Forced to Ascend the Throne after Transmigrating

After he transmigrated, Ye Shuo became the Ninth Prince of the Great Zhou Dynasty.

His mother was the most favoured Imperial Concubine, and his grandfather was the Duke Zhen who had massive troops under him; his birth immediately made him one of the three most popular candidates in fighting for the throne, even overshadowing the Crown Prince.

The most important thing was, even his mother shared the same desires in competing for the throne.

A favoured concubine + Military power + an Emperor in the prime of his life; at first glance, this kind of arrangement already meant its upcoming doom was near. Not only that, he still had eight more elder brothers above him filled with ambitions.

Eight older brothers, and each one of them outstanding on their own.

Ye Shuo thought about it for a while, then closed his eyes and kicked his feet; whoever wanted to ascend this throne should just do it.

So what if they became the Emperor? There wasn’t any Internet, not even electricity, as well as any games; even if he became the Emperor, the toilets still couldn’t flush on its own.

As he had no desires to fight for it, just like that, the royal Ninth Prince who was treasured like gold and jade grew up to be an infamous dandy.

They had to go to the study room before dawn? So that’s why the probability of children dying young was high; he definitely won’t go.

Being a subject first then only a person? Even if he is the Emperor, wasn’t he still his father?

At first, the Crown Prince and everyone else thought that this brother of theirs was just keeping a low profile while biding his time, only till that time when he was eight years old and still continued being carried on his father’s back to class did they finally realized, that child was done for.

In the past, the current Emperor was always threading over thin ice, carefully maintaining his position as a son for thirty years before he finally ascended the throne. After taking the throne, his sons now were just like the previous him during those years before; until the birth of the Ninth Prince, that was the first time the Emperor met a child like him.

But for some reason that even he didn’t know of, the Emperor was instead very invested in his young son; even if there were more children born after, he was still less attentive towards them than him.

More than ten years went by, conflicts started to arouse in court, feuds amongst brothers appeared, times were changing; and yet only Ye Shuo continued to remain the same.

Nobody could expect that, the new Emperor would pass away three years after he took the throne, only leaving behind his one and only child as heir. With painstaking efforts and great difficulty, Ye Shuo finally supported his brother’s only child to the throne; however, he only took away his attention for a moment and just like that, the child was gone.

The imperial clan didn’t have anyone left; and could only let this Imperial Uncle of him to inherit the throne.

During his time as the Emperor’s uncle, he was only twenty six years old.

Ye Shuo: “…”

The day of his enthronement, when they thought back of how the previous Ninth Prince and the current Ninth Imperial Uncle hadn’t even graduated from primary school; the ministers couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed with grief, and almost made the Hall of Supreme Harmony overflown with tears.

Their Great Zhou Dynasty, was going to end.

Seeing how the Ninth Prince after becoming the Emperor continued with his out of sorts behaviour, everyone including the Imperial Tutor had already made preparations to be annexed by the two countries around them.

What they didn’t expect was after a year, the country was still stable.

Three years went by, the common people no longer suffered from any hunger.

After five years, natural disasters started to appear, Ye Shuo took the oppurtunity to send out troops, and then annihilated the two countries.

Looking at this unified territory before them, the courtiers couldn’t believe their eyes.

Who would’ve thought that in Ye Shuo’s previous life, he was actually a genius.

Hello, I'm the translator for this series :D

As a loyal NU reader for years, I've read my fair share of CN novels. But as a translator, I'm gonna try and give an my review of this story to tell why I chose this story to translate.

So extra info: this book is quite long, 300+ chapters and the main character starts from a baby and grows till his adulthood. If you ask me, the book is split into three main parts, the first being MC's time as a child, and then... more>> it'll be his time as a newly crowned prince (18 years old) and lastly would be his time as the Emperor.

But I'll still put a spoiler tag in care some of y'all don't wanna read it and jump straight to the reading.

