He Cultivates the Ruthless Path As A Substitute

Everyone in the Fourteen States knew that Zhao Zhao was just a substitute. It was because he had a face that looked like the crown prince of the Celestial Clan, Mo Yu; that he turned from a wild chicken into a phoenix and was noticed by the God of War, Chang Yuan, who shook the three realms, and was accepted as his disciple. Such a master-disciple relationship is doomed to not last long. When the real disciple of the God of War, Mo Yu, wakes up, he will probably pack up and leave.

As the person involved, Zhao Zhao also knows that he is just a dispensable substitute. But it doesn’t matter, as long as this master can help him get rid of the days of living under someone else’s roof.

When it comes to pleasing people, he is a professional.

Zhao Zhao is very conscious of fulfilling his basic cultivation that a substitute should have, so as to comfort his master’s longing for his favourite disciple. His favourite disciple is a gifted and rare genius in the immortal world for thousands of years. So, Zhao Zhao forgets to eat and sleep, and works hard to cultivate. The favourite disciple is very knowledgeable and has a good handwriting, so he reads and writes without getting sleep, and practices calligraphy.

He also took care of everything that the favourite disciple didn’t have time to do.

Zhao Zhao had only one goal: to hold on to Chang Yuan’s thigh and stay away from the dangers of the world. Until one day, Mo Yu woke up.

#Master has only one heart. Master’s favorite disciple suddenly woke up. What should I do to keep the glory in front of me and not look too embarrassed? #Or, before both parties become too embarrassed, just run away.

**

Chang Yuan had always disliked this little disciple who had gone to great lengths to scheme against him and become his disciple on the basis of having a similar face to his beloved disciple Mo Yu. He knows very well that this little thing looks obedient and soft, who loves to please people. But in fact, he is selfish and full of evil thoughts, and would do anything to achieve his goals. His “core” is completely different from the bright and talented, heavenly disciple Mo Yu.

There are three thousand paths to cultivate. But according to his disciple’s temperament, he will definitely choose the most opportunistic one.

Until that day, when the young man appeared under the fierce wind and thunder with a sword in his hand and covered in blood, Chang Yuan realized that the “little spoiled child” in his eyes has chosen the most resolute and difficult path among the three thousand great paths – the Ruthless Path.

Then later, Chang Yuan found a portrait of another man in the room of his cheap disciple. The man in the painting looked 70% like himself. The boy who had always acted cute and coquettishly in front of him said with regret: Although he is not as gentle, considerate, and patient as Shifu, I can still barely fall asleep looking at his face.

Chang Yuan:?

Chang Yuan later realized that the little thing had been pestering him and trying so hard to worship him as a master because he looked like the man in the painting.

**

Everyone knows that the God of War Chang Yuan has a disciple in his heart. He is the son of the Heavenly Monarch and the crown prince of the Heavenly Clan, Mo Yu. Many years ago, he fell into a long sleep because he blocked the calamity for Chang Yuan. In order to wake up his disciple, Chang Yuan traveled all over the world to find a cure. Later, Mo Yu woke up. Everyone thought that the Three Realms would finally be peaceful. Unexpectedly, Chang Yuan began to search the world frantically for another disciple. It is said that not long after Mo Yu woke up, that other disciple fell from the ten-thousand-foot-high Xuexiao Mountain, his soul was scattered, and his body was gone.

Main story completed, but no side story. (MTL)

I very much enjoyed this story, so I gave it a 4 star. Although, there are a lot of things I can complain about. It's a long story with a lot of plot. With so many things happening in one story, there is a lot to poke at. Honestly, storytelling wise, I'd give it a 3 star, but I did really enjoy it.

The overall concept is really good and interesting. It's more on the sad side. I cried a lot for Zhao... more>> Zhao (MC).

I wish Zhao Zhao was more ruthless and unhinged, but then I remembered that "ruthless" doesn't mean what I think it means. In the story, there's another ruthless cultivator/daoist. He says that being ruthless means having no emotions or attachments, and being completely unbiased. How that works for each daoist/cultivator would be different. The ruthless daoist/cultivator says that he views everyone and every being as simply a creature of the world (3 worlds technically). Zhao Zhao's ruthlessness does not care for other people and what they do. He can retaliate if people jump in front of him, but if people try to provoke emotions in him, it won't work.

The thing is that Zhao Zhao's ruthlessness may be very similar to affection. The story states that the closest daoist path to ruthless is "affection." So actually, I think Zhao Zhao doesn't care unless he cares. When he cares, he has a lot of sh*t to say or not say (in case of not knowing what to say).

Plot wise, I have a lot of issues. The timeframe is a bit confusing to me. I think there might've been a time distortion. Otherwise, I don't understand how it would make sense. In the end, the part that confused me was referenced again. It made me more confused, because Chang Yuan (ML) said that it happened when Zhao Zhao was a kid. The confusion is that I don't think the ages are correct then. Mo Yu (the fake white moonlight) had to be a kid for Chang Yuan to take an interest in. But Mo Yu is, I think, about a 1000 years old (he was alive during the demon/immortal war, I believe) and the Zhao Zhao is like 600-700.

I don't think the author had this timeframe thought out yet. It's just so confusing for me. Not to mention, Chang Yuan is like 8000 years old (which, I guess, doesn't mean anything for immortals).

The villain story part is also not very good. It's very choppy and doesn't come together well enough. It's also a lot of monologuing of telling and not showing. The villains are not interesting and seem very generic. But they continue to exist because they need that plot tension. The ending of the villains is also not a memorable scene. Basically, I feel like the emotions/tensions for the villains did not fluctuate. It's a very straight line of this, this, and that. Done.

The things the villains do are good. I look at it and I'm like, that's... a villain. But the personalities and how it's revealed are not great. It really runs like a cannon fodder villain. Like... why are you jumping and acting like a clown? They are villains!

