In this latest work by Lord of the Mysteries author, Cuttlefish That Loves Diving, be prepared for a well-thought out and detailed apocalyptic, cyberpunk world with a setting superseding Lord of the Mysteries!

Our protagonist, Shang Jianyao, is crazy—literally crazy, at least that’s what the doctors said. Living in a huge, underground building of Pangu Biology, one of the few remaining factions in this apocalyptic wasteland known as the Ashlands, he acts in unfathomable ways that’s head-scratching, comical, and shrewd. So is he really crazy? Probably.

He has a grand dream: to save all of humanity.

Intricately tied to this dream is something everyone in the Ashlands believes in: Deep in a particular ruin buried away by danger and famine, a path leading to a new world awaits. To step into the new world, one only needs to find a special key and open that certain door.

There, the land is bountiful, as if milk and honey flows freely.

The sunlight is dazzling, as if all coldness and darkness are washed away.

The people will no longer have to face desolation, monsters, infections, mutations, and all kinds of dangers.

There, children are joyous, adults are happy, everything is fine as they are supposed to be.

Every Antiquarian, Ruin Hunter, and Historian roaming the Ashlands knows: That’s the New World.

I don't have a problem with this being slow paced, my problem is the lack of connection to any of the characters, which makes them feel bland despite the author trying to make them quirky and interesting.
Spoiler

I had the hardest time getting to chapter 100; without that deeper connection I have no reason to care about the MC or the team. Instead of discovering the world from one persons views and experience, emotions and growth, we only see the surface of each person. It puts too much distance between the reader and the characters. Maybe it changes later, I dunno.

[collapse]

the world looked interesting but I just couldn't get invested. When you find yourself clicking on random coin pushing vids just to delay reading another chapter, it's time to stop.

maybe I'll try again when the story is completely translated.

Very interesting work, 5 stars!, everything was almost perfect, but the ending just morally killed me.

Big ending spoiler!!! Don't read if you're not sure!!!

Spoiler

When Jiang Baimian constantly listened to this sad dream song (about 300+ chapters), at this time I had the feeling that they would die. They were too lucky all the way, they solved problems perfectly, but, as the author himself noted, such an end was a foregone conclusion from the very beginning.

[collapse]

Very sad and want to cry, but I do not regret reading this masterpiece! Try it!

At first 100chap is slow pace. But not all nonsense thing. If u want to read good mystery novel, you must know about background of novel. I know most of people who doesn't know style of Cuttlefish says slow pace blah blah. If you ever try to read this novel seriously, you will know its worth. Try it. You won't regret.

This novel is like a wine, the more it ages the better it tastes.

Unironically I like this novel more than Lord of the Mysteries simply because of how the author craft the story, it give you a craving feeling and pleasure from finding the truth.

This novel is unlike the other, the main character Shang Jianyao does not have any special ability, his persoanlity are not that great either (thought so for the new reader who dropped the novel impatiently), you could see real time where his personality developed, hehe yeah... more>> developed.

The power in this novel is called awakening, the prices paid are more creative than the author other novel which make the fight a lot more interesting.

Seriously, don't drop this novel or you will regret it. I can't believe lot of people missed such a fine novel. <<less

[SPOILER FREE - OR VERY MINOR SPOILERS]

I just wanna say I honestly think that this is better than Lord of Mysteries. I really don't understand why the rating is so low, at least currently. Different from LOTM's revenge theme, this one is like a team journey to unveil secrets of the world, and I think this is a must-read for fans of adventure genre. The novel starts slow but when it picks up the pace, it's simply awesome.

World building, combat system setting are on par with LOTM. The main rule... more>> for awakening powers is that you gain 3 type of powers, and you've got to pay 1 price. When your 3 powers get stronger, that price you pay becomes more severe. The price can become a strong point or a weakness, depends on the situation; but if it is somehow known and targeted by your enemies, even a normal person with a big brain can wreck an awaken one. There are many ruling powers and cults in this world, and people usually have an advantage depending on one's background, be it genetic alteration, robotic bodies, mech suits, etc.

The author describes team combat and investigation in a very clever way. Each member of the team, with or without awaken powers, contribute substantially to the outcome of the fight. Even when only the main characters have awakened powers in the team of 4, during combat, everyone has something to offer, and that's the thing I like more, compared to LOTM (well in LOTM we don't actually have a team on-site). In LOTM, normal humans can't really do anything when faced against someone with great powers (for example Adam), and this is not a situation here. With a good strategy and combination, even normies can rival against those with great powers.

