After he transmigrated, Ye Shuo became the Ninth Prince of the Great Zhou Dynasty.

His mother was the most favoured Imperial Concubine, and his grandfather was the Duke Zhen who had massive troops under him; his birth immediately made him one of the three most popular candidates in fighting for the throne, even overshadowing the Crown Prince.

The most important thing was, even his mother shared the same desires in competing for the throne.

A favoured concubine + Military power + an Emperor in the prime of his life; at first glance, this kind of arrangement already meant its upcoming doom was near. Not only that, he still had eight more elder brothers above him filled with ambitions.

Eight older brothers, and each one of them outstanding on their own.

Ye Shuo thought about it for a while, then closed his eyes and kicked his feet; whoever wanted to ascend this throne should just do it.

So what if they became the Emperor? There wasn’t any Internet, not even electricity, as well as any games; even if he became the Emperor, the toilets still couldn’t flush on its own.

As he had no desires to fight for it, just like that, the royal Ninth Prince who was treasured like gold and jade grew up to be an infamous dandy.

They had to go to the study room before dawn? So that’s why the probability of children dying young was high; he definitely won’t go.

Being a subject first then only a person? Even if he is the Emperor, wasn’t he still his father?

At first, the Crown Prince and everyone else thought that this brother of theirs was just keeping a low profile while biding his time, only till that time when he was eight years old and still continued being carried on his father’s back to class did they finally realized, that child was done for.

In the past, the current Emperor was always threading over thin ice, carefully maintaining his position as a son for thirty years before he finally ascended the throne. After taking the throne, his sons now were just like the previous him during those years before; until the birth of the Ninth Prince, that was the first time the Emperor met a child like him.

But for some reason that even he didn’t know of, the Emperor was instead very invested in his young son; even if there were more children born after, he was still less attentive towards them than him.

More than ten years went by, conflicts started to arouse in court, feuds amongst brothers appeared, times were changing; and yet only Ye Shuo continued to remain the same.

Nobody could expect that, the new Emperor would pass away three years after he took the throne, only leaving behind his one and only child as heir. With painstaking efforts and great difficulty, Ye Shuo finally supported his brother’s only child to the throne; however, he only took away his attention for a moment and just like that, the child was gone.

The imperial clan didn’t have anyone left; and could only let this Imperial Uncle of him to inherit the throne.

During his time as the Emperor’s uncle, he was only twenty six years old.

Ye Shuo: “…”

The day of his enthronement, when they thought back of how the previous Ninth Prince and the current Ninth Imperial Uncle hadn’t even graduated from primary school; the ministers couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed with grief, and almost made the Hall of Supreme Harmony overflown with tears.

Their Great Zhou Dynasty, was going to end.

Seeing how the Ninth Prince after becoming the Emperor continued with his out of sorts behaviour, everyone including the Imperial Tutor had already made preparations to be annexed by the two countries around them.

What they didn’t expect was after a year, the country was still stable.

Three years went by, the common people no longer suffered from any hunger.

After five years, natural disasters started to appear, Ye Shuo took the oppurtunity to send out troops, and then annihilated the two countries.

Looking at this unified territory before them, the courtiers couldn’t believe their eyes.

Who would’ve thought that in Ye Shuo’s previous life, he was actually a genius.

A novel that perfectly balances humor and pathos, leaving the reader gasping for air from both laughing too hard and crying uncontrollably. There is no fade to black scenes where important characters just die... no, what we get is a depth to the grief, a tragedy that spans multiple chapters and many characters, showing the complexity of human nature where no one is neither completely black nor white. That ability to explore and show those gray areas is what makes this an immersive read. I felt as if I knew... more>> these people and that's why it'll take me a few days to shed the overwhelming grief. Be prepared to laugh and cry at the antics of our mischievous protagonist. <<less

Story is unique and fun, especially with the MC's antics as a child.

Con - MC is a bit OP. Photographic memory and learning martial arts just by watching someone.

Translation is also machine translated, and I would usually give up if that is the case, but the characters and their relationship are very interesting that I just endured it.

Despite the cons, it's a really fun read.