Let's talk about the relationship. I adore it, but I have issues.

Towards the end, Chaung Yuan is always sorry to Zhao Zhao. Which, I understand, because that'd be me too. I just hate how the story kind of ends with Zhao Zhao never getting over the time when he was a disciple. And there's a very strict line between Chaung Yuan and the man in the portrait.

Man in the portrait:

Spoiler

Obviously, that man is Chang Yuan or Wu Qiuyu. I don't understand how Zhao Zhao can't continue to love Chang Yuan as Wu Qiuyu. When Wu Qiuyu died, he had said/lied that he'll reincarnate and then come back to him. We, the readers, know that he actually died. But in theory, if Wu Qiuyu actually reincarnates, it would be him, but different. It was always going to be a different version of Wu Qiuyu that came back to Zhao Zhao. Chang Yuan is simply that other version of Wu Qiuyu. And in fact, it's better because he is Wu Qiuyu and all his emotions and memories.

So I don't really get how a sound adult could still not accept it. He was a child, and when we're children, there are things we don't fully understand. Kids are incapable of seeing the whole picture. So my point is that, as much as he loved Wu Qiuyu, he did not understand everything about Wu Qiuyu and what he dealt with. Part of that is that Wu Qiuyu was alone with no memories because he was simply a part of Chang Yuan. Loving Wu Qiuyu means loving Chang Yuan.

Again, it's the author's choice to make Zhao Zhao unreasonable. It's not a choice I like. There's a difference between being ruthless (when he's being mean to Chang Yuan) and unreasonable. Because, even towards the end, Chang Yuan bows to Wu Qiuyu's statue and states that he can never touch or become that Wu Qiuyu in Zhao Zhao's heart. It's irritating, because it's literally him.

[collapse]

Disciple days:

Spoiler

Chang Yuan was mean or rather indifferent to Zhao Zhao when he was a disciple. The thing that irritates me about when Zhao Zhao complains about that time is that Chaung Yuan was not his full self. It's stated, multiple times throughout the story, that Chang Yuan was born with a sword heart. But because of Wu Qiuyu, we know that Chang Yuan's primordial spirit was split. All the lofty emotions that he doesn't have (which makes him a perfect God of War), Wu Qiuyu had instead.

The way I understand it is that Chang Yuan was basically incapable of those kinds of emotions. I don't know if it's like he just can't have it or like it couldn't be cultivated normally. But either way, all the emotions/desires Wu Qiuyu had was embedded into Chang Yuan. This is why he saw Zhao Zhao at the pool of regrets. And Chang Yuan didn't understand why. His sword heart was just moved.

So I don't understand why Zhao Zhao doesn't realize that Chang Yuan was incapable of good feelings. And despite that, Chang Yuan is always bothered by him. As a reader, I feel distress for Chang Yuan. I would f*cking want to kill myself if the person I loved and treasured was hurt by me because I couldn't remember. Or because I just couldn't feel. Like Zhao Zhao wasn't just hurt during that time. He literally killed himself, jumping off the cliff. When Chang Yuan got Wu Qiuyu's memories back... sad.

So again, I do not know why Zhao Zhao always talks sh*t and ignores the time he was a disciple. Zhao Zhao's character should care and be in distress over it because he loves and obsesses over his master. But there is no realization of this. And as stated in the previous spoiler, he differentiates Wu Qiuyu and Chang Yuan as two different people knowing they are the same person.

Another bad writing choice in my opinion. The ending makes Zhao Zhao feel like a petulant child. Chang Yuan needs to give Zhao Zhao everything.

[collapse]

Side note:

Spoiler

I really wish that Chang Yuan realized it himself that his primordial spirit was broken. Then him looking for it himself would have been better. The villain telling him and then giving his memories back right there was a little, as stated above, not good villain storytelling. I also wish that Chang Yuan had got it right before Zhao Zhao lost his memories so that the two stories would be parallel with each other.

[collapse]

There's a lot of choices the author makes that seem questionable from just the plotline and character characterization.

Family:

Spoiler

I actually really hated that the family did everything with Zhao Zhao after he lost his memories. It made me upset because it was like they loved Zhao Zhao, their baby, but not Zhao Zhao, our main character. And like, they completely erased all his relationships with others from before. Even if being with Chang Yuan may seem iffy, Si Nan was his older brother. Zhao Zhao did love him and give him a lot of medicine. Also, Lingshu, (I thought the author forgot about him, but he came back briefly later) who took care of his naughty ass and guarded his tomb.

Like yea, his life s**ked before. But there were people who still loved him. Like who the f*ck is this family? They just want him to be happy, so they left his memories out. It's messed up. They let him try to get married, but they didn't give him decision on taking his memories back. Because later, he retrieves it. He didn't understand Chang Yuan, but it felt like he knew him. He goes out in the middle of the night and gets his memories back.

After his memories come back, Zhao Zhao's relationship with his family becomes a bit weird and perfunctory. He knows it himself, he's closer to Si Nan than Huai Bi. So it's weird. They always try to integrate him into their family and noble status, but he's not that. He eventually voices it out and refuses their coaxing words (cuz he's insecure). This plotline wasn't actually finished or resolved.

But the family finally realized that they can't keep treating him like he's a little baby. Which is correct. He's not a little baby. He's a grown person who became immortal in the ruthless path. Like a lot happened from his dumb cute days. No one positively chooses the ruthless path. Zhao Zhao is literally the only one known to have finish the trials.

So yea, the family was a bit much for me. I know it sad, but that's what you got. A sad angry baby.

[collapse]

Peacocks:

Spoiler

That whole engagement thing made me so uncomfortable. Like, Zhao Zhao lost his memories when he turned into a dragon. It hadn't even been a year and there was talk of marriage. Like peacock, sir, that's a f*cking child. He doesn't even know what a marriage is. Why are you manipulating him into marriage. Gaslighting him because you're so good to him so Zhao Zhao can't be mean to you.

