Even the Beautiful Blind Airhead Needs to Be a Cannon Fodder?

Ye Man is the real young master in a novel where he is supposed to be the villainous cannon fodder, overshadowed by the protagonist who is loved by all. He is gloomy, insecure, and full of mischief. However, the system notes:

System: Wait, why is he blind?

The system instructs Ye Man to steal from the protagonist, Chi Jue. Full of bravado, Ye Man goes to confront him, only to hear the protagonist’s complicated and helpless voice from behind:

Chi Jue: “Xiao Man, let go of Mr. Xu first.”

Ye Man awkwardly feels the solid chest in front of him.

Ye Man: “Oh no, I’m doomed.”

Next, the system tells Ye Man to drug the protagonist’s fiancé to create conflict between them. After finally locating the room and administering the drug, Ye Man is suddenly grabbed from behind:

Man’s Voice: “Drugging someone right in front of me? Do you think I’m dead?”

Ye Man shrinks back:

Ye Man: “When did you come in?”

Xu Huaiting: “I was here from the start.”

System: : )

It turns out that Ye Man, the beautiful blind little pretender, cannot be the villainous cannon fodder. He is better suited to be cherished and carefully protected.

Honestly, the plot is pretty cliche and ML is the typical “I fell in love at first sight” kinda of man and the MC’s character is confusing.

BUT, despite all that, I couldn’t put this novel down. I found myself cheering for MC, feeling heartbroken for him and wishing him a good life.

The beginning was very confusing- I didn’t know if MC was really dumb or just scheming (as he himself say). There were misunderstandings that made people like him and all those were cliche but it was also endearing to... more>> see how other people started to love and care for MC

Ultimately, I think it’s worth reading <<less

4.5⭐️

The premise of the novel might be nothing new, but several aspects made it stand on its own to be a good read, first and foremost being the MC.

The MC is a lovable character. He’s introduced as being flawed, petty, and holds grudges, and he is all of those things, but at the same time, he’s more.

... more>> If someone shows him a little bit of kindness, he’ll forever remember that kindness and return it tenfold.

If someone earns a spot in his heart, he’ll protect them and care for them as best he could.

Throughout the novel, we’re shown that the MC is a product of his environment and experiences, and, in fact, despite being arrogant and accepting of his flaws, he has a low view of himself and his worth, mostly seeing himself as his flaws.

However, truth was, without noticing it himself, he was a person who loved fiercely and showed kindness to those around him, and had gained the love and care of the people by his side.

Most of the novel is about the MC healing from his past and slowly learning how to see beyond his preconceived notions of himself and his worth.

The ML was also pretty good, he’s decisive and knows what he wants. Seeing that he’s falling for the MC, he pretty much doesn’t hide his intentions and feelings, so much so that MC knows the ML likes him despite them not saying it in words.

Spoiler

There was a scene in which the MC was being confessed to by someone else but he didn’t see it that way. The ML told MC that he was being confessed to and MC’s reflexive response was something along the lines of “Impossible! If he likes me, he should act like you do”

[collapse]

The ML was also someone the MC could relax with and not have to pretend in front of, which was important since the MC often puts up a mask to make himself likeable as a way to survive.

In the ML’s words, “There are so many good people in the world, but I don’t like any of them, I only like you.”

In short, this novel is a good romance and character focused story.

I also like how the “Novel World”’s protagonist, aka the MC’s new second brother/the fake young master, was actually a good person. Usually in novels with premise like this, the OG Protagonist is villainized.

The MC’s biological parents on the other hand, are useless and the MC’s elder brothers (including the fake young master) acted more like parents than they did.

The mother did have some scenes and had a realisation later on in the series regarding her relationship with the MC, but overall, they might as well not be there.

The background conflicts regarding the ML’s past and family weren’t given much focus, which I wish they had been, but it’s fine, it didn’t affect the story that much though it could have added more to the ML’s character.

Either way, this was a good read! <<less

This novel has made me cry so many times, my eyes are like walnuts right now. 😭 Every character is so well-rounded, with their own personalities, motivations, and experiences that realistically shape their thinking. I adore MC, ML, the OG!Protagonist, the System.

The author's prose is poignant but not flowery — they don't waste words, each statement is concise yet very impactful.

The author doesn't TELL us that MC is loved but they SHOW us. Through the little thoughtful actions of everyone around MC, we find out how very much loved he was.... more>> And I'm so happy he realized that in the end.

I honestly thought the System would be relegated to a mere background presence all throughout. But in the latter half of the story, he really shined through. He is the first System character that made me bawl like a baby.

One critique I'd like to make though is about MC's biological father, who is practically non-existent in the story. We got some POV from MC's mother but not a single paragraph from the father. I just feel like he deserves more screen time as a foil, given MC's abusive not-father 🥲

I will let this story break my heart again. <<less

The story is alright, but the MC is what makes it a 4 stars.

