Yan Suizhi, the young and accomplished dean of the interstellar Maze University’s law school, wakes up in a body that has been gene-modified to resemble that of a twenty-something-year-old. He had supposedly ‘died’ in a premeditated explosion a few months ago but someone had managed to save him. In his search for his saviour as well as his mu*derer, Yan Suizhi encounters his former student, Gu Yan, who is now a successful lawyer at Southcross Law Firm.

I liked the novel overall, I recommended it if you are looking for something not dramatic but still interesting with a comedic undertone. Although the novel is long, I would dare say that the story is light, so it doesn't take too long to read.

The MC and ML are both charming, you also get to care for the side characters. Their relationship is also cute and not actually a slow burn so you get to enjoy their interactions a big portion of the story. I wanted more of the side... more>> couple though, I hoped we would get more of them, especially since they are an important part of the story but I felt like they suddenly disappeared towards the end and missed more of their development, so it was a shame.

Spoiler

What about Ke Jin's recovery? Did he get to know how much Joe cared for him? How did he react? How did their relationship develop? WHAT ABOUT THEIR CUTE INTERACTIONS? I want more of Joe and Ke Jin!

My favorite part was the first half of the novel, the first part totally gripped me! It was a very interesting scenario and the clues appearing hooked me. I felt it was a bit rushed towards the end, not because of the plot's lack of coherence but because I felt it was more superfluous compared to the beginning, and some things/characters that seemed relevant suddenly were left behind.

Spoiler

Sometimes during the second half I also felt like the main characters were too OP so there was no longer surprise or expectancy of how things would go because the MC and ML were too smart and too over the top of things so you knew things were going to go well

I liked the ending for the main couple! It was all I wished it was <<less

Thoroughly enjoyed the sharp tongue and biting wit of the MC and how the court scenes played out during the course of the novel. Appreciate how the plot unfolds with each arc layer peeling back the mystery of the main underlying plot of the novel. There were some unexpected twists but I wouldn’t say that they brought me a lot of joy/excitement/whoa when it was revealed.

Written very well as a whole, with sufficient dog food scenes and realistic (almost OP) levels of charm & smarts from the two leads. Great... more>> backstory and character building. World building as well to that end.

I guess I enjoyed it more as an action novel than a romance novel. Some hehe almost butterfly but not yet moments earlier on. Find myself wondering what was the main spark between the two leads now that I look back. But they go well together chemistry wise, it’s just not emotionally very gripping as a novel.

Side character and plot build up was really good too. Worried if anything drastic or bad would happen but most of it was quite smooth sailing, just continuous face slapping from the MC although uncovering a lot of sad past truths.

Would re-read for the engaging court scenes and fun jibing between the leads. Not so much if I want a more emotionally invested novel. <<less

3.5 stars. Overall it was good. Easy to read, comedic, fast paced, and has good interactions. Just don't mind the details too much.

The cases were good but I feel like the author didn't want to get into too many technical/law details so the court sessions wrapped up rather fast. Especially with the final case - it spanned most of the novel but was wrapped up in a few chapters.

The first half of the novel was a lot better than the second half. It was a lot easier and more enjoyable... more>> to read. I had to take lots of breaks reading the second half because there's a lot of long-winded conversations and a lot of details that weren't very important or interesting.

The main couple is a shameless shou X silent gong bickering couple type. We're fed lots of dog food. However one thing that started to bother me was that it seemed like MC was getting more and more unreasonably arrogant and rude in the last quarter of the novel. It gave me a negative vibe compared to the "confident and intelligent arrogance" that he had earlier in the novel. <<less

So, I finished the novel (sobbing and creating a tear-induced lake in my flat because it's only been 34 seconds and I ALREADY MISS THEM).

Yan Suizhi is such a cutie, I can't. Sarcastic, cute, kind, with a passion for teasing his pettymint essense and driving him crazy. This baby of mine was so cute and funny I want to reread the novel right away, but it's a pitty i've got an exam in 2 days. :' ( And estimed Lawyer Gu, this utter softie, who loves his wilful Dean to the... more>> death of him, just can't leave the cutie alone. It's impossible to not love these two. BUT I LOVE THE WAY THEY'RE HEAD OVER HEALS FOR EACH OTHER MUCH MORE.

