Enjoyable story, I guess?

It is decent but the ratings make it seem some sort of masterpiece. Truthfully there are quite a lot of problems but the glaring one is - lack of fear. The settings and the environment tries its best to make it seem like a horror, but soon you will realize that no one, and I mean literally no one ever dies who is even slightly interesting side character. There are deaths here and there but all of them were cruel or evil people. And that number too... more>> is hardly 3 or 4.

The plot also gets convoluted in the later half. And the comments below the chapters were... something. All that shipping between the protagonist and the male side characters did make me a bit sick and my ptsd from ORV rang again.

Anyway, give it a try ig but don't go in with super high expectations like me.

This novel deserves 3.7-3.8 stars imo. <<less

First review, haishd. Caught my attention because of all of the fanart and the fact that it was written by the author of DoD, love that novel, and even though this novel was definitely a genre change- I fell in love with this one too!

At first, it feels like MC's fear is downplayed and used as a gag, but as you read through the novel, we can see as the novel progresses that this isn't the case.

The reason he isn't 'fall down on his knees and cry' scared is because... more>> a multitude of reasons, but I'll sum it up to him being a 'use my damn knees to run and cry inside/later' character. He's scared, a lot, but the main point is that he understands the monsters like no other and has background information about the scenarios from his lengthy history of reading the site like a nerd everyday, and the fact that his phone literally has the wiki; and most importantly, MC is a character where when faced with the chance to save himself because he's scared or save others even if it means being scared, he will always choose the latter. That isn't his flaw being overseen for plot armor- theres moments where we see how this fear affects him and we see how he deals with this fear because ultimately, he refuses to let his flaws shackle him down.

He's a coward and he's scared, but his humanity and will to live outweighs that, so yeah he'll probably scream inside while doing it, but he'll persist. Which is a character I really fw.

Also I love the side characters. Villains or allies; they're all interesting personalities and they all get developed and they aren't just plot machines that bow down to the MC's will; they feel like real people with backgrounds, personal goals, flaws and quirks which made me fall in love with them so freaking much. <<less

I have seen a lot of positive reviews about this novel from Korean readers, and from what I've gathered, people misunderstand Kim Soleum (MC) 's nonchalant attitude as him being cold, emotionless, and powerful. Though– in reality he's actually quite cowardly, similar to the MC from INTKOT, if you enjoyed that kind of trope, you're in for a good ride, there are also some more interesting things the author added to this.

The novel combines horror with comedy, which are the misunderstandings. What makes it even more reassuring that it's good... more>> : the author is the same one who wrote 'Debut or Die', if you enjoyed that, I recommend giving this a try ^ _ ^

(This isn't related, but a big thank you to the person translating! The translations are great, looking forward to future chapters!) <<less

supernatural/paranormal horror where the protagonist isn't just a gary stu that ruins the story's tension, and where the horror takes the forefront instead of being the backdrop for a cheesy romance plot? Sign me up

very lethal company/scp-esque, interesting setting, interesting scenarios, immersive atmosphere, compelling protagonist, quality translations/reader experience, a very good read indeed

my interpretation of the MC is that he's a rational coward, while he is terrified by everything, he always keeps a clear head and possesses an analytical mind that helps him navigate extremely disadvantageous situations, this makes it... more>> seem like to the other characters that he's a calm, strong, unfazed man which creates funny misunderstandings <<less

I ran here to give a preliminary review. The most fun thing I'm reading, just in time for Halloween season.

It's a combination of a survival horror (with many survival death games, supernatural occurrences and an scp foundation resemblance) with an office setting (of the nature of a shitty company).

Disgruntled, strange and cowardly are my keywords for Kim Soleum. He's a funny protagonist that's well suited for the horror story he's transported into. So it's a fun story where everything is scary but the protag can always solve it in a... more>> fun sense haha.

The recommended age rating for this is 15+ for some slightly gruesome descriptions, dead bodies and potent horror content 👍 <<less

I had some doubts before starting this novel, but I'm honestly so glad I gave it a shot.

See all those five stars? Trust them—and read this story. I promise you won't regret it. It's absolutely worth it.

