Everyone in the City of Jing thinks that bestowment of marriage between Xian Junwang and the daughter of the Yi’an Marquis House is to insert a fresh flower into manure.

Xian Junwang was that fresh flower and the Di daughter of Yi’an Marquis House was that manure that was not liked.

It is said that what is heard is false, seeing is believing. Who knows what the truth really is?

Warning: long review rant ahead.

This novel is good but it's suffocating.

The couple even more so. I feel like I can't catch a breather when they appeared together because reading about how they lived and circled around each other in their daily life tired me out. I was constantly thinking 'how the heck can they stand each other?'

Another thing of note is that the genre tags didn't tell you that this novel is part-timing in mystery and psychological genres. Personally I didn't like the mix-up because I don't want to... more>> waste my time on pointless blabber used to lengthen the word count. The 'mystery' doesn't seem to be important to the story either because the MC doesn't care about it.

Even early chapters aren't spared from neck-deep hidden subplots and every characters (even the villains or insignificant ones) has to be wary of everything.

I remember that I've tried to read this novel before but I dropped it once because the younger me didn't understand much about the subtleties and the next thing I knew, another one died. Whew, lives were cheap in CN.

I liked the couple at first, MC's so similar to a lazy cat with beautiful fur. The ML has a good skin but deep scheming, definitely the usual palette that ancient CN ML had.

But as a shippable OTP... They're not a perfect match, I think. I understand that an ancient couple are not usually lovey dovey or just stay married at a polite distance. What's puzzling about this couple is that they clearly didn't trust or love each other (because arranged marriage, of course), but they acted like a loving couple on the surface.

I ended up dropping this book again because I get tired of the distrust they frequently showed, the constant little tests, the hidden mocking words.

What's the point of the author establishing them as a loving couple at the start if they can't even give the minimal trust in each other?

I'd rather the author wrote them as a distant couple that steadily grew closer as time went on than being a loving couple on the surface but treated each other like a scheming liar at the back.

ML figuratively told MC once that she's just a pretty flower supported by her family, while the MC often retaliated with her little conjugal fidelity tests. It got even worse and more frequent the farther you read.

To be honest, I think what both of them needed was a simple, gentle and selfless partner who loved them to bits to heal all those usual ancient life's trauma. They're both selfish and manipulative people who doesn't believe in true love. They must've been tired of each other after all those years of distrust... As a reader, I certainly did. <<less

Up to c11. The MC seems... flat. She doesn’t have a personality besides being lazy; what’s her motivations, what are her opinions? I just don’t get it. She’s s’posed to be reincarnated? Where’s the modern thinking? This has great ratings, so I’m hoping her personality comes out later on, but it’s been almost a dozen chapters. I’m going over to the ‘original’ Virtuous Wife, to see if the MC is any different. Will be coming back to this afterwards! Maybe?

After reading this I just felt disappointed. This story and To Be A Virtuous Wife (which I haven’t read yet) had so much hype that I started reading it with very high expectations. I’ve read Job of an Imperial Concubine, written by the same author and that story has got to be one of my favorites, which really made me believe that I’d get something of the same caliber. Unfortunately, this story bored me so much I’d rather watch paint dry and I couldn’t bring myself to like the MC.... more>> A good MC carries the story, even if the plot is bad or if the ML and side characters are one dimensional, as long as you care for the MC and want to see their journey, you’d struggle through to finally read their happy ending. Lazy MC’s are great sometimes, especially if they have to struggle against the world to maintain their laziness but the MC is so dry and blasé about almost everything that it appears as though she were apathetic to everyone around her. I think September Flowing Fire’s works focusing on Ancient China and fights for the Imperial throne are more worthwhile to read that 8TT. <<less

? Not Bad...

The MC is super lazy, which gives this story a different feel. I would have liked to know more about what happened in her past life that made her so jaded. And how the heck did she transmigrate... did I miss that while reading??

