“Go Yohan, you really are a terrible bastard.”

“I can’t help it. Bullying is more fun than being bullied.”

Despite his outer appearance of a kind model student, Kang Jun was filled to the brim with an inferiority complex.

As he advanced into his second year, he grew closer to Go Yohan, who was in the same class as him.

“I’ll treat you especially different.”

At some point, as if it were only natural, Go Yohan claimed his seat at the very summit of the pyramid inside the school.

He, whose second nature seemed to be ignoring and suppressing others, showed interest in Kang Jun.

Kang Jun, who was subtly ignored by his friends for being weak, didn’t dislike Go Yohan’s interest, but…

Eighteen, the period where one’s pride took the lead and held fear of crossing the line.

Kang Jun had to make a choice to survive.

A very wise choice.

translator here, thought I might as well write a review since its been so long and so that people can get a better idea of the story before reading

in short, they're just horrible people, almost all of the characters except for maybe like two. it's like they hit a low and then keep going lower 😭 anyhow, I think thats the most interesting part of this story, the dynamics of the relationships (love, hate, love and hate repeatedly fluctuating between each other) and the way some of them think. its... more>> one of the more famous korean bls, and it relies heavily on kang juns mentality and development throughout the story because, surprisingly enough, that man does change!!

kang jun is a horrible narrator though dont let his development fool you, whatever he says should not be trusted. the story isnt fully told when you're in his pov, I guess

about go yohan... speechless. this motherf*cker left me speechless and sent me through a spiral of at least 27 different emotions. like what the hell is his problem?? what the hell is everyones problem??? but he is definitely a very well developed and fleshed out character. the more hints and facts you gather along the story allow you to piece together his sh*t storm of a life. the author does a good job of giving the characters dimension and not making them flat and basic

some people probably find this too dramatic since "they're just in high school its not that serious" which well yes is true but this is also korea with horrible bullying problems. still, kang jun didnt need to do all that idk what he was on but its still reasonable considering hes a high school student and everything is infinitely more dramatic in his eyes (even he thinks he was doing too much later on)

honestly the reason why I didnt write a review up until now is just because all I have to say is I love this novel to death and its just interesting just read it if you want to see the downfall of a**holes

Spoiler

go yohans also a regretful ml??? because of the most headache inducing misunderstanding arc where he just lets kang jun fall from grace but honestly kang jun held a grudge for that and even after they 'reunited' he didnt really forgive him (and then poured coffee over his head and told him hes always f*cking hated him)

which actually that arc did something for kang jun I mean he sent a dude to the hospital 😭😭 unlocked the inner idgaf in him it was crazy

If you're looking for a novel with complex characters, intense relationships, and just the right amount of insanity, then you need to read this. But fair warning—this story is not for everyone.

The main story takes place in an all-boys high school, where hierarchy, caution, and power plays rule the social scene. It might seem excessive at times, but if you've ever been around teenage boys, you'll know that dominance and superiority are basically their lifeblood. And this novel captures that perfectly.

The Characters – Deeply Flawed, Deeply Human

The characters in this... more>> novel are complex and morally gray. They aren't perfect, but realistic. You might empathize with them, then hate them later on. That's what makes them so fascinating.

The MC: Kang Jun – Unique, Selfish, and Realistic

He's not your typical naive, cutesy bottom. He's selfish—consciously, repeatedly selfish—and he fully acknowledges it. He makes bad decisions, sometimes terrible ones, and he knows it. But that's what makes him interesting. He does good things, but not because he believes he's a good person—rather, his actions are often driven by personal gain or the desire to feel better about himself. And honestly? That's real. Who hasn't done something good with a selfish motive, even if it's just for peace of mind? To me, as long as a good deed is done, the intent behind it doesn't matter. Yes, he's also calculative to the point you can call him opportunistic. He's also terrified of his sexuality being found out in an all boys school which adds another layer of realism to his character.

What makes him so compelling is how realistically written he is. He's not a saint, not even close. He's calculating, pragmatic, and fully aware of his flaws. But at the same time, you can't help but root for him because his personality makes sense, or atleast to me. That being said, Kang Jun will frustrate and annoy the hell out of you at times. If you need to like the MC to enjoy a story, this might not be for you. But if you're willing to be patient with a deeply flawed character, it's worth the read.

The ML: Go Yohan – Attractive. Insane. Unpredictable.

