Grace Gurton has been harboring a one-sided love for months.

The object of her affection is Richard Spencer, the Young Earl of Spencer.

Heir to the Spencer family, an aristocracy older than the royal family itself and standing at the king’s side, and Captain of the Rugby Club at Christ Church College.

The embodiment of refined, aristocratic elegance. Impeccably perfect attire.

A masculine and handsome face, combined with a towering height that stands out anywhere.

A rugged and god-like ferocity on display during rugby matches, as though the god of war himself has descended.

From afar, Richard Spencer appeared flawless.

At least, until Grace received an adoption proposal from Lady Mary Montague, Richard’s aunt.

And until she discovered the reality of Richard Spencer, a self-centered narcissist who seems to live as though the world revolves around him.

Grace Gurton has always admired famous rugby player, Richard Spencer, but what she doesn't know is that he's an infamous narcissist.

Kind of shocked at the other reviews, because I found the story pretty shit. This is mostly going to be a rant, but I hope to be more rational.

I found a lot of problems that I'm going be elaborate on.

... more>> First of all, the characters.

Richard Spencer is rumored to be a narcissist, but what would you know? He just has tons of mommy issues. And daddy issues, as well. And brother issues. He just has issues, and now he's become a big issue himself. The rumor births from the fact that he's often found staring at his reflection in a lake. How f*cking dramatic is he, lmao.

But aside from my trivial nitpicks, Richard is not a loveable ml. Yes, he's meant to be a shitty ML at the beginning, I understand, but he has little to no character development at the end, as well. Not enough for me to be satisfied with. He is heavily prone to misunderstandings (which is an obnoxious theme in the story I'll discuss later as well), and constantly belittles Grace because of that. Even in his apologies, his arrogance and narcissism shines through and through.

Spoiler

When he blamed Grace for not revealing to him his Aunt's illness and hurts her, instead of apologizing, he accuses her of the audacity and shamelessness to date other men shortly after his Aunt's death. When he does apologize a 100 chapters later, it's a half-baked, insincere one where he briefly says, 'I apologize' and elaborates by proposing to her, like wtf man. He wants to do a 'grand gesture', and what better than proposing himself as a partner as one?

When Grace (rightfully) rejects his initial proposal, he has the f*ckING audacity to think that he shouldn't waste time with her anyways and go back to his post as proxy Earl. LIKE APOLOGY MY ASS. I have seen mls do get on their KNEES for less, and this man thinks he's too good for her and BARELY tries.

And don't you dare begin with, 'oh, he's unsympathetic because of his childhood influences' blah blah. Then you admit he has zero c.d?

[collapse]

We have our other MC, our FL Grace Gurton, who's as pathetic and as unlikeable as the ml.

I personally hate the trope of falling in love at first sight, especially when it comes to wishy-washy, pushover damsel-in-distresses like Grace Gurton. Similarly, she has little to no character development as well.

She falls in love with Richard in the first place because... he's hot? She barely knows him, let's get this part straight, and yet I never understood how these women fall so hard. It's unrealistic and obnoxious.

When Richard does the bare minimum, she praises him. When Richard insults her, she shows leniency and makes excuses for him. It doesn't help that she stutters, and of course, this is NOT an attack on those who have the same disorder. Instead, I'm annoyed how stuttering folks are regarded as 'weak' and 'fragile'. It's too stereotypical, and I hoped that this novel would go beyond such tropes and do something original.

Spoiler

She easily forgives Richard when he gives his half-assed apology, but refuses his proposal. I was happy when she did, but her reasonings disappointed me. She did it because... she deemed herself as 'unworthy' of him. Sigh. These characters seriously have no c.d.

[collapse]

The other characters were as unlikeable and obnoxious as them. I don't think I liked a single character in this story.

Moving on, the story's entire basis is MISUNDERSTANDING. There are more misunderstandings than plot. And god, the misunderstandings they are.

Is there even a story in the first place? 100 chapters and yet I don't think anything substantial occurs. It's like a cozy, slice-of-life kind of story. I don't know why I didn't drop this in the first 50 chapters. <<less

In my opinion it's a good read. And it can be better in my opinion. What I do like is that both leads are layered characters. Flawed in their own right but becomes better as the story progresses. Which majority is Richard the male lead. And really he is the type you can find in any pride male leads and not understanding that his rough attitude is pushing away his love interest when he shows it. But the author knows that and shows that he doesn't get what he wants... more>> and learns to earn it. As well as the nicely portrayed class gap between nobles and commoners. And the way it was written is like the good old classical english which I really like not gonna lie.

So yeah I recommend. It's good if you want that good English feel of pride and prejudice kind of writing I guess. I think it would make a nice read. <<less

This is so interesting. The humor, each character's problems, and the metaphor in between chapters. The plots are fun yet warm, and it could be a little heartbreaking, but it doesn't last long. The characters are full of life. The FL is the epitome of a woman; sometimes she can be frustrated and sad about what happens in life, but most of the time she stands tall with all her might; she cries and she laughs; she can be weak in comparison with the other characters, yet she remains strong... more>> and resolute in every problem she faces. The ML is that typical arrogant aristocrat, but he tried to do better. Every character has flaws, yet at the same time, it could be their power to move forward for a better day, for a better person than yesterday. Even though some were beyond safe and repair, their ending simply suited them best.

Also, I need to give all the flowers to the translator because of how eloquent their vocabulary is. They make this whole ride enjoyable until the very end. <<less

I found another gem. This story is not heavy or full of angst but it gave me a roller coaster of emotions. I got bored at the first part of the novel maybe because its setting the characters and events but reaching chaps 30+ gave me interest, the plot was finally moving. I love the writing style of the author. The metaphors, symbolism, similes was so creative tho I didnt get it ay first but it would be gradually explained and realized later on. I love the character development of... more>> Richard and Grace, as well as the other characters. SHOUTOUT TO SEBASTIAN, the best wingman of all time. I love the humor of this novel truly and dearly. It made me laugh a lot of times lol. I would like to reread this again in the future. <<less

It a good read. The characters are very 3d, true to their peronalities. It has a comedic undertone and a very good plotline.

The flaws of this novel are that it has the tag-it is not a smut novel. And author very extensively defines each situations, a lot of time that is not necessary.

Overall a very enjoyable read, 8.5/10 recommended.