... more>> The plot was slow paced but interesting enough. However, I always felt like the MC was only watching a play the whole story and everything major happening was going on in the background as she waited to reap the benefits. ?

But the biggest problem I had was the descriptions... I was tired of hearing how beautiful she was and how perfect they looked together. And that's basically all this story was about. ?

So yeah, I didn't love this story, but definitely didn't hate it. ? <<less

Reading till chapter 8 now. And I still dot know what or where is the theme of this novel? Since, the fresh flower aand manure thing is already solved within several early chapters, it's not really the best idea for intriguing arrow in a novel unless she wears iron mask till the middle of the story.

We only know she's a rebirth or transmigrate there yet nothing so far.

And if ML loves FL just because of her face and really falls deep by the time their first morning comes........ tell me,... more>> where's the interest in this novel.

I'll post another review if I managae to read till the end LOL <<less

Dull. That's all I can say about this novel. I'm all for slice of life novels with no action, as long as the story itself is interesting. However the MC in this story feels like a side character. Most of the events don't even involve her, and she just hears about them later. Her laziness was at first endearing, but eventually became boring. There's just nothing in the story to replace the mc's usual ambition, whether it be revenge, conquering, or production. She just lazes about,... more>> semi flirting yet guarding against her husband. I'll probably go back to this novel and finish it eventually. When I do, if it becomes better I'll change my score accordingly. <<less

One of best ancient era Chinese novel. I adored this novel more than other ancient era novel. MC is kind, fiercer, clever and caring who love or care for her family and cousins. Unlike other MC, she isn't jealousy women nor do she care or love much for ml. She care her family more than ml. She is selfless kind women who protected her family and her people. I enjoying MC protected ml.

I love this novel very much. Good story, but some Chinese world confuse MC, I don't understand some Chinese word. I like this story especially MC she is gentle kind strong and overprotected toward her family. I like how she protected ML from his elder sister. I enjoying MC and ML company and interact between them. I Am so sad this novel going to end.

So boring nothing is really happening. It's not even written in a good laid back slice of life type of novel. The MC is just sitting, eating and sleeping.

Havet read TBVV but so can't give a comparison.

easily my favourite historical josei of all times. If you’re hesitating to read this, well worry not cause this is the sign for you to start reading.

MC (Hua Xi Wan) is one of my fav female leads (alongside with Qu Qingju from To Be A Virtuous Wife and Mu Xiaoya from My Husband with Scholar Syndrome) yes she is lazy but only at appropriate times. She’s the type of “if I can just say three words why say four?” kinda person or more like “if I could just smile and... more>> nod why speak?” and I think it’s very cool and admirable lol I wish I could live leisurely like that zzz. While she is lazy, she doesn’t abandon her responsibilities and she is also smart, calm and quick at making decisions.
Spoiler

my favorite scenes are probably when MC and ML act in front of others especially the crying scenes lolol

[collapse]

ML (Yan Jin Qiu) is literally the embodiment of black belly gentleman. I feel like ML and MC are quite similar in many ways. Both are good at acting, scheming and calculating. Both are quick witted and have the “filial” persona. However compared to MC, he seems a bit dull. But together, they fit each other so much and they understand each other without having to say a lot- simply harmonious.

it’s not that I like this novel just because of the main characters but also because of the side characters. For a story set revolving around the palace, there is never a shortage of vicious and cruel characters. And what I like the most is how author made all of them came to life, even the cannon fodders.

for example, the Crown Princess. I feel really bad for her
Spoiler

especially because she married that kind of slag crown prince and not enough with that.. Her father-in-law (the emperor) is just the same slag man who imp**gnated his own daughter-in-law. She was even raised as a crown princess, instead of being able to experience a normal childhood. Sigh, even after becoming the crown princess her misery just never ends. Plus the evil mother-in-law

[collapse]

and ML’s brother (Sheng Junwang) ’s wife.
Spoiler

same case as crown princess, married the wrong guy. Her husband doesn’t love or care about her and only cares about himself and his position in court. Even when she miscarried, he was apathetic

[collapse]

this novel is full of palace schemes and political issues. It centers around the fight for the throne between 3 major people (with the Emperor who is hostile towards two of them, minus one only because it’s his son) so you have to pay attention to every single details since for some reason ancient people really like to talk flowers and never straight to the point. Really a big headache, I could only be thankful I was born in the modern era.

