Zhong Yuntong was a dog raised by Zhong Jin in her previous life, quite literally a dog.

She was a Celestial Cloud Demon Dog, and her father was the villainous Demon Lord from a novel, known for his ruthlessness and cunning, someone everyone wanted to eliminate.

Little Tongtong, the puppy, was unaware of the turmoil outside, living a life of luxury with her villainous father, spoiled to the point of being unruly.

When the demon clan was destroyed, Zhong Yuntong transformed into the form of a human child. Using her powerful sense of smell, she found her father, who was still as wise and formidable as ever, instilling fear in everyone.

However, now everyone referred to him not as “Lord” but as “Director.”

* * *

A little child, around three or four years old, arrived at the An District Police Station. She was exquisitely beautiful, dressed in a fragrant cloud silk jacket and embroidered tiger-head shoes, clearly a well-cared-for child from a wealthy family.

The child tiptoed, clinging to the edge of the inquiry desk, and loudly asked, “Excuse me, is my father here?”

The female police officer smiled, “Little friend, who is your father?”

“Zhong Jin.”

Director Zhong Jin heard about this and was indifferent, thinking, “Just a child talking nonsense, we should find her parents quickly.”

Two days later, Officer Wang handed the child over to the director, saying, “She’s your biological child.”

Director Zhong, “……”

Zhong Yuntong tugged at her father’s pant leg and said, “I want to eat crispy-skinned chicken.”

Director Zhong, “……? Crispy… fried chicken?”

Officer Wang, who understood this, confirmed, “There’s no doubt she’s your biological child.”

A paternity test sent Director Zhong down the irreversible path of parenting, and after two months of chaotic child-rearing, the station received a report of a missing child, with a description that matched Zhong Yuntong perfectly.

Zhong Jin remarked, “A scam call to the police station? What a genius.”

The next day, the scammer arrived at the station.

Zhong Jin, “……” The scam genius turned out to be his ex-wife.

Very cute Slice of Life story about child raising

The melon eating in the title has to do with how nosy the little girl is when she visits her father at the police station. She enjoys the drama of the booking area and also when the officers mediate family issues. If there is anything extremely unrealistic in the novel it is how much access the little girl has at the police station, she seems to be welcome everywhere

Another reviewer mentioned that the author portrayed female children as better behaved than male... more>> and that women's child rearing is more meticulous than men's and I did not find this to be the case. The girl was very mischievous and the father also contrasted his daughter with a colleague's daughter who did not have good manners and refused to eat

The father read several parenting books and did all the cooking and cleaning. He had more patience with the child than the mother, who got annoyed several times because the child needed attention. This wasn't portrayed in a negative way, it was because the mother worked from home and needed time to do her job

The romance between the parents also made sense. They did not get divorced because they hated each other, both the mother and father had separate issues which made them believe leaving the relationship was the best thing to do for the other person. As weird as it seems they divorced because they loved each other and neither wanted to become a burden to the other

I am glad the story ended while the child was still young and didn't follow her into adulthood

The translation did have some issues, several times the father's gender was incorrect which was confusing. The names were also mixed up a couple of times. Also, the child was using words incorrectly, but the translated words were the same. For instance "it's not something, say something instead". It was a bit annoying

i am giving it 5 stars because I enjoyed the novel very much

I highly recommend this novel if you like cute children or Slice of Life or slow burn romance novels. It hits well on each of these points <<less

I had to drop this at chapter 46, around the time the ex-wife came into the picture, because too me if feels so forced to bring them back together for the sake of the child. The dreams of past life felt so lazy and just thrown in there to force a connection between Qiu Sheng and Yuntong. Perhaps if they hadn't been divorced already or if there weren't signs of them getting back together eventually, it wouldn't have mattered. But the author using the child as a bridge to repair... more>> their relationship was such a turn-off for me.

I thought I was going to be reading a story of a clueless dad and unexpected daughter building their own happy family, but in the end, what I'm seeing is the traditional concept of a family (mom, dad, child) being pushed. It was kind of a letdown, since the setting had potential.

Not to mention, there have been some small things that just felt off. Like how it's implied that female children are naturally more well-behaved than male children, and how women's parenting instincts are just so much more meticulous than men's. It's playing into sexist stereotypes that low-key ruined the atmosphere for me. <<less

It's honestly such an enjoyable book. Unfortunately, I was unable to MTL the extras and will have to wait for the translators to finish it.

The child is actually like a child! Not those over smart kids shown in other books.

Yes, it's not all about eating melons, but even without it, it's quite an enjoyable read.

Our MC is a demon dog being raised by the Demon Lord and his wife. Once the Demon Clan is destroyed, she flies over to the human world to look for her 'dad'.

Spoiler

Because MC was given blood by the Demon Lord and his wife, she becomes their bio kid.