Huai Bi, brother, was all like, he doesn't want to limit Zhao Zhao and make Zhao Zhao second guess himself. If he wants to get married then let him. Just slow it down a little and it should be fine.

Like b*tch, you are a f*cking older brother to someone with memory loss and emotions like a child. You are f*cking sending him off to be groomed and sexually ab*sed at that point. Stop being a little bit*h and take some f*cking responsibility.

All his dumbass had to f*cking say was that the peac*ck was mean with this older brother. He's trying to take you away from your family. It's why he's so nice to you but mean to us. He wants Zhao Zhao to be happy, but sometimes people are liars and try to break them apart. Even though, most marriages require parents' approval, this peac*ck was trying to steal him without their parents knowing.

There dumbass.

And turns out that hoe was monster anyways so it's even worse. Huai Bi came out to assist Zhao Zhao like, obviously you're demon. Like b*tch, really please stop.

They get engaged first and Chang Yuan comes right in the end of the engagement ceremony to steal Zhao Zhao away. Zhao Zhao follows him because Chaung Yuan is so pretty. (a hoe ass older brother only thinking about "the best" for his baby brother really was gonna let a child marry because people be "pretty" when people be "pretty" left and right)

This whole thing annoyed me. Because it wasn't logical. The author does the exact same thing with marriage. Zhao Zhao (memory back) needed to get f*cked up with yang energy so his parents gave him a list of marriage prospects. Chang Yuan robs the marriage and, with his identity, continues the marriage ceremony (that the fiancee set up) as the groom (this actually made me laugh).

So in the end, I think the author just wanted an engagement and marriage ceremony for Zhao Zhao and Chang Yuan. It's just that the engagement plotline was so uncomfortable and irritating.

[collapse]

Huai Bi:

Spoiler

I am so uncomfortable with the ambiguous romantic tension between Huai Bi and Mo Yu. Like, I know in theory, they knew each other before Zhao Zhao, but it's stated in the story and the synopsis that they look alike. Like, Huai Bi, this man looks like your baby brother. Please f*cking stop. I haven't seen the side stories, but if it's about them.... I can't.

Really not a good choice.

[collapse]

Chang Yuan and his disciples:

Spoiler

Chang Yuan has not one but 2 disciples besides Zhao Zhao.

Mo Yu is what it is. Chang Yuan saw a boy with a mole on his eyelids at the pool of regrets. He saw Mo Yu again (whose family keeps nagging him to take as a disciple) and decided to take him in because of the mole. Everyone around him say that he loves Mo Yu and tries everything to save him.

Chang Yuan does not care about Mo Yu. I wish this was something realized and spread out into the 3 worlds. Obviously Chang Yuan was looking for Zhao Zhao, but didn't know who and where he was.

Chang Yuan's relationship with all his disciples were hard to analyze. But I finally realized that he does not give out any f*cks. No positive or negative f*cks were given to anyone but Zhao Zhao (again! why doesn't Zhao Zhao realize that was relish in it?).

Mo Yu was a standard and good disciple. He had talent and whatever. Chang Yuan felt guilty that his soul was scattered because of him. So he saved him for his own conscience. Mo Yu is saved, good. Whatever.

Liu Fuying was a horrible person and bad talents and virtues. He was recognized as a disciple for saving Mo Yu. Chang Yuan feeds and clothes him. Good. Whatever.

Everything Zhao Zhao does, Chang Yuan always second guesses it. Why? Cuz if he was a normal person, his ass would've died by Zhao Zhao (lol, it's so funny when Zhao Zhao found out later). But he eats everything Zhao Zhao gives him. Let Zhao Zhao hug him and sleep with him.

So the final analyses is that he didn't care. If anyone ends up as his disciple then they are his disciples. Food, clothes, and some moral guidance. Done. He's not good to any of them. He's just not interested in them. Unless you're Zhao Zhao.

He had to make sure this coquettish goblin didn't go out and kill others.

[collapse]

Chang Yuan and recognizing his disciples:

Spoiler

Mo Yu. Everybody knows why he's there. But I don't know why Chang Yuan still thought he was the boy in the pool of regrets. Or maybe he knew Mo Yu wasn't the boy and left it at that? Didn't care enough.

Liu Fuying. I don't understand why Chang Yuan accepted him as a disciple. Even if Liu Fuying's scheming ass helped Mo Yu, he doesn't need to be a disciple just cuz he asked. All disciples go through assessments and then are accepted by whoever wants them. Chang Yuan should've gave him the chance to be assessed since Liu Fuying couldn't come before.

Maybe he just didn't want to deal with it and accepted him. But this took a long time for me to question until I realized he didn't care.

Also, I can't get over it. 8000 years old and a War Hero. Never questioned the hoe who killed 20 of his peers, stealing their cultivation. A hoe who was a demon. Like my guy, who are you? Are you OP or not?

Zhao Zhao. It was a no for Chang Yuan because he was almost mu*dered by him. Low moral assessment. But when Zhao Zhao cried and grabbed on to him, calling him "master, " it probably triggered the memory from the pool of regrets. So he accepted him.

AGAIN! Zhao Zhao! Please realize that this man had no emotions, but you moved him! Stop shaming my man. He's sorry for you.

[collapse]

Sidenote for this section:

Spoiler

I really dislike how when Zhao Zhao lost his memories, he became really childlike. And he was also an extreme face con. Looking at people and giving flowers to beautiful people. It's okay. I don't mind it in general, but in context of Zhao Zhao it was a little weird. Zhao Zhao was known to be mischievous and a bit of a bully as a child. He'd do good deeds too, like give food away. So like, I just didn't really connect this memoryless Zhao Zhao with our Zhao Zhao.

