A simple, but easy read - overall for me a 3.5/5

Synopsis: MC is a model without a company at the moment due to some personal issues, unfortunately, when he catches the eye of the ML who is painting him. They enter a contract relationship where MC lives with ML as his muse and model while MC is developing his career as a model (and a bit as an actor).

MC Liang Jin: A 23-year old model who is a straight forward person who approaches the ML once he sees him painting.... more>> He claims to be a straight guy but starts to find himself moved by the ML. I enjoy the fact that he is an easy going person who says things as they are.

ML Ji Xiuyuan: In his late twenties, he is half French and half Chinese. His mother was a French painter while his father (who has passed away by the start of the story) was the owner of a company. Although he is a painter, he is also the CEO of that company which makes him the tip-top of society essentially. Personality-wise, he is the typical black-bellied CEO in my opinion. I think he lacks a bit of dimension as the most you ever really see of him is jealousy and lust once he is interested in the MC.

The reason for my rating is that I think that this story doesn't have a lot of development or character growth. MC is introduced as a beautiful model that is able to get into his emotions and role quickly which leads him down the road of acting. That being said, the scenes for both modeling and acting aren't really deeply talked about. But per usual he slowly gets more traction (both in his modeling and as a result as being the boyfriend of the ML) which allows him to gain awards. In my opinion, ML's character is very flat and I largely just find him jealous and h**ny for MC. I wish we could see him grow in some way but it really doesn't happen. In addition, I personally wasn't a fan of the side couples in the story (I thought they were a little toxic if I'm being completely honest). They didn't really add much to the story for me.

I think this is a fine read if you are in the mood for something light-hearted that does not take much brainpower. There was minimal drama so I was surprised the story lasted as long as it did. I thought the story should have ended around chapter 50 and it felt like the story was dragging until the end. That being said, I still think this is worth reading if you're not expecting anything groundbreaking or deep. <<less

So nice! (≧▽≦) Although it's moving too fast and the time/ setting in the novel is always not specified. I need to brainstorm for myself and guess how much time had already passed in the novel qaq

Update: The author's writing is kind of immature. (My opinion, still, it's nice.)

And I want to say thank you to the translator! Thank you for your efforts. I appreciate it!

They are together as of now. The ML is very possessive. The s*x scenes fade into black but that doesn't make this novel lacking in any way. Although I would have preferred smut.

But their love is very intense and they way that they get together is very natural. So far there is slight drama and it makes it interesting instead of plain dog food, although I don't mind that.

There is an upcoming side cp ig. Their relationship also is very healthy considering their financial differences. I am looking forward to complete this novel.

I am dropping this mainly because of the immature writing style.

If you have read more than 5 or 6 of the most popular bl on this website (MXTX novels for example) then you can kinda see how this one isn't all that good.

The synopsis is pretty tempting. It made it seem like a hot romance with small nuances here and there but that's not really what it is.

It's kind of like how you read an enemies-to-lovers romance and just lose interest when the couple gets together. It's kinda like that... more>> with this novel. The interactions went from interesting to straight-up cheesy dialogues just being shoved up your face and not in a good way.

If you are looking for a cheesy couple who get together quickly, are in a healthy relationship, and have all their problems solved because they are rich and handsome and don't care for the way it's written then this story is really for you.

The writing flaws that seem to make it hard are

1. The fast pace.

It makes it difficult to properly understand the changes that are happening in the story. The MC and ML in my opinion should have taken more time to get together. Because of them getting together early, the rest of the story seems like a chore to get through.

2. The bad dialogue

The dialogue doesn't seem good. Characters are just straight-up saying paragraphs describing situations that would have worked better as narration instead. I have never been a fan of cheesy dialogue much. So the interaction between the MC and ML never interested me much.

3. The straightforward writing style.

There isn't a lot of nuance in what a character is doing or saying. It's all pretty straightforward.

4. The side characters

Till the point of what I have read, the side characters don't do much. There is a potential side ship but it doesn't seem worth continuing to read this for.

The point at which I am dropping is when the MC and ML have held a wedding ceremony.

I feel like this story could just end here and keep the stories of the side characters as extras.

It's not like I don't like a cheesy couple or a healthy one. I love stories in which the main characters are together from the start and I can see how their dynamic is. (Like Mr. Melancholy).

But that doesn't the characters can't have trouble which don't involve their relationship. <<less

I love the concept of this book! However, at the moment I don’t think it’s executed very well.

As much as I want to root for Liang Jin and Ji Xiuyuan, I can’t, which is a surprise because I usually am empathetic towards most characters in novels. I think this is because:

1.) There is no clear motive for either protagonist. They are just floating around and are not being very proactive. It’s more-so that the world pushes them to take action to move the plot forward, or they take action as an occasional reminder to the reader of their characters as model and painter respectively, rather than the protagonists actually living out the story.

2.) The novel is very simple and is “badly written”. I am unsure if the author has this type of writing style, or the translation is unable to translate the emotional depth and description across language barriers, but the novel is extremely straightforward in the sense that it lacks nuance. It is weird how the personalities of the characters are slightly convoluted whereas the the writing is very straightforward. Maybe in another novel would this have worked to achieve a sense and mystery and intrigue, but the way this was executed makes the book boring to read for me. The characters’ personalities, feelings and thoughts are spoon-fed to me, rather than shown throughout the novel.

To be honest, the reason why I put apostrophes on “bad writing” was because the writing itself is not bad. Rather, it’s just incompatible with the premise that was promised. I think what would improve the book would be to just describe the scene a bit more- the book is fast paced, but for characters like the alluringly strange Ji Xiuyuan, I think it would be better if the book slowed down its tempo for the readers. I think this would make Ji Xiuyuan interesting to comprehend. From my impression of him, Ji Xiuyuan is an enigma. He has a range of personalities and switches between them based on his mood and inspiration as a painter. The writing style of the book is fast-paced, which makes Ji Xiuyuan’s changes feel too abrupt and takes me out of the book. It’s difficult to create the illusion that he is an actual person like this! Instead he is rather like a book character with no/an inconsistent personality. It’s as if the author had tried to fit in many ideas and tropes, tried to make it work despite the contradictions, but made it over incessantly complicated. Thus by slowing down the tempo of the book, it makes Ji Xiuyuan‘s decisions, thoughts and actions more deliberate. Making him more interesting to explore.

I hope the issues I have with it is just because I have just started reading the novel and is just unfamiliar. Or it is just a translation mishap (although I think the translator is doing a good job!) because I really adore the premise and I like the thought (though not the execution) behind the book.
