I'm the translator and I, like a lot of you, have read quite a lot of WN's and LN's.

Like a lot of you, I realize there are few ORIGINAL WN's out there. I'm proud to say this is one of the few.

Charles is a s*ave when he decides to finally leave behind his life and Master. He himself did not choose to be an executioner but was forced to by his lazy Master. He sets out to kill himself and before he can he encounters a girl named Himari Lanfer.... more>> Himari yells at him and tells him to be careful before leaving as quickly as she came. While retreating, she accidentally drops a letter that is a sort of "ticket" that allows her entry into a very prestigious magic academy named Yunferno Darts. Realizing that he should do one last good act before he dies, he sets off on his journey to return her ticket. This journey ultimately results in him understanding his goal to abolish the death penalty and doing everything within his power to do so.

This is a novel mixed with mystery, revenge, romance, academy and so many other elements that, when put together properly, make it an awesome experience. There's character development and no one's a cookie cutter character, everyone having their uses. The main hook for me though is the protagonist. While he does maintain some higher level mental (& physical skills) he still does need to learn along with everyone else, as he has been so far away from society for so long. The story really starts to kick off at v2c1 and I hope you all read until there.

A very original and unique novel in a genre that's been extensively explored. I can honestly say I have never read another novel with anywhere near the same overall feel as this one. The setting has loosely been done before, the magic system is a very modernized one with magic trains and guns and cars so it's also been done before, the MC is a s*ave which is quite uncommon but it's been done, and the MC is completely abnormal which again has been done. But I have never seen... more>> them ever combined like this, it leads to a really indescribable feeling story.

I definitely recommend giving it a read, it's an odd one, but entertaining and deep feeling. The translation is also great too. I'd love to give a better review, but it's just such a weird world I can't even think of how to begin describing it. <<less

This had a really interesting and unique concept but its execution leaves much to be desired.

I don't think I could even call this enjoyable tr*sh given that it was too confusing to read when I turned my brain off.

Pros:

    • Interesting concept
    • Fun magic academy setting (personal bias)
Cons:

    • Idk whether this was the author's fault or the translator's, but the writing is really bad. Examples include:
    • Poorly described physical settings. They were so badly described that I often had to re read multiple passages only to realise they didn't make sense even after I read them. So then I just had to fill in the blanks or unexplained bits in my head.
    • Bad pacing
    • s*upid cliche 2D characters: "comic relief s*upid best friend", "tsundere perfect girl", and "cocky but useless teacher-bully" (think Gilderoy Lockhart) so far
    • Actually braindead dialogue - for example:

      ""That movement - you're still a student. I'll teach you the absolute rules in the school. It says, 'Students must not go against the teacher.' Students should absolutely obey the teacher. I will give you the death penalty at the school, that is, expell you!"

      Is that truly the death penalty?

      Certainly, I have no place to go when I leave this school. Expelled = death penalty is not a mistake.

      "The only way you can remain at this school is to beat me. If you beat me, you go free. I'm not s*upid enough to unveil me losing to a student to the entire school."

      A wolf head butts me in the stomach.

      "Tsu!"

      "Hmm, but.. It is impossible for students to beat me! That is, you have no choice but to be expelled!""

      • This last one is purely my personal opinion, but I feel like the modern setting ruins the fantasy aspect. I was so shocked when I was imagining a medieval fantasy setting when I suddenly saw the words "got hit by a car".
      I might edit this review later if the story gets better, or if a different translator picks it up and somehow fixes the story, but I'm not holding my breath.

The author tries really hard to be tragic and interesting, but fails badly due to terrible pacing, dialogue, and writing. No time is spent on developing the magic system, the characters are cartoonishly flat, and the lack of logic is just nonsense.

A couple of basic examples of the lack of logic:

Why would the character show up to his executioner work to kill his lover with his own hands when they're clearly fine skipping work other days? After killing her, why wait several months to run away on impulse with no plan, money, or food? Later, while you're running away, why chase after someone who was incredibly rude to you to deliver something they dropped when you literally say you think you're dying? You might think, oh he's a s*ave in a world with magic, so maybe he was compelled with magic... but no, there's no mention of that, and the fact that he can run away at all is pretty compelling evidence that's not the case.

Most annoying feature of the whole web novel:

The main character feels the compulsive need to say random things to his dead lover in his mind every few paragraphs, because heaven forbid you forget how sad their life has been.

Also, if like me, you read the description and thought maybe the main character absorbed skills or something from the people he's been forced to kill and was on his way to being OP--prepare for a letdown. The only things he has going for him are he's physically strong from normal body training and he can cast one magic passed down by executioners.

The premise of the novel is unique where the end goal of the protagonist is to abolish the death penalty which is a plus for me. As it reflects our modern world where the death penalty as a punishment is highly debated and controversial. But for how the plot is going to go that is still unknown, its a good read but I don't expect too much.
