I suspect that I’m crazy.

Crazy. Insane. Mad. However you want to put it. And I mean the type where there’s really something wrong with me, something uncontrollable and life-ruining and in my brain, in my blood, and not just that I’m a little weird or have an overdramatic, rash personality. I suspect I have schizophrenia, OCD, depression and other mental illnesses.

But there’s a gangster stutterbug that won’t even take mercy on a crazy person, oh my god. Where are his morals?

–—-

Ever since I first met Xue Yaozu at the karaoke parlour where I work part-time, I started seeing him all the time. This self-proclaimed ‘old classmate’ definitely has some hidden, nefarious motive up his sleeves!

Why else would he ask about my job, where I live, and even if he can help me??? Not to mention the fact that he keeps trying to assure me that he’s not a bad guy! Sus! So sus!!!! Red alarms blaring type of sus!!

Aaak.. my head... what is real and what is fake...

My brain is try to make sense of all this but I do have hard time follow it sometimes.

This story is interesting. You can't predict where this story is going but I do feel that MC get "heal" bit by bit when story progress.

What a ride, I do really love the extra because it clear thing up ❤

As someone who has difficulty dealing with my mental health, some of the stuff in this novel hit too close to home. One minute I'm laughing at the ridiculousness of Ren Yigu's jumps in logic, and in another there's a thought process that Ren Yigu has that I've had before, and all of a sudden I'm somber and thinking about my own past experiences. I think the translator says it best, it's a comedy filled with glass shards.

As for Ren Yigu... how can I say this, his character is complicated.... more>> You can see that he has quite a few problems, from paranoia, OCD, and possibly schizophrenia. Reading from his point of view is like riding a rollercoaster. The way he goes from positively thinking about himself to the sudden downward spiral, even to the point of hinting at thinking about su*cide, is very realistic. Even the slightest disparaging comment can turn his world view around.

Xue Yaozu's (ml) story unfurled wonderfully. At first, like Ren Yigu, I also had no clue why on earth he liked him. It seemed so out of the blue. But as the story went on, I realized why and the extent of his feelings. Especially after reading the extras, which are from Xue Yaozu's POV, I can see how lovable Ren Yigu really is, which I couldn't see from the main storyline because Ren Yigu is quite an unreliable narrator (which you'll understand very well in the first chapter).

The only thing I wish I could change about this novel is to make it longer. This feels like a teaser of sorts, and I want to see more of Ren Yigu's journey, not only with his mental health but also his family circumstances, which I felt were never truly wrapped up. Now that I've got a taste of a different perspective, I want to go all out and see the perspective from his older brother, younger siblings, and grandpa. How do they view him, and what truly happened in those events that he described? I'm a bit sad that these questions weren't answered, but I still love this novel and all the emotions and introspections it gave me. <<less

A bit disappointed. It seems that I couldn't really been charmed by this story? I have no issue reading about mental illnesses, depressions etc. Maybe because I'm quite familiar with people close to me that suffer from this, that I'm a bit immune?? Not that I don't understand, but rather that I understand it too well and get used to 'deal' with it. I symphatize, but won't suffer from it kind of feeling. Anyway, I didn't get emotional at all whilst reading this story.

I just thought ML was really sweet, stuttering and so unconditionally loving MC. That warmed my heart. Besides that, this story felt very ordinary and bland to me. Maybe it is the writing style that was quite devoid of emotional scenes or fluff/drama. You read about MC's paranoia and mental illnesses, but not truly his other emotions.
Spoiler

like when MC broke up with ML. It felt as if MC didn't feel anything, no sadness etc. I missed reading about MC's other emotions and feelings besides his paranoia thoughts.

[collapse]

Also, did I totally overlook a paragraph or sentence explaining why MC suffers from mental illness as that was not the case when he was in high school (?). Story feels incomplete.

Great short story. Writing style/translation is good, and story is interesting and PAINFUL. I skipped the tags and expected comedy, instead I got fresh tears. Only reason I'm not giving a perfect score is because it felt like there could be more. The ending was a little short and so were the extras. But still pretty good nonetheless

A really entertaining read. Ren Yigu is a very unreliable narrator, but his thoughts are so interesting and funny. I love it. It's just the perfect length, too.

Even the serious parts fit really well. When it's not funny, and Ren Yigu recollects some memories from his past and things about his family situation which were painful to read, it made tears run down my face and it made my heart ache. The scenes with Xue Yaozu are very nice and very sweet, and even with Ren Yigu's unreliableness, I could... more>> still feel that Xue Yaozu reallly cared about Ren Yigu. <<less

Nice how it's about the mental illness of our MC. It's also slightly comedy-ish so I originally thought MC was just paranoid or something, but he does have a mental illness. I love ML's love for MC and his support!! We don't see that enough sighh. I like it <33

i cried my eyes out until I don’t even know what colour is black and what colour is blue. My roommate ended up asking me if I have seafood allergy, because my eyes swollen up real bad :)

there is this saying that goes 还子债父 which basically means the debt of a father is paid by his son. You can apply that in this case, except change the father to mother.