Also, before he hatched, he was known to constantly roll towards Chang Yuan. He would sneak and follow him during the war. There was even a joke from the dad saying that Chang Yuan could take him as a child bride. And obviously, coherent Zhao Zhao loves his master. So, I also think it was a little weird that memoryless Zhao Zhao could give up Chang Yuan.

The family said that even though the memories aren't there, the feelings were deeply woven into him. So that's why he can be a little dodgy and insecure. But then why the f*ck doesn't he like Chang Yuan?

I don't appreciate this little arc. It just doesn't feel like Zhao Zhao. Again, it's why I felt that the family was a little insincere and didn't really seem to love Zhao Zhao.

[collapse]

I think the best part of the story is how sad it is. Zhao Zhao's life experience sucks. He has nothing and lives for nothing. It's a long life to have nothing. Humans only live at most to 100. This baby has lived lifetimes of emptiness.

Cliff:

Spoiler

The buildup to this scene was sad. Even before the scene. He always holds the scale and tells himself that his master, Wu Qiuyu will come back and love him. He tells himself not to covet Chang Yuan and fight his disciple brothers. He has his own master. Then realizing that his master was never going to come back, he broke. 300 years he had that scale. In those 300 years, he developed no permanent and positive relationship. He had nothing and then broke.

I cried a lot during the time when he was stuck in his fantasy. He was slowly dying. And then in the moment of clarity, he apologized to Chang Yuan for everything and jumped off a cliff.

[collapse]

The tension and his love for the man in the portrait are so good and sad.

The truth:

Spoiler

As stated way above, Chang Yuan never seemed to care about Mo Yu. So he never used Zhao Zhao as a substitute. But when he finds out that he was a substitute for Wu Qiuyu... damn. That scene was so good. They fought and then, in the end, Chang Yuan let Zhao Zhao stab his chest.

Chang Yuan deserved it. Because at this point, this man let an insecure child defend themselves into su*cide. It's just that afterward, it was a bit much for me. I felt bad for Chang Yuan. My man's fumbling with how to feel. He can't do much.

[collapse]

Sidenote that could've solved all the problems:

Spoiler

Zhao Zhao is too insecure which makes him very impulsive and hasty. He also keeps to himself. Understandable considering how he grew up.

But like, Wu Qiuyu should've told him to stay in the village. The man had some extra breath to be talking about reincarnation but didn't tell the child that he had arranged for someone to take care of him. I know he didn't want to say it before everything bcuz it'll make Zhao Zhao anxious. No one likes talking about deaths and wills. But the man was dying. He had a few extra breaths to say something.

But either way, Zhao Zhao should've stayed. It was his dad that was supposed to come take him. If he had stayed, he would've gone home and grew up with his family. Chang Yuan would've come around and met him. This is apparently the same time he went to the pool of regrets, so if Chang Yuan saw him, he would've accepted him as a disciple or come around more often.

Zhao Zhao would believe he was a reincarnation and everything. He was young, more open, and Chang Yuan had yet to accept a disciple. It also might've triggered Chang Yuan to question if his primordial spirit had split. The timeline is too close. A child knows him and he saw the same child in the pool of regrets. A child, that would normally not know who he is. That's suspicious.

Anyways, would've been done and happy. The story would've been a fluffy child bride love story.

Now that I think about it... I think Zhao Zhao is actually only 500 years old. Chang Yuan really stepping on boundaries. Either way, when Zhao Zhao was a disciple, if he had asked for help at any point, Chang Yuan would've helped him. It also would've triggered him to change how he sees Zhao Zhao. This part could've also saved them a lot of trouble.

[collapse]

In conclusion, it's a normal story with decent storytelling for a very good story concept. Despite it may be (or maybe not. maybe someone asked them to write this story) the author's own concept, I believe the writing failed the story. But the characters and concept are still good, and the writing is decent enough. It's just that with a lot of plot and only this level of writing, I could not give a 5 star. Sometimes, less is more. This story needed a bit of that. <<less

I really liked the story.

I do have to mention that if you felt bad for Chang Yuan around chapter 70 and 80, that's fine. I did too but if you felt Zhao Zhao was wrong for what he did, I would be a bit confused if that's so. I do feel bad for Chang Yuan but at the same time it was satisfying because since the beginning, we know he only accepted Zhao Zhao as his disciple because he resembled Mo Yu. It was really kind of on a whim... more>> that he took him in. His inner thoughts constantly revealed he was kind of disgusted with Zhao Zhao's character. This changes later of course but this is how it was in the beginning.

Ch70-80, this part of the story was really dog blooded but I felt it fit because Chang Yuan had constantly not been a very good Shizun. He took Zhao Zhao's behavior toward him for granted and went as far as to kick him out of the XueXiao palace without asking why Zhao Zhao sold the things he gifted him. Yes, Chang Yuan had never gifted any of his disciples anything from his treasury which implies he really values Zhao Zhao now and didn't see him as a replacement but it doesn't change the fact that he refused to see Zhao Zhao even as he begged and kneeled outside in the cold for hours and didn't visit when Zhao Zhao was sick in bed until after it was revealed his soul was scattering and he was dying.

Zhao Zhao had constantly tricked Chang Yuan with things like this so it was understandable that Chang Yuan thought he was lying. Later, Chang Yuan admits he wanted Zhao Zhao to keep coming up with these scheming little lies to try and get Chang Yuan's attention because he looked forward to it. Chang Yuan wasn't a bad Shizun but he was ignorant as he had never felt this way towards anyone. It's clear he really cared about Zhao Zhao later on but he did not handle it correctly.

Keep in mind that Zhao Zhao did not reincarnate or transmigrate like in other novels. He truly was a child who was still maturing and had gone through all this suffering on his own. He never had a home and didn't belong anywhere, not even with his own people, the Bashe tribe, who ab*sed him when he desperately tried to go back and seek shelter there. Later, we learn they ask him for money throughout his life, leeching off of him by blackmailing him. He was an imposter at the Qilin palace and didn't truly belong despite the Qilin King and Queen raising him for so many years. I don't understand how they were able to disregard him so easily even if they found out he wasn't their biological son.

