Everyone in the City of Jing thinks that bestowment of marriage between Xian Junwang and the daughter of the Yi’an Marquis House is to insert a fresh flower into manure.

Xian Junwang was that fresh flower and the Di daughter of Yi’an Marquis House was that manure that was not liked.

It is said that what is heard is false, seeing is believing. Who knows what the truth really is?

This story has the atmosphere of the slice-of-life genre even if it isn't tagged as such.

The political schemes are subtle and the romance is simple.

Good read if you want a simple romance in the historical setting to pass the time.

I personally didn't enjoy this novel, but I can 100% see how so many people love it.

Audience this is for

This novel was definitely not made for a casual reader like me (I read webnovels to mainly relax) because the author uses a ton of double-speak, or words that could be interpreted so many different ways from different perspectives. As I said earlier, I read for fun and don't like to spend mental energy trying to think about the novel but enjoy it instead, so the way that this novel was... more>> written made me feel like I was missing something. The author doesn't really explain much either, so it was hard to know exactly what was going on. If not for translator notes and comments by readers, I would not have understood what was going on. Idk, maybe I'm just dumb.

Tldr: This novel is super well written and translated so if you aren't lazy and dense like me love an intriguing plot with so much foreshadowing and hidden meanings, this novel is for you!

Plot and characters

I love reading about lazy characters and Hua Xi Wan is wonderful. She is smart, and knows when to stop caring. The transmigration part of her doesn't affect the plot too much. YJQ is handsome, cunning, etc. Docile on the outside and sly on the inside. HXW doesn't shy away from it and their masks aren't removed for the entire novel pretty much. Plot is great and there are so many nuances and play on words that may be hard to understand.

Tldr: Good plot, solid characters.

Complaints/Final thoughts

Personally, there wasn't too much going on directly happening to the characters, and if the ML did something, the reader would only be told something vague and this novel was just a bunch of: this happened to minor character or so and so died, and the main leads kept their mask on of being kind and uncaring basically the entire time. Basically, we don't see them actually doing things (FL just lazy, ML wants to keep his mask on), just them reacting to rumors spreading. There was no "hype" and "build-up" of seeing the main characters plot something and hoping that it works out. I just didn't have that strong connection to root for the character even though I wanted to so bad. If they did plot something, we would just skip over it happening and cut to the result and the effects of it. I thought it was sooo boring, but you can have a totally different take on it.

Additionally, this is my 2nd time reading it (I forgot that I had read it before/partially read it) but turns out I finished it before and completely forgot. That's how memorable it was. <<less

Can't say this is a romance novel, can't say this is a palace intrigue or family scheme warfare either, each sentence might have a deeper meaning or it might have not, leaves room for reader to think which is probably the only upside of this novel and that kept me going and finishing it.

Characters are rather realistic, they don't go full IQ-nerfed and cannon-fodder-mode facing main characters, some might be dumb but they'll get even schemed against other cannon fodders. To me, everything was written very passively, by the time... more>> some event occurred, it's mostly how it affected people afterwards. There rarely was a big event that happened in the moment. Mostly, this passive style has to be blamed on the lazy MC that really can't be bothered to go places and do things.

As to why I didn't feel this was a romance novel;

Spoiler

She deeply swore to herself with a clear and sober mind that she'll never give her heart to a man and from the beginning til end she stuck to that. She did mostly everything to protect herself and the family that raised and loved her with all their hearts. The only touching moment when she stood up for the male lead was when the sister came to bully the two.

Novel revealed along halfway through how ML felt about MC, but honestly, it made no sense to me, as it could very well be just infatuation due to her uniqueness and nothing else. It might be also due to her overwhelming beauty but meh, all I felt from this couple was pure respect and cooperation. There were a lot of sweet and pampering moments but all in all, far from actual romance. (Heck, if you didn't put names in, I could imagine him spoiling a pet instead of a human being, excluding the very very subtle rolling in the sheets hints. No srsly, the s*x was so subtle, I doubted for a long time that they even consummated their marriage on their wedding eve.)

Additionally, there were things ML had done at the risk of MC's reputation and before they revealed the private thoughts of ML, I could definitely imagine him tossing her to the wolves, figuratively speaking.

[collapse]

The story is overall enjoyable and a nice read but in case you are here for the romance, I'd rate it 1star. It just doesn't feel like it ever had a main genre.