it is heartbreaking to read the thoughts of Ren Yigu, especially when he emphasised the fact that he is aware... more>> that he’s sick somewhere in his head (to the point of mentioning schizophrenia)
Spoiler

my first cry while reading was when he cried alone after having a day out with his friend and avoiding contact or mentions about Xue Yaozu because he thought Xue Yaozu was a hallucination that he made up in order to protect himself (think of something like a imaginary friend, a bodyguard) and from then on I cried at every chapter :)

[collapse]

this is a great read. Be aware that there are no trigger warnings in the actual novel though. T/W there are mentions of
Spoiler

su*cide by jumping off a building

[collapse]

Xue Yaozu stutters, and because of that he was bullied in school. Ren Yigu was very nice to him in high school and the rest you have to read it yourself. I cried a lot because Xue Yaozu is truly the endgame of male leads. So considerate, so caring (and a rich boss too) ; what more to ask?

5/5 totally 5/5. I love how this is one of very few novels that actually mentioned the importance of professional help instead of miraculously healing because of the power of love, or worse, singing :)

no i’m not throwing shade on any novel lol <<less

I dont even know what to freakin say.

By the second chapter I was already caught hook, line, and sinker by the main character. He makes me feel for him. So much. So freakin much. And not even in an angsty way. More like in a tender way. I can't abandon him. I need to see him find his happy ending. He really, really deserves it.

I really dont know how to express this. Like damn.

The story is good but a reader sensitive about mental illnesses will find it somewhat difficult. MC, Ren Yigu, has a mental illness and suffers from paranoia. He constantly thinks people are out to hurt him or scam his money. ML, Xue Yaozu, is an owner of a construction company. Although MC thinks he's a gangster, he isn't... he's just very good at fighting.

MC's monologuing sometimes made me sad and I couldn't fully enjoy the novel. However, the story has a quirky humorous vibe to it.

Spoiler

ML had a crush on MC since their years in school. MC had helped ML cross a bridge when he was scared and when he had to sing on stage at school. They also had an exchange event in which they went to each other's houses. ML witnessed MC being sad when his parents were fighting and ML held MC while he was crying in his sleep.

ML contributes his success in life to MC's encouragement when he was young. ML said he grew stronger and became successful to be able to protect MC.

[collapse]

There is a happy ending.

Spoiler

ML blackmailed MC into dating him again. MC had an inferiority complex and didn't think he was worthy of ML but ML said he'd kill himself. So MC agreed to go back with him. No worries, the scene wasn't full of blood and tears, it was a cutesy exchange between them that I'm sure will repeat itself many times throughout their years together. :)

It definitely could have been a bit longer to flesh out the side characters and ML more, but despite that it was a really good read given its length.

The MC has paranoia and OCD (and perhaps more disorders). He constantly thinks he is in danger even when the logical side of his brain tells him he's not. And it's in his POV for almost all the chapters. The ML is dedicated despite that and also convinces him to get counseling. I can't tell how much the ML is simplifying his... more>> words for the MC or if he really is so awkward he can't often say much more than "I like you, I'll protect you, " to the MC. Lmao that actually makes it more interesting.

I don't have extreme paranoia but I can kind of relate to the MC in some ways because I have obsessed over trivial things before despite knowing I am exaggerating the issue. There have been also been times I think my family might have died if they are gone longer than I expected. I imagine having that kind of mental disorder would make you think like that all the time, constantly, against your own will.

The MC's voice (writing style) is extremely humorous and witty, but it will hit you with spikes of sadness when you realize how bad some of the situations he's in are. Like when he interacts with his older brother.

Besides that, the story is pretty much 'slice of life', but with those mental disorders. The main resolution to the plot is the MC eventually going to counseling and getting medication, which helps him feel less close to the brink of pure insanity, although it doesn't magically solve any of his problems.

That's life tho, never any simple solutions to these problems.

To be honest, I liked the MC's perspective enough I probably could have read 20 more chapters of nothing much happening without getting bored. <<less

A quick read with more emphasis on comedy rather than romance. It kept me interested from start to finish and made me laugh out loud quite often. I loved it, and since it has a lot of re-read potential, I will definitely return to it every now and then.

This story is very nice. I enjoy reading it a lot.

It's a short read that you can definitely finished in a day. I remember crying when reading the story as it touched upon one of the most sensitive parts of my hearts about mental health. I really enjoy the comedic narrative inside a supposed to be depressing story. I also enjoy the ML who is very patient with the MC and slowly helped the MC to become better.

Yeah, it's a short enjoyable read that you definitely should try as there's... more>> only 15 chapter. <<less

It's heartwarming and saddening at the same time..

MC is paranoid, probably schizophrenic and also has OCD.. It can be be seen from the inconsistencies in the events he narrates.. And he himself is fully aware of that..