And then there's Go Yohan—the obsessive, dangerously alluring love interest. The top. He's the type of character that gets under your skin and refuses to leave. Raised in a strict Catholic family, he carries a rosemary bracelet at school, but don't be fooled—religion is more of a game to him than a guiding principle. At first, he's difficult to understand. His actions seem confusing, even contradictory. But as you read further into the novel, things start making sense. There's something about him that just keeps you interested.

Just like Kang Jun, he's not perfect. He's not a nice good person, but he's not a complete psycho either. (Atleast to the MC) He is a deeply flawed human being with his own fears and desires. And that's what makes him so damn interesting. Also if you've seen the manhwa and seen how he looks, maybe his insanely attractive looks are a factor into why you can't help but keep wanting to know about him and want to keep reading about him.

At first, he seems like the obvious better choice compared to Kang Jun's initial crush, Han Junwoo. But as the story unfolds, Go Yohan will reveal exactly who he is.

He's insanely attractive, but also insanely insane. He is both the angel and the devil.

The Romance – Slow Burn, Angsty, and Absolutely Worth It

MINOR SPOILERS:

Spoiler

Now, let's talk about the romance. This fool, Go Yohan, was OBSESSED with Kang Jun. And yet, despite so many chances for them to just get together in secret, (In my opinion those were chances and not in the character's opinions) he still manages to mess it up. Why? Because he's an idiot. I wanted to shake some sense into him so many times.

This man had everything served to him on a silver platter in the romance department and still failed to appreciate it. Sigh. This fool really had to make things difficult.

But hey, I get it. I understand why the story had to play out the way it did.

So my personal gripes are solely because of my personal feelings on the matter.

Their actual romance doesn't happen until university, and let me tell you—it is so worth the wait. Go Yohan will repent for his sins against Kang Jun, and he will do it in a very holy way (wink wink). Oh, and if you're wondering about the smut, it's in the epilogues—and yes, it's very, very sexy.

[collapse]

The Vibe – Painful, Dark, and Beautiful

This is a novel that's hard to describe because of all the different ways the drama unfolds. The characters f*ck around and find out lol.

The novel doesn't try to make you cry for the sake of drama. It just is what it is—raw, messy, and brutally honest. And despite all the frustration, I still found myself completely captivated.

And yes, they're both privileged rich kids, and you might think, "Ugh, rich people problems." But the novel also deals with realistic, universal issues—ones that make you forget their wealth even matters.

Final Thoughts – Is It Worth Reading?

It's interesting, it's dark, it's insane, it's obsessive, it's hot, it's sad—it's basically a Taylor Swift song, a Lana Del Rey song, and 'Heaven' by Troye Sivan all rolled into one.

Would I recommend it? Yes—if anything I mentioned piqued your interest, read it.

Do I have any regrets about reading it? None.

This novel drove me insane, but I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. If you love intense, character-driven stories, you'll be hooked. If you're willing to stick with the story, the payoff is worth it. Give it a try—you won't regret it. <<less

I love this story so much 🥲

When I first read this I actually thought I'd just drop it after reading a paragraph. I didn't really feel like reading anything and I didn't usually read these stories... but then I ended up finishing the prologue and became interested. Then I kept reading more and became obsessed!!!

The main characters are very well written. Especially the main character. He's written in a way that makes it seriously seem like he's an actual person. He's clearly not a saint, which I like a lot.... more>> He's really calculating and on the selfish side. It's nice to read about him because that's exactly the type of personality that makes sense with the information given about him.

as for the male lead, he is crazy. What I liked about him was that he wasn't the perfect male lead that you'd normally expect. He also has struggles and flaws, and his character is written very well. He seems like this tough, almighty perfect guy, but he is still a troubled teenager with his own issues too. The novel shows that quite well.

the translation is really well done and it's easy to read. Although I'm not sure why it's stopped, I'm hoping that it is continued somehow because I can't read a word of Korean 😭 and the MTL actually makes zero sense to me..

but it's still an amazing book. The characters really seem like troubled teens (not just the main characters but everyone around them too), the story is really interesting, and everything is laid out in really nice foreshadowing. You can get an idea of what's going to happen, but you just can't be sure because the author leaves out some details until the very moment they want to reveal something. Otherwise, I don't think being a detective would be a good career choice for me...

It's seriously good and I love it sm. Definitely one of my favoritesss ❤️

this is some perfect angst. The characters are so well thought out that it makes you cringe as if you yourself are in the story. And I'm shallow so I like GYH bc he's hot lol. The MC is an extreme pushover and technically a loser imo but the story is still good. Good job on the translation

All the characters are quite literally awful people. It makes for an excellent story, though I have to admit, it left such an uneasy feeling in my gut.