About the schemes and plottings;

Spoiler

While the writing was overly passive so was the scheming of ML&MC, everybody falls hook line and sinker for their plots while they dodge matrix style from everybody else's. They played an observer role until the finishing move for a big table turn that, guess what, also was passively narrated. So all ML and MC had to do most of the time is to act the heck out of their white lotus roles and then strike in the end, they didn't even round up a couple most annoying roles like the Zhang aunt and ML's female cousin.

This novel was truly wonderful, and forever will be one of my favourites. From the scheming to the underlying messages, this novel has been one hell of a ride. The FL has such character strength and a broad mindset that you'd be pulled into fawning over her like the ML. As a modern woman, deep down in her bones, she knows that she has the strength and free will to retaliate - to express her opinion. I believe that is the true selling point of this novel, and one that... more>> makes it timeless. This is one of the things that are absent from many other novels although they try to highlight it and fail miserably.

To be honest, when I first started reading this novel, I wasn't highly invested in it and found it quite boring. However, if you keep reading and watch how the plot thickens as well as the growth between characters, you'd be able to truly enjoy the novel. The cast of characters is on a small scale but does not take away from the story at all. If anything, it allowed the author to more exquisitely explore their individual motivations and personalities. Though the FL is quite OP in another sense, she is a human with many flaws - this is highlighted though subtly through the text.

From beginning to end, this novel has been amazing. The ML and FL are so cute together, and I truly respect stories where monogamy is in place. Stories with harems in them are quite lackluster, to me at least.

An outstanding 5/5 from me <3 <<less

Just finished binge-reading this, I found it really interesting and satisfying.

If you read and liked To Be a Virtuous Wife, then you will probably like this, too.

When I first started TBaVW, I found that story was really interesting, but it strained my brain a lot. Primarily, all of the Chinese terms/honourifics/titles, but also the detail and dense meaning of the writing. I paused that one and went and read looooots of other, more light-hearted Chinese novels of various genres, before picking up Eight treasures Trousseau. This time, I found the... more>> same type of writing much easier to read.

While this is a modern woman reincarnated into an ancient-China-type-era story, it is not the lightweight and easily-digestible writing you might find in ones such as Black Bellied Miss, Transmigrator vs Reincarnator or Doomed to be Canon Fodder. The writing here is more like reading Jane Austen - the details of etiquette and small talk might seem trivial, but, in fact, they are full of meaning and this is where the plot is actually developing. As I said, this became easier for me to understand after becoming a little more familiar with ancient Chinese culture, and so it became interesting and intriguing.

I liked the MC because she has strength and intelligence but she does not use it much and the story does not rely on this too much (well, perhaps the rarely-displayed-but-impressive physical ability is a bit too Mary Sue) ; Unlike similar novels, she's not actively scheming or brilliantly face-slapping all the time (although she's capable enough), instead there's an overarching plot unfolding of political intrigue and machinations as various factions vie for power.

I found the fact that the MC remembered her past life almost unimportant, as it is not overtly utilised as in some stories where the MC will use her special skills, knowledge or experience. However, it does mean she is viewing things through the dual perspective of someone born and raised in an old-fashioned era who has also lived independently in the modern era. This means that her values are more in line with the readers' values, which is more satisfying to read. I did find it uncomfortable to be supporting an MC and ML who are fine with the harsh way enemies and even out-of-line servants are ab*sed, but at least the author had her grow up in the era since birth and therefore she had a realistic rather than idealistic attitude to a lot of the things that should outrage someone who had only just transmigrated. The MC is also not without some genuine compassion and kindness, although she is not a bleeding heart.

As well as the intricate writing, I also really enjoyed the balanced and realistic way most of the characters were treated. There were actually nice characters. Especially, many of those who behaved antagonistically were not completely without good qualities, and we even saw how some purer characters were gradually corroded by the toxic environment of plotting and manipulating.

Also, the translation was, while not flawless, of a high quality that really made reading enjoyable.

In the end, my ratings are always primarily for how readable & enjoyable a story is. This is not quite the mindless, easy read of some others of this genre, but I still found it smooth, interesting and engaging. I wanted to keep reading (and I did, on and on).

(I almost never give five stars; it would have needed to to have just a tiny bit less literature-like heaviness - it's not very heavy, though - and probably have MCs that never did anything that jarred with my modern-day principles at all. Small things, though.) <<less

The entire novel is rather subversive. Underneath the surface romance/plot, it felt like the author was thumbing her nose at all those stereotypical historical plots and MCs/MLs.
Spoiler

The author writes the ML literally as a complete psycho while the MC is too lazy to even feed herself. Instead of trying to change circumstances/rebirth, the MC just goes along with everything and tries to live as comfortably as possible. The ML is helplessly trying to get her to care about his ambitions. It's hilarious.