The story is rare in its own way. Sure, the beginning might seem a little cliché—a genius protagonist? Power-enhancing items? Yeah, all the usual stuff.

But Kim Soleum is anything but ordinary. He's a complex, lovable character. Every side character has depth, It's genuinely refreshing to see each one have their own voice and not... more>> just some random ncp with no presence or brain.

The MC isn't s*upid—in fact, I'd say he's one of the best "actors" I've ever seen in a story. The way he builds different versions of himself in the minds of others? *Fascinating.*

And inside? Well... he's a coward.

The bravest coward I've ever seen. (Because if I were in his place, I would've dropped dead from panic a hundred times by now.)

The character dynamics are rich and layered—every relationship has something different to offer, with its own emotional weight. It never feels boring or flat. But they are far from things that can end up in a romantic way so no worries about that either.

And records, the cases, the way he speedruns through puzzles—it's genuinely thrilling.

Admittedly, some of the early mysteries can feel a bit far-fetched or confusing due to limited explanations, which threw me off a bit (maybe I'm just slow), but I promise it gets better with time. Just stick with it.

There are scenes that'll make your heart race, your blood freeze, plot twists that'll make you drop your phone and stare at the ceiling.

Hilarious moments, gut-punching emotions, and even monsters you might end up loving (or not). It's one of those stories that quietly pulls you in, layer by layer, until you suddenly realize you're hooked—and there's no going back.

It's not just a mystery, or horror, or comedy. It's a survival story wrapped in performance, layered with human psychology, and sprinkled with just enough chaos to make it unforgettable.

If you're looking for a story with a creepy atmosphere, suspense, dark humor, and a protagonist who flirts with death more than once—who seems like the most capable person in the room while silently screaming inside—this one's for you.

Some spoiler for end of part one:

Spoiler

The end of Part 1 was *incredible*, and I feel the need to lay everything out.

In my opinion, it was the perfect way to wrap up the first arc. It explained everything that *needed* to be explained while cleverly leaving behind just enough unanswered questions to pave the way for Part 2. It was masterfully done.

The final chapters were complex, layered, and emotionally intense. But what truly stood out was how skillfully the author tied everything together—every thread, every hint, every shadowed moment. And just when I thought I had it all figured out, it ended with an even *bigger* question mark burning in my mind.

(Yes... that night, I cursed myself with everything I had for not waiting until the story was complete. Now I have to endure two months of madness until the author returns—and I *will* go insane waiting)

If you like SCP and similar mysterious/horror stories you will probably like this, the only problem is the MC and his cheat

Constantly terrified of everything "horror", so he reasonably speedruns any and all horror dungeons with his OP manual that shows the clearance conditions of all "creepy pastas"...

If it really was that big a deal he should pass out when surrounded by blood and body parts, maybe have some shakes in a corner instead of managing everything without any reaction other than thinking about how scared he is

MC will always... more>> rush through any dungeon with the win condition in sight, removing the thrill completely

The mystery and horror is almost non-existent so far, as he just needs to look up the clearance condition

Even when there is a problem with the "dungeon" changing or evolving, he just thinks "oh this ghost story evolved from SCP-1 to SCP-5, so if I just do XXX I can solve it"

He is also a super polite salaryman in the way he talks to people and acts, which is incredibly dull and from my pov seems unreasonable considering his life threatening job and experiencing horror stories constantly (some weird side plot going on where he acts like he has balls with only a single person just because that is supposedly a future big shot, when he doesn't care at all about all the people who are already big deals... basically he has a split personality only when around 1 specific guy) <<less

This is very entertaining and I have been reading it from 5 am now I have to go to school so I can't write a long review.

The MC is a coward but don't show it. He is kind of responsible and a good dude unlike many others in the place he is transmigrated to.

He is like an exception in a dimension. It radiated from his personality, in the world full of schemes and lie it seems to be him (pure) who is untainted by the world's aura as he is... more>> practically not from this world.

Anway in those creatures eyes he's a good person and yes compared to others he is even if he didn't agree him self.

How he behave and try to run is seen as opposite by others. Seeing him as a person of morals who wouldn't back down from adversities by even putting his life on the line to eliminate the creepy pastas.

