The third year spiritual energy was revived, humanity got swept into a real-life game of oddities, 《Folklore》.
The game randomly extracted from strange stories for its quests: If won, the quest’s boss would turn into a guardian deity, holding back all sorts of evils; If failed, the oddities would completely revive, and the area implicated in the quest would completely fall to enemy occupation!

As it had impact,
The players participating in the quest and the stream audience hated idiots who were burdens the most.

Unfortunately, when a disaster-level quest got unlocked, matched into the quest, was this,
Silver-grey long-haired, pessimistic, sickly, when others fought he slept, when others ran he showered
No matter how much more good-looking they were, it could not conceal that “I don’t want to live, everyone die with me” kind of anti-social air

When his data was pulled up:

Everyone’s eyes went dark, GDI, this isn’t even enough for a bite for the boss!

Yet no one knew, Wei E once was drawn into a different, much higher-dimension UF world
Over there, there would be a small quest every three days, and one big quest every five. Each quest would be stifled with a manic hopelessness, driving people to their deaths. No player was able to hang on for three years, and Wei E was the first who had a chance to live past three years—— after he bombed the Creator.

When the Creator’s space was collapsing
Wei E reminisced these three years of endless fighting for his life, and strongly vowed: If there was a next life, he would definitely not get mixed in it again!

Once Wei E opened his eyes, he returned to the familiar blue planet
But before he could get excited, he discovered…… the Creator followed him out too : )

By the fifth day, third day, each day, there would be people on the forums calling themselves Wei E’s dog.

On the final day, the Creator really grabbed Wei E’s throat, with his voice dark and frenzied: “I said, I would kill you sooner or later.”

However, seeing Wei E’s wearily curled lips, He thought, I perhaps should change the method.

I've been a long-time reader of unlimited flow and horror for a long time. I've also read most of the books on unlimited flow and games and let me tell you, this is a gem. First review and it would be this one, rather than a more popular or completed book. Any of those books are good, but this one has a different storyline you can see from the beginning. It has mixtures of "I became a god in a Horror game", "The Earth is Online", and "Thriller Trainee". All are great books to read but from the chapters translated right now, you can see a really good plot and suspense. There is not lots of romance currently and it is focused on adventure and solving mysteries. The book isn't completed but it's worth it, would even MTL more because it's so good. Thank you translator for what you do 😊

Main Characters:

From the synopsis, it's already interesting as the MC Wei E already experienced an infinite world and just wants to go back to his original one. But the main god came out with him? Now that's new. It kind of describes what happened in that infinite world before and shows the MC's feelings but other than that, right now there isn't a lot. Wei E after getting out of the infinite world shows a realistic view. Not OP right away and solving things by the second. It shows what happened to him and how it affected him, with him not trying to act all fine and accepting support. He isn't all perfect and shows it.

ML has appeared and currently from the translated chapters has few scenes but he is important. But this is very Enemies to Lover, like the most in the whole of danmei. It is rare to read enemies that have this strong of a hatred, its bone deep.

Games:

The setup is really interesting with different levels and different games around the world. You can see that the world-building is good plus the games are inspired by the province and folktales. There are underlying themes and you learn more about China's historical culture.

Characters:

Right now, the characters outside the MC have personalities and most have a background. Seeing that, some probably won't be insignificant and shows the author puts in effort to develop and provide a background for the characters. Recommendation: Would recommend it, even though it isn't completed!

??? Am I missing something, but writing not good at all? There is a lot of random events with random solutions and only then given explanation why this solution works, or why this event is happening. For example, boss randomly attacks MC, MC randomly buys a item that helps, and then we given explanation why item works. Was it hard to write a setup and payoff? I am not gonna be surprised if next moment aliens show up, because with book logic anything can be explained afterwards. And there is... more>> not enough exposition or explanations, that why author can write any random thing, because nothng was established.

My second problem - plot holes. MC was in bad health condition and can't even walk himself, but if he dies monsers will be strengthened, why his teammates didn't give him medicine from the start? Like his "holy father" teammate was OK to give him a high lvl weapon for his ptotection, but gave him medicine only after he was even more injured. (but after taken it, MC can walk, so what was the point not to give it from the start???) Was medecine rare or cost a lot? he cannot improve his health? Not enough information again.

And third point - author more focused how beautiful MC is, from 15 chapters I know how thin his waist, how white his skin, how red his lips, how sexy he is when weak... but not much about his character? It feels very superfitial. I don't get why it has high rating, not my thing, I guess. <<less

It feels very early to make a review, but with how long this looks to be ongoing, I’ll leave something here first.

