Very good novel. As of chapter 235, I would rate 4.5 stars.

The author is talented and the story manages to keep my attention and enthusiasm throughout which is very rare. I have read many regression/revenge/gamification/dungeon/xianxia/system/isekai/apocalyptic novels and few could keep me addicted all the way while many disappointed me and yanked me out of enjoyment with a certain flaw or another. Some are too slow paced that it becomes a chore to continue, some with too narrow focus to keep it interesting, some without enough world building, some with too... more>> a cruel MC to relate etc. But I dare say this novel succeeds in striking a passable balance in all that and even at chapter 235, I am as eager to continue as I was at the beginning. The portrayal of female MC's ruthlessness and righteousness was at the right balance for me to sympathize with her actions.

Another thing I notice is the author was able to explain many features of the gamification with decent reasoning. And I didn't notice big plot hole that could affect immersion. But I don't know why these type of female lead regression novels are obsessed with being part of a story book (such as the predestined main leads and supposed-to-be side character etc). It can affect suspension of disbelief and enjoyment if the final revelation is not handled carefully.

The power level of characters and MC's OPness is also well crafted so that it feels very balance while readers like me who prefer OP MC still find it satisfying. As of chapter 235, there is still no romance which is the way I prefer in such power fantasy genre. The author is also smart enough not to touch taboo areas too. I would recommend this to readers who want another regression/second chance/revenge novel with low key OP/mature MC. <<less

Rating: 4.8 (-0.2 for mostly minor translation issues, noted at the end of review)

The first thing to understand about the MC going into this story is that she's a killer, but she's not a bad person. Arguably, she's not a good person either, but she does have a bottom line for what she'll do or permit. She's morally flexible, but she was also shaped by being a beautiful and famous woman in a high-powered apocalyptic setting who was also betrayed or let down by everyone she ever believed... more>> in.

The MC does get petty revenge on all the people who wronged her in her past life, but the real focus of the story as time passes is her growing beyond what happened to her, and learning to connect with other people again. It's a slow process given how low her trust in people is, but it's also really refreshing. She does have moments where she feels sad and betrayed by the terrible people around her, but she doesn't linger on it. Instead, the story tone is relatively playful, especially as MC grows.

The writing style is very plain, and a lot of the characters' depths go implied rather than explicitly laid out, but coming to realize what the MC and other individuals are like for myself as I read is one of the strengths of this style. It's infinitely preferable to a story that lingers on how the moonlight kisses the beauty's white skin or whatever. It makes reading an extremely violent setting a lot more bearable by very rarely lingering on the gore. It also suits the MC's perspective as someone who is simply used to this level of violence and brutality, coming back from a time where pretenses of civility had been let go of almost completely in favor of survival.

There is some nationalism, but it's a very normal amount coming directly from the MC most of the time. Other countries aren't bad, she just wants her country to be strong; in part because that allows her to live more comfortably, and in part because she genuinely has some national pride. So far there haven't been any strawman caricatures of other cultures or races. The focus - and MC's priority- is her homeland. She does go to Hong Kong to get involved in the criminal underworld there, but once she has an in for the mainland underground she mostly stops. I'm also not sure if that could even be taken as offensive- I don't know what offensive stereotypes China has about Hong Kong.

Chinese officials are portrayed as both good and bad people - the collective generally means well, but individuals are self-interested with their own priorities. Some officials want to do things like forcefully recruit the powerful, but other internal factions recognize that this is a sh*t idea.

Spoiler

The current head of city S's decision makers is an older smart and thoughtful person, so he restricts a lot of the s*upider ideas from being implemented. The hidden implication so far is that he probably vanished from power later on and some of the less moral internal political factions of the government ran rampant afterwards.

[collapse]

There are several long-term plots that are in the beginning to medium phase right now, so there are lots of interesting political / interpersonal intrigues slowly playing out. The setting itself and the power system is also quite interesting. As far as the MC's ability transforming her but not directly faking her status info, the transformation ability is already super broken.

Spoiler

It changes the MC's DNA, as well as every identifiable feature (scent, magic feel, etc) so that she even gets access to race-specific benefits from items or detection arrays. Even with a 1-hour duration and long cooldown it's crazy good.

[collapse]

For it to be able to cover all traces and her status screen as well it would have to be SS tier at minimum. Also, it would completely drain the tension from the story during certain high-stakes confrontations. Not only that, but it's an ability that has a cool down, useful for disguise but not able to be used 24/7. She needs a way to hide her status screen no matter what, no matter when. Otherwise people would be able to find out her abilities.