They weren't unkind but they clearly no longer saw him as a son which is just baffling to me. How can you raise someone with as much love and care as they did to Zhao Zhao and so easily throw away those feelings of love? He was their son in every way except blood relation. It's mentioned by Zhao Zhao that the Qilin Queen is kind and treats him well but I'd say that's not quite right. For example, when she visited the East China Sea to see Xue Ji, she called Zhao Zhao pitiful but when the other Queen, Lady Shuijun spoke bad about him, she did not say a word. Only Xue Jin did, despite not knowing Zhao Zhao at all. Lady Shuijun went on a good three minute rant, but the Qilin Queen stayed silent and did nothing. I don't think she's evil but her kindness is clearly not so pure. It's like a flimsy piece of plastic. She's kind only because she can afford to so she uses this kindness thoughtlessly if it's not troublesome.

Later I find that the Qilin Queen was crueler than I had thought. She had grown resentment towards Zhao Zhao because of what her biological son, Si Nan, had to go through and even wished he had died when he got left behind in the demon cave. She admits that it's a lie if she said she didn't know the hardships he was going through in the Qilin palace when Si Nan wasn't there to shield Zhao Zhao unknowingly. People wouldn't bother Zhao Zhao as long as Si Nan was there but once he was gone, to them it was free game.

As for the Qilin King, it's revealed that the Qilin Queen wanted to drive away Zhao Zhao but he convinced her not to. His care for Zhao Zhao is implied through a memory of Zhao Zhao where he's spying on the Qilin Queen and Si Nan happily bonding together. The Qilin King runs into him and invites him over with a smile but Zhao Zhao runs away because he felt his hidden desires were revealed.

All he had wanted was someone to love him dearly.

I'd say the Qilin King did care for Zhao Zhao but if he had still seen him as his son, there's no way Zhao Zhao would have suffered the way he did. Maybe he truly was ignorant about the suffering Zhao Zhao was going through in their home but he didn't care quite enough to really find out how he was truly doing.

The type of people the Qilin parents were was crueler than if it had just been parents who hated Zhao Zhao because at least then we know they would've driven Zhao Zhao away immediately. Although they sheltered Zhao Zhao and let him stay, it was also his cage. He was grateful to them and it made my heart ache knowing how hard he tried to please then so there never came a day he would be kicked out. That was not his home because he was walking on eggshells everyday and he knew this. So, he put everything on the line to be accepted as a disciple even if it was a lowly immortal and even if he had to resort to tricks and lies because he was tired of living under someone else's roof.

Even though the real son was found, Zhao Zhao did not dislike Si Nan and in fact did feel protective of him. Even though Si Nan was clearly ignorant of how Zhao Zhao was struggling. Zhao Zhao did hold envy because Si Nan had a family and love he could never have but he'd never harm him or hope ill will on him.

He found the best way to survive was to act. I didn't find it disgusting or two-faced. He was dealt cards like we all are in life and he used them as best he could to strive for a better life.

The immortals were the true disgusting ones. Especially Lord Bishua who said she didn't like people like Zhao Zhao who came from lowly backgrounds and try "underhanded" ways to climb the latter. In other words, she hated poor people who tried their hardest to get a good life that is so easily given to people like Lord Bishua on a silver plater.

I truly admired Zhao Zhao's determination. He constantly strived for a better life even if that meant putting on a mask and acting in a way he thinks would get other people to treat him well. He was always scheming and he was cruel but he was all alone and he did what he thought he had to do.

I admire him because I know I would've never been able to do it. Because he was a demon, they looked down on him and constantly tried to blame him for doing evil things he didn't do. Doing so even after he risked his life and saved a ton of their disciples. He wasn't any worse than the immortals that called themselves righteous. I like that although he was constantly shamed for being a demon (which causes him to dislike his natural form), he does not despise demons or hate them. He views them as beings as any other.

There was something I was a bit disappointed with. There were almost no positive female characters at all. The only one was Xue Ji but
Spoiler

she was Zhao Zhao's mother.

[collapse]
Unless tied to maternal instinct and love or just side characters without much impact on the story, none of the female characters had any semblance of good traits or deep background stories. It wasn't surprising but it was disheartening to see.

Overall, I really liked the story. It was hard the first 60 chapters or so because that's mostly Zhao Zhao's childhood arc and him experiencing hardships and growth. Although Chang Yuan was hard to like in the beginning, he makes up for it later on in the story. He truly loves Zhao Zhao and is just as possessive as Zhao Zhao is to him. But he would never hurt him in order to keep him by his side and vice versa.

I loved the ending and extras! <<less

Dropped.

It was a really good read on the early stages but I felt like it got too dragged. Plot is good but not well planned.

There were also certain inconsistencies such as the author mentioning that immortals can survive without eating but then there was a part where ... more>>
Spoiler

MC cooked noodles to please ML and ML got "hungry" so he ate it

[collapse]
and a whole lot more that are really questionable.

I struggled a lot with the cultivation levels which wasn't really explained by the author (but explained by the translator, thank you very much) and the time frame wasn't really clear despite some flashbacks.

I felt like I read a whole different story when MC discovered his real identity. Everyone became OOC especially the MC. He was a cunning and a smart child doing everything he can to survive
Spoiler

but then when he discovered his real identity and his memories were sealed for the second time, he became a s*upid face con and got engaged, almost got married to a random peacock, after "dual cultivating" with ML. Although I think it's so that he can enjoy his childhood again but it became too much for me to bear.

