devastating. They were going to end together, they always did. They loved each other truly, and in normal circumstances: the ML would have NEVER EVER cheated. They have hurt each other so much and for what? For nothing. ITS NOT EVEN THEIR FAULT. I'm so sad.

[collapse]

Trigger warnings that I think are necessary to know about:

Graphic descriptions of death, su*cide and self-harm, mentions of eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, graphic depiction of depression, mentions of blood and bodily harm, domestic violence, agorophobia, codepency, mu*der, attempted mu*der, suicidal ideas, threats and violence.

Also implied r*pe? (Not between the main couple) because:

Spoiler

Since the ML's is under the system's control he can't consent to anything that happens to him, including any s*xual activity with Jung Yi Dam or any demonstration of affection. There is a chapter where we get the perspective of the ML on his first kiss with Jung Yi Dam and its so obvious and sad how he is not in control of himself and how disgusted he feels by the situation and even himself. The way he keeps asking for his hyung (MC) to save him, when we KNOW what's gonna happen right after is heartbreaking.

[collapse]

Personally, it wasn't so hard for me to read this novel even considering the trigger warnings, but it could be hard to read for people that have had experience on those topics.

Finally, I have to admit I love this novel so far. Really hoping for a happy ending.

The main couple REALLY deserves it. <<less

Interesting, but poor pacing, repetition, and the lack of world building make it a chore to read. I was astonished that it took nearly 70 chapters for the actual story to start. Before Jung Yi Dam shows up like it says in the description, all the previous chapters are basically flashbacks to establish Han-sol's suffering or repetitive interactions between present Han-sol and Baek-woo. If done well I think Yi Dam's introduction would feel like a twist, but instead it makes everything before feel like filler. It doesn't help that except... more>> for Han-sol none of the characters are very interesting or compelling. Baek-woo's personality is entirely one note, Yi Dam has only shown up once to exposition dump and act crazy, Han-sol's group of "friends" are a bunch of totally indistinct brain dead NPCs, and Yi Dam's other love interests are practically non-existent. The whole story world feels strangely empty.

So far, it's not a crematorium.

Spoiler

Jung Yi Dam's love interests are brainwashed by the system to complete the story. So Baek-woo has never willingly cheated on or betrayed Han-sol. This doesn't invalidate Han-sol's suffering, but the perpetrators are clearly Yi Dam and the system, not Baek-woo. Yi Dam says Baek-woo's love is fake because it wasn't powerful enough to overcome the system control, but this is kind of like a butcher saying the pigs he kills died because their will to live wasn't strong enough.

[collapse]

There's probably no pay off, or at least it's hard for me to see what the pay off will be.

Spoiler

Because it's not a crematorium, things aren't going to be fixed by Baek-woo paying a blood debt to Han-sol. At this point, Han-sol's mental state probably can't be restored even if he spent a lifetime in therapy and Baek-woo probably won't be looking very hot after, predictably, his memories of the past lives return. So, will I be satisfied even if they free themselves from the control of the system and exit the time loop? What's the point? It's like a person wrongly confined to a mental hospital escaping after they've been lobotomized. Personally, I don't enjoy stories about pointless suffering. If there's no catharsis I'm out, and I'll be very surprised if the ending of this is emotionally satisfying.

Unless I'm missing something, the ML's greatest sin seems to be a lack of free will, which isn't exactly his fault. In the past timelines as soon as the rival love interest shows up, a switch just turns off inside the ML and he goes from adoring the MC to a state of total indifference/dislike.

And while it's totally reasonable for the MC to preemptively break up with the ML in the newest timeline, there's little reader satisfaction in an ML chasing the MC when he has no idea why the... more>> MC left in the first place.

I would prefer to read fewer scenes where the main character internally monologues his dislike of the ML, and instead read more about wtf is going on or what the big picture is. <<less

ML has this switch that he is destined with jung yi dam. Well those two are the main characters of the story. Thats how the story sets in every timelime. Though I still find it hard to forgive him. More than that I can't seem to like the MC cause he could not even bring himself to kick him out /move out himself. He is just dragging with the thought of moving out. Its just that he spouts about affairs, betrayal, etc to make the ML feel like sh*t but... more>> cares for the ML cause everytime baek woo passes out or hes feeling sick he is always taking care of him.

  1. Just call jung yi dam and let him drag baek woo out of the house.
I hope the redemption arc would be really really long and also a side character would be good.🤣I do love the story hoping that it would give me the satisfaction at the end. <<less