[collapse]

This is a subtle and slow story. There aren't a lot of direct actions and might appear boring to some people. It's definitely not an instant-gratification or "love-at-first-sight blinding obsession" type plot/romance, which I personally thought was one of its strong points and greatly differentiated it from other novels in this genre.

All the characters (except some of the cannon fodder servants) are well-written and have way more complexity than your typical scheming cast. No one is "clean" or pure, which makes sense in this time period, especially relating to the imperial family and struggles for the throne.

It's nice to see complex and sympathetic female villains for once. And it's not just the females who are scheming (thank god).

I did have to read the comments frequently in order to understand many of the subtleties in the interactions between the characters, which wasn't a bad thing in my opinion. Schemes were pretty deep! The subtleties and foreshadowing definitely make this book re-readable.

Other things I enjoyed:

    • the MC is the one who is "valiant" and able to physically protect herself. ML has the reputation as the scholar type. Really rare to have that kind of role reversal!
      Spoiler

Even though it's hinted that he knows martial arts, he never actually uses it in the story.

      [collapse]
    • the MC's feelings for the ML were realistic for the time period, as the power imbalance between men and women were so skewed. MC treated ML well because he treated her well, but she was careful not to fall into the common pitfalls of the poor women of the time.
      Spoiler

That made the ending super sweet when she decided to "gamble" on the MC and let herself fall in love because he had shown her his sincerity so well.

      [collapse]
    • Spoiler

I'm usually not a fan of HEAs where the MC/ML become emperor/empress because it's just so unrealistic. I know fictional stories are idealized and meant for entertainment, so this is just my personal tastes. Emperor/empress in ancient china + happiness/truelove are such polar opposites, it ruins the fantasy for me (haha). However, this book is the exception. It's pretty clearly represented that the imperial family doesn't bring happiness, so it's surprisingly subversive.

OMG I LOVED THIS NOVEL ?

MC (Hua Xi Wan) was so rational and not crazily OP. She wasn’t the “you step on my foot I cut off your leg” kind of person. Instead, she was merciful but not to the point of being a saint.

BUT THE POINT THAT MADE ME COMPLETELY WANT TO GIVE A 6 STAR RATING WAS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MC AND ML. IT WAS NOT LIKE LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT BUT LOVE THAT DEVELOPS OVER TIME. BUT ALSO, THE LEVEL OF TRUST BETWEEN THEM IS AMAZING. When... more>> MC learns that ML does questionable things, the first thing that comes to mind is not to divorce him (as many other typical FL’s would do) but to protect him.

The only thing I would ask more of is about the past life MC had. We know that she used to work in the entertainment circle, but that’s just about it. I would also want another chapter about her children (~haha they’re probably so spoiled).

Overall, it was just astonishing how well executed this story is. Everything makes sense, and all the characters felt like a real person in the real world you could talk to, even the minor ones. What an outstanding book!

Beautifully written. Much like Yue Xia Die Ying’s other work, To Be a Virtuous Wife, it follows the story of how a woman who transmigrated into the body of another and lived her life in the Ancient Chinese world. Transmigration plays a role, but it is much more subtle then that of other novels, it shows in the MC’s mentality more so then her actions.

Unlike To Be a Virtuous Wife (TVW), the plots and schemes, the underlying plots and steps taken, is more obvious in comparison, not to say it... more>> is predictable but more so that it is unveiled in more detail, hinted with more foreshadowing then TVW where much of what happens underneath the surface is inferred but never directly shown or hinted at or revealed long after.

The MC is, ironically, more active the TVW’s Qu Qing Ju, she’s more involved in the plots and her relationship with the ML, Yan Jin Qiu, contrasts that of Qu Qing Ju and He Heng. They have a level of communication, of open secrets and plots and understanding, which is different from QQJ and HH, not in a good or bad way but while similar, it is interesting to see the differences between the two couples. The Hua Xi Wan is much more relaxed, it’s easy to liken her to a lazy feline but never doubt that she has the claws and teeth that came with being a predator rather then prey. In comparison Qu Qing Ju is more mature, jaded, yet when she moves she is lively and majestic, if I were to liken her to an animal then perhaps a lioness or a nightingale?

