A gentle, highly-emotional-intelligent chancellor who rose from humble beginnings vs. a cold, enchanting, and temperamental princess. The female lead is morally ambiguous, while the male lead has a mind as intricate as a beehive:

One day, while revising the national history, a historian sought to document the story of Princess Danyang and her husband, the current Prime Minister Yan Shang.

The princess sneered, “Between him and me, at first, it was nothing more than a relationship of ‘subordinates overstepping their bounds’ and ‘superiors taking advantage of inferiors.'”

The prime minister smiled gently and said, “That part doesn’t need to be recorded in the national history.”

The prime minister reflected further: “At the beginning…”

________________________________________

It all began after the death of Princess Danyang Mu Wan Yao’s first husband. She traveled to Lingnan to heal her heart, staying with a local gentry family.

On a rainy day, amidst the ceaseless patter of rain, the princess was awakened by the sound of someone reading. She parted her curtains and saw a handsome young man studying fervently by the window. Through the misty rain, his brows resembled distant mountains—broad and serene.

Captivated, the princess fanned herself and leaned close to whisper teasingly into his ear: “If all you do is memorize blindly without understanding the essence of the texts, lacking both conviction and eloquence, and if you refuse to network despite having no influential family background… even if you study like this for another ten years, you’ll never pass the imperial examinations.”

Under the dripping rain, the young man looked up, blushing under her gaze but feeling grateful that this princess finally showed signs of being human.

Years later, thanks to her guidance, the young man rose to prominence in the imperial court. Eventually, he married the princess, became the prime minister, and earned unparalleled renown as a statesman.

Wow, this one. So this is the first work I've read by this author, and they really love writing imperfect characters with personality flaws. This isn't just an arrogant, overbearing princess + a little white scholar romance. The princess has legit trauma. She escaped a political marriage in an enemy country and is not "c" as the kids say. You'll start out really not liking her. ^^' There were so many times reading where I was about ready to throw her out with the bathwater, but the male lead has... more>> the patience of a saint, so I was like, ok, he's able to deal with her, so can I lol.

The male lead seems like a pushover... he's just so damn nice. But he's also got his own self-esteem issues and struggles (how to be a pure minister? It's really impossible). The novel takes place over 10 years and you'll get to see both leads slowly mature and grow as not only individuals but as partners. I liked the male lead a lot; he was really relatable. He wasn't perfect or overpowered (he's a little dull emotionally, super shy, and can't write a poem to save his life), but he's also extremely intelligent and knows how to work the room, the makings of an excellent minister.

There's also a great cast of side characters you'll find yourself rooting for (and crying over.) The further I read, the higher my initial rating rose. The politics and war plotlines are well balanced and engaging; I never got bored. The pacing was good too. I loved seeing the OTP grow. It definitely takes a while before they get their HE, but don't worry, they will.

TLDR: Imagine if the "evil" princess from The Double met an (unmarried) scholar whose unrelenting patience and love ended up changing her for the better and healing all her wounds. <<less