In conclusion, if you are wondering because many others think that this novel is not as good as LOTM, I say it just depends on one's taste. Just definitely give it a try! And I advise to my fellow English viewers that you should wait until there are 200 or more chapters translated before actually attempt reading, as the initial build-up are actually really slow and may not live up to your expectation. Even I, who love this novel more than LOTM, drop it once after the first arc (<200 chaps available), and start waiting until there are more than 700 chapters to binge read the whole thing back from the start to fully enjoy the ride. <<less

The novel has a really slow start, I'm already at ch 10 and the MC's goal seems like a joke for his friends. Also, why save humanity? His father disappeared then suddenly he wants to save humanity? I just don't see his conviction behind his goals. That's why I really find it so hard enjoy this.

EDIT CH 50. 3 - 2 stars

The MC seems like not an MC at all. He's like the village idiot whereas his only purpose is to be the comic relief, unfortunately he's not funny... more>> at all.

I think Cuttlefish is trying too hard to make the novel as mysterious as possible so he doesn't spoon fed the readers with infos. However, he didn't account that those infos are the ones that would make the novel interestig. So what's left out are boring fluff and a sorry excuse of a world building, with some clarifications after 30 chapter... you'll probably drop this before you reach tjat part though. <<less

So far so good. The worldbuilding is nice. Post-Apocalyptic world with both sci-fi and mystical elements. The novel's setting is grimdark, especially after heading out the base, and is often masked by the comedic conversations that Shang Jianyao and Team Leader has. There are special people called Awakened who can earn three weird powers by making a deal with a higher being at a cost of a "Price", with the price being either a mental illness, social problems, or a monkeys paw. The Awakened powers is hilariously weird, ranging from... more>> being able to make the opponents hand slip to making them forget what happened within the time range of 5 minutes. So far its been interesting. The MC does not have any sort of cheats so far. His powers can only be used under specific conditions just like every other Awakened. There are mentions of gods so lets assume that they exist here.

I'm loving the Main Character so far since I like odd-ball, weirdo characters. Shang Jianyao never ceases to amaze and make me laugh with his behavior. He's intelligent and decisive, yet most of the time he acts like a complete and utter lunatic who likes to clap, laugh, dance and make other people annoyed. His skills at provoking and confusing everyone is top-notch that even the boss-level characters can't deal with him. Burrowing LoTM terms, if the MC were to become a beyonder of the Red Priest "Hunter" path, he would reach sequence 4 under two years even without cheats. I also like the team leader. Definitely one of the best girls I've seen so far who is capable and smart but also quite crazy. She's pretty much the best person who can keep up with the MC's lunatic persona and banters. As this novel supersedes LoTM, I can't wait to see where this novel's settings play out. <<less

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this novel. It is one of the best, til this day I still think about it.

The characters are irreplaceable I'm always searching for something similar but it's a one of a kind masterpiece with amazing world building and character growth.

I read this novel when it was just translated and continued until it was completed.

It's one of those books you never regret reading

Sorry to say that out of all of the three works I’ve read by this author this is by far the weakest.

Magical Arcana was just alright

Lord of Mysteries is one of my favorite stories, but here I am at chapter 65 having to drop this one because it’s simply kinda bad and boring.

... more>> some of the biggest issues is the third party pov, the slow aimless plot, and the fact that it does nothing to generate interest or caring about the characters.

The third person pov means you just get an outside view of 4 main characters but you never get a deeper dive of their thoughts, motivations or reasons to care about them compared to his other works.

The plot is boring and at the point I’m at in the story it’s very contrived. The characters are just going along being

In a nutshell, the novel tells about the journey of Old Task Force around the Ashlands as they complete assignments from the Company and investigate how the Old World came to an end and the origins of the Heartless disease.

While it is not as amazing as LOTM in overall, EAI is still, without a doubt, one of the best webnovels I have ever read. In fact, I find that the writing and characters in EAI are arguably better than his other works. Personally, I find that the MC and FMC... more>> have the best dynamics and chemistry among all the MC and FMC that I have came across, despite the platonic nature of their relationship.

The final arc of the novel seems a bit rushed but the ending, although bittersweet, is apt. Most, if not all, of the big questions are also answered by the end of the novel. There are also some tear-jerker moments in the novel that hit me real hard.

Overall, a must-read novel but I would recommend those who have never read the author's two other novels to start from the other novels first. I think it will help you pull through the slow start of this novel.