The ML is the usual rich, powerful, cold, handsome,... But he has emotions and is not afraid of communicating them, plus the author is really good at crafting her characters' personnalities. You understand what they think and feel. It's quite rare for this type of ML to have feelings other than possessiveness, but unexpectantly, the author did gave him feelings. So even if that's the only difference with the usual ML template, it gave him a little... more>> life.

The MC is a scheming, pitiful, adorable white lotus, he could be a dumb villain that has to be face-slapped in another story. But here, the author explains to us why he only knows how to act like a victim, cry prettily,... and must be loved by us reader. He is simple and complex, naive and scheming, good and petty and the reason I really recommend this novel, especially to those who like a good crying.

The plot was finally more about the emotional journey of the MC, even if the villainous cannon fodder part was fun, but the ML's family revenge was a copy/paste of all the other books. The lenght was just right, unfortunately I didn't find the extras. <<less

This is a really good novel! For me, it was so much fun to read! When I first read the synopsis, I didn't expect the MC to be such a pitiful child. He has gone through so much, and it completely broke my heart. Honestly, as I kept reading, I couldn't stop thinking that someone should take him to see a psychiatrist. But in the story, no one seems to realize this in the present timeline. Well, I guess the author has their own way of developing the plot.

But I... more>> really love his "white lotus" personality! If he were in another story, he would definitely be the villain, but in this novel, it's actually adorable and funny. To be honest, after reading this, I started thinking about other novels I've read where the villains had a similar personality. It made me wonder—maybe those villains had their own hidden backstories too? 😄 As for the family aspect, I think it's quite realistic. A child who grew up outside—when reunited, it's not easy to instantly trust or love them, at least in my opinion. I believe they did their best. They didn't completely abandon the MC, but their lack of attention in the beginning still made me feel sad. I really like how this novel presents things in a realistic way. MC feeling jealous and disliking the fake young master is understandable, and I love that the fake young master isn't portrayed as a villain. He's actually another character that I like.

As for the ML, I love him and truly appreciate his existence. Our little MC feels comfortable and can be himself when he's with him. He takes such good care of him. And lastly, I can't leave out the system—I absolutely adore it! Out of all the systems I've read about in novels, this one is my favorite. It's the most caring and considerate, always looking out for MC and indulging him. Of course, I'm truly grateful for its presence. It has helped MC so much whenever he was in pain.

English is not my first language, so there might be some mistakes, but I decided to write this review just in case someone is looking for opinions before reading, just like I did. I hope my review helps you decide whether to read this novel! <<less

I Love the growing dynamic between MC and ML. ML indulging and indulged in MC. MC also getting more closer and comfortable and feeling safe around ML.

The OG! Protagonist Shou already doesn't painted as Bad person. While MC himself also doesn't painted as 'Good' person. This truly shows such Flawed people, Flawed Family, but does not necessarily bad.

I love how MC doesn't realize part of his Characteristic truly made people care about him even after all the Shenanigans he had created.

MC doesn't painted as Naively Innocent Good people, but he's... more>> not actually Bad people either. He's absolutely Flawed and he knew how Petty and 'Villainous' he can be. But the fact he had gone through Sad Past and he unconsciously endure it. All the basically past trauma he hide. It made me feel so sad for him...

I wish his family would find out how he had gone through more than just a simple poverty. And he also still have the heart of gold who cares about the people or place he truly care and not just a simple Selfish Uneducated person.

Though I can't say his family is Evil nor Bad. Just doesn't do their research deep enough to realize MC's deep personality.

I really hope the rest of the story would give us satisfactory till the end! 🙏🙏🙏 <<less

my first time writing a review.

all I can say is that I truly wish this was longer, some people may dislike the MC for being foolish and silly, but honestly thats probably my favourite part of the story. I love how the MC isnt an op person whos heart is made of unbendable steel. I just love how the MC is so realistic, so emotional, and so lifelike. I love how mc's past isnt just something the author wrote casually to let the MC gain pity points, I really love... more>> how you can clearly see the marks mc's past has left on his current personality. This story was just amazing overall. The author did really well imo. I love how the side characters arent just paper people and have a real purpose and an actual personality.

well that was a lot of "i love how"'s but really wow I hope everyone can give this novel a try, it may not be your cup of tea but imo its great

(p.s. Sorry for my bad english, its not my first language 🙏) <<less

This was a lot better than I initially imagined. I'm not usually fond of airheaded MC's but this was done so tastefully that it rides the line of being a fool and naive, almost perfectly. You can tell that the MC isn't slow but just that his limited life experience has only given him very specific skills and understanding of the real world so that most of his common sense knowledge of high society and of dealing with bad guys is based off tr*shy dramas.