The overall pacing of the story is not rapid, but there are so many things going on that it's never slow either. The story doesn't linger on sections where the MC levels up, but doesn't skip them completely either. Instead, there will be a brief focus on the leveling, a small update, before focusing back on whatever the MC is actually interested in. I do sometimes wish while reading that there was a small pinned blurb keeping track of her stats and skills every 10 or so chapters, but I also get that would mess with the pacing. Realistically speaking, that's just about my only complaint about the story itself.

The only other note is that occasionally pronouns get switched around, and that the translated names for some of the characters and skills are inconsistent. It would be great if someone could go back over the translation and standardize at least the skills so their names are more consistent, but by chapter 200 or so it's not really an issue anymore either. The character name thing is sadly still happening, but I guess at least they are consistent at this point? As far as I can tell, it's an issue where earlier on the translation of all names is pinyin, and later some switch partially or fully to translating by meaning. For example, Liang Shi => Liang Shark (or whichever, I've had a bit of a hard time figuring out who is who after the change, especially with the inconsistent pronouns, and occasional brother / sister flip-flops). I can understand that there are a bunch of puns that are less effectively conveyed by the pinyin, but it does mess up the reading experience, especially since it's happening with all kinds of minor characters. If someone has only obscure references to what they're up to or who they're running around with after a name change then how am I even supposed to figure out who this person is? Just guess?? <<less

I like how determined yet cautious the female lead is. She doesn't call herself a genius but I believe her extreme carefulness is what's smart about her. And I've been sick and tired of protagonists that basically just get lucky and have things handed to them. She earns her stuff through hard work, perseverance, and wit.

It's also been great following her journey as the world expands. A lot of novels really butcher it's plot once it starts ballooning the scope of its world but this novel transitions itself slowly enough... more>> and with enough sense that it only makes it better. And speaking of the world, while it is a game invasion world it doesn't involve itself in the same old tired RPG races and boring elemental skills and level systems. This world's power system is elaborate, the skills are all different and and interesting and the side characters are complex.

Spoiler

For the question about her disguise skill. It is still just part of an S level talent, not SS or SSS level and the disguise skill is only one of five skills that comes with that S level talent, of course it has set backs. All skills have set backs and limitations, even skills that are part of SSS level talents. The fact of the matter is that it's already a nearly indistinguishable disguise. The description of the skill is that it will disguise her appearance, body shape, and scent which is really good even if it doesn't say that it can disguise her status window. Plus, the main ability of her S level talent is thievery, the disguise skill is just a good bonus.

I for one think it's interesting that no skill is perfect.

Although the novel's title is about 'stealing the protagonist's opportunity, ' because the original protagonist was incompetent at saving their world and was instead defeated by the alien invasion, even though the novel didn't say it but I think this is one of the reasons for our MC's return to the past.

Spoiler

The original protagonist was so incompetent that within only around a hundred chapters, they were already powerless against the MC and abandoned by MC, who realized that focusing on self-strengthening was more important.

But because he is her biological brother she only finishing off the original protagonist around chapter 500+, and only doing everything bad behind the scenes.

I love the MC character's growth, from being constantly cautious of everything until she become strong and reveal her true nature.

All the characters in this novel have their own individual growth, and as the story progresses, the MC discovers the reasons behind everything that happened in her previous life,

Spoiler

But the story in the real world is only a small part of this novel. What I like is the reason behind the alien invasion that makes the MC participate in the God Game.

I love how the game became so Chaotic, especially if you like MC interaction with Zhao shuying? (Forgot about Xiao Zhao name) Then you need to read the arc God game: Nonsense Restrtaurant

[collapse]

What I don't like about this novel is the lack of news and information from countries other than China. This game exists all over Earth, but aside from other countries mentioned during the world chat and when the MC was taken by Tulan her pet dragon around China and almost outside the border, and maybe about bringing the dungeons gate under the sea to the mainland, other countries are never mentioned again.

This novel describes several races and species still at war in other worlds, but it never tells us what's happening on Earth; even the government depicted is only the Chinese government.

Nevertheless I think this novel is still interesting, if you like growing type MC you can try this novel

Not my cup of tea story.

The story is about regress big sister revenge by slow sadistic torture and she like to plan her act with meticulous scheme.

Well if you like revenge go ahead read it.

But if you those kind of guy that hate very slow process of sweet revenge and scream "just kill already damn it". Then this is not for you.

To be honest our female main character here is s*upid, she can kill but choose not to and then created problem / trouble for her self.

A fun setting but boring writing, it feels like you're watching a silent movie with occasional flashes of dialogue. It feels so dull that I'm hoping things will improve once the invasion begins, hoping that it's so dull simply because the author is rushing through this setting up stage.

C400

The story does get better after the invasion with a greater focus on the main character emotions, relationships and growth. The way the author builds on the idea of the previous life, the novel her brother was the son-in-law, the harem built... more>> around him, they were all really fun.