The thing I like the most about the story is that the ML actually convinces MC to go for counseling.. I've read stories that have characters with mental health issues.. But the most realistic way to cure them, i.e. To take them to a doctor is absent in most of the novels.. They just... more>> portray that love can cure any illness.. How absurd !!!

I even suspected that MC's friend here might have some motive for discouraging him from getting treatment, though I understand why he said that.. Since people often don't give much importance on mental health..

The story also clarified why ML fell in love with MC.. But for me, the story ended abruptly.. It wasn't shown clearly since when MC started to have paranoia.. The brother was also pretty harsh on handling MC.. It'd be better if there was also his brother's PoV included..

Anyway it's a good read.. <<less

I saw ppl saying the MC narrative was unreliable but after finishing both main and extra chapters, I don't see where his view unreliable? One view from present while the other view him from the past. Both views have different timeline, and MC also changed between the past and present into a different person. The only thing that didn't change is that he still blame himself for things happening in that shitty house. He's kinda cute despite how crazy he is though. So kudo to author and translators. And I... more>> has to disagree to those who wish to see MC big bro perspective because he's too much of a bit*h in my eyes. At least, MC thought of him as a good big bro. Poor MC has such a mother and father pair.

Spoiler

I was snapped when big bro just up and locked MC in his study room. I mean, you can say he want to help MC from giving his body to others just because of him who rejected MC but man, at least be more gentle or something like soften MC into listen to you. Don't f*cking reject his crazy illness bruh. You act more like a child than the sicko himself. =_= he got beaten up by ML at the end so lucky you man. You might have eat my wrath if not for ML helping you ^^

This story isn't anything special, but does have some interesting ideas and narration. I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it but It's short, so I think it's worth a read. I'll go more indepth in the spoiler.

Spoiler

My main issue with this story is so much wasted potential. The author comes up with interesting scenes but they are either quickly resolved or don't get explored. Having the readers question with parts of the MC life is real or not is brilliant, but is only used at the beginning and the MC quickly admits his lies. This made at first think "oh he tends to lie to himself, now I need to pay attention and question everything", but no after that everything the MC thinks of and who he interacts with are real. Even the outlandish plots that are obviously not real, that he comes up for himself are noted by him that it's because of his paranoia. Which is a shame. I used my big girl brain, for a story that didn't need her. When I saw the MC try to get his friend to avoid the ML, I got excited. I thought it was a hint of the ML not being real. But, when the MC himself questioned it, I immediately was disappointed. Now I knew he had to be real.

Then I thought ok, this can still work. Having the MC believe the ML is fake can still be really interesting, but no he quickly realizes he real, everything is real. So what is he so paranoid about! Most of his paranoid thoughts are fleeting and are quicky forgotten. I only have a very slight understanding of paranoia, since I had a bad reaction to some medicine. But, during my episodes, I would think about s*upid sh*t for hours. I remember I took out all the dishes and books and etc. Off shelves and cabinets because I convinced myself that a tornado was coming. That just on example but, The MC never had a full blown episode like that. He mainly stay normal except for sometimes talking out loud or being too in his head. The only actions I remember him doing because of his paranoia are him putting up cameras and having his siblings take his phone away. (Which actually triggered me a bit because I'm like "what if someone hacks your camera or what if you need to have your phone beside you incase of an emergency" 😂) Just disappointed that the MC didn't seemed that "crazy" to me.

I do however love how sometimes the MC thoughts are answered by the ML revealing that he sometimes think out loud. I imagine him biting his thumb nail while whispering to himself. Also there is a lack of ML's story. We get a little but, it's mainly centered around the MC.

This is heart break coated in sickeningly sweet sugar! Reading through its pages, you aren't sure whether you ought to be sobbing out loud or laughing??! Is this what you call dark humor?

This story has a sharp edge...a tad too sharp at times. However its truly one hell of a paradox. Its light but heavy, sad but funny, tormenting but fluffy... you name it, it is all there!

This book is definitely worth the read!

This novel was amazing. The MC didn't just magically get better after meeting the ML.
Spoiler

(From what I understood even at the end, the MC still wasn't fully recovered, and had problems)

[collapse]
. It was refreshing, seeing the MC live and grow, and how his friends and family reacted

The writing style was interesting in its own way. It was almost, if not exactly like a journal. You got to see alot of the MCs thoughts but not others people's thoughts, rather their actions.

The ML was also very refreshing. He wasn't the stereotypical, cold to everyone but the MC. He was straightforward, shameless, and caring. He respected the MCs boundaries and tried his best to help him. The ML also wasn't the typical macho, 6 pack, perfect love interest.

However, I did have some grievances with most of the book being in the MC's (Yan Riu) perspective. However, it helped tackle how he thought in a way that made sense.

Well done, but too short. Very alive and dynamic story. This kind of combination drama&humor is my favorite. Death, life and pain on the path between, but it is worth it. Some quotes will be epic like comics or fanart. I`m going to try and make some like posters and mugs for my friends. And I`m sure I`ll back to read this again.
