It’s about planes landing on the ground, and also about love descending into the heart.

Gentle yet domineering star pilot x a bit stubborn and principle-driven air traffic controller

Chen Jiayu x Fang Hao

Three years ago, Chen Jiayu piloted Flight 416 during a severe engine incident, maneuvering an Airbus A330 full of passengers to a safe landing on the longest runway at Hong Kong International Airport with harrowing speed.

Known as the most successful crash landing in civil aviation history in a decade, his achievement made him a household name, but it also became a nightmare that haunted him for years. He thought that he had used up all his good luck in Hong Kong three years ago. Then, he met Fang Hao.

Fang Hao, who likes to be in control and holds the record for directing the most flights in a single hour at Daxing Airport, handling countless special and risky situations without batting an eye. However, upon encountering Chen Jiayu, he found himself losing control.

Where do I even begin?

I've been reading danmei for the past five years, and this is the first time I've ever felt compelled to write a review—because this story is just that good.

This isn't your typical danmei. The characters aren't two-dimensional; they're flawed, vulnerable, and deeply human in a way that makes them perfect for each other. Fang Hao is charmingly lovable. He's confident, meticulous, and borderline obsessive about certainty. But Chen Jiayu softens him. With Chen Jiayu, he becomes patient, flexible, and willing to toss his usual non-negotiables out... more>> the window. The way they argue and bicker is refreshingly real, it's mature, nuanced, and deeply relatable. If you've ever been in a long-term relationship, you'll likely find yourself nodding along, thinking, Yes, we've fought like that too.

No relationship is without baggage. Most of us carry past wounds into love, and this story doesn't shy away from that truth. It gently explores what it means to choose someone despite, and because of, their history. It's about the slow, often messy process of compromise, growth, and learning to love someone not in spite of their imperfections, but because of them.

I don't think I'll find another danmei quite like this. The pacing is masterful: a delicate balance of slice-of-life storytelling, emotionally-charged moments, and just the right amount of spice. Yes, there are a lot of steamy scenes—but they never feel gratuitous. Instead, they're so deeply entwined with the characters' emotional arcs that they feel necessary and raw.

Someone said this novel reads like Four O'Clock Flower, and I wholeheartedly agree. They're different stories, but both wrap you up like a warm blanket on a rainy day—and once the rain stops, you're left not wanting to let go.

Oh and can I just say the translation was outstanding. I was so impressed, I ended up sending the translator a Ko-fi. Considering how much technical aerospace and aviation jargon there was, she clearly put in a ton of research. She even included photos in some chapters for added context. That goes far beyond just translating.

If anyone out there has a recommendation that hits the same notes... please, I beg you, have mercy and message me. <<less

one of the reviews said its up there with Four o'clock Flower and I couldnt agree more. I love reading about mature and realistic love stories. I love the themes of fate and serendipity between the two and the author did a great job of writing the airplane scenes (i was screaming while reading about the emergencies) and I also want to commend the job well done the translator did with this!

This is easily one of the best novels I've read all year, which was completely unexpected given how it's about a pilot and air traffic controller, two professions I came in with no interest in and knew nothing about. The author clearly did a lot of research and provided many real life cases, which helped a lot with putting into context the immense stress and potential dangers of the protagonists' careers. I definitely came out of this with such a new respect and understanding especially for air traffic controllers.

Both protagonists... more>> are in their 30s for the majority of the novel (30 and 33), and their maturity is clear in how they're able to communicate and individually process their past traumas. They aren't a fairytale perfect couple and actually have to work to understand and connect with each other. There's no unrealistic mind reading, and they both take steps to compromise with and grow together after arguments.

The buildup to their feelings for each other is very natural and believable, and there's no excessively drawn out misunderstandings or avoidance. They get together relatively early on in the novel, but it takes until almost the end for them to really feel like they've developed a stable and lasting relationship. Throughout the story, they have many arguments, but they don't get caught up on misunderstandings or put on dramatics around each other.