[collapse]

Our MC is just an innocent child and some of the things she does and says is absolutely hilarious and/or creepy.
Spoiler

Her chicken in crispy clothes and scaring her uncle into running away with her late night patrols, she embodies everything funny and creepy things that children do.

She has adventures in the police station and becomes 'one of them'.

Protests against going to school like any other kid out there.

Helps out a shy, disabled kid by treating her like normal.

She also does things dogs do like empathizing with her dad and mom when they are sad, her sleeping position, nightly patrols and fascination with critters.

They only 'bad guy' here is her maternal grandpa who I would love to see get his retribution for all the things he's put his family through.

It's such a fell-good story that it gets you laughing and fell happy. This is truly a wonderful book that's worth a read. <<less

all I can say is that I had too much expectation for the novel only to end up being greatly disappointed with the story.

i only read up to half way and decided to stop with how boring this novel is.

novel had nothing to do with eating "melon" at the police station. title is misleading as it has nothing to do with "eating melon" besides that fact that MC's dad work there and that she goes to the station a lot.

the "eating melon" I thought would mean gossip (as it usually... more>> does mean that in c-novels) at the police station had nothing to do with gossips so I have no idea why he author gave the novel its name.

as for MC's dad who is supposedly a demon lord in his pass life he seems..... weak. he's lowkey kind of boring to read and just not really up to the image a "demon lord" would have. he doesn't give the Aura of being a demon lord imo. <<less

Slice of life about a precocious 3 year old and her estranged parents. There are almost no melons/gossip/cases at the police station (just warm coworkers), and the supernatural/cultivation aspect was a tiny part of the story. The plot is detailed childcare slice of life and how her parents slowly adjust to the idea of parenting and each other. Towards the end there is a ... more>>

parallel universe plot that merges into the main storyline.

I'm giving it 4 stars as a modern cute child slice of life (which some readers may enjoy), but deducting a star for the misleading title/summary (not really about police work/gossip/supernatural stuff at all, FL is an OP cute kid with the consciousness of a kid/pup) <<less

lighthearted and funny at times, though can get boring if you want something more with the story. I wish the past played an important part in the story but so far it doesn't seem like it.

On Zhong Jin and his ex-wife:

Spoiler

Part of why I am stopping at this ch53 is because the ex-wife came into the picture around this time. Their reasoning to reaching out late: Tongtong was the child they've been dreaming of for a long time, and they only saw a video recently. She tried to take her away and they keep bickering on who keeps her, then they decided to coparent then let Tongtong pick a parent she likes better afterwards.

For me, I prefer the single dad chapters thus far, and Zhong Jin learning more about parenthood. The dreams reason also felt out of nowhere, and frankly feels like lazy writing to me.

I know they will probably end back together in the future, but as of now it doesn't really arouse my curiosity and the fighting just feels like a drag in the chapters.

[collapse]

I would recommend to read this when you want a light-hearted, I-don't-want-to-think novel. <<less

Quite a good slice of life read, with the kid as a main character. Just the slightest bit of background romance between her divorced parents who eventually get married but that’s just mentioned in passing. Their past life doesn’t really come into play, just that Zhong Yuntong retains some characteristics of the heavenly dog such as her love for meat, sense of smell, and teleportation. Her dad has forgotten everything while her mom has some memories that came in the form of dreams. No superpowers for the adults. Overall a... more>> wholesome read, but I really wish the author wrote more about the parents and their rekindling romance! <<less

This was such a wholesome book. But because of the unsatisfying ending it is only going to get a 4/5 stars from me.

Although the novel itself doesn't focus on anything related to cultivation or the demon clan it truly is still enjoyable.

The appearance of a child can truly bring brighter days to people who are heartbroken and needs healing. Such is the case of Zhong Jin who is the reincarnation of the demon lord who spoiled Zhong Yuntong. Zhong Jin lost his family a few years ago and divorced his... more>> wife shortly after that. With no family he began living in Heishan as the new police chief.

Qiu Sheng who was the reincarnation of "Madam" who was most likely the lover to Zhong Jin's reincarnation. Through Zhong Yuntong, she and Zhong Jin are brought together again.

Qiu Chen, a person who is a textbook male lead and the brother of Qiu Sheng lost his "white moonlight" who was Zhong Jin's sister. I wished the author would have given him a truly happy ending.

There are also a few minor characters whose lives are changed because of Zhong Yuntong's existence in their lives.

I love how Zhong Jin and Qiu Sheng simply accepts Zhong Yuntong's weird existence and the fact that she just have dog-like tendencies. They simply embrace Zhong Yuntong for who she is.

The interactions in this story are truly hilarious and entertaining.

I don't regret reading it but I'm not left satisfied. <<less
