The story isn't bad, and the writing isn't horrible, it's just a single issue that ends up spoiling the immersion of it.

This novel suffers from the so-called "First-person narrative that fails to express the character's personality and individuality".

This kind of problem is a bit frustrating as it's hard to empathize with the person narrating as they don't seem to have a personality, just narrating a series of neutral thoughts.

As the other review mentioned, with this kind of story it's important to identify with the MC, as everything revolves around her,... more>> and the reader wants to root for her success. But when she describes everything in a robotic tone it's a little frustrating. And no, it's not part of shy, cold or calculating personality, it's just... lack of a well-defined voice for the character, a problem that I find A LOT in novels narrated in first person. We can only see the world through the eyes of the character who is narrating, and if that character doesn't carry her own perspective and personality, everything else seems insufficient as well.

In third person, the narrator has the freedom to better describe the main character's reactions and expressions what ends up fleshing out the character. But in first person, the main character is observing and describing others, so it makes it more difficult to define her own personality, since we don't see her "as others see her". The other characters being described by the MC are more defined than her and I have a good idea of who they are, but not her. To avoid this problem, usually, what we see is the character's internal conflict, which teaches us about her, or their thoughts lead us in the direction of the character's personality, something like a vivacious character often thinking funny things, or a cold character choosing to ignore someone's words, but in this case her internal monologues are more clinical and practical, again, robotic. So it's rare that we see something that makes us get attached to MC.

It's funny that this type of novel when adapted to manga/manhwa has a great chance of being better, because the illustration adds emotions and reactions that were not expressed in the writing

Sorry if I seem like I'm making an unnecessary explanation even though I'm not an expert by any means, 😅 it's just that I thought about it a lot when I read "The Man Picked Up By the Gods" which suffers from the same problem, but in the manga, the series was well represented and flows a lot better.I just wanted to put that feeling into words. <<less

It's not bad, but it feels kind of... boring?

Case-in-point: I read until chapter 16 and am temporarily dropping it because of the many paragraphs of random ramblings all about the FL's thoughts that just. Never. End. There's a difference between FL making wise conjectures and endless back-and-forths that feel so tedious to read. I couldn't even process what she was thinking about because it was just so tiring to read through entire chunks about essentially nothing!

Also the translation mixes up pronouns quite a bit, and some parts can be confusing,... more>> however the translator seems to be giving it their best efforts so I can't fault them. And it's not a major turn-off or deal-breaker, at least for me.

My main problem with the story is that it's ALL about FL's life (people doting on her, her trying to find out what her evil uncle is up to, trying to prevent herself, her mom and her grandpa from dying) which wouldn't have been an issue IF I was even remotely interested in the FL in the first place. Which I'm not. How am I supposed to care about the story, plot and side characters who all revolve around the FL in some way if I don't even feel attached to the FL??

I know this sounds quite harsh, but I just find the characters not very compelling and bland (there's almost nothing interesting about them despite us having been introduced to FL, FL's mother, grandfather, uncles, cousin, etc), and the plot also doesn't seem mind-blowing. Combined with lackluster writing, it makes for a rather unexciting story.

I still gave it 3 stars because of:

    1. Benefit of doubt since I've only read 16 chapters
    2. I feel bad for the translator, who seems quite nice
    3. The story is readable and enjoyable at certain parts
It just doesn't stand out and I don't think I'll remember the plot or characters of this story in two days' time. Heck, right now I can't even remember the FL's name. <<less

The pace is but slow... you might get bored easily. The writing, the plots, the characters are a bit..... you know.... how do I say it. Anyways I think MC is... umm a bit boring. Not so confident or sometimes overly confident. Also maybe because I am comparing her to other MC's so I feel a bit disappointed in her. And the ML I guess so, Jeffery is such a cute green flag. I love his character. Otherwise if you are looking for fluffy family moments it's better to not... more>> to look forward to it. There are some but.... you shouldn't look forward to it.

Overall it's good as long as you don't have anything else to read to in your hand. That's it. <<less