This novel is done so beautifully,... more>> honestly. I cried so much reading this. I never expected anyone to be able to write a system novel to be so heart wrenching to the point where I even loved the system. The systems are usually written as like playful idiots or just normal boring AI, this was a first to read one that ends up treating his host as a son. ;; I also want to agree with another poster. The author didn't give the MC trauma just for the sake of drama, but planted very realistic scenarios and outcomes of what he went through with his father. The overall development, the wrap up and even that emotions of it all was done so well.

I also loved the ML, I honestly thought he would take the normal CEO route and while it was similar, I love that they showed just how in love he was to the point of feeling pained and even crying on his lovers behalf. That's really rare or at least I've never seen it done

I genuinely recommend this novel. Give it a try, it really does a great job at standing out. <<less

If you need something short and sweet with little to no conflict, this is a good read.

Don't expect too much from the characters, they're all pretty flat except for the MC.

The romance between MC and ML is very smooth-sailing that nothing really big happens.

This novel makes one have mixed feelings. In the first chapters, I couldn't help but cry and laugh at the same time because his antics and tricks are hilarious but sad at the same time because of how he uses them to try gaining his family's attention. I can't help but empathize with him on his situation.
Spoiler

He failed to finish his education, he's got an abusive father, he's got no mother, he has to pay his father's debt and he becomes blind due to a reason related to his father. After all he's been through, he comes to realize he should have lived a carefree life in a rich family but due to an exchange at birth, his fate was changed and now he's got no one to blame. Even when playing tricks on his exchanged brother, He's still quite self aware about his narrow mindedness but he can't quit yet because it's the only way to cope with the bitterness brought by the unfairness of fate

[collapse]
But as one gets used to it, one can't help but get annoyed. I understand that he's cultivated this way of getting sympathy as a way of survival but why does he needs to keep doing it even when he's not completing missions. He does it so often that I don't even know whether he's acting or not. I get annoyed everytime he cries for no reason, his actions are so effeminate even more so than a girl and so unrealistic, I'm pretty sure no guy in real life would behave the way he does. But maybe in the latter chapters it gets better because most of the reviews are quite positive.

I was not planning on commenting but I do want to defend MC in this one point, that I do t think he’s the typical Mary/Gary Sue character or one like that at all... I think all the love he has now is really because of his actions and all the suffering he has gone through, to now finally receiving all the love and care he should have enjoyed from the start.

It’s been a long time since I’ve cried that much reading a novel, and I do think that that... more>> says a lot about this story. As others have said, I also believe that MC‘s character is really well written. He’s not perfect and he’s trying hard to change, his trauma is not revealed all at once during a „let me vent about my trauma“ session but revealed little by little throughout the story, mainly through MLs efforts and MC slowly opening his wounded heart to other people. I also think it’s quite well done that his trauma is not exaggerated but just mainly focuses on one thing
Spoiler

his abusive father as well the guilt he carries due to his fathers actions at one particular incident

[collapse]
idk makes it more believeable but all the more pitiful...

Anyways, I think by implying that MC here and the story altogether is a typical Mary/Gary Sue story with thick plot armor is really undermining all the efforts MC has spent to survive until now...

Regarding MCs „real“ family

Yup those „parents“ don’t deserve to be parents, neither for the big brother and „fake young master“ not for MC. They didn’t do anything raising their children, and it’s mostly the big brother doing all the work, all the worrying and whatnot. It’s said that he feels at ease the most if he’s in control, but maybe that’s just authors excuse to make it more make sense ^^‘ regarding the fake young master... hm I’m glad he’s actually a good guy. They were both babies at that time, so it really isn’t his fault, but I do understand if some people are dissatisfied with the outcome of the story, that he can still enjoy all the benefits he got „in-stead“ of MC. I think it all comes down to the parents decision and actions which makes it so unbearable. They think they solved it simply by talking through the inheritance problem without looking deeply at what kind of past the lost child had led. I remember how the mother said, that when she first learned of this child swapping incident
Spoiler

of how annoying she found it. And... it suddenly made clear what kind of character she had.

[collapse]
honestly no matter how hard she or the so called father cried, I wouldn’t have felt sorry for them. They maybe did the bare minimum by bringing MC back to the family, but looked down on the environment he grew up in and what kind of person (they think) he’s become. They didn’t try to sit down and talk about his past, didn’t try to understand or idk, like some other rich people in novels with money would do, let investigators dig into MCs past. It would only have cost them little bit of energy to find out the kind of man MCs „father“ was to know what kind of life MC could have led... anyways altogether I think especially the parents haven’t suffered enough for their inaction. Tbh I think, if I was the mother, and found out my child was swapped, the one I carried for 10 months and had such a hard time giving birth to. I missed all the precious moments of my child’s childhood and they’re already an adult now. I would very much love to know what they’ve experienced, how their life was, if they suffered and try my best to reconnect, OR AT LEAST make them feel like they have a family that cares and they can put trust in!!! Argh... they don’t have to kick out the „fake“ one, it’s true that after so many years a bond has long been formed, but at least give more preferential treatment towards MC?? Them thinking that letting MC „bully“ the „fake“ is indulging in his antics is... utter nonsense. If you see it, talk it out. If you see it, make him have more trust in you. You also have to understand that if you see someone life the life you should have lead... you’d probably be more vicious and jealous than him. Honestly I wouldn’t have minded if MC just cut ties with this family altogether. It was all ML anyways, that solved his trauma :) I feel like he was the most heartbroken when hearing MCs story and I’m glad he was there to be MCs support.