TL;DR: Fantastic story, consistent with what I love about the author’s storytelling and writing. However, given its length, there is patience needed to fully understand and appreciate what it’s about.

As the title of this novel implies, this story largely involves exposure of scary stories, old customs and beliefs in China with an unlimited flow game as the medium. However, rather than be the sole focus, they are background elements... more>> to a bigger overarching story, which was probably what was meant with the note from the author that this isn’t a typical UF.

In that vein, I feel it is pretty important to set some expectations: We aren’t going on a sight-seeing adventure. While the “games” largely take place in areas less explored in your typical historical period dramas and hence feel a bit “novel”, from what I gather, this story is ultimately about

Reclaiming people’s homeland, reclaiming people’s sense of a home. Rather than be a novel about gradually powering up and upgrading one's circumstances to a life of luxury, the end goal is to return a sense of security and a future for everyone, which was robbed by the onset of a dangerous game, propelled by the revival of the paranormal. Which, now mentioned, doesn't mean such characters don't exist in the world, but they are not the MC here. The motivations behind our MC’s actions too, are rooted in the goal of taking back his home, and recovering that which belongs in his home, including family.

As a long novel though, there is a good amount of patience needed to fully enjoy its story and find the underlying themes to it. Consistent with other works from this author, the story takes time to reveal things at the appropriate moments, rather than dump inordinate amounts of information at once. Not only does it take its time, only once have the readers gotten the basics down, does the novel move onto the next part and build upon it.

For example, generally speaking, the first thirty (or forty if you are to include the epilogue bits to the first arc) chapters serves to give us a basic introduction to the world in general and our MC (plus a small peek of the ML). It feels very much like a solo quest, despite the fact there are other people around. His characterization is put right front and centre, but that doesn’t mean no one else or anything else from the first game mattered. Small hints foretelling events in the future, important recurring concepts are all interspersed throughout. While side characters don’t get much action yet, they do have their own dedicated time later on that properly fleshes them out, again when the time comes.

The next fifty or so, then will build upon that foundation from the start, and so we see more people being added to the spotlight, and also get a peek (finally) into what will be the trajectory to the relationship between ML and the MC. You will also see that sort of pattern with the later arc (s) as well- once we start establishing the general relationship between the main cast, we will slowly see focus shift onto other characters and slowly build upon them.

On the relationship:

Just to get this out of the way: We are here to watch the ML get stomped. Given how hostile the MC/ML are to each other at the start (and well justified), it’s probably a wonder how their relationship will turn out. I know this novel is tagged as “enemies to lovers”, but even I and many readers of the original novel have doubts if they will actually reach that endpoint. But we also have strong faith however it turns out will make sense, so I'm not particularly worried.

Given where the novel is right now though, it wouldn't be surprising if this goes beyond 1000 chapters. That's how slow the development is, but make no mistake, each step in the development has been an exciting read (and as another reviewer mentioned, s*xual tensions are through the roof between the two).

Outside of the slow romantic development, I do find their dynamic pretty fun though.

Despite the mature character the MC holds on the surface, the ML unexpectedly brings a childish side out of him- granted, the ML acts pretty childish too. We see the two get grossed out from being touched like the other one has cooties at the beginning, trying to gross each other out instead like how there's always one kid chasing someone with a bug they found on the grass. Both of them do slowly learn and adapt tactics against each other though, in forms of unending new ways to degrade one another, so readers never know what to expect next.

I've only read until chapter 13 of the novel since jjwxc locked the other chapters exclusively for VIP members. Hopefully, in the future the translator can translate more than the chapters I've read so far, but since there are no reviews published yet, here's my take of the novel:

Story:

It's good so far. It has the typical plot of "Main Character transported into a mission-related instance that may or may not involve Live Streaming but has a mysterious past on why he's so smart, powerful and strong and face-slaps every cannon... more>> fodder that underestimates him". Although that statement may be confusing, it's somewhat true. (*cough* Super Natural Movie Actor APP *cough* A Crowd of Evil Spirits....)

Characters:

The Characters aren't one dimensional. They have clear distinctive personalities that help distinguish them from each other, not realistic personalities though, but temperaments that help show that the novel cares about it's characters.