Honestly this story when he's growing up is fun. I disliked fights for succession, like a bunch of characters we see as cute kids end up killing each other. It was hard to read. Summary of story tells you its going to happen, but even though I tried to keep myself ready for it, I really grew to love those characters, especially 6th prince's son.

Unification stuff was boring in comparison.

It's okay. If I had read this earlier, I would most likely rate it higher but I had read something almost similar which makes me compare it even if I don't want to.

Well, based on the synopsis, you get the gist of the story. The only concern is how did he manage to become the emperor. Reading the summary, you will definitely know that there will be a lot of killings. It's just a matter of how and who will survive.

The MC really tried his best not to be the emperor. What breaks his heart break the most is the killing for inheretance. All of his brothers even nephew really wants to have power. The most heartbreaking for me is when he learned his nephew, YeJin died under the hands of his other nephew, Ye Xun whom he loved the most. The nephew whom he accompanied throughout childhood actually wanted to kill him also.

Nobody believed the MCs true resistance to become the emperor and as the story progress, they will realize that the only one who truly treated them without malice or agenda, is him. He was their son, brother, nephew and student. He didn't want to become the emperor.

[collapse]

The beginning of the story is okay. After I learned who the characters are, I skipped chapters already. There is some frustration around the ending. I feel like it's not well elaborated. The story focuses more on the nobles rather than commoners. There is no system. The MC is just really smart. <<less

3.5 rounded up bc it was funny and made me laugh. Otherwise, I think this book is actually a little disappointing. First of all doesn't help that the translation is 100% MTL but it's edited with some notes. Not very well edited but a bit especially in the beginning. Second, I really hate that the book description is basically a spoiler of the entire outline of this book.

I think it also makes you realize the level of plot armor and how everyone is just existing so eventually the main character... more>> can take over. That's the part that I dislike. I hate that that was the book description. And therefore everyone just feels like a chess piece that's supposed to move out of the way or die in order for the main character to become king. And at first I didn't really feel that way when I was reading it because I thought that it was going to show more and that The way that the main character made the princes get along was supposed to like foreshadow a sense of peace or like them changing their minds or something. But it doesn't. I think I'm at this point of the novel where I'm realizing that yes it adds depth to the complexity of characters that they used to get along or they had moments of getting along but overall the power for the throne blinds them or whatever... But it just makes it feel pointless. It gets more to the point where I just feel like everything was used as a device for the novel, which is fair but I don't like seeing it so outrightly, In order for you to think of the past and be sad about what's happening in the present. And I think that's why the author wrote what they did. But that makes everything meaningless to me. And just makes me think everyone is supposed to be a chess piece to either provide emotional response from the readers to being sad at what is happening or a way for the main character to rise up by everyone clashing with each other. So even though that is typical and of course that's how novels are written, the best novels are written so you do not feel the pull of the plot. You do not feel like the author is guiding you. You just feel like the characters exist and are naturally working through their own characterization and therefore the plot leads that way. That doesn't feel that way. In my opinion.

Of course what I'm talking about is a very high level of writing. Which I'm not sure this translation can even truly describe well even if the original novel might have been able to achieve that. So that might be a mtl transition issue. Or else I think it's probably that my expectations are too high and I don't really think this writing is that like high level. Regardless it is a good novel. I think it's very funny and normally you know if you see the plot ending up like this and you know the plot is supposed to move because of this then you're just like you know what that's a basic book that works and it is good and is well written. So it is a good book. It's just for me easy to see through and therefore I don't really care. It makes me feel like you are trying to make me feel emotional by doing these things and not necessarily not really making me feel emotional because the story is naturally moving that way. I don't know if you understand my difference here but yeah I think it's because the book starts like it could be such high level writing that I have that expectation. Or maybe I just have higher expectations and standards regardless which lol is probably true. But yeah I think it's there's a level that this book could have had that potential to be really amazing. But I just think some characters were written OOC in my opinion in order for the main character to become king that's just my opinion. Otherwise, If they were going to write moments where the main character got the princes to get along or exist in childhood, they should write more in detail on the conflicts and the secret ways that they were plotting each other instead of just hinting at it. Yes it was overtly hinted at and written that they're fighting secretly or they dislike each other for this reason and that is good enough. But that doesn't feel good enough I feel like for what happens later and how ruthless they are with each other which we had no idea about other than that the undertones of it but then it's overtly shown in the writing when you know things go to shit.... It makes it feel like unnatural. But that's because the setup was not entirely there. The setup needed to be more detailed not to say it didn't exist. In that way the writing could have been better. Otherwise it does feel like wow this is something we were hinted at but it does feel suddenly a little out of character just because we never saw the details of them fighting or them explicitly working against each other or being explicitly ruthless. I don't know I'm just rambling now. But this is my opinion and I think the book is getting heavier now just so the main character can rise up and become the emperor eventually but it's annoying that you basically saw the outline of this book from the description like I'm genuinely annoyed that I read the book description. And it just feels very obvious now and I hate it. But I do think this book is good I just I don't think I'm in the mood to finish it right now I don't know if I'll ever will. There's something about it that pisses me off like it could have been so good <<less