Haha I think I stretch it too much I just let this novel down for a while as I am rereading some other novel. <<less

Unique and compelling world structure, plotline, and characters. Main character is relatable, yet takes initiative competently. Just like in debut and die, the intense life-and-death plotline and the emotional undertones in the relationships between the life-saving side characters and the MC touched me (and I'm not even into BL).

This author is the top author that I spent by far the most money on to read his works on the translated then the official platforms.

Our MC Kim Soleum is just too likable ~

Also, we should add the tag Righteous Protagonist here (at the time I wrote this, there isn't) just to show how our MC is still mentally adjusted and upholding morality (where he could) despite all the ridiculously fatal situations that happen where he better discards it for better survival.

Even after helping, and saving others, in the process sometimes even sacrificing his benefits to do so... HE DOESN'T EVEN THINK THAT IT IS A BIG DEAL!?

Just because we follow his POV doesn't mean... more>> we know him well. That's cause he tends to downplay his act of saving others and thinks that without them, he couldn't make it.

Well Kim Soleum, without you they would be dead.

An MC that is both timid and scared by the constant horrors around them but virtuous enough to risk his life to do what is right at the same time, who wouldn't like him? Even the horrors like him!

He's such a good boy, that's why we love him so much.

Kim Soleum alone is the 4 stars of this novel, the remaining star is everything else in this novel (To me at least). <<less

Genuinely one of the best Korean horror novels I have read. The horror isn’t the main focus for me, though. It’s the writing style and the side characters. The side characters are SO well fleshed out, I want to pull them out of the screen and hug them. I love the MCs dynamic with all of them (especially Braun).

I honestly don’t understand why some people call the MC op or “too convenient”. If you were actually reading it, then you would see his character development and growth. Yes, he calls... more>> himself a coward one too many times, but hasn’t the author already established the fact that MC is an unreliable narrator? Obviously MC is hiding something, his erratic thoughts and contradicting actions are huge red flags.

also
Spoiler

he’s already gotten corrupted by Braun. There’s also a possibility that his original world was a ghost story (most popular theory so far)

But please check this out. The fandom is growing and is fairly big global-wise. (Fandom is HUGE in Korea) The creepypasta element is definitely there, and MC is a hilarious chaotic mess. <<less

Please read this novel.

If you have any question as to whether or not you should, please just read this novel.

This series isn't perfect. There's moments where it drags, the protagonist feels like he's getting through things a little too easy, and even parts where you might question whether reading it is worth it.

... more>> I promise you all these feelings will make sense/nullify themselfs. You just have to keep reading it.

Do you like stories where on the second read through you pick up on clues to major events that occur way later in the series? Do you like suffering in knowing both too much about the plot and too little? Do you enjoy watching a protagonist slowly (or not so slowly) loose his mind over and over again?

Then read this novel.

In all seriousness GSGW is a really good story. The protagonist is a scaredy cat but that doesn't stop him from acting smart (if you've ever had an adrenaline rush while seriously afraid you know why this works), the characters are well written (even though in some cases it takes some time for them to be), and honestly this is the best story that I've read in a long while.

I'm a prolific reader. I read hundreds of stories a year across different mediums. This one is good enough I actually read it every time a new chapter comes out, which is something I never do. That's how good it is.

If anything I'd argue the major flaw with gsgw is that you kinda have to wait for the payoff in some senses and some people aren't willing to stick around for it. Everything makes sense. All the parts that you dislike because it feels s*upid or overpowered or whatever reason make sense. You just have to read it all.

I anxiously await part 2. Hopefully you'll soon be anxiously awaiting it too. \ (≫_<) / <<less

I am someone who doesn't like horror 'cuz I'm a scaredy cat. But-

Wow. Like WOW. I got ABSORBED into the story!

Super Highly Recommended!!!

... more>> I'm gonna let this simmer until it gets completed 'cuz I can't wait with all the cliffhangers. You could say I sprinted through the chapters with relish and it's just so good.

For one, you could say the MC is a Gary Stu (the equivalent of Mary Sue, guy version). But it's just so fun to see how he solves the situation in a form that saves himself and others.

