[It’s a familiar dungeon.] Inside a medium-boss room of an RPG game that he played again and again until he can get there with his eyes closed, waiting for a hero, a demon who exists only to be defeated, got his former life memory revived.

Knowing that, in his previous life, he was a nothing-special college student, he could not continue living as a to-be-defeated mid-boss.

He was determined to defeat the boss and escape the dungeon.

That which was obtained in the process was a doping item called “pearl piece” (JP: ”珠片”). He, the demon who was ordered by the goddess to collect the 15 pearl pieces that were scattered around the world, decided that while on this quest, he at least would enjoy travelling around his favourite RPG game world. His name would one day become the legend of the Demon God of Oeyama, and his tale the demon romance story.

It is a good story, with decent characters. However, later the story becomes confusing because a combination of factors. Change of pov, addition of flashbacks between the changes of pov, and time between release dates. I do not mind different povs if it flows well with the story, but I do not fell it does here.

Um. Last chapter translated is chapter 2, and it was at the end of year 2015. It is kind of interesting so far, though the MC, if we disregard the reincarnation thing, breaks from his bindings as a mid-boss because of a strange confluence of events. Or as we call it, luck/destiny/plot. Currently, I am wondering if the story will keep all the game elements (the dungeon he was sealed in was so old-style RPG, with actual safe rooms to heal and save, and bosses waiting in their rooms) or... more>> if there will be unexpected twists. <<less

Story rating: Some original ideas (as of v3c4)

It is a mostly by the numbers alternate world story. The main character is overpowered, but not overly so. So far the villains seem one dimensional but there are hints that there is more than meets the eye. Nothing in particular stands out or is so interesting it rises from the pack. It is sufficient to be somewhat entertaining.

Translation Quality Rating: English as a second language

The translation from asthmatic spider is quite bad. In the site info he says he uses machine... more>> translation and then "serious editing" which is either not true or his English is just bad. Often times you will find English phrasing that makes no sense or does not flow, like if everyone had Yoda speech. For instance the sentence "Indeed, the difference of heaven and earth between you and I, I understood it well." No one who knows English talks like this. A proper translation would phrase it more like "Indeed, I understand the difference between us to be like heaven and earth." Even then, I don't know if the phrasing of heaven and earth should be kept in English. In general, every one of asthma translations is like this.

Age Rating: Probably PG13

Some violence, no over 18 stuff, and no glorifying of s*avery (unlike shield hero). <<less

It's a good example of an op MC who tries to stay out of things and let the world do it's thing. The characters are pretty interesting, but the chapters can feel overly descriptive. A lot of the exposition could use a tldr at the bottom, because it can feel quite repetitive. If the story picks up and the ratio of exposition to character interactions increases in the near future, I will increase the rating from a 4 to a 4.5 or 5.

Enjoyable, fun, entertaining -- I feel these three words aptly describe Grimoire x Reverse so far.

The story itself is good. While not altogether unique it is executed in its own style. In addition, the characters have their own personalities that are actually believable. The flow is a bit chaotic at times but not impossible to understand. (partially due to the story itself, the rest being the translator.)

However, with these being said the series is not the most amazing thing you'll ever read, let alone the translation quality. To further... more>> add onto this : the translation done by Asthmatic Spider is... sub-par to put it as nicely as possible or downright painful to put it bluntly. Many meanings are lost due to the MTL and to add the icing to the cake : the editing does not make it much easier to understand due to lack of their understanding of the English language. (or effort editing, but I'll go with the prior because I don't like downplaying peoples effort.) Keep in mind that not the entire translation is of this quality, but enough to be important.

In summation : the story is enjoyable and good while the character interactions are great. The translation quality is butchered by MTL and not made much better by editing but if you have a firm grasp of English it is still readable.

Review of the story itself : 4.1/5

Review of the story + Translation : 3.2/5 (Remember : 2.5 is average which means it is neither bad or good)

Edit) Translation has improved by leaps and bounds and is quite enjoyable to read. Though now I can admit that some of the events are kind of... strange. Like they're not bad but I have to question the direction in which the author is going with this story. I can see the goal of what they want, but the journey to said goal is starting to be a bit convoluted. <<less

It's a game world with level ups but no stats. Power levels are abstract and the characters are overpowered at one point and weaklings a moment after due to author's whim. Sometimes he uses levels to portrait power but ignores it for most of times. It's a mess.

MC only solves things with pure strenght, bashing things. Eventually he finds someone stronger, uses a magic stone, get stronger and bashes the enemy in the same way, but with more power... rinse and repeat for every fight.

Hirago is only there to... more>> play tsundere and kidnapped/bullied princess.

Translation goes bad really fast with weird dialogues with no meaning. At first MC takes the game story into consideration, but in vol2 he says 'f*ck it' and just does whatever he wants.

Had potential but failed to live up to it. Don't waste your time. <<less

i read the novel on syosetu, gotta admit I enjoyed it until middle half.

the web novel feels like it got rushed ending to me and when they say its fun etc but I dont see which part of the conversation is fun/interesting it kills my interest and I just fast read till the end.

idk if this translation translate the WN or the LN ones, but maybe you can hope for different ending for the LN