Spoiler

This book is mainly more about how a modern person, filled with modernised thinking and knowledge of the 21st century transmigrates into someone from ancient times.

However, his identity is someone of the imperial family, and we all know how it is to grow up in the imperial harem. Even we know how bad the fights are from our shows, and that is exactly what our MC knows too. But our MC was blessed with a fortunate life during his first life and as someone who had experienced death before and is now given this chance of a second life, it feels like his rebirth. So why not, he could enjoy it his new life happily by avoiding the most obvious pit, fighting to be the next Emperor.

Having a modernised thinking greatly helps too; he's like a breath of fresh air in the harem, and slowly influencing each corner of the palace. He makes different types of relationships with each member of his new family, including his parents, brothers and also the people living inside the harem. Feels like a dream, isn't it? When he didn't turned out to be an obvious threat to his brothers or others by desiring the throne, you'll find out how amiable other people are.

However, as time started to go by, it wasn't just our MC that had gotten older. Even the emperor couldn't avoid time. The real motive why each one of them started to fight amongst each other, for the throne. While our MC had left the fight early on, he was still very close with some brothers. And they were all from the Imperial Clan, to get something meant you had to bet something of your own, for the throne, they were betting it all. No one could just leave the fight, each one of them had people to fight for; their mothers, wives and even their children. Trying to carelessly leave meant putting them in danger and none of them wanted to risk it. The fight has finally begun.

Through our MC's eyes, this whole fight was vicious but even he couldn't do anything to stop it. Everyone had their own path of life to walk on as they were the ones who chose it. His neutral position had protected him but as he watched the people he loved dying one after another, not even he could remain the same after this.

When he became the Emperor, he had more responsibilities to think about. His life, his family's, and now even his citizens. It was true that his influence has changed some people, but even he wasn't immune from getting influenced by their times in ancient china. His modern knowledge had made sure he knew of the consequences of being light hearted during these times. To protect his loved ones, perhaps he made some cruel decisions, but if he didn't, it would result in them getting eaten. In this dog eat dog world, no one was truly safe.

[collapse]

IMO, I wouldn't say this story is full of those scheming plans or strategies. Its sorta slice of life in the beginning? The calm before the storm to be more precise. Its more about how the MC starts to develop in character, during his time as a Prince then a crowned King before turning into the Emperor. And not only him, everyone that has crossed paths with him have also changed, whether it be good or bad, just like a butterfly changing time's course. Everyones walking their own way of life.

Spoiler

Secretly, the best part about the story in the interactions between him and his Father Emperor (if it was in modern times, his father would really need to take blood pressure pills everyday), him and his mom too (yes she does change, and she's really cute) and then with his other sibings (God I really do love each and every one of them) and also with the court ministers.

I absolutely loved this. I spent half the novel crying of laughter, and the other half crying of heartbreak.

Rather long, it follows the Ninth Prince on his unwilling journey to the throne. Although this story was kind of unrealistic, transmigration is an unrealistic thing in the first place. I think the overall story is good and the execution was great. I really liked the MC, there was a great balance between his kindness and modern sensibilities and the ruthlessness that he was called to. I got attached to a lot... more>> of the other characters too. A lot of the plotlines had great build up and foreshadowing. I could really feel Ye Shuo's unwillingness and the inevitability of these power-hungry brothers tearing this family apart. Somehow, this younger brother remained liked by all of them.