Im a slow reader, so my complete reading list only under 10 even though I start reading webnovel since start of covid. So maybe this not a good review. Of course I know this webnovel because LOtM. At first I thought it maybe similar in some sense. Like using guns. I mainly read story about fantasy so the main weapon will be sword of magic. Even in LOtM, its only revolver. The main source of combat still from the sequence. In this it's really talk about modern weapon. My head... more>> throb because of this. I dont f*cking now, complete newbie:). I always have a feeling of dropping this novel, even after I reach 900+. But I finally complete this and im not disspointed. There is the charm in this story that will make u in tears, laugh, sense of belong to the group, even second hand embrassment in the interaction of certified mental pasien:), his amazing team leader, his bad luck friend and his petite other teammate. That charm make me stay. The scene of "for all of humanity" really is touching. Especially the ending. Maybe this is my first complete poigniant ending webnovel. It's touching to the core huhu. Just read this webnovel in passing when you're bored. <<less

but has high moral standards. The female main character Jiang baimian is strong, non-cringey character, she is not the type you would encounter in most kr/cn/jn novels. It's suffice to say she plays a equally important role in the story compared to MC. The other characters long yuehong and bai chen are the couple characters with their own complete stories.

The power system is very unique and well written, it's based on mind powers. So you have thought implants, memory readers-erasers, hypnotisers, all fun stuff. No shooting lasers through eyes. There is technology like exoskeletons and gauss rifles. But the power system is written such that even at the most powerful people can die if they were shot by a bullet, no body tempering stuff.

The ending hit me hard. No plot armor. The bonus chapter was especially made me tear. For people who read it completely

Finished reading yesterday and the first thoughts on my mind today when I woke up was about this story and its conclusion so it obviously left a strong impression on me.

It's a post-apocalyptic sci-fi with fantasy elements and focuses on a team with a mission. If you're like me with a bad case of post-apocalyptic zombie fatigue I can happily say that Embers Ad Infinitum didn't strike that zone for me at all even if it should have. Very mild spoiler: ... more>>

I didn't think of the heartless as zombies and they didn't feel as a central part of the story even if they were.

The humour get's you off guard sometimes and actually managed to make me laugh, and by that I mean a real audible laugh and not that smug smirk you usually get with the accompanying line "yeah that's funny" when reading.

The main cast is great and for me the standout character is Jiang Baimian, she's also a very good example on how to write a strong intelligent female main character without any of the common cringe, accompanying arrogance and unlikeability that's been so prevalent in western media when they try to write a girl boss.

All in all a rewarding journey with great world building and characters you'll come to like and care for which concludes in a satisfying, logical and nearly perfect ending in line with the story. It would have been a perfect ending in my opinion if not for what Emperor Midas touched upon in the spoiler tag of his review.

My 5 stars rating is fully earned and I would definately put this in my web novel top ten. Do yourself a favour and put this in your reading list. <<less

Overall, it's another awesome novel from the author of the best book on physics history, and other masterpieces.

Sometimes it gets slow-paced, but if you're in, you'd never want to drop it.

At the end, things were speeding up, and there was a fear of a weak and rushed ending, or a boring ending like in the physics book, or a possibility of a second book like in the LotM.

Nope. The book has the most logical and right ending. And the epilogue is perfect. Everything is but a dream.

I haven't completed it yet, and I still intend to, but I just want to put down this review while inspiration is pumping through my veins.

First of all, the plot. Cuttlefish has never disappointed in this regard, and it's always a joy of peel back the layers of mysteries surrounding the characters and the world they live in. Coupled with the various existences that ensure the main characters encounter an 'accident' even if they're just drinking a cup of water, there is hardly ever a dull moment in this book.... more>> While there are complaints about the slow pacing, I have never felt that the story dragged. The same is true for Lord of The Mysteries.

The setting is rich and diverse as always, with multiple factions---both large and small---and vivid descriptions that paint a clear scenery no matter the location. I can tell that massive effort was put into the world building, and each settlement, faction, religion, and even bandit gang, has their unique customs and beliefs, all of which are influenced by their environment and history.

As for the characters, it was also a pleasure to join them on their journey. Each of the main characters have their goals and dreams, and they developed & matured quite well. The only gripe I have is with Shang Jianyao, and that's not because of his personality or anything, but with the way the author chose to present his actions. Perhaps it was a result of his mental illness, but I sometimes had the illusion that he was a human version of a plush toy. Squeeze a little and it will immediately squeak. Many of his actions or words were very... abrupt. That, coupled with the various adjectives/adverbs that accompanied him---words like immediately, suddenly, quickly, impatiently, interrupted, rushed---gave him a sense of urgency that I didn't find in other characters. It's something I could gloss over most of the time, but it definitely ticked me off on many occasions. In fact, this is the main reason a star was deducted.