POV is equally shared between the two protagonists, so their inner anxieties and thoughts are clear to the reader, helping provide reasoning behind the ways that they interact. Both have their own insecurities and traumas to work through, and it takes time and effort for them to find a balance and to fully trust each other. The end of their story is so much more touching after knowing how much they both worked to reach such harmony, and I loved the poetic way in which they shared their love for each other.

Despite this being primarily a slice of life romance novel, there's a few very intense action sequences due to their stressful professions, and I even shed some psychological tears from the intensity of the writing. The smut scenes are also some of the best I've read, though I will call out that despite them technically being reversible couple
Spoiler

they actually only switch roles once in the entire novel during one emotionally charged scene, while the rest of the time Chen Jiayu is the top

[collapse]

Also, Chen Jiayu is bis*xual and (generally) out about it, which I find to be a rarity in danmei! Another minor note as there are multiple translations going on, but I found Eagle Grass's TL to flow a bit better grammatically, and their phrasing choices were a bit more poetic and fluid. Hoping for an official Eng TL though, this novel definitely deserves it! (The audio drama was so good too, recommended if you understand Chinese!!) <<less

The author has amazingly and painstakingly analyzed the work of pilots and air traffic controllers, this is a very interesting novel! The main couple is lively, not ideal, but that's what makes them attractive. I prefer the side pair, the author also has a short story about them

Likely one of the best romance novels there is to offer. This story revolves around realism: the extensive details about the stresses, pressures, and joys of the piloting and controller careers, the company politics and power abusing executives, the pain and desolation of losing a loved one, the trauma and suffering behind the “heroes” of a plane accident, the warmth and helplessness that comes from family ties, the arguments and friction from two grown adults attempting to love while scarred from their pasts. The realism is what makes this story... more>> stand out, and at the same time it’s also what makes me unfortunately not want to reread this again.

A rare novel where there’s actual smut. The s*x scenes are written in great detail, which I raise both hands in appreciation, but sometimes I felt like the words they spoke during the scenes felt really cheesy. Though maybe that’s just how it goes when they’re caught up in the passion of the moment. There are many ups and downs in the course of our main characters relationship. By virtue of their personalities, our pilot gong recognizes his love first and acts on it without hesitation. Our controller shou is much more steady, reserved, and cautious, so it takes him much longer to come around, but his affection and attachment are obvious to basically everyone. The arguments they have are logical, inevitable problems that result from two completely different adults trying to merge their lives. The friends they meet along the way also have their own troubles and joys, though we don’t see too much detail about them. Overall an extremely beautifully written story, with wonderful translations. <<less

This novel was very pleasant to read.

The chemistry between CJY and FH was amazing, they complement each other very well. Where CJY is a bit impulsive and a romantic at heart, FH is calm and collected.

Cjy has a hectic life and needs someone to ground him, give him a sense of belonging, whereas FH is a bit distrustful due to past scars and slow to open up. Someone like CJY is perfect to bring him out of his shell.

The novel is very well written and the author did their homework... more>> on aviation and regulations very thoroughly, hence it's easy follow, without the headache of deal with improper twists just to fit the plot.

You'll really like it if you want to see a love story of two regular guys, doing regular jobs, falling in love and navigating through their daily life.

If you're overwhelmed or exhausted after going through a rollercoaster kind of read, you'll love this medium-paced, slice of life short novel.

From what I know, this is the author's first work, and is officially available on gongicp publications for free. So please show the author lots of love <<less

A heart-wrenching masterpiece.

This is up there along with 《Four O’clock flower》《Drink, drank, drunk》 - You know? Exactly.

This story isn’t about how these two fell in love- it’s what happens after, it’s very deep and painful but also happy and fulfilling, either way, this is how love should be.

... more>> Fulfilling and complete.