[collapse]

The author's writing honestly made me hate MC towards the end. At first I really liked his character despite his shortcomings but towards the later parts... He just seemed like a s*upid child for me, and I'm sorry but I couldn't tolerate his attitude.

Some of the side characters were also forgotten and discarded after being "used" for the plot progression. I feel like some of them weren't justified well.

I felt like this story lost its potential due to the redundancy of the plot. I was so excited reading this but then it just got too boring for me, skipping some parts, and then finally just dropping it to avoid wasting time. <<less

Honestly, I have so much to say that I don't even know where to start. The entire time I was reading, I felt like I was abusing myself. There are so many characters I absolutely despise.

Starting with the Qilin parents, just because the son you were raising turned out not to be your biological child, how could you completely disregard him after loving and caring for him all those years? You practically raised him. It's unbelievably cruel and heartless to suddenly shift from love to resentment towards a child who... more>> considered you his family.

Then there's the steward of the Si Nan. This guy is hands down the pettiest hater I've ever come across. If he were stranded in a desert and I had the last bottle of water, I'd pour it into the sand infront of his face.

As for Lord Bihua, seriously, how are you a god with such an ugly demeanor? Why do poor, hardworking people anger you so much? Can't people from humble backgrounds strive to achieve something? Her attitude infuriated me throughout. Why was someone so narrow-minded and hateful even considered a god, let alone qualified to teach and accept disciples?

At some point, I felt like I brought this upon myself by deciding to read this novel despite seeing the word "substitute" in the title. I knew it was going full of dogblood, but experiencing everything the MC goes through was truly devastating. Sometimes, I wonder if MC ab*se is some sort of trend or f3tish, given how often I've come across it, whether in novels, manhua, or manhwas. (I dont know how to post review without stars, imma just leave it at 4. Since its just a personal rant, I don't wanna ruin it for others who are into it.🤷🏻‍♀️) <<less

The story of this novel gets better as u read til the climax!

I felt disappointed at first due to heartlessness of MC. I thought that his adoptive treated him kindly yet he is crooked. But that is not case he experienced disappointment, abandonment several times, physical pain, near death scenario, bullying, his scales were pulled out (scales that contained his aura) etc

He was lazy, spoiled and kind child originally but due to conspiracies he experienced great pain without anyone to rely on so he can only please and harden his... more>> heart and scheme just to have a place to live.

I think, the author should change the title since the title has a lil rel'p with the plot.

Spoiler

the reason why the ruthless path didnt backfire bc the MC also received the sword cultivation fr ML.

Thought that he is really crooked but he is not. In his everyday life, he is maltreated/abandoned due to his bloodline, working to his limit just to have a place/to be cherished/to improve his cultivation etc while he sees others getting his hard earned dream easily. Yet he chooses to ignore and not brood on jealousy but to keep working

This is a must read! It won't bore you like some of these novels with drawn out plots or fast paced romance. Everything was at the right time. Even the characters, their complexity is astonishing and rare among these 'shuang' novels. Sure, there are still some characters that might seem 1D but I'd say that's just how people are. The romance was just right if you aren't reading it as just a quick flick/just for the romance.

Spoiler

I really like Liu Wenkang and Ye Ming. I really like Liu Wenkang's gentleness and how he's there for Zhao Zhao at the right times. I think there are still some mysteries about him that will probably be answered later or I'm just thinking too much into it.

And Ye Ming. Zhao Zhao dislikes him because he was born with things he could only wish for, like a family. He's quite cold to him but Ye Ming hasn't changed his attitude and don't know if it's because he knows about the yuandan thing and feels guilty or is a hypocrite. We don't really get an insight in Ye Ming at all, most likely so the ch 97 special isn't found out earlier. With how Huaibei treated him after he transformed back to human, I think he might've been in the know about the plan. So, if I'm right I'm hoping for a friendship developing with Zhao Zhao.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Don't read this. I'm embarassed. It's just a small vent so. (Why am I writing out Zhao Zhao's nickname everytime even though it's so long? I like him. I like his character. I like his development, I like who he was at the start of the story, I like who he is now as well. Growing up I never saw any MC's with such negative emotions like jealousy, pettiness and vainness, even though they're emotions as common as the stars and there is not a single person or might I say animal thats has never experienced these emotions more multiple times. It was always villainized and never explored properly. As a kid, I would always feel like I was strange, out of place and definitely an alien. This novel has scratched the itch for that feeling of being understood/understanding. Others might not feel like this novel isn't that deep or didn't make them feel the same way. That's because we're different people with different lifes and experiences. This was a mini vent but I just wanted it out there, for me and for those who feel a similar way.

After reading the synopsis, I could immediately guess the entire plot of this story... and yeah, all my guess was right.

To be honest, it would be better if the author wasn't written the synopsis too clearly

This is all because the story itself has a lot of back and forth plots which can make the story become boring if you already guess everything from the start.

Btw, this story also kept getting dragged as it neared the end, and this really annoyed me... It's all because the author kept delaying it with... more>> a lot little things that weren't really important.

Apart from that, there is also a very pronounced bias towards the characters in the story. Take for example MC apprentice
Spoiler

I mean yeah, I know he's actually pure evil + he's not a real host of the body he is living

[collapse]
But still, how ML and his first student treated him was truly beyond reason.

Spoiler

An example is when he wanted to help hide the fact that ML was dying, which unfortunately failed... and this things made ML first student immediately hit him and threaten him in front of all people for no reason, and none of them speak up of defended him, even though it's a fact that he was also trying to keep the secret with other ML subordinates.

[collapse]

There is also MC loyal servant named Liang Shu, who was abandoned by MC after he recovered his memory and returned to his original family.

Spoiler

Despite he had helped MC from the beginning when everything was difficult, it's looks like MC just forgot about him and choose a random new followers.

[collapse]

Lastly, this novel is full of amnesia and flashback tropes... if you don't like it, then I don't recommend reading it. <<less

Sigh, how satisfying.