The Main Characters:

I'm surprised how so far I've read there's barely any out of the ordinary thing the MC has done. Aside from his unordinary appearance, naming the exact places around him and that one time he came out of the blood-shield-test first, he hasn't really done anything that surprises the other Characters or do something OP, which I really like. Don't get me wrong I LOVE strong protagonists, but it's really not logical expecting MC to be fully-powered after his fight in the last world with the LG. The ML meanwhile, I'm pretty sure hasn't appeared yet so I have no opinion of him up to this point.

Overall, 4.4/5. <<less

I agree with Rakutau's review, the MC, Wei E, seemingly encounters situations where he would conveniently get the necessary stuff to clear the dungeon, clues seemingly attracted to him, and monsters would target his ass. However, the more I read I can somehow.... rationalize it????

Wei E (Protagonist)

He was imposed a condition or a condition wherein he automatically pulls the aggro on all the monsters in it. He is not very OP as you'd imagine him to be. Yes he is strong, but he carefully analyzes the situation before him... more>> and struggled countless of times with the monsters (especially that ONE monster) as he deals with the special condition the system gave him.

Yes there are plot holes. The MTL was a bit hard to read and understand but it is doable.

I can't give any reason as to why he always stumble upon the right prop to trigger a hidden branch line story or conveniently get the prop needed to further progress the story except that it is a plot device by the author lol.

His appearance gives off an intimidating aura, he won't hesitate to get his way, one way or another. But he always returns favors and is pretty cute.

I love Wei E so much, I wished the author didn't mention how his silver hair stood out, how red his lips are and his eyes in every paragraph.

Him as a character is charming and I love his scuffles with *redacted*.

The Lord God that followed him from the previous infinite world. We met him in the first instance but a bit later into the story. He is bloodthirsty, he doesn't care about humans, he calls Wei E 'ant'. When I found out that he's the male lead, I was a bit mad. Wei E deserved better than someone who constantly puts him in danger and broke the current infinite game's barrier (?) And occupy the first instance's boss only to kill him.

I was sceptical whether romance could bloom. But so far i've been treated to SO MANY unresolved s*xual tension. Whenever these two are in screen, there will be blood, blood-sucking, threats of eating, threats of enjoying the other's pain while holding each other and in an ambiguous pose.

*redacted* or Shen Lang (??) (There's a rule where you cannot say, hear or see his full name, or any other God's name as it is a taboo.) Is super possessive and he likes.... Wei E's neck so much lmaoo. More semi-strangling than hand holding istg.

And this UST is seen by Wei E's team so... way to go lovebirds we don't need to hear Shen Lang saying Wei E's mouth could be used in many other ways, one of them would be moaning in pain ugh.

And also.... lots of kabedon HAHA.

Supporting Characters

Xie Yuanzhen:

MY BOYYYY OUR DAY ONEEEEE!!!!! He is a true Holy Father aaaaaaa! He is strong tooo sobs I love him for always being there for Wei E. Wei E still uses the knife that XYZ gave him and I always smile when Wei E mentions the knife every now and then.

Xie Yuanzhen is so endearing. He is selfless I could say (for now). He is a taoist who is super aware of the things around him and notices strange things that our MC also notices. He was a beacon of light before MC's appearance and still is even after. He's very rational and his words are able to bring relief to his team. I give a big kiss to u XYZ♡!

Others:

Other than XYZ, Tang Qin and Chen Cheng are cute. I'm not gonna lie to you folks, they are not very impressive. But eh, maybe because I haven't gotten to the meat of the story yet!

System, Game Mechanics and World Building:

It reminds me so much with The Earth is Online with how they didn't really get dragged into another world but more how those worlds invade ours. If you fail to clear these instances, it will manifest in real life and create a forbidden are for humans to live as the legends and myths came alive.

It is interesting! I love it so much and a breath of fresh air too. I love seeing the way the world respond to these events and it has a livestteam mechanic too, so the reactions of these viewers are so entertaining hahaha.

The instances are hard, you have to struggle, observe and alert. A lot of ordinary people that got dragged into the instance die often. Mortality rate is high, so people like Xie Yuanzhen, Tan Qing, Wei E, Chen Cheng, and others who survive these instances are worthy of respect and awe. It is so hard that half of the players are more likely to be wiped out in the first hour.

I love how it didn't make it easy for our MC too.

Maybe it's the translation or the author, but it's hard to imagine or understand what's happening in the story.

The way the author wrote the culture, setting, and terminologies often made me lose focus on the story because they're not explained well to a person who has never heard of these things before. Yes, I've heard and seen some of the words before in other media and novels, but most of the terms feel like they were just thrown at me as if it's expected that I should already know these... more>> things. Like if someone is a new reader of a novel like this and they barely know anything about the culture, they would scratch their heads and drop the novel just as fast. Because while I want to read something, I don't want to research about the topic while in the middle of reading a story. It just feels exhausting.