The fluidity, world building, elements and side characters are just.... love ittttt.

Know what? My regret in this novel is that I read it when it's still ongoing! I've been eyeing this novel but I just couldn't wait! Now I regret it!

Ahhhh!! I'll be back again! <<less

What can I say? It's peak. It's so, so very peak. As other reviewers have noted, if you're a ProjMoon fan, you'll adore this webnovel. It's everything I've ever wanted in a LobCorp novelization even though it's not at all a LobCorp novelization.

Got Dropped into a Ghost Story, Still Gotta Work, or Ghost Story Gotta Work (GSGW) for short, is a KR isekai-into-an-infinite flow webnovel. It's really popular in Korea (it's actually rated 10/10 on KakaoPage as of my writing this lol) and for really good reason. Like any good... more>> infinite flow, all the scenarios are wonderfully unique and super thrilling. (It's not much of a horror, but reading this does make me a bit wary of turning off the lights, haha.) Additionally, the protagonist, Kim Soleum's, solutions are all fittingly suited to the situation. Even though he's given an advantage by his knowledge of the ghost stories, the solutions aren't necessarily always "let's break this completely by the power of my OP MC hacks." (It sometimes is for the minor scenarios, but the main scenarios usually have some other solution.) It's his unique knowledge that allows him to come up with these solutions, but all of them are limited by the logic of the world and/or ghost story.

For a moment, let's actually talk about KSE. Other reviewers are a little right: he's kind of a Mary Sue, but I'd argue that the execution of the novel is good enough that his "perfection" doesn't really matter. It's because the author understands the concept of consequences. For every win that KSE has, he's still penalized in some other way, whether that be through mental contamination or stressful office politics or some other secret third thing. Even very small victories might lead to huge losses later down the line. By carefully considering the outcomes, both positive and negative, of KSE's actions, the author does a pretty good job of balancing him. It also helps that he's pretty likable. His internal monologue is humorous and a perfect balance between aware and oblivious (coward dropped into a ghost story, but Soleum-ah... you're not a coward!! You're crazy!!!) . He's also really kind, but never to the extent of being overly righteous, so you always want to root for him.

Speaking of that, KSE's kindness is one of my favorite things about GSGW, since it treats it as both the boon and bane that it is. Because of his kindness to both ghost stories and people alike, he's able to solve ghost stories in an unprecedented way, but his kindness also gets him into a lot of hot water. It also contributes to the story's main throughline, which seems to be about understanding fear and what makes you fearful, and moving past that fear to gain a better understanding of others, no matter how terrifying they might be. It's also surprisingly metatextual, since it discusses ghost stories as both "entities" and "stories." If you enjoyed Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint for its great metatext, I think you'll really enjoy GSGW too.

The pacing of this webnovel is top-notch. It's never so fast that you can't quite keep up, but it's never so slow that you get bored. Maybe because of all the shifting pieces below the surface, the setting that's never quite safe, or the compelling cast, even the more dull moments in GSGW are interesting. Also, although the main "loop" of GSGW is pretty straightforward ("got dropped into a ghost story but I have work to do..."), each scenario and the framing around each scenario is unique enough that it's never too repetitive. The overarching plot is always moving forward, and there's always some sort of mystery to solve. And regarding mysteries, the author has done a really good job of resolving plot threads. Even the smallest discrepancies seem to get brought up later. Since the novel isn't finished, I won't speak too much on this, but so far, it's really satisfying.

The side cast is great. They're so entertaining. All the characters are uniquely fun and/or well fleshed out (especially if you look past KSE's biases), and I haven't found a single one to be particularly irritating. The novel does a great job of bringing back old side characters to better develop them as well, which is important when there's so many. There's never a case where it feels like the author forgot about a side character, since when it feels natural, they return.

That all being said, I will admit that GSGW isn't perfect. At times it feels like KSE never fits perfectly into the setting, and we never really get to know him better outside of his reactions to the world around him. While I do get the feeling that it'll probably get addressed later on, as we stand now, KSE is fun, but he might feel a little too impenetrable for some readers. I think in later arcs, this is improving slightly. I'm looking forward to how Baek Deoksoo writes him in the future!