There are the bones of a good story here, but the execution is only okay. Combine that with a really bad translation that is so unreadable I'm surprised I even read 236 chapters of this, I wouldn't really recommend this. Not the fault of the story, but something to consider for the english readers. This has the same problem that uplift novels often have in that it ignores a lot of the gritty work that it takes to create technological, economic, and social change. Things come too easily to the... more>> protagonist in that regard. He's also a massive Gary Stu who is basically flawless in every way. That's not to say he isn't an enjoyable character though, he has a fairly charming personality. Another problem this novel has is that it spends a LOT of time on the protagonist during his infant to preteen years, which leads to a lot of absurd conversations for a toddler to be having, and makes the story feel very slow during a period of life where the MC has very little agency.

There are some excellent side characters in this story. The emperor (MC's father), and the crown prince are both excellent characters who are written in a very tragic way. The Emperess and her son are also very good in this regard. With that said, despite having all of these excellent side characters who are destined for tragedy, it feels like the story deals with them too haphazardly. I wish the story spent more time on their inevitable tragic ends, showing what leads up to that point. In general, it feels like the author wrote a really good outline for a story but ultimately failed to execute on it.

To be honest, if this story had even a passable translation I probably would've finished it. But the translation is so bad that, when considering the many flaws this story has, its hard to justify continuing reading it. <<less

Ye Shuo’s antics are hilarious af. Love love love. The interactions between MC and his dad are gold. The novel is very satisfying upto when he became emperor (title already spoiled it) which occurs towards the end. Then, it loses some of its charm. That’s why it didn’t make it into all time favourite. The underworld projection extras are funny, but I didn’t like the 2-3 chapters about modern world. But overall it’s great. Just ignore those parts. Would still recommend.

Personal rating 4.3, it's fun but if we can't call it romance oriented injosei or shojou, it's romance in shonen/seinen story (fast and quickly satisfied u). I ever read something in similar setting, I feel this one better especially when MC is child and the extras, although the feminist part it's a bit too much for me somehow, it's not the content is too much but how Author make many special character and development but it's ok.. I really like how their brotherhood and the twist of it when they... more>> scheme each other. <<less

3.5 stars purely for the MC.

MC is a hilarious character. I can't believe I was so invested in the antics of an adult, even in a baby's body. MC lived recklessly like the only enlightened person who knew the world was ending. If he didn't have loving family that grounded him, MC would have gone insane.

Once again, a novel highlighted that monarchs are the most hypocritical existences. The Emperor had so many children, allowed them to have official positions, then expected them to accept the status quo despite their strengths.... more>>

He is the one who created the tragedy of the crown prince and the meaningless death of the 4th prince. I cried so hard, I mourned with the MC as if crying for a real person.

[collapse]

The tone of the story became so depressing after battle for throne started. It snowballed into such a tragedy. Stubborn greedy people fighting for an elusive throne. It deeply hurt when MC's sincerity was finally trampled for the throne.

I was rooting for MC to be able to escape the royal struggles. It was admirable that he chose to be responsible, even when the position was forced upon him. <<less