I wish I could forget everything and reread this.

Reading about Zhao Zhao was both painful and fulfilling. His unfiltered feelings were relatable and his growth was beautiful to watch.

Love, and care, these two are unfathomable. They could either build you up or destroy you, and our main characters learned it the hard way.

Beautiful, painful, and satisfying.

I'm crying aaaaa 😭 😭 😭

I couldn't help but binge all the translated chapters available in a day and it did NOT disappoint.

Our main character is very true to himself, and has a clear obsession. The male lead at this point hasn't really grown into a romantic interest, and it seems like the next arc is where the romance will start. Right now the feelings come from other main points such as family, friends, and life's struggle. You can't help but root for the main character because he's been through... more>> so much!!

Despite the theme being that way, it's done very lightly so you don't feel like you're swallowing angst because it's sandwiched in humor and shenanigans. There are plenty of misunderstandings as well but they get unraveled satisfyingly as the story progresses. Overall a 9.5/10 for this arc, just a little point deduction for the prolonged misunderstanding.

So far one main arc has been completed, and we still have 100-ish chapters to go. I look forward to our MC's development in the future 🙏🙏 <<less

Story summary: the MC (Zhoa Zhoa) is basically adopted because his birth family switched him with the real son of the Qulin family. They found out and decided to keep him anyway. We meet the character a day or two before he travels with his brother Sin Nan (the actual son of the Qulin family) to go to the Fourteen States to receive a master. He's there trying to become the discipline of the Chang Yuan... more>>
Spoiler

(the ML).

[collapse]

From there the story follows his journey as a discipline of Chang Yuan but after he "leaves" the story takes on a different feel to it.

Spoiler

We get to see our MC being a bit OP which I loved but then he finds out that the master that he spent his whole life living for was framed/killed and decides to revenge him. The story takes a turn when he finds his real family and he loses all of his memories. He changes into a completely different character that I didn't like very much, but it wasn't his fault. His family knew how to give him his memories back but choose to not help him get them back because they feel that he went through a lot and just want him to be happy. But in my opinion that wasn't their decision to make. He had a life outside of them and things he needed to get done, but keeping his memories they deprived him of the chance to grow as a person. Also they don't educate him on some important terminology that almost gets him in a lot of trouble.

From there he gets his memories back and the story gets a bit.... boring. There was a villain story that got added in that after finishing the whole story felt unnecessary. The villain would do something evil they would stop them and they would keep getting away. This happened everytime the villain appeared until they finally killed him. But it didn't feel fulfilling because the MC and ML are so OP, it didn't make sense that they would continuously let their weakened enemy keep escaping them over and over again.

[collapse]

Although I had some gripes about the story I still think it was pretty good. The translator did a good job as well and I appreciate the time the took into translating this for us. Thank you.

So if you're looking for an OP couple with a slowwwww burn romance with a bit of mu*der/angst give this a read. <<less

Finished reading the main story. I have to say that I am a big sucker for masterxdisciple tropes so this really satisfies me. Beware there is quite a lot of miscommunication, so at times it might be frustrating but the overall story was nice. I liked the emotional touches of this story and from Zhao's perspective. It made me feel for ZZ after all he has gone through.

I think it is a solid story, although the pace can be a little too fast at some point. But still would recommend... more>> it, especially those who like this type of MxD tropes. Thats all. I am still at chapter 71 but I feel like I need to make a reveiw for such a rare find gem.

You might have some opinions about MC in first few chapters but which it made him more humane in this way as it is hard to be a prefct someone after what he've been through at young age.

Look... objectively speaking, this novel had its flaws. BUT it was entertaining as hell.

Entertaining in the way that I would grip my phone, internally screaming, “HE’S THE REAL DRAGON PRINCE” while also knowing that the characters aren’t as OP as me & won’t know the truth until a dramatic reveal once the climax hits like an earthquake.

This had a lot of potential & it hits so many cliches I like. But on a pacing note, I think it should’ve been paced better. The character development, romance, & plot building felt... more>> like it was arbitrarily pieced together. I knoooow it deserves better! It had everything—family drama, rags to riches, masterXdisciple, yearning, an MC who plots & isn’t a total Gary Stu... ALL THE PIECES. But yeah it played out mid.

Still good, still worth reading. I just won’t praise it as high as I’d like. <<less

Wow! Really good story and very good translation. A page turner that kept me hooked.

I read many translated novels here on Novel Updates. The quality of writing and the quality of the translations vary. This is one of the really good ones.

Zhao Zhao is such a wonderful character, a survivor despite what happens to him, and such a likable guy. Just love how vindictive he can be - all to those who deserve it!

His shifu could do with a bit more fleshing out to be in balance with the depths... more>> of ZZ, but he does grow as the story progresses.

There's no smut. It's more about the emotional journey between them, and the extensive story of ZZ, the events that shape him, discovering his true background and coming full circle. So many twists and turns, tears and laughter.

Read it. It's good. 😀 <<less

This novel takes you on an unforgettable journey, starting with a seemingly heartless main character, Zhao Zhao, whose painful backstory unfolds as you read. From abandonment and betrayal to unimaginable hardships, his transformation from a kind, naive child into a cunning survivor is both heartbreaking and inspiring.

Despite its heavy themes, the story is balanced with humor and satisfying resolutions to misunderstandings. The focus on family, friendship, and personal struggle adds depth, while hints of romance promise more to come. Zhao Zhao’s raw emotions and growth make him incredibly relatable, and... more>> you can’t help but root for him through it all.

There's to the plot than expected. I read this a while back and didn't write a review since the plot wasn't so simple. But I put it off for too long and I forget the smaller details so will give the big spoilers instead in the spoilers section.

Overall, I liked the story. MC, Zhao Zhao, is a bit black hearted but you'll find the reasons why if you persist in reading further. It made me sad for MC and was especially happy when MC got his happy ending.

