In their previous lives, Su Yin, her mother, and her sister-in-law were brutally mu*dered by a mob. In a twist of fate, all three were reborn together.

Before the mob could reach their village, they escaped. On their journey, they encountered a foolishly filial father who had been abandoned by his family.

Initially, they thought he would be a burden, but he proved to be surprisingly perceptive and ruthless.

In the capital, they met their twin brothers, who were initially naive and kind. However, one became cunning and deceitful, while the other grew cold and heartless.

“Tell me, what were your identities in your previous lives?” The foolishly filial father replied, “I was a puppet… emperor.”

The second brother turned away, “I was the Ninth Thousand Years!” The third brother, his face cold, said, “I was the Lord of Shadows.”  Su Yin was astonished!

I translated the raws and sadly, it's only updated to chapter 306 as at Nov 24-2024, however, the story is meandering nicely with an intriguing and broad plot. You will need to hang in there because the first arc deals with Su Yin and her family's flee from the refugee mob and their various escapades along the road to and until their arrival in the capital (which serves as the beginning of the second arc, I guess). Frankly, I can't wait to see how the dad navigates his former playground... more>> and how SY grows into what I can only imagine would be a formidable business woman and or political strategist. All in all, good things to look forward to. Top stars. <<less

  • "The second brother turned away, "I was the Ninth Thousand Years!""
In case you're wondering what the summary means, 'Jiu Qiansui' (Nine Thousand Years) is what one calls a Head Eunuch who is so powerful that they're considered second only to the Emperor himself. The title comes from how emperors are styled 'Ten Thousand Years', to represent the wish that they might live forever.

This novel - at least the first half - is good. It's very, very good. While the FL is strong enough physically, she's more importantly very smart and... more>> perceptive, and has the little added supernatural benefit of precognitive dreams that allow her to avert a life and death disaster... which happens very often. You're holding your breath for a good chunk of the first half of the novel, knowing that of course she's not gonna die, she's the FL... but the circumstances around her are so dire that she usually only manages to scr*pe through with luck and ingenuity.

The second half (after the return of FL's two brothers) is much weaker than the first half and a little bit too smooth sailing. It's not bad exactly, but it doesn't grip you since the author is more concerned with showing what's going on politically rather than in the character's lives. Most of the side characters (the villagers, etc) you know and love from the first half are retired and never seen again, except for the main character and her family, and there's a lot of time spent on villain characters you never cared much about. There also aren't any epilogues and it could have really used a few - the climax is in the last two chapters so it's quite abrupt. In short, it's kind of like skimming over a book to get the plotline done.

As for the ML... there isn't one lol. I was rooting for a candidate for awhile but the second half of the story was quite clearly not interested :)

Downsides: While I'm very grateful to the translator for bringing this story out to the light, the SF translation isn't great. A lot of the names and titles get messed up and it's quite hard to follow. I recommend reading this story through Google MTL instead if you have a good Adblock. <<less

A rare fleeing-from-famine novel (I've also read "She Picked Up an Emperor on the Road of Refuge" and "The Amusing Adventures of a Directionally Challenged Dad and Daughter" in this genre).

In ancient times, the officials are corrupt, harvest crops have failed because of drought, and villagers are forced to flee and become desperate refugees.

FL is smart and resourceful. After she, her mother and female relative are mu*dered and reborn, they plan their escape to safety.

So far, the other reborn characters haven't appeared yet, and FL is still traveling on the... more>> road. FL helps her people avoid danger, and slowly gathers quite a following of good people who trust in her and her razor sharp judgment. I can't wait to read more of the story.

Update: I MTL'd to the end of the 494 chapters. Her dad and twin brothers are reborn, and the storyline splits amongst their different viewpoints as the plot follows them each separately to the capital city where they get involved with

the princes vying for the throne. It's a happy ending.

Con: Like many other novels, the story starts strongly focused on the FL and her daily struggles. By the end of the novel, the plot expands to other characters and larger plots, and the FL is barely mentioned. I wish the latter part of the novel had stayed focused on the FL and her village neighbour's slice-of-life daily matters more, as the happy ending is kind of abrupt. But I still enjoyed the novel overall. Oh, and there is NO romance.