TLDR; I've re-read it twice, my mental contamination is at 100%, and I sleep with a nightlight now. Great webnovel, 10/10. My wallet will soon be emptied as I attempt to pay for the KR raws. <<less

This is definitely one of my favourite horror novels on this site. It's incredibly well translated, creative and interesting in its ghost stories, and the main character is such an unreliable narrator that he manages to shine despite his 'I'm an everyman first person protagonist' aura.

I like how this series, despite it obviously taking inspiration from series such as SCP, doesn't copy it beat for beat. The world is totally different, and the motivations of the involved parties and style of the supernatural entities they manage are totally different.

The side... more>> characters are memorable and fun, each and every one of them. And rather than dulling down Kim Soleum, our MC, they manage to somehow make him more interesting to us, the audience, as they give us extra context and clues that our unreliable narrator buddy excludes.

I've read the other work written by this author, Debut or Die, and I VASTLY prefer this one. The stakes feel much more tangible, the skin of the teeth escapes are far more exciting, and maybe I'm just more fond of monsters than stories of self acceptance.

Please read this story and witness the adventures of Kim Soleum, the most employable person alive (apparently). <<less

I was super excited to hear the author of ‘Debut or Die’ was creating a new novel. The story is enjoyable with its different concepts and world-building. The story keeps the horror aspect intact but it's also really funny! Personally, the characters are interesting to me and are pretty funny... Though I wasn't expecting anything less since I fell in love with ‘Debut or Die’ because of the characters! I do see similarities like how the author makes the MC seem nonchalant on the outside but secretly panicking within and... more>> the misunderstandings with everyone around (lol). The MC for this book is fun though! With all the gorey descriptions his little comments really lighten the mood.

I can’t wait to see what will come next! <<less

Reading this feels like getting waterboarded in the best way possible.

The ghost story in each arc is fantastic and unique. The world building feels thorough, and introduced slowly so that it is easy to follow.

Despite having some advantages from the transmigration, the MC still faces real challenges and solve them through logic, relying on their own ability.

... more>> The side characters are both memorable and entertaining. Despite some of them being objectively terrible people, I can't help but be attach to them.

Last thing I want to mention is the use of typography in this novel. The distinct formatting clearly separates the main story from the ghost story records which improve the narrative flow. The changes in font size and colours also helps with immersion. <<less

Welp, bring out pitch fork and and torches, cause I'm about to do what nobody here has done, I'm about to criticize this novel.

1. Protagonist's 'fear'.

While we can claim that protagonist is an unreliable narrator, and nothing he says should be taken at a face value, as he always tries to present a utilitarian logic behind saving others while the actual reason being that he's just a nice guy, we cannot claim the same when it comes to his fear. Not when omniscient narrator himself says that the protagonist is... more>> a coward, a huge coward, mind you. But this fear of his is never, never, detrimental to his actions, it's merely a quirk he has, not much dissimilar to how other novels' protagonists who have detrimental conditions never suffer for them.

It feels especially jarring because we are reminded of this quirk of his, by himself and the omniscient narrator, every few lines whenever something creepy is going on.

2. Side characters.... are just there.

Side characters, as of chapter 35, are wholly underdeveloped. The only memorable character being the Lizard man, but that's because he's a lizard man. Aside from that quirk of his he's not really memorable.

3. Protagonist coming across something convenient when he needs it.

It is so prevalent among these novels that I feel like I shouldn't even complain about it, but yes, he gets what he needs when he needs it.

4. No sense of mystery, suspense or horror.

There's not really much sense of mystery, horror or suspense because protagonist has a booklet that lists everything that has ever happened during an scenario. So when it tries to formulate a sense of mystery by not letting protagonist access wiki, or simply making him forgetting to do so, it feels animated and fake.

5. World building is nonexistent.

It's supposed to be our world with horror stories springing up everywhere, but how far exactly this phenomena reaches is not clear. Is it a country wise phenomenon or a global? Is the company he works in a domestic company or international? We don't know, because just like a marvel movie, in which no place except America exists, here, nothing exists outside of South Korea.