Thank you for the beautiful translation, btw. It was a great experience reading it. <<less

Excellent novel that takes place in a future interstellar world where two lawyers investigate the truth behind an explosion that ‘killed’ one of them. The MC Yan Suizhi is a completely shameless and charming former dean of a prestigious law school who masquerades as a law intern. The ML Gu Yan is an accomplished lawyer-slash-human-icicle that has been assigned to handle the MC intern. The couple dynamics are gold - their conversations are entertaining and there’s a lot of snark and sarcasm whenever they open their mouths.

The first half of... more>> the novel is mainly building the background story and introducing all the relevant characters and the second half of the novel delves into solving the overarching mystery.

Although the court cases the two lawyers encounter are important to the plot, the details of the trial proceedings are enough to give you the main point but not so detailed as to be tedious. The legal system is ultimately different from any current legal system so the procedures are different and the speed of the trials are fast.

Well-written story with a great group of side characters. Personally, the pace in the first half of the story was a little slow for me but it picked up in the second half and I love how everything came together at the end. There is also a sweet side couple - truly the cherry on top! <<less

Now that was Amazing!

The writing was beautiful and love, love how the story was executed.

The MC and ML characters were chef's kisses that I fell in love with the more I read. They were very subtle most of the time, but for some reason that just made me root for them even more.

One of the BEST, BEST, BEST novels I've read in a while.

Everything was perfect for me.

Spoiler

Yan Suizhi's shameless, poised, elegant, and scathing demeanor along with his kind selfless self was a perfect match with Gu Yan's cool, strict, poised demeanor and trademark paralyzed face. The way they bickered with each other, and the longing, love, and care in their relationship were so heartwarming. I did not find anywhere where they professed their love to each other verbally but I guess it was simply unrequited when action speaks better than words.

One of the best pairs of main characters!!!!!

I just finished reading this novel, and I must say, it's superb. ✨ I've been hooked from start to finish. Though, as usual, now I'm suffering because I've completed it...

A certain dean by the name Yan Suizhi and his mint, Gu Yan, was truly a joy to read about. They practically stole my heart and a few tears. The side characters have also been very likable. The romance, although slow, and the humor have been very tasty and right up my alley.

Highly recommend that you check this novel out!

Would say it’s 4.5. Dragged a little because the interstellar medicine and laws are new to the reader and fictional so the details were a bit hard to follow and boring. But the Dean was very lovable and smart-mouthed. Love his character. Lawyer Gu was a little less developed - though his loyalty, love and smartness shone, there’s little else to him

This was the second novel I read by Mu Su Li and definitely my favorite (so far). Sci-fi and mystery? The novel was practically made to be my favorite, because those are my favorite genres of media in general. The worldbuilding aspect of this was probably one of the best parts to me--the level of immersion I get into the story determines how much I enjoy it and Mu Su Li created a fantastic setting. Onto the characters: LOVED THEM. Characters and character dynamics go insanely good, and my favorite... more>> is Joe. His dedication and loyalty is insurmountable and I love his character. The main CP are smart, so smart, and idk about you, but I love a smart CP and the court trial scenes were so fascinating to me too. As expected of MSL, the foreshadowing is incredible and piecing together everything was an experience on its own.

My sole gripe with this novel was that I wish there was more of Joe and Ke Jin's characters post main story because they are my faves, and I also wish that the resolution of the story was longer in general because the buildup was so, so long and elaborate and I was hoping the resolution would be similarly balanced to match the length. No matter though, because it was a

It starts slow, it takes some time to get into it, but the mystery is superb, MuSuLi's writing is top-notch, the facts, and the way the plot is revealed to you is an EXPERIENCE. Seeing the pieces fall into place was SO GOOD.