If I were to have one complaint, it’d be the abrupt ending, Eight Treasure Trosseau’s ending is satisfying, but not as satisfying as TVW. (I don’t want to spoil it so that’s all I will say but if you are after a spoiler...

Spoiler

Predictably, Hua Xi Wan and Yan Jin Qiu ascend the throne to become Empress and Emperor respectively, much like Qu Qing Ju and He Heng. In TVW that’s far from the end, we got to read how their relationship grows further. We got to see Qu Qing Ju get pregnant and give birth to Tun Tun and later meet her other children. We got to watch as they overcame more plots and schemes, as they overcame the challenges that came with the being the Imperial Couple. In Eight Treasure Trosseau, Hua Xi Wan and Yan Jin Qiu ascending the throne marked the end. Not to say Yue Xia Die Ying didn’t tie up all the loose ends but it was too succinct, the crowning and life after was concluded in the last 2-3 chapters and while sweet, much less satisfying. Basically they were crowned and most of their life after was summarised by a few paragraphs at fhe end which tells their story from the modern point of view (like in a history book) although one part that amused me was when they (modern people of the novel) wondered if Yan Jin Qiu had transmigrated from their time... to put it simply, he’d done what most transmigrated in other novels (usually Japanese world building ones) do.

[collapse]

Overall, I highly, highly, highly recommend this novel. Good for a light read, good for a not-so-light one, and if you are ever confused or if you ever feel like you’re missing something while reading it, I suggest reading the comments below each chapter written by other readers. I got a lot of insight into the story, to see the full effect, read through the novel once without reading the comments and then read it again while reading the comments. It’s unbelievable, and amazing, how much you can miss that others haven’t. (I recommend doing that for To Be a Virtuous Wife too) (^ω^) <<less

Love love love this novel so much. I've been reading countless stereotyped settings of women becoming Wang Fei, beautiful, cunning, rose above the top, but the author of this novel purposefully set out two main characters who are so unique and un-stereotyped (the female lead is lazy, just like me, prefers to avoid drama and hassle whenever she can). Not only that, the supporting characters are all likeable -- no matter whether they're the enemy or not. Everyone has their own reasons for what they've done: I love how the... more>> author gives perspectives outside of the main characters' thoughts. Great characters, including supporting ones as they're grey characters, and are not entirely black nor white. Above all, like some have mentioned, this is a feminist novel -- it is, above all (yes, even above the romance), a story about how women were struggling to survive amidst a very patriarchal society. Do not be deceived by the Romance tag and setting, just like the main characters, you have to really read between the lines to see what is the true central theme of the story -- the story of strong and intelligent women and their struggles in ancient China. <<less

This is, by far, my favorite ancient-era Chinese novel.

What I love the most about this is the female lead or the main character. Her character is so unique that I don't think I can find another similar. It can be summed up in two words - lazy and gluttonous. Her favorite things to do are eating and sleeping. Unconventional, yeah, particularly for the era the book is set in where talents and virtues are everything for girls, but the MC always gets away with it due to her beauty and... more>> brain.

Her character makes the whole situation so damn funny. And I might add that her family, and later her husband, also spoils her a lot which makes her laziness incurable.

Besides the MC, other characters are all very well-developed. Each has their own back-story and logic for what they do. None is just out to be the bad guy. They all have reasons for horrible things they do, no matter how terrible their reasons are. One could even say this is a feminist story with all different types of female characters it featured.

And the author didn't judge. - This is very important. The author let the readers make their own decision without being in our face that we should like or dislike a particular character.

I also love the male lead. He's shady af but that's what makes the story so enjoyable. He also makes for a good partner with the MC. The imperial family is also interesting as you will learn as the story progresses.

I highly recommend this story to everyone. Also if you enjoy To Be A Virtuous Wife by the same author, you will like this one even more. <<less

I really adore this story, the only sore point is that it's just too short.

A reincarnation story, but the MC starts younger and she is truly loved by the ML. With the Emperor conspiring against his nephews, it was only the rumors of how ugly and sickly the MC is that made the Emperor marry her into the Imperial Family - what a huge mistake.

Spoiler

Nobody's over-powered, but everybody's just moving and positioning themselves and manipulating (or trying to) events and people since the throne is at stake.

Who gets the Best Acting Award - the Imperial Family - that includes the relatives, some of who just want to be left in their indolent and literati lives, except the Crown Prince is infertile and the Emperor is a rapist, and etc etc etc.