From the halcyon dream of childhood, to the successive tragedies of the second part, and finally the endeavors and stability of the third part, I really liked this story. If you want something a little more unique and well written you should give it a try. <<less

I... This is well written okay, like the MC even though he's very Mary Sue is very likeable as well, he's not annoying and I got swept up by his free spirit as well

As for why I rated this so low, I could just be biased but

Spoiler

I can't get over the character deaths, all of them are so tragic, the author is really cruel, they made sure to write about each and every character their good points their bad points, their motivations and so you get attached to them and when they do die it's just so sad

The Crown Prince is the first death as he commits su*cide as he didn't get support from the subjects as the next crown prince and the other contenders manipulated as such that he thought that his father also disapproved of him when it was not the case at all and his father wanted him and only him to get the throne, he doesn't even get to know that when he dies

The fourth prince didnt have much of a part but the moment he dies is when he decides to do an act of kindness and gets betrayed, he was a sweet guy

The sixth prince worked so so hard being cautious and diligent at the cost of his own health that even though he become the emperor he had been crowned only 2 years and had grown dependant on drugs because of his bad health after he dies, the consensus was that he was a cruel king when even though we as readers can see how hard he worked for everything

The emperor is a man of his times, feudalistic but it's so clear how much he loves the MC and and the crown prince as well, as emperor we can also see that he is cruel to his other sons as he only wished for the Crown Prince to get the throne and no one else

Sixth Prince's son Ye Jin was such a sweet little boy, weak in health always trying to be a good emperor following his father diligence even though he was only 10, sat on the throne for such a short time and died of the plague, he requested not to be buried even though he was a emperor only because he wanted to set and example that person's afflicted by the plague need to be burned 😭😭😭😭

Crown Prince's son Ye Xun was my last straw really, he's a character we see since he was three years old following ye shuo the MC, we see him grow up basically and he was the MC's most favourite nephew as well, we see when him when his father died and he was demoted and we see him when he plans treason to kill the MC

I know I should be less biased and not let character deaths affect my rating but I am only human

[collapse]

My heart feels very heavy right now and I am choked up with tears, I really should have read a brainless novel but instead came here and look at the consequences <<less

I sobbed in many scenarios and laughed in many scenarios. The fight between royal family is beautifully written. MC lived the life without regrets other princes wouldn't have done the same. Ye Jin is truly very sincere for MC even in underworld but at last I feel truly sorry for the emperor Jingwen, initially he may have not want MC to live but under influence of MC he gradually loved him most and missed him most that even in next life he couldn't let his memory let go. This is really a nice story. I specially liked mc's childhood very much. From the beginning I was attracted to this novel. From the moment he was bron, his interactions with his father, brothers, his hilarious actions, his caring nature his desperate attempts to make thinks right, his pain all these makes this novel special for me.

Even knowing that in royal family fighting for throne is a cruel truth he still tried his best to care for his brothers and there children.

There are some flaws in the story writing but... more>> still this novel moved me. I felt that I shared mc's growth, his childhood, his journey. Even this is not the best novel I loved it. Theses are my personal feelings. Everyone has different tastes on novel can suite everyone but please give this a try

I like novels of different genre like Fl, Bl, thriller, fantasy, time travel, sci-fi, supernatural, cultivation, mary sue, mistry, entertainment industry etc. Even reading so many stories this novel hits differently. Please give it a try <<less

Beautiful beginning. The interactions between the family are the best part of the story. The ending was kind of tragic but acceptable enough since the MC gets his way. Still worth it just because of the way the relationships are written. I think this author has the talent to write comedy. It started to get a bit more dull when the serious bit of unification came in. The extras are all the dead relatives watching from the afterlife, and it was very funny. There is also a modern life extra.... more>> The bonus chapter was disappointing because it was so short, but the idea was hilarious. Everyone by the MC gets reborn. It was disappointing mainly because I went to the trouble of downloading the app and ImageGoogle translating the screens to be able to access it, and it was so short!!! ;_;

But still, happy to know this book exists in life. <<less

I liked this story from the beginning to the end. Specially our MC (ye shuo) his interaction with others is really interesting. I liked how he understood women's pain at that era and how he understood a man by observing his behaviour with his wife. Our MC was a lazy person maybe because he was a genius but he still made preparation for everything behind everyone's back. It was funny to me how everyone thought he was innocent specifically how he tricked his wife with his beauty and innocence.