That’s that for now, I think it’s a great story, the portrayal of MC was really well done and it’s really so rare to be so immersed in a story so I definitely recommend this one. Although I ranted quite a bit, but it’s really really good! <<less

I love the main character and his depth. This is definitely more of a character based story than it is plot based. Which is why they should have dealt with the side characters with more care and detail, but still I love the main character. The ML is not a complete disappointment either he's different even if he fits the mold of the typical dominant man. He's from Sicily and has a family creed that gives his backstory some interesting points. The main character is the crown jewel in this... more>> story not because they're all powerful but just because they're so different yet so human in a lot of way even great novels fail to achieve. The way he actually shys away from any real mentioning of his past trauma and prefers giving exaggerated or fake responses in a bid for pity is so much more real to me than any badass main character giving an empty soulless recounting of their pain or the resilient main character recounting their ab*se with a white lotus smile. <<less

it's a bit repetitive, but I actually quite like the family conflict. MC, the real young master, was an abandoned child who managed to grow up a bit crooked but mostly fine. He disliked the fake young master (now acknowledged as his second brother) quite a bit and often harassed him (understandable since the family naturally favored the second brother more, including assets ownership). Originally the family was tense because MC kept framing his second brother but everyone gradually loosened up when they realized MC was only capable of pulling... more>> annoying harmless pranks. I like that they don't get along right away; the family was already slightly disfunctional with the first child basically raising the second child. The children were self-sufficient, then came MC who diligently made a fuss partly because of his missions. Mc's mother's apology summarised the family's unease
Spoiler

"I'm sorry. I've missed the time to love you unconditionally." MC replied "i won't love you unconditionally either."

[collapse]
. I like that their familial love needs hard work to grow and bloom.

cringeworthy descriptions about ML in the earlier chapters (lmao) and random italian aside, ML is very good and patient with MC. He saw right through MC, doting, and firm when he needs to be. <<less

MC carried this for me. He's an interesting character, and in any other novel of this genre, he would definitely be one of the antagonists. Reading from the POV of basically an actual canon fodder was pretty interesting. He's so complex — faking everything, while also splashing bits of truths here and there; playing the victim, but also an actual victim; thinking he's extremely smart, but also everyone knows what's going on. He's smug, unapologetically childish at times, but also has every right to be so. His backstory is extremely... more>> sad and pitiful. I cried several times.

ML is very gentle. That surprised me. However, I didn't find him incredibly interesting or anything. I was more invested in the family, and I wish there was more development between MC and his brothers. They got a lot of screen time, but it seemed like in the end, the focus remained more on MC and ML's side of things, and everything else was just a formality.

The story itself though... I didn't even feel like reading the extras. The antagonists were promptly deal with. I felt like that part was a bit rushed, because the author wanted to focus on romance, slice of life and character growth. I get it, but could have been executed better. <<less

MC is clearly Gary sue and ML is kinda the basic trope tho he's not a red flag imo

The story is a bit boring, I wouldn't recommend if you're looking for an interesting plot but if you want something sweet and easy to read I guess give it a try

I can't bring myself to continue it any longer because of how plain the whole story is but the beginning wasn't bad

There was a line that struck me... it was along the lines of Ye Man not being able to himself in front of others, thus why he hated being around people but he also couldn't be without them.

If I had to be honest, the plot is mediocre. It's a switched-at-birth, cannon fodder breaking out of his constraints sort of story. But the characters make it unconventional. MC is flawed, extremely human, & undoubtedly overbearingly precious. For the most part, the main characters in this story are interesting. They're not... more>> as textbook as I thought they'd be, which made the story more entertaining than expected. ML is my type—tyrannical with everyone else but doting & loyal with his lover.

Happy ending though a lot of loose ends were haphazardly tied up. I'm just grateful that our cutie MC is enjoying his life. <<less

I loved this book so much, I have never commented or rated anything on here before but I loved this so much I had to show my support. This is amazing. Every facet of the story ties into the plot- the foreshadowing is really good. All odd aspects in the story have an explanation; all the characters are amazing and well-rounded. I really loved this story. I don’t often rate 5 stars, but this is amazing. Will definitely re-read once the extras are translated.
