This story really caught me off guard. I went in with low expectations, but here I am, shedding a few tears. Let me explain why.

The FL, Xie Qihua, has a mother who marries into a wealthy family. Her mom, clearly a gold digger, treats her more like a roommate than a daughter

there's no love, no affection, just cold indifference. After the marriage, Xie Qihua meets her two new stepbrothers, and it doesn't take long for them to start bullying her. They pull petty pranks, like smearing mud in her bed and blaming her for it. It's not a warm, fuzzy family dynamic by any means.

Then, tragedy strikes. Her mom and their dad died in a plane crash when she was around 14 or 15. The oldest stepbrother is about 11 or 12, and the youngest is 7 or 8. After the accident, Xie Qihua doesn't feel like she's part of the family anymore. She doesn't even consider the boys as family. She's bitter, and in her grief, she pawns her mom's diamond earrings and disappears, leaving the boys behind to fend for themselves. I think she got emancipated, but FL had to rely on herself before her mother got married, which is why she is so independent at such an early age.

I really enjoyed how the story transitions between past and present. It slowly unravels the history between the characters, and the pieces come together to explain why there's tension between the siblings. During those 2 years without the FL, the brothers, who had been through hell

coming across human traff*ckers, child labor, illness

finally find their way back to the FL after catching her driving while he was holding his feverish brother. The eldest tricks her into letting them stay with her, promising to support her financially in exchange for being allowed for his younger brother to live with her.

At first, the FL doesn't care. She doesn't have much emotional attachment to them. But over time, she starts taking care of them, seeing them more like family, with the condition that they will care for her when they're older.

    -----

Fast forward to when Xie Qihua is 29, and the youngest is 21, while the oldest is just three years younger than her. That's when their paths cross again after many times, and let me tell you, it's not a happy reunion.

Now let's talk about the opening

it really threw me off. I thought it was going to be one of those overly smutty, clich

stories, but it wasn't. The FL is traveling the world, and during her flight back, there's intense turbulence. The plane tries to land several times, but they fail, and when they finally make it down safely, that's when she sees her two now-grown brothers waiting for her.

On the ride home, the FL is cussing them out, especially the eldest. She's sarcastic, rude, and doesn't hold back. But then the youngest brother goes into a store alone, she turns to the eldest, asking if his "sickness" is back. At first, you're like, "What sickness?" But it quickly becomes clear that the "sickness" refers to the eldest brother's long-standing obsession with her. And that's when you realize this isn't just a simple family drama

    it's way more complicated.

From there, things really start to unfold. The FL decides to stay with them on and off

sometimes even for a couple of years at a time. The brothers go off to do their own thing, and so does she, but no matter how far apart they drift, the bond (or obsession) never really fades. The youngest is sweet, emotionally attached, and constantly seeking her approval, but the eldest? He's quietly unhinged. You can tell he's been holding onto this obsession for years, and every move he makes feels like he's been calculating it for a long time.

The FL tries to play it cool

sarcastic, blunt, and emotionally detached. She doesn't like to show vulnerability, but little by little, her walls start to crack. There's this slow shift where you can see her beginning to soften, but even then, it never feels fully safe. That's what keeps you on the edge of your seat. The tension is always there, and you know it's going to blow up eventually.

Now, that whole "sickness" thing she keeps bringing up? It becomes this dark, twisted thread throughout the story.

    Spoiler

It all goes back to when the eldest ML attempted su*cide when he was younger. So when they finally arrive at the house, the FL falls asleep, and she's woken up to the eldest kissing her.

    [collapse]
She snaps, calling him "sick in the head, " and that's when the story shifts to reveal how they all met, how the brothers grew up, and what the FL went through raising them.

It turns out the eldest is way more unhinged than we first thought. We don't fully realize how far he'll go until near the end, when the FL's ex tries to get her back.

    Spoiler

She reveals to him that she's keeping the eldest close not JUST because she loves him, but because she knows he's dangerous to society. She's basically "taming" him. Then, she orders the eldest to kneel as she explains this to her ex. And guess what? The eldest actually kneels. She slaps him

    hard

    and he's still kneeling...

    [collapse]

Before all this, the FL rejects the eldest's advances, telling him, "I would never sleep with you, even when I'm dead." And his response? "I'll f*ck your dead body." At that point, you're just like, "Yeah, this guy needs to be kept off the streets."

LMAO I'm making it sound really dark, but I want to make this as brief as possible, there are more wholesome moments than there are dark ones. The story shifted just a little once you read their past and make your way to the present. The FL is no punk and does not take up any bulls*it. She is not a pushover.

    Now the ending (spoiler)

    Spoiler

FL finally falls into the eldest's trap. She reflects on how there's a story about a woman raising a pet snake, only for it to keep vomiting. She takes it to the vet, who tells her the snake is vomiting to make room to eat her. That's how she describes her relationship with the eldest. Long story short, they're now lovers. But when the youngest finds out, he's devastated. Eventually, the eldest talks to him, and the youngest says he can be the "second wife." The FL smacks him in the head, then tells him he'll need to marry her first. Dude actually comes back with three marriage applications.

Anyways, she accepts them both and gives them dates when they can have her to themselves.

    [collapse]
    HEA I guess.

This story follows the three siblings throughout their lives, even into their 30s. It's a wild ride, but honestly, it's hard to put down. There are no heavy triggers, and everyone is a consenting adult. Would I recommend it? Sure, it's a well-structured book, and if you're into titles like "My stepbrother is a celebrity" and all that, raising the villain stuff, then this is your niche.

The FL is fierce, and while some might question her actions after their parents' death, she eventually softens. She may act tough, but she'll do anything for those two, just as they do for her.

    Spoiler

    RANT

I also want to mention it was this one racist comment that the FL made. It kinda made me chuckle due to its randomness. But she told the ML when he goes to America, get himself a partner, she doesn't care if it's a man or woman, just don't let it be a black person because she doesn't want to wake up seeing a mouth full of teeth... LMAO I CAN'T! I'm black, and that threw me way off. Luckily, I'm interested in this story, and this is a light novel, cause if this were on GoodReads, best believe you will see complaints. Smdh. And for an author that makes stepc*st stories and supports gay rights you would think she wouldn't be rac*st. Unfortunately its not a surprise. You can keep your pe*verted psychopathic brother to your blackened lungs.