The MC isn't any different from other Cold Protagonists in Unlimited Flow stories so I don't feel anything about him either. Yes, he's cool and pretty but his personality is often either angry or indifferent.

The story feels like it's lacking something that makes it alive. While the first arc was bloody and brutal, I barely flinched when it was described. The mystery surrounding the deaths in the first arc was supposed to be intriguing but instead made me feel bored and impatient.

I tried to read the next arc but I just can't force myself to read anymore. So yeah, it's 3 stars for me. Sorry. <<less

This novel is sooo good, especially the third arc.I thought I wouldn't be able to read it because it's about 200 chapters long? But I couldn't tear myself away from it😂 luckily I didn't have to work during Christmas holidays. Stakes in this story are getting higher and higher. It may seem like any other unlimited flow novel, but it always has something to surprise you with. The dynamics between MC and ML are captivating, every meeting creates tension full of hate and passion. Even after 400 ch they are still enemies and that's good. Finally, real hate to love which I was waiting for all my life. As you read, you understand perfectly why they simply can’t kiss kiss and fall in love. ML is evil, very arrogant and very much not human, he is happy to kiss (eat?) MC and also happy to torture him at any moment. He considers MC his property and most delicious dish. MC doesn't agree with that, of course. He would not be able to tolerate all his impudent antics which endanger not only his life but also the people around him. Both are very smart, very arrogant, one hot and one cold, they confront each other all the time. My blood pressure took off to the risk zone😂. At the beginning MC is very weak and seems unable to resist, but don't worry, he gives as good as he gets😏their relationship is like an endless cycle of kicking each other 🫶😂

I agree with translator that this novel very much about people, how good they are and how awful and evil they are, how only when people are working together can they hope for the brighter future.

There are so many likeable supporting characters, they all are different with their own stories and characters. They create many funny moments I laughed with all my heart🫶.

Readers, don't be afraid of the very very very long third arc, actions there happen in several cities, so it's like big arc with several arcs inside. I recommend you to try it, especially if you like very creepy stories, unlimited flow novels, op MC and ML and chinese history and culture! <<less

It's not bad for a horror unlimited flow bl, but the ML (?) sucks. I'd rather the MC somehow get strong enough to kill him. No really. From what he's shown so far, I don't see how this guy can ever deserve love from MC, so any ending where they get together is just going to make me sad, like a story where the ab*ser wins.

The arcs are full of interesting cultural references & I appreciate the MC & side characters a lot. Just hate the ML. At least the... more>> romance (?) is extremely slow, so I can just pretend it doesn't exist. <<less

This is eerily similar to Thriller Tour Group. However, The First Boss of Horror Tales has poorer storytelling.

1. Both TTG and TFBHT have silver-haired ruthless maniac MC's. They both even have 'Wei' in their name (different Chinese character, but still). They are both 'sickly, on the verge of death' and both are very strong. TTG's MC is a bit more playful and interesting in my opinion. TFBHT's MC was in a different unlimited flow world before and gets stuck in a new one. He's driven by revenge, mostly.

2. The 'instances'... more>> in TTG are based off history and legends, as well as ancient artifacts. TFBHT's 'instances' are specific areas in the real-world that are based on a legend (?)

3. Both stories have an 'audience' and 'live-stream' aspect

3. Side characters in TTG take a back seat with the MC in the spotlight but they all have their backstories and personalities. In TFBHT, the side characters feel like decoration or something. The don't really seem to contribute anything except the fact it'd be weird it they weren't there.

The storytelling is also kinda jumbled in First Boss of Horror Tales, as perspectives shift sometimes with little explanation. One moment they're at a Hall, the next moment they're at the House.... And the fighting action seems lackluster (elbow hit here, shove there...). It's extremely wordy sometimes with the descriptions for things that don't really feel important (TTG is also extremely wordy, but mostly filled with historical explanations that just go over my head).

Finally, besides the descriptions of pain and coughing up blood, the MC is super op here. No one asks or seems to question it even though MC is a 'newcomer, ' they just underestimate him until he does something and everyone is like "how can he do this?! Omg!!!" It gets bland after a while. <<less

The plot is good, I always love the plot twist in the end. Although since I'm not chinese, I don't understand some culture and taboos so I always have google on my next tab.

If you love enemies to lover troupe then this is for you. Mind you, a lot of non-consent touching here.
