Lu Hui (pen name: Jun Chaoman) was a popular writer on a web fiction platform, known for his no-CP stories. His latest infinite flow novel featured a protagonist so villainous, the platform had repeatedly flagged his work for revision.

Staring at the latest mu*der scene he wrote, Lu Hui let out a long sigh:

“What can I possibly do to save you?”

That very night, Lu Hui transmigrated into his own infinite flow novel.

The moment he opened his eyes, he saw his vengeful, easily blackened, cold-blooded, mu*der-is-nothing-to-him protagonist tied to a bed.

And he himself was sitting at the foot of that bed.

Lu Hui met his cold, mu*derous gaze:

“…..”

Truly a hell-level difficulty right from the start.

***

Because he knew his own character all too well, Lu Hui was very aware of what he needed to do to survive in the hands of this lunatic.

He used just enough mystery to preserve his life—but that very mystery also caught Ming Zhaolin’s interest. From that point on, every time they met again, unless Lu Hui came up with something new and surprising, Ming Zhaolin would try to kill him.

Everyone in this world knew that Lu Hui was Ming Zhaolin’s prey—prey that no one else was allowed to touch.

Once, a crazed follower of Ming Zhaolin took it upon himself to try to kill Lu Hui. As punishment, Ming Zhaolin crushed the man’s hand just because it had accidentally brushed against a strand of Lu Hui’s hair. His voice was laced with amusement, but carried unmistakable danger:

“You knew he was my prey, and you still dared to touch him?”

***

In this world, every player had a unique ability.

But Lu Hui’s ability was the most unique of them all—The God of Creation’s Card Deck.

He could draw cards that belonged only to him—cards no one else could use or command.

I loved the dynamic between the MC and the ML in this. They are so obsessively possessive of each other that everyone around them feels like they're extras. That's not to say that the supporting characters don't get fleshed out. They all have their own development arcs and some even change in ways that Lu Hui doesn't predict.

Lu Hui's ability isn't as mysterious or all-powerful as the summary makes it sound:

Spoiler

He's able to draw cards with elemental powers, but the hilarious (terrifying?) thing is that they all look like Ming Zhaolin. So other characters have the mistaken conception that he's able to capture their souls for his own use, which is why (they think) he's being hunted by Ming Zhaolin.

[collapse]

Lu Hui's real cheat is that since he's the author of this novel, he knows everyone and their abilities even better than they know themselves. His IQ is also off the charts, so he's able to deduce instances with an uncanny accuracy even though they're not ones he wrote himself.

The way the relationship between Lu Hui and Ming Zhaolin progresses is so interesting, from enemies that can't live under the same sky, to hunter and prey, to grudging collaborators, to some kind of co-dependent bond that hasn't broken the window paper to (finally) lovers that can't live without the other (even if they have to mu*der the other to make certain they won't).

Spoiler

Ming Zhaolin even takes the major reveal of Lu Hui's identity as Lu Hui put his soul into him. Other characters were written based on people Lu Hui knew, or for the purposes of the plot, but Ming Zhaolin was written for him. Lu Hui is afraid of pain, so Ming Zhaolin feels none. Lu Hui knows he's too soft sometimes, so Ming Zhaolin has no conscience. Lu Hui can't bring himself to kill, so Ming Zhaolin kills like cutting melons. Everything Ming Zhaolin is is based on Lu Hui.

Several characters even remark that Lu Hui seems like a nice person most of the time, but there are moments where he looks exactly like Ming Zhaolin in expression and/or temperament.

On the hilarious side, Lu Hui often laments why are you like this about Ming Zhaolin, especially when Ming Zhaolin's just done something terrible, and then he's like, oh, right, I made you like this, the boomerang has hit myself, FML.

[collapse]

This novel had just the right mix of levity, tragedy, and horror, and the first thing I wanted to do after I finished reading it was read it all over again. <<less