But more than that, MuSuLi is excellent at creating characters you have no choice but fall for, they're deeply complex, flawed and so life like that it hurts. I ended up loving both Yan Suzhui and Gu Yan, but also Miss Fitz, Lin Yan, Joe the little fool... more>> and Ke Jin and rooting so much for them, Joshua Dale and even Miss Laura and Miss Eunice.

It's my third novel from MuSuLi and I can certainly say I love all of them. <<less

Found this to be an enjoyable read with both a good translation and the original author doing a good job constructing an internally logical plot with decent suspense and a lovely romance. No one turning off their brains for drama here!

I did find the conclusion to the central mystery to hinge on too many coincidences, so I'm not the plot was actually successful for me, but worth a read.

A lengthy read but beautifully written as expected of Mu Su Li. This has become one of my favorites. The translation was great, kudos to luckykoi.

The MC and ML are well matched and their interactions are humorous due to MCs teasing and quite sweet.

The world building was quite good and the plot tight.

5 stars for this amazing book.

Well-written story with good character developement, good-pacing, and presentation to technical law jargans that doesn't drive me to sleep. There's no major action or end-of-the-world suspense; just simple events that retain my interest enough to finish the novel in a few days and will re-read.

A few major points I appreciate about this novel:

  • The characters are MATURE - meaning that they are grown adults who act like grown adults. The OP aspect of MC and ML are justified because of their up-bringings and prior experiences. Any comments of naivety, outstanding luck or capabilities were played on the fact that the MC is supposed to be a "intern".
  • the realistic representation of a lawyer's life - not every case they cover is the ultimate finaly. The very first one covers the defendent

and after they complete the trial, they move on to other cases. This initially left me hanging, frustrated that the whol story wasn't concluded. Then I realized how most novels and shows focus on the primary trials to give the audience a wrap up to all cases and this is not realistic.
  • The banters. In part, it's great chemistry, but it's build on a foundation that they are both lawyers and retorts has been ingrained in their blood.

Fantastic author, no surprises here.

Really enjoyed the relationship between the main leads. I would say most of the story is carried by the mystery of the bombing before the MC unveils his true identity, and then followed by the wonderful tension between the various members of the cast.

I found myself tearing up or growing great empathy for many of the cast members, which is the hallmark of a good story.

There are a lot of mysteries and twists. Unfortunately, I wasn't as drawn into the cases/court appearances as I would have... more>> liked. Being a huge fan of Ace Attorney, I thought I would enjoy reading about the court defenses, but unfortunately, the majority of my interest was more captured by the day-to-day office politics and intern shenanigans more than the characters appearing savvy at court.

I was slightly disappointed by...

Spoiler

how the bombing case and the Sweeper's background was handled. I thought that both cases would have a stronger presence in the story, but the bombing was pretty much wrapped up in a few sentences, and the Sweeper had very little relationship with the main cast. So all of that off-screen or non-personal connection made some of the twists fall short and the climaxes were lacking as a result.

We're never told what the Sweeper's motivation was, his personality is as ambiguous as the various disguises he's worn over the years, so it was very difficult to view him as more than a 2D psychopath. Which made his character stand out as sadly flat when everyone else had been fleshed out so well.

If we could have gotten a little more of that personal connection or some kind of non-fake interaction/motivation, it would have been especially impactful during the final twist and reveal at the end.

[collapse]

Overall an excellently translated piece. <<less

Let me get one gripe out of my chest first before I dive into a brief review.

I wish there were more court cases in this novel. That's it. That's the only gripe.

This is a rare all-in-one story where you truly do get the genres you came for. Romance, mystery, sci-fi, comedy, etc. And all that not overly done at all. The way it's intelligently narrated was a feast for my sanity. When I like a novel, I tend to just lazily read along. When I really like a novel, I... more>> just dive in with gusto. I finished this in one sitting and didn't even skip any parts - which I tend to do when things in a story get dragging. The cases are over-arching (except for the first one) and drives the plot with no fillers to bog it down. This was quite the refreshing read and a definite favorite for me. Especially with the characters - main and supporting ones - being quite endearing. <<less
