The photographer Lin Hao was on a shooting assignment in the ancient city of Lintian when he was attacked and killed by “ET No. 002”.

After being reborn, he found himself transformed into a koi living in the Dragon Transformation Pond in the neighboring ancient city.

He awakened the Dragon Cultivation System, which promised him a chance to become a true dragon by following the system’s prompts to devour and evolve continuously.

After Lin Hao died, he was reincarnated as a small carp. Coincidentally, a catastrophe struck Earth, with mutated creatures, ancient behemoths, and indescribable things hidden in the deep sea emerging one after another. Activate the system, devour, evolve, and leap over the dragon gate to transform into a true dragon!

On that day, amidst the mysterious descent and the siege of giant beasts, the Hualong Pond shimmered with golden light as a massive black dragon soared into the sky!

People exclaimed, “There’s a real dragon in the Hualong Pond!”

It's a very light read for me, there is a grinding process for the evolution but the progression is frequent enough that it doesn't seem repetitive so far. The setting is a little vague, but with the protagonist being a fish and thus confined to rivers and lakes this can be forgiven, it would be worse if he simply became human and made the premise pointless (looking at you Monster who levels up). The scenario seems to be slowly being built with a background mystery, which leaves me with expectations... more>> about how things will develop with the spread of mutations, really curious if it will go towards modern cultivation, hunters and dungeons, apocalypse or another route.

The only negative point to me so far is that the protagonist's evolution speed is a little slow, his personality being kinda bland and shallow, and the progression not being that notable in the actions themselves, at this point he seems to be approaching a capstone (chapter 52) so I have expectations about whether it will there will be the first leap of power or not and what it will be like. <<less

I was hooked after reading the manga version and wanted to read ahead of it. Good thing there's a webnovel available to read. Its always interesting to read how much different does the novel and manga hand holding differs to each other. The MC died from a monster attack, woke up as a fish and finds out his world is a lot more dangerous than he believe it to be. At least MC reincarnated after a few days of his death and in the same world universe. The manga ver... more>> has a system guide to help him to figure out the world and the prizes after completing task but the webnovel is a lot more self intuitive and figured his condition and surroundings better to evolve to become a human longer to speak to his lover. Can't wait to read the next chapters <<less

It's junk food in novel form, hahaha, but who doesn't want to eat junk food every now and again? It was insanely fun for a few hundred chapters, but where I'm at now 400+ chapters in, I've begun to feel like it's getting a little repetitive. Still, I've had a good time and I've really enjoyed the worldbuilding, too; it's a fun take on the monster/alien genre.

Downsides: The author is very good at action but the characters are all pretty flat - MC is a complete cardboard cutout. And although... more>> I do appreciate the non-harem romance for once, I'm not quite sure I can tell you anything about any of the other side characters other than 'belongs to X organization'. There's also some nationalism being sprinkled in now that I've gotten to the global stage, but it's not too bad and should be expected with modern Chinese novels anyway. <<less

Really enjoying the story, managed to binge 100+ chapters in one go.

The translation quality is great so far, I haven’t noticed any obvious errors or awkward phrasing.

The pacing feels good, with progression being made in the MCs system every few chapters.

... more>> So far, none of the big fights felt like they were dragged on for too long, even when done over multiple chapters.

The MC has been unreasonably lucky in the actions taken by random 3rd parties, but those peoples motivations are explained well and are believable, so it doesn’t feel forced.

The slow apocalypse setting is interesting, it feels like we will actually get an answer as to why this is happening unlike most apocalypse stories I have read, although from what we have seen so far it doesn’t seem to make sense that it is happening gradually instead of all at once.

Have not seen too much of the MCs personality so far, but he has expressed concern for his parents, and his girlfriend from before his death is introduced early on in the story, so presumably at some point he will be able to communicate with people and we will get to see more of who he is. <<less

It's a solid 4.5 stars for me. When it comes to guilty pleasures, monster level up/evolution systems are right at the top. But it's hard to find GOOD ones. This is probably the best example I've found.

The action is fun and exciting, and the evolution is gradual, with new weapons and abilities added and modified one by one. It definitely slows down the pace, and it has the effect that every single victory feels satisfying.

I like how they used the premise of an evolution/mutation apocalypse to justify the appearance and... more>> development of stronger enemies, as well as the incredible rate the MC has to devour creatures. In most monster novels, the MC would be an ecological disaster, but here, EVERY mutated creature is an ecological disaster. It's a race against the clock to destroy and devour as much of thousands of years of evolution as possible before everyone else does it anyway.

There's also an overarching plot to keep a timer going for our MC, as well as an actual motivation for the main character other than simply 'be strong'.

I just like this series. It's translated well, it's a nice action monster evolution story, and it's perfect for a long read binge. Comfort reading for me. <<less

evolution is an old formula that works pretty well, don’t know if I love the system part of it but maybe they’ll do something more with it going forward

the interesting part is that it’s set in modern society and actually done very well so far and getting better which is very rare for Chinese stuff.
