Set in a fictional European country in 1924, a Japanese exchange student meets a mysterious, brilliant girl who only leaves the library to sleep. Her brother, a detective, relies on her mind to solve difficult mysteries, several of which draw her away from the library. With a drop of sweet romance, you will immediately become addicted to Gosick!!!

The companion series GosickS fills in some of the gaps before and between Gosick volumes. GosickS I takes place before Gosick I, GosickS II between Gosick IV and V, GosickS III between Gosick VI and VII, and GosickS IV between Gosick VII and VIIIa.

Note: Volume 9 is actually Volume 8 Part 2.

NOTE: I had to revise this review several times because MISTAEKS WERE MADE.

This is the worst light novel I've ever read. I wish I could give the author a piece of my mind.

Before you read Gosick, I'll tell you what it essentially is: Scooby Doo. The only good thing about Gosick is a cute blonde loli (Victorique) and some romantic moments. There's nothing "supernatural" about Gosick, just like how in Scooby Doo, it's always a guy in a suit trying to scare the gang away from the castle so that... more>> he can find the treasure, EVERYTHING in Gosick is fake - it's a facade that's dismantled into a boring reality by our favorite clever loli. Gosick can also be compared to the movie called The Village, where the disappointing climax at the end is that it's just normal people living in an ordinary world.

In Gosick, the main character is a Japanese boy who went to study abroad in a fictional European country, but why are all the other kids afraid of a small Asian boy who's so scared that he screams to a ghost story? The world may never know. They even call him "kuro shinigami" or, "black death-god."

When Kujou and Victorique go on board a ship, Victorique sits at a dining table, but there's no room left for Kujou, that is, until an actor named Ned Baxter tells Kujou that Kujou can sit in his lap, to which Kujou complies. Then, Ned proceeds to hand-feed Kujou, to which Victorique comments that they, 'make a cute couple.' Its genre ought to be classified as "yaoi", at this point.

What makes me mad is the lost potential for a creative supernatural mystery thriller. I like Kujou and Victorique and the romance between them, but it's not worth reading for that alone. <<less

This review is here to counter the one giving one star above.

It's a mystery, thrilling, and detective if you want, story. It would be silly to have any "supernatural" thing inside such a theme like this, as it is unconvincing and unpersuasive, let alone changing the entire initial plan of the author completely.

The very first few chapters already stated that our Victorique believes in sound, proved deductions than any supernatural things, even mocking the belief of the school about such "magical" thought. And it literally draws a whole crime scene... more>> with the victim being shot dead. What kind of ghost or demon using gun anyway? Of course somebody had to do it. And things like that go on as this is, again, a mysterious detective kind of story, revealing secrets. What's the problem with it being like Scooby Doo, that has people behind everything anyway? Scooby Doo by itself is also a good show.

The story was never meant to be a supernatural one to be called "lost its potential supernatural" thing, there isn't any tag like that in the description.

Overall, this is a well written kind of story with lots of scenery describing moments and all, just like from good old books. I was expecting something like the Ghost Hunt series, where, to me, the climax and plot twists don't really surprise me, in this time and day, anymore. But this is better, at least it did wow me when a mystery is solved, in a deductive way. <<less