But at the same time, I have so much to nitpick that I can't bring myself to increase the rating to 4 stars. Just listing one that still makes me itchy:

Spoiler

The character starts with a S-rank talent with a disguise skill that can't be seen through skills or props, but still needs an item to disguise her own status screen, otherwise any random nobody will know its an obvious disguise, because her name and talent will still be the same? What kind of disguise is that??

Pretty good novel. It takes abit of time to loose the "her family and friends where\are evil" vibe you get with the setup as the novel isn't quite stereotypical in that regard.

The MC is great, she's not a good person but not really "evil" either, she's a mixed bag. She's also hilarious and most of what i've read so far is her absolutely trolling everyone who's wronged her.

The side characters is rather good too. Some more interesting that others.

It's absolutely worth a read.

SUPER FUN

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

This is a revenge-driven novel and what a well done job the author did in showing that.

... more>> MC, after a string of bad luck on last life, is reborn with questionable character. She's smart, petty, decisive, cruel, cunning, and really good at being green tea. She made it her life mission to bring torment to her ab*sers in last life, starring her full-blooded brother and his first/second/third wife. Honorable mentions to her and his parents and his sidekicks.

That being said, MC isn't just scheming all day. If anything can distract her from her revenge, it will be on consideration of her survival, getting stronger, or cats. Yes, cats. Enough said.

I would also praise how author did an amazing job in narrating MC's backstory. She really got royally screwed left, right, and center. Author will blend this in current timeline every now and then in case readers feel MC is being too rutheless in committing her many bad deeds. They really deserve it lol.

This is why I highly recommend this novel. 100 chapters in and I'm still rooting for MC's revenge. I'm no Mary Sue, but some novels really over does things. After some chapters, MC just becomes plain evil disguised as "revenge" by narration.

Not this one. MC has some skewed morals but she still got her bottom line and author really plays it well.

On other characters, they are nicely done too. The villains can actually be told apart aside their names. The personality and motivations are there. More importantly, thay aren't training dummies. They can actually think and have their little schemes. Watching them scheme against each other was pretty neat, too. Her allies were... I feel bad for MC. She got no one to trust 100% or even 50%. The "allies" she deals with are due to mutual benefits. Thankfully, she got an open relationship. With cats. Yes, cats. Enough said.

All in all, this novel is worth a read. Really WORTH a read. Check it out!

PS

The title is too real <<less

It's super good, this kind of novels give me life. It has so many different ideas, so much plot, the amount of different skills, it's really good writing, very funny too. 5/5 for sure.

I mean I was so sold when one of the first things she did to the s*umbag is cut his d*ck off. There are so many absurd things she does, I love it, she's awesome.

MC is extremely independent, her main skill is just perfect for her, "God of theft", it works really well with her character, she's... more>> a lowkey lone type of protagonist, sneaky, unexpected, she doesn't kill her main enemies, they're like refillable money bags, so she just goes and reaps them off once they're ripe, like a thief. And that's that, proper revenge, slow f*cking torture, they never know where it came from. And this is just one of the factors it's good.

There's a crazy amount of scheming in this novel, it's really tough honestly, nobody's soft here, most characters are pretty vicious, and the rest are just ruthless, in an ironic way, MC is pretty fair, for this novel's standard, don't get me wrong. I also like this, it's fresh, it's way more logical, characters are just benefit-driven, which is pretty realistic, especially in this scenario. There are no brain-dead weird plots here, benefit of no romance tag

Setting is awesome, I love the unravelling, at first it seemed simple, like okay, we got starting town 1, some basic skills like alchemy, cooking, etc., but it does become richer and richer, the aliens are seperated in factions, there's a lot of races, a lot of skills, alchemy is one of MC's specialty and even that gets to be explored a lot. MC has so many side quests, so much stuff to do, she's juggling a lot, in that respect, I have binged a lot of chapters at once because I want to know what she'll end up doing with everything. And one of the best aspects of this novel is definitely the varying skillset, it's extremely humorous, she has gotten so many items and skills and they're all pretty weird I can't wait to see them being put in use.

I'm definitely not a fan of reincarnation plots, but in a world that selfish, MC had to have a reason to unlock her potential to become more savage than anyone.

One of my personal cons, is that it does kind of get pretty slow at times, but that does happen for a reason, she has so many side quests (not literally), they all have to be given time to develop. It is chapter 230, and it still has not gotten deep enough, still dealing with pretty low-level dungeons, and a lot of grinding on MC's part, she's ahead of her peers but that's it, I hope to see her kick some actual powerful alien ass, get less into human-planet scheming and more into infiltration in enemy lines kind of stuff, that'd be more fun, I think that's what it's setting us up for. But slow pace does make for a great foundation, we'll see. So far it's really good. <<less