Everything just keeps going downhill. MC is selfish for once and I like that, and ML definitely isn’t the best person to exist.

I was and am very invested in this. While they all suck, you can’t help but root for and empathize with many of the characters. Writing was really good. I’d say I enjoyed it a lot.

This is a novel that is difficult for me to describe. You read it and you feel pain from the reality, from the situations that arise in the novel, from the misunderstandings, from the actions of the characters. There is no forced tragedy here, everything is organic, there are light moments when you think: "Yes, everything is fine, " but at the same time it's not. However, this is the simultaneous advantage of this novel: it is what it is. At the same time, you empathise with the characters, but... more>> at the same time you think: "Well, you're an arsehole." I believe the characters in this story, they are not perfect, but that is what makes them alive. I'm reading it now and I'm very glad I found this novel <<less

I love how complex and morally grey the characters are, they aren't perfect but thats what makes me like them so much,

The MC is such a unique Character different from most bl mcs, he's selfish like most people and does everything he can to achieve what he wants and doesn't help if theres no benefits, he's also scared of being caught gay

And the ML is also complex at first everything he does is complicated to understand but as you read more and learn about him its like a firework... more>> went off in my head like "ohh thats explains why he did that" or something like that, he isn't perfect and he's not a green flag just like the MC he's in the gray zone not a sweetheart but not a pyscho he's just human that has desires and fears.

Also why did the chapters reduce like there was ch 10 pt 2 but now theres just 1 chp with 4 parts ? What happened <<less

TLDR: Great writing with a heavily character-driven story, focused on deeply flawed, fascinating leads. Recommended if you can stomach heavy reads.

There's something very claustrophobic about being inside the protagonist, Kang Jun's head. He's neurotic, a calculative opportunist, equally self-possessed as he is insecure. He's not especially likable, but he is relatable, and he embodies teenage angst to its fullest. These petty fights jockeying for position to be the top dog at school, hiding his sexuality, the desire to avoid becoming a social pariah - these concerns are all amplified by... more>> being from the perspective of an eighteen-year-old, and Jun is far too aware of it, but can't help being s**ked into the muck regardless.

The atmosphere that the novel creates is thick and oppressive. We're constantly the witness to the calculations that Jun is making to take advantage of each situation - things that, in the grand scheme of things, feel so small - but that, for him in that moment, feel like dire matters of survival. The writing does such a wonderful job of maintaining tension throughout, with this heavy, gloomy mood. You'd think romance might lighten the mood, but nah, not here. Jun's relationship with Go Yohan is fraught with ambiguity and uncertainty.

Go Yohan himself is endlessly fascinating. He begins the story as an untouchable, but charming enigma, and as events unfold, you see him lose the veneer of effortless dominance and uh... show his true colors?
Spoiler

For me, the moment I thought, 'oh no, this is veeeery uncomfortable' did not come from when he smashed a metal chair on Junwoo (It's a Korean all boy's school; I expect violence, though, yes, that is genuinely insane). It came from when Jun discovers Yohan's stalking hobby and Yohan just completely loses his shit, screaming 'no' over and over like a child. The way he reacts to losing control is so raw, and when you see him fly off the handle in other scenes, it's unsettling in a way other red flag MLs aren't, because it feels equally vulnerable as it is terrifying. In the final side story, you get a glimpse of his perspective and it's very raw. The author did a great job of fleshing him out in all his strange and jagged edges, and his wildly swinging emotions and strange thoughts are believable.

The heavy atmosphere definitely loosens up in the side stories, where Jun goes off to college. Minus the occasional flare-ups from Yohan, they honestly have a weirdly... cute relationship? It's nothing to aspire to, sure, but they really match each other's freak. My standards may be all whack from reading too many red flag stories, so take my assessment with a grain of salt. But Kang Jun definitely loosens up and his prissy, uptight attitude even comes across as cute, later on. You can tell that he's grown into a more self-confident person, no longer needing to rely on others' validation and it feels like an exhale from a long-held breath.

[collapse]

This was a surprisingly captivating read. I don't usually like school life stories as I find them a little boring, but here, there's so much psychological meat to cut through and the writing is so enjoyable that it works. Highly recommended. <<less

I love this novel so much. It's not something special, but the characters themselves made the story really interesting. ML is a black flag