10/5 for story. Love it~~~ i’m probably eight treasures trousseau solo stan <<less

I had big expectations about this. It's not that I was disappointed or have negative feelings—it's more like it went 'okay'.

I thought this was going to be fluffy, full of passionate love, possessive kind of ML and schemes all over the place but as it turned out, it was simple.

There's nothing wrong about it's simplicity but for people whos looking for fluff and with those complicated stuff then this is not it. It has schemes about succession but not handled greatly in my opinion.

I also do not have strong feelings... more>> about the MC and ML. MC is lazy and not meddlesome with matters she knew she should not meddle, and I like that part of her. ML is also faithful although I kind of hoped there was more challenge in their relationship to emphasize growth but oh well it's still fine.

What I am disatisfied with is the ending. I don't really care with Rui He and I bet not many people do so why write the ending in her angle? I would understand if it's just a side story. I want to read at least more details narrating the couples life in the palace and how their family slowly grow. There's also no side stories available. Sigh. <<less

Even though I have not read too far, like others have said, this novel is very boring and is mostly everyone talking about how pretty the MC is. I somewhat like her character (lazy, practices martial arts a little, not really interested in society, likes to read, slightly cold but not mean) but the story is so boring I don't want to keep reading it.

One of best novel. I like this novel more than TBVW because MC is smart, caring, strong and fiercer unlike TBVW MC, she is caring toward her cousin and isn't b*tches MC from TBVW.

I don't like TBVW because MC is b*tch, seduced and ML is only care MC because he find her interesting and beautiful different from former girl. He is playful and immature guy who think interesting thing is more important than wife. I like ETT MC and ML they are perfect couple and care each other because they... more>> are husband and wife. <<less

Many of the readers compare this novel with "To Be A Virtuous Wife" but I do not feel the same. It is true that the 2 FL of these novel has common points, like that they do not wish nor believe in men love but accept it as it come. However their background, their stories and their inner feelings for family are different. The plot is good in both novel but in "Eight Treasures Trousseau" I find the ML much better than in "TBVW" and the love story and interaction... more>> between the two protagonist are much more interesting.

The servants of the estate are truly wonderful x) MuTong is like the ultimate third-wheel, it's so funny x) and FL's two close maid are really skilled. The ending is not as satisfying than "TBVW" but it was really a good ending full of love. <<less

Since the translation finished back in 2017, I've read this novel four times, and have enjoyed each of the times I've read it. I find the novel fun and the writing style beautiful, but you may have to be in a certain mindset and understanding to read (enjoy) it.

Premise of the novel- we have a transmigrated MC (only thing it does is make her a lot more mature and gives a reason for why she is feminist (compared to others of the ancient setting), doesn't play any real role after... more>> that) who has recently been slandered by rumors and as the summary says, is betrothed by the emperor to a junwang (can think of it as a duke). The current political scene is a mess and the MC tries to live a chill life amidst the turmoil and scheming she is dragged into by virtue of her marriage. On the ML's end- he's been mired in all of this since birth so he's (understandably) ruthless in gunning for his goal with the motto (for killing) - better safe than sorry. Unlike other novels, which may throw off some readers, because we neither get an omniscient view from an author in love with her own ML nor do we see him from the perspective of MC in love with him, we actually don't see to much of his thought process and scheming. And unlike other novels, he's definitely more one to take the 文 route- as in he's no military commander off to rebel- he's actually trying to get his goal with the least fussing and change, and whether or not he means it this way, it's the safest for the commoners and anyone who isn't his enemy. The novel showcases more of the MC and ML's great acting in front of the rest of the world than brilliant dramatic moves, so the story itself is a lot calmer- aka don't read for drama and intense emotional lines. Great MC, great family, really good ML (especially for the time period) - I'd say he tries harder in a respectful way than almost any ML in these types of novels to have open communication... but he also sort of has to hahaha.