6. Elite characters are incompetent.

People who are supposed to be at the forefront of darkness exploration, ones charged with keeping cosmic horrors in check, are incompetent. At least, they become so whenever protagonist is nearby.

But hey, maybe I just don't get the appeal behind this novel and it's just not for me, as there's pretty much no negative review of this novel there must be something good about it, though even if I can't see it. So don't let my points discourage you from reading it if you think positive points other people here have listed are appealing enough. Though I'll maintain that my points are valid, and this novel is being praised a bit too much. <<less

A not so subtle love letter to SCP with a unique setting so that they can use their works and profit. We have a fun nuance to an OP protagonist, but its role in this story is fitting. This is a humorous story, and excellently done. If you're not a fan of horror, but somewhat curious this protagonist will feel like a good entry into the genre. It receives my highest rating. Its a blast. If you're not familiar with SCP google SCP wiki. It's an open source horror writing... more>> project for a community to enjoy the craft of writing. This story plays with themes with an Asian world view, but it still uses some familiar feeling things. I'm pretty taken with it. Easily see an adaptation as a possibility for it.

The story may be a little fast-paced but this is absolutely perfect for me. It doesn't drag on so many chapters of one event. It's understandable to see that the MC is a little OP with his cheats and fast problem solving skills that literally makes him speedrun multiple death instances but I find I don't really mind that aspect, considering that his likeable personality really shines through. Take note of the unreliable narrator element because boy is the MC the definition of an unreliable narrator.

I love the story, anything with thriller/ horror elements really. And I can imagine myself be like the MC in real life, well maybe not in being able to solve problems. If I'm ever transmigrated in a horror story, I'd be really scared. I can't handle looking at ghosts. Just reading is fine.

The story elements are somewhat similar to this Chinese novel 'What's Wrong With Seeking Death?'. But what I like more with this novel compared to the other one is that the pacing is just right. I like stories... more>> with faster resolutions, such as the mc's pace in completing the 'ghost story'. Can't wait for more chapters :D <<less

This is currently one of the top novels in Korea, and since it's written by Baek Deoksu, the writer of the "Debut or Die", I just had to read it, and my GOAT just never fails me, this is another BANGER!!

MC accidentally transmigrates into an urban lovecraftian world after winning a merch from his fave horror/scp-like franchise, where he has to work in a suspicious pharmaceutical company to harvest "dream essence" in ghost stories to create miracle drugs, and one of said miracle drugs is the "wish ticket" that can... more>> grant any wish aka his only way (so far) to go back to his original world.

The only thing is- MC is a coward. Thus his (mis) adventure commences.

Aside from the interesting premise, I just have to commend the author's creativity as this is essentially the same concept as the Chinese QT novels but this was done infinitely better. Every arc/ghost stories explored are entertaining and the way to solve it is very creatively done. This is such a breath of fresh air because light novels tend to recycle the same sh*t but in different fonts but this- Deoksu somehow manages to put out an original novel and still manage to squeeze in classic tropes. I also love how the author didn't drag the arcs unnecessarily and just finish it when it needs to end so we get a varying long arcs that are action-filled and short arcs that slow down the story's phase but somehow still important to the story and aren't just "fillers"

I also love the 3 major factions, from the morbid company that is Daydream where psychopaths thrive, the "hero's" of the Supernatural Disaster Management Bureau where you'd think they're better than Daydream but tbh they're not (Daydream is just a lot more honest lmao), and cluster f*ck that is the Church of the Luminous Unknown aka a cult of mentally unstable beings.

The world building is fantastic as well, the blend of the "real" world and the lovecraftian universe is just so well and creatively done, I'd honestly love to explore it more in a side story. The characters and team dynamics are also fantastic from the found family that is Squad D, The Black Tortoise Team, the Rookies- I love them all, and yes even Baek Saheon, the loveable bastard that he is. His dynamic with the MC is probably my fave in the novel lol.

I also would love to praise the translators, they did a fantastic job in translating this, they made the story more immersive with their little creative fonts, color changes, etc. I love it and would love to see more from this team.

This is still currently on going, but I can't wait to see where the author takes us. Absolutely 5 star rating, it deserves it. <<less