What I... more>> loved most about our MC was how sensitive he was towards emotions of his loved one's for example, because he loved all his nephews when one of his nephew was jealous towards his other cousin he didn't ignore it but gave serious explanation to him.

[I am also very sensitive person, in my childhood I was also very jealous because of a matter/something like that so I can understand.]

_________

Can anyone tell where I can find extras I can't read official translation because it is locked and need coins (actually also because I don't have any money and don't know how to unlock it 😞 😣). I read this novel in raw by Google translating but they only provide main story.

Thank you for extra's link❤️. I have read it. <<less

Probably one of the best novels I've read in a long time. The author manages to hit a nice balance of comedy and tragedy, while keeping you on your toes. The summary says a lot but who survives to old age and who dies young was quite surprising in some places. The extras were cheesy but I actually liked them, it was nice to have some characters brought back for some additional sweetness.

Ye Shuo/Xiao Ju/ Ninth Prince is a type of main character that is overpowered. Despite that, his plot was built extremely well that made him lovable and charming. He is also a feminist that raise female status on Great Zhao Dynasty, raise female official and pointing daughter as heir. He even began to schemes, because of he was preparing for Jianjian, his sister's future.

With the joyfulness and laughter at the beginning of the story, it also brings the heartbreak and sorrow in the middle of the story when the princes... more>> grow up and start fighting for the throne.

Emperor Jingwen is a good Emperor but a ruthless father. His oversight, biasness and lack of communication that brings schemes upon schemes among the princes. Do not to be attached with other character, especially the princes and it's spawn, because some of them will brings overwhelming sadness to reader.

Most of the female characters on this story is also lovable and charming, especially Concubine Rong, Yao Zhi and Jianjian.

I loved this thing. The man is such a feminist king honestly...

The relationship between him and his father and him and his brothers were the best part, so complex yet loving as well as his evolution through the years and his funny mindset. This novel is just a gem, loved it.

Amazing, Funny and Heartwarming beginning. Childhood Arc was definitely the best arc.

Still great but Melodramatic and Tragic middle succession arc.

Last arc was boring by comparison. Too simplistic and straightforward compared to other kingdom builders.

I love this novel so so much. The male lead is domineering and fun to read about. He is loyal, but not s*upid. Ruthless, but not unkind.

Relationships between each characters are the highlights of this novel. It is intriguing until the end.

The romance is also very very good and fun to read. The female lead is not s*upid, and a strong person, suitable for the male lead. The male lead is also not dumb and relies on his wife a lot, he is also not sexist, which is a plus.

A story of a genius salted fish wannabe man who tried his best not to be in power but still had to. He loved freedom and was naughty but never put a step beyond the boundary.

This novel has a focus on father's love and when Emperor Jingwen died, I was seriously bawling. Their relationship wasn't perfect but still the impact was big.

I don't really like reading stories that continue until they died of old age or too many character death and this novel has both... But what can I do...... more>> This novel is just that good.

I LOVE this novel but the translation is not so good, the MTL vibe was obvious... I appreciate the effort but there are just a bit too much typos on his her she him. It's an entertaining read at first. MC's antics when he was a kid was kinda slapstick funny, but I only got really invested in the story when MC grew up and the battle for the throne intensified. It was really interesting to see how each imperial member fell and how the story showed the psychology of each character.

In a world (the imperial palace) where you have no hope for humanity, MC is the one shining character that makes you think "there's hope for humanity after all".

Thank you to Shanghai Fantasy,... more>> but this is a story I would have loved to read with better translation. Deducted a star for that. <<less

This is the first and probably the last time I would want to write a review. I just have to say that this novel is one of the most heartfelt stories I've ever pleasurably read. The sincerity in which the author can convey emotions with relatively a simple writing style cannot be commended enough. I can literally feel the reading slump coming. It was just THAT good!