You do have to read behind the lines- there's more outright said than in TBAVW (another great novel) - yet there's a lot less action talked about, so you really have to pick up on the side mentions here and there and pay attention to what the characters are doing (since you don't necessarily get their thoughts as they do it, you may have to think about why- it's like watching a drama/movie) get a peak of what is happening. Because of this style, the author minimizes drama and dramatic moments, but I feel like it gives a really good portrayal of the MC's mindset- she sees and hears clearly but she doesn't want to get involved, so she pretends not to know what is happening until she feels like she has to address it. Very interesting writing style- loved it, but not one that everyone will appreciate it.

Agree with Kardelune's well-thought and much more in depth review. Going to stop here before I start discussing or defending some other comments made about the novel <<less

This is my third time trying to read this. I really wanted to like it since it has high rating but the pace is too slow for me plus there's no chemistry between MC & ML. I even tried to read all the reviews cuz I was confused at myself to why I couldn't like it. I won't rate it cuz this is one of those novel u either love it or hate it. Unfortunately I agree with ppl who rated 2/3 stars on this. Maybe cuz I'm reading this... more>> after Rebirth of the Malicious Empress which has great characters, chemistry & pace. This just isn't my cup of tea. It's too vague and slow pace for my liking.

I was excited cuz ppl commented that the MC is lazy. I love lazy MC (like Master disconnected yet again, Coming of the villain boss) but this MC is not IT. Also MC & ML interaction is giving NPC. A lot of people compares this with To be a virtuous wife. I do not like reading harem since after reading The Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir and since then I do not want to pick up another harem ever again. TBAVW seems to be the one I would avoid and since a lot of ppl compare it with this, I was starting to worried if this is gonna be the same. Because it's too vague & slow pace, I couldn't figure it out and if it is, it'll be too late once I figured it out. For me, this is the novel I would read when I have nothing else to read. It's not great but not the worst. So unless I find a review that confirms it doesn't have harem, I don't think I'll be picking this up again. <<less

Translation: 5+/5

Plot:4.5/5

Characters: 4.5/5

... more>> Laziness: Peak

Basic plot, MC is transmigrator into ancient times, gets decreed into marriage with ML, they feel each other out, plot happens, happy end. Plot is pretty straight forward, MC is talented, super beautiful, and skilled, she takes down obstacles when they purposefully comes her way and is too lazy to bother scheming. ML is handsome, highly positioned, cultured, etc., but secretly ambitious and coldhearted, but eventually warms up to MC since they're fated. The two start off married, but their relationship develops over the course of the story in a subtle and believable way. It's strange, there's lots of tropes, but you still end up cheering for them. Some of the major plot movements happen in the background or is glossed over, especially near the end, but I liked that things weren't dragged out. The translation is amazing and contributed greatly to my enjoyment of the story. Recommended read all around. <<less

Does this author write anything other than awesome stories?

I clicked on chapter one after another poster noted the ML’s torture chamber. I was not disappointed.

I very very highly recommend this.

I’m holding out for a sequel featuring the life and times of Mu Tong, the greatest right hand man ever.

I also salute the commenters on the translators website. There was some subtle wordplay that I think was missed translating from Chinese to English (always a shame). Translation was solid throughout.

If you hate harem, this is for you.

If you hate s*upid FL, this is for you.

This is a beautiful Romance story with the right mix of scheming and politics.

... more>> The protagonists are somewhat passive on the surface but do a lot of shady things. There are scenes where they have to face other characters and prove that they are not easily intimidated but it was always done swiftly and not cringey. Like for example, the FL doesn't have to dance and sing in front of everyone to prove herself.

I also think the translation was good enough. <<less