Spoiler

At the beginning of the novel, MC was traveling to attend a sect selection with his brother. They happened to encounter ML, Chang Yuan, who was disguised and injured. MC thought ML was a nobody so didn't treat him well. He even threw ML out to die in an attempt to save himself.

ML was okay but now knew that MC was not as kind and innocent as his outer appearance. Later, MC does become ML's apprentice but their relationship was pretty superficial. Lots of stuffs happen that I'm not gonna rehash so to summarize, ML comes to love MC and pursue him.

SPOILERS...

...

MC is actually of a divine bloodline. When he was still in his eggshell, he was stolen and his dragon Yuandan was removed and replaced with a demon's. Some things happened and he ended up being raised by his "parents".

MC had one goal, it was to reunite with his master. The master he had when he was young. His master said he had to leave to do something and would see MC again years later. The date for their meeting had passed so MC wanted to get strong super quick to go find his master.

BIG SPOILER...

...

It turned out that ML was MC's missing master. Years ago, ML had split off a portion of his soul to chase after a demon. This soul lost its memories but still knew to track down and kill the demon. The soul met MC and took pity on him. He took on MC as his disciple and cared for him. However, the soul was injured/contaminated by the demon and had to die so it wouldn't hurt people.

When the soul returned to ML, ML had a vision of MC. ML had forgot about splitting off his soul and was unaware that this vision was the soul's memory. Later ML saw Mo Yu and the mole similar to MC's, so ML took him as his disciple. So Mo Yu was a substitute for MC without anyone's knowledge... even ML. 😂

This is a really great binge worthy novel. It has the elements that I was looking fot

  • Slow-phased
  • Light hearted Romance
  • Face slapping (MC'S sad childhood)
  • XIANXIA🗡️ (I am sucker for this genre)
The only thing to note of, is that the story tends to get draggy as the chapters go by.

It has this element of 'You forget me I forget you' trope 😅 specially towards the end of the novel.

I'm rating this novel 3, 5 stars, rounded up to 4 for the sake of the rating system.

What I liked about the novel was how the MC started out as a character who had a hard time trusting others due to his tragic backstory and was manipulative and cunning because of it, which I liked. I generally enjoyed reading it for the most part (and the very nice translation helped with that a lot).

What I disliked was the development in the last ~third of the novel.
Spoiler

The whole amnesia plot was incredibly annoying to get through, mainly because the MC turned into an insufferable brat, which made me dislike him quite a bit, something that didn't go away again after the amnesia was lifted. For me, that whole part completely soured the MC for me.

[collapse]

In general, I wasn't much of a fan of the main pairing. I liked the ML as a character but the romantic feelings never really seemed very believable to me. I'm not someone who has an issue with master/disciple pairings but
Spoiler

(especially considering the much more fatherly bond the MC seemed to have had with his "former master")

[collapse]
the development going from indifference to reluctant affection to love was not very well executed. In the end, I found myself much more invested in the sidepairing, but it was only teased. I would absolutely read a novel about those two.

I generally did like quite a few side characters, and I thought some of them were sidelined unfairly (like the MC's servant). And what was the deal with Liu Wenkang? I liked him, but the writing made it seem like he had some past with the MC and ML - maybe I missed it but it felt like this was a sideplot that the author accidentally dropped?

The plot itself was fairly standard fare, but there were quite a few plotholes. One example that bothered me a lot
Spoiler

was how both Zhao Zhao AND Mo Yu saw those demonic blood circles in various places but apparently promptly forgot about them because they never mentioned it to anyone.

[collapse]
And the whole "switched at birth" thing was seriously overused.

All in all, I realise that it sounds like I have a lot of gripes with this novel. I did ultimately enjoy reading it, or at least 2/3rds of it. I liked a lot of characters, but wasn't too thrilled with some character developments, some plot points and underwhelmed by the main romance.

If you are looking for a good adventure novel, You will like it. If you want to read a romance novel... not so much.

The novel concentrated on the live experience of MC, the ups and downs of a young child that desperately looks for areal home without discrimination.

The novel starts when MC is already eccentric. He went through a lot of betrayal and backstabbing. His character is somewhat egoistic but not in a mean way... well, only that one time he threw someone out as bait.

His character is going... more>> through a lot of changes, mostly due to amnesia.... in two different instances. To be honest I hate the amnesia trope in novels and so do I in this case. MC had 2amnesia cases and ML 1. Oh and for some reasons, the writer sent MC two times to get married... and so our ML had to steal the bride two times. The drama was a bit much. Most of it could be solved if they actually communicated, but that really never happens. Even after ML realized that he needs to speak up.... there he goes again without telling MC anything.

The misunderstandings became a bit annoying.

The backdrop of this world is not bad but has some holes. At the beginning the time-line seems messed up but makes sense later on.

If you want a spoiler about which arcs there are and what they contain, here you go:

Spoiler

1 - Aprentice / reaching the school and tryingto become an Aprentice.

Jade Carving - getting a Shifu

Ruthless - choosing and encroaching on the ruthless path. MC dies and ML regrets a lot.

63 - Rising High / 100 years later. MC in amnesiac and ruthless mode.

88 - Dragon Roar / MC sneaks into Dragon Clan to find out about his old shifu. Finds his Dragon heritage instead, including another round of amnesia.

104 - wuwang sea / meeting and almost marrying a Peacock.

114 - Guanyin village / ML gets his memory back. Lots of backstory that should be from the view from ML but somehow is MCs view.

121- return of the soul/ ML sacrifices himself again and finds his soul.

130 - sword of frost / MC finally gets/takes his memory back... and behaves kind of asholey to ML

158 - final volume / another bossfight and another wedding attempt and bride stealing.

[collapse]

So would recommend this novel? Yes, it was entertaining enough. <<less