Ye Shuo is reincarnated in the royal family of Great Zhou. Just after opening his eyes he's faced with mortal peril. Despite his genius and OP abilities, he tries to build a peaceful life for his mother and him. While he avoids the bloody fight for the throne, he is left with no other choice at the end.

I'm not gonna spoil much as the novel has much of a slice of life flavor to it with some political... more>> and palace intrigue here and there. However, I'd have to say the emotional scenes were written beautifully! I laughed at the hilarious antics of our Ninth Prince, felt warm at the wholesome bond in the imperial family, even cried multiple times at the helpless gut-wrenching situations the characters eventually had to face.

I loved Ye Shuo, the main lead. Love. Love. Loveeee~

Absolutely loved the Imperial Concubine, the crown prince, the sixth prince, Ye Xun, Ye Jin, Wei Wan, the Grand Tutor, Old Duke Zhen, the eldest prince, Ye Yan and his brothers, the seventh prince, Zhao Chongrong and her neighboring concubines. Though Emperor Jingwen was an as*hole at first, I couldn't help but feel for him. Especially his ending in the last extra was bittersweet.

I'd have to say though, the romance started pretty late and kind of got overshadowed to the point it seemed like a subplot after completing the novel. The female lead, Yao Zhi, didn't have as many character development or complexities as many other side characters so she also kinda got overshadowed. Despite that, the romantic plot is still adorable and hilarious tbh.

When I read the synopsis for the first time, I knew I'd like this novel. Indeed I was wrong, cause I LOVED it!!!! Though the translation quality went downhill after a few chapters, it was readable enough that it didn't truly bother me. Great novel! Would absolutely recommend!!! <<less

This novel is absolutely amazing. Even though the premise is a bit cliche, the plot is really enjoyable. At the beginning of the story, it felt like I was reading a light and funny slice of life story. As the story progresses, the plot of the novel becomes heavier. I feel like, even though I already knew that the family would die one by one, I was still sad when it happened.

The MC's character is really realistic with unrealistic abilities. In the story we are told many times how cowardly... more>> the MC is. This applies to all the characters, none of them are perfect. However, this is what makes their characters even deeper.

Even though this is not a perfect story, this novel really managed to make my feelings mixed up. <<less

I enjoyed this from the beginning until the end. The whole lifestory of our MC who was reborn up-until his afterlife. I never get bored at all. Even the extra chapters at the end gives a very wholesome closure! Very satisfying and enjoyable!

"Masterpiece? ", "Average? ", "Good?" or "Bad?" Nope. The most apt description for this novel is simply "Beautiful!", it's a novel with very wholesome family interactions with a criminally funny protagonist and from the beginning the drama is part is mostly filled with positive emotions rather than painful... more>> ones. This novel is Hilarious, Warm & Relaxing and most of all beautiful Drama, unlike other dramas that only makes you feel pain, the drama here feels lighthearted and warm but even those drama will go back into being comedy story full of fun.

MC's personality is one of the best i've read. MC is very optimistic, MC is also very manipulative but not in an evil way, he is very perceptive and have a high EQ, he can read people and he use his acting skills to get what he wants.

PS: This story is like a premium version of "I Became the Legendary Emperor Throughout the Ages After I Started Giving Away My Territory", very different in quality but overall has the same mood and theme.

Edit: Drama was only lighthearted from the 1-100+ chapters but will slowy become very heavy in the middle but never become annoying and the lightheartedness didn't disappear. After some heavy drama the comedy always comes back with all that feels good and wholesome plotlines. If you want to read a novel filled with Schemes and Manipulations and very smart characters then read this. The comedy is a lovely bonus. Definitely worth it! <<less

Pretty decent novel, a lot of details are glossed over but the most enjoyable part was the character growth of the Emperor father, and then afterwards how the scenario developed when Little Nine became the Emperor and advocated/planned for womens rights and their role in society. Overall an enjoyable read with not many complications or twists.