The ML and MC start with just acting a role, a devoted and so in love husband and wife. The ML truly falls in love with the MC while MC, we are not really sure but she is behind her husband 110%. As a matter of fact, her decisive actions (really just small personal decisions, nothing major like the Malicious Empress) helped secure the throne for her hubby.

[collapse]

It's an enjoyable read, with bits of luck, torture, political machinations, and intrigue. Again, I just wished it was a bit longer. <<less

If you have read to be a virtues wife then this novel of the same author is quite similar

It deals with the every day life of the women (and men) of the imperial family

The MC is a person of high status and has her family's love but she couldnt escape her fate of being married because of a roumor.... The ML on the other hand is a capable stratigist and quite ruthless to people

You may get confussed over the hidden meanings of what many people say or do in this... more>> novel since they dont get explained much (unless you read the coments :D) <<less

I'm one of the few souls who hasn't read To Be A Virtuous Wife. I have it on the back-burner for a later read but I've been growing a bit tired of all the calculating/scheming/black-bellied female MCs stuck in a situation where it seems everyone is against them and wanted something from the same genre but different. I'm not saying that I don't adore the aforementioned story tropes (because I do), I just wanted something, well, different. And after reading the comments by ljin75651 and willwiz, I decided to give... more>> this a try because

Spoiler

it seems that the conflict in the story isn't something stemming directly from the MC but is more centered around the ML, with the MC not trying to get involved, and

the MC's personality and her reactions to her situation were enough of a twist to get me reading the first chapter. And so far, I haven't been disappointed.

Spoiler

In fact, the biggest reason I like this story is because ONLY the ML seems to be black-bellied while the MC seems largely unambitious. She has a pretty cushy life (compared to others around her) and doesn't seem to wish to exert more effort than she has to. I'm interested to see how that plays into and contrasts with all the conflict the ML is in. And speaking of the ML, I'm really liking how ambiguous his feelings towards the MC are (so far) and can't wait to see where and how things change between them.

I'm glad I took a chance on this at the very least. <<less

The story is quite similar to TBVW except the Female lead have the solid backing of her paternal family and there are no other women in the harem in the estate. The leads characteristics and background in this story was delved deeper than in TBVW. I like it a bit better than the TBVW due to that reason.

Spoiler

Though I really found it awkward and weird when the members of the Royal family died or thrown into prison in a span of two years. I mean, is that kind of thing really possible during that era? Who knows.

As of now the romance part feels like a more realistic version of tbavw, you can see they could eventually be in love, but they know they aren't, unlike tbavw where they basically mutually one-way love each other. Here there is no insecurities, both characters seem very clear on their positions.

On the story, it focuses a little more on the outside world, so it's refreshing and it means we can see the husband actually doing stuff, not just the results.

So overall I like this one better but it's mainly... more>> because I identify more with the MC, both are very good stories. <<less

Little cliche, but a good kind of cliche. Because translator has been translating a ancient Chinese novel before this, they can use it as foundation and make the story flow extremely well. Learning from the many Chinese word that used on novel, translator try their best to convey it in English word.

MC has a noble parentage, not many detail has been shown to the reader about how the original owner of the body died, there's no broken engagement nor revenge to be done either. MC's family is alive, well, and... more>> very loving to MC. Male lead is kinda shady, but not many has been revealed yet except when he decided to give power (to make decision on wangfu, before it's on head butler's hand) to MC after seeing how beautiful she was.

One thing that make me unsatisfied is the frequency of the release, which is one chapter per week. I really hope they will churn up more chapter. <<less

I loved this! I love this as much as I loved 'The Job of An Imperial Concubine', and I actually enjoyed this much more than 'To Be a Virtuous Wife'.

The romance is very slow-burn, but I honestly did feel there was chemistry between the MC and ml. I also see how the ML gradually fell for the MC (and its due to her character, not love at first sight due to her beauty). They are such a power couple! Initially, after reading some reviews, I was afraid I wouldnt like... more>> the MC being too lazy and disinterested but she's such a badass, I absolutely love her. She's intelligent and knows how to stand her ground.

I like the ML here too. He has questionable morals and he's pretty damn scary when he wants to be but he's loyal and sincere to our MC :D

The overall plot was interesting and kept me hooked despite the palace politics things happening. Pacing was great too and overall, I would say this is one of my favourites :D <<less

I simply adored the lazy FL, unique, she maybe lazy but once tickled, she is brilliant.