This, coupled with the fact that we readers are not privy to his thoughts (and the thoughts of the other main characters, actually) most of the time (at least, not until much later when his different personalities emerge), means it's difficult to get attached to him on a deeper level. But I can definitely say I was terribly curious and desperately wanted to know all the mental gymnastics going through their heads.

In summary, this is a book I believe fans of LOTM and maybe World of Cultivation might enjoy. There are plenty mysteries to chew on, lots of worldbuilding to marvel at, and developed characters to fall in love with. P.S., Jiang Baiman is best girl. No questions asked.

Final verdict: 4.2/5. Some may love it. Some may not. Some may get to love it eventually. <<less

Superb!

Fascinating power system, exotic post apocalyptic sci-fantasy, thought provoking, emotionally present.

Enter the world of Ashland, where mutations were rampant, vagrants and bandits roamed the world, big organizations covering secrets of humanity's downfall in the cataclysm. Unlike the rest of Cuttlefish's protagonists who were gifted with cheat, Shang Jianyao was only a little bit special than most ordinary humans. He's just another cultivator/awakened of thousands awakeneds throughout the land. He's just a little bit lucky, statistically lucky even.

I really love the developments of each character, they were fully fleshed with their... more>> insecurities, worries, strengths, and destinies. A warning for those who dislike traffic story, because you might not like how this story ended.

I came to the conclusion that this novel was simply a collection of the cuttlefish's idle thoughts. It was a due variety of reasons, one of which is to enrich and improve his experience before the second book of Lord of the Mysteries.

The reason why I gave it 4.5 stars is because of the simple idea and the solid execution. Even though the overall experience was limited due to the simple concepts, I still loved it and I would recommend reading that if you are now lost and searching for... more>> an excellent novel to read after many. <<less

My review may be a bit spoilery about the very early world-building stuff, so be warned. One thing though; do yourself a favor and listen to Dvorak's New World Symphony while reading the ending of the novel.

Embers ad infinitum starts off a bit slow, and keeps a slightly episodic style throughout as the main characters go on missions and get closer and closer to their goal. The story is set well into the post-apocalyps, where rebuilding has started, and different factions rule over huge territoties. But it is still a... more>> very unforgiving world with bandits, s*avers (some factions are built upon it), starvation, nuclear wastelands etc. Most people have no understanding of how the old world's distruction happened, and we follow a taskforce of 4 people from one of the factions tasked with uncovering the truth behind the apocalypse, which is a very important question, as it may provide a solution for a problem that keeps humanity from truly rebuilding the world. Their personalities, relationship and personal philosophies are well fleshed-out, their conversations being very amusing. Shang Jianyao deserves an exclusive mention, as it is very rare to see a mentally ill protagonist, who worked living with it out perfectly (and is truly hilarious).

All in all, it is a great read, though sometimes it can get slow or depressing, but the hype at the end of each mission truly balances it out. It "discusses" quiet a lot of philosofical questions, with each of our protagonists (and some side characters) having their own understaning of them. This gives place to some really great character development.
Spoiler

My only true problem is with the ending; while Hey and Big White's journey makes sense, and is really great (howewer heartbreaking), Little White and Red's deathes were not really needed, and it kinda felt like they have been killed off for a quick closure. Chinese webnovels are chinese webnovels, after all. The ending has to be a bit rushed at least.

What is the "point" of the novel? Am I just sitting here practising reading comprehension, maybe participating in some imagining of what a post-apocalyptic world may look like? Is this a post-apocalyptic slice of life? Even in mystery novels I "get" what the mystery is. "Well sir I have read the entire novel and I know what the mystery is." This is definitely one of the best-written things on here that I've read. It starts off a bit slow and doesn't just info dump everything, but you slowly learn about the world and the characters. Some things are predictable and some aren't, but they all flow together well and there weren't even any plot holes that jumped out while reading.

There was a lot of good comedy (often related to the MC's insanity, but also many other things like certain cult rituals) which somehow went perfectly with the overall dark world.... more>> It goes from lighthearted jokes to rapist mu*der robots and civilian massacres all while keeping you engrossed in wanting to learn more about the world and its history.

I'm usually not a huge fan of righteous protagonists, but him being a certified mental patient makes me actually enjoy him. I also usually dislike MCs that ignore romance, but again the craziness (too busy saving humanity for a wife) makes it not bad when combined with the author actually being good at writing and not having every woman he meets mindlessly throw themselves at him.

This is definitely one of my favorite novels, and I honestly can't recommend this enough as long as you enjoy slower-paced mystery / adventure type stories. <<less