Some may not be able to understand why Fang Hao or Jiayu took certain actions, which is why I’d say this novel is so intricate, each and every action holds a little meaning behind it, for why and what, for readers who want to analyze, this is the perfect book for you, and later, you can even check if your analysis is correct~

Fang Hao and Chen Jiayu are both people who’ve experienced many things in their lives that we can’t simply define in a few words, they don’t have fixed personalities that remain the same till the end, they’re constantly growing to love themselves and the other- to trust and to compromise.

I especially love this story because this is one of my favorite topics when it comes to love- accommodation and compromise. Love isn’t possible without compromise, you can’t ever think ‘I don’t want the other to change..’ because change is what smooths out the edges for you to fit into each other perfectly- you don’t need to compromise on your principles, but you need to diffract them.. (I’m a stem student haha)

It’s a beautiful love story, I’ll definitely miss them. They’re going to be up there, one flying planes one commanding haha.

— Just some character analysis I made while reading.

Spoiler

Fang Hao once again, is a person with a very strong desire for control. He can’t bet on things he isn’t sure on- relationships especially. I do not know how he was with his ex so I may not be able to accurately analyze him but considering him coming out to his parents, getting angry on his ex’s behalf we can see his strong sense of protection and trust in his ex, for the first time he had left a part of his control to a man he wanted to have forever with, only for his trust to be completely broken. Now, the key point here is, Fang Hao isn’t exactly flipping out because of Chen Jiayu’s accident exactly, but due to it’s implications. Fang Hao has a contradicting nature. He wants Chen Jiayu to rely on him and to also have his own sense of self instead of doing whatever Fang Hao wants but this is only to a certain limit that FH himself has set. Beyond this limit, it’s gone to the stage wherein it affects their ‘relationship’ and everything’s out of control, something he fears. What further exemplifies this is that if Jiayu listened to him, the situation wouldn’t have escalated to this severity. It gives Fang Hao the notion that if the control isn’t in his hands, things will be dire. What he doesn’t understand is his desire to control stems purely from his lack of trust in Jiayu’s way of living and their future together, he can’t let loose and he’s constantly projecting onto Jiayu. Fang Hao is the one who can’t separate work and life but he constantly berates Jiayu on it because it comforts him. Fang Hao needs to let go and leave control to Jiayu too. Like he said. They’re an item, they’re both in control.

[collapse]

P.S - they’re not a verse couple. Fang Hao is the bottom and Chen Jiayu is the top, it’s just that they don’t have concrete roles. Both are 0.5. Fang Hao tops Jiayu once. <<less

It's cute. I love the plot. I am becoming knowledgeable a bit about aviation related stuff since I started to read this. I'll definitely read this again soon! I'm doing a review so I can keep track where I left off and I can exit and delete my hundreds open tab on my Google Chrome. It's turning laggy. I'll edit my review once I finish reading this.

Did some binge reading as the story trapped me.

Quick summary would be: 2 men meet, sh*t happens, they grow their differences, HE.

But there is more. The characters are fleshed out, 3 dimensional, with distinct personalities, actions and choices. You can feel how they evolve, how they learn, why they do the things they do. The romance is slow and fast, doubtful and fierce, passionate and warm, all of it. Not much smut, but it delightful to read, the s*x reeks of love and respect.

The whole story has a nice pace,... more>> not slow, not fast. The airport and plane environment is not boring, the author made it light enough for a profane to understand and enjoy.

Probably one of the best yaoi online novels I have read in years. <<less

5 stars

I love the mature characters in this story. At first I was hesitant that it would be a bit boring but it wasn't. There was enough plot and the characters truly made the story shine. There weren't any big plot or action but it's a love story at the core and I really enjoyed it. There's also just something really attractive about people being competent at their jobs.

I kind of wanted more of the side couple story and their journey as well.

Also, I was just disappointed in ... more>>

the reversible tag. There was 1 switch scene and that was it. Otherwise the positions were pretty fixed. However, there is very good dynamics in their relationship as it felt very balanced compared to most other BL novels.

Overall this was an enjoyable modern read grounded in reality. <<less
