His Secret Guard

She was a secret guard, codenamed 37, later named Qingge by Ning Wang.

One day, she narrowly escaped death and was sent out to recover from her injuries. On the way, someone approached her, claiming she resembled the young lady he served. The young lady was suffering from a chronic illness, and he asked her to take her place in the wedding, hiding the truth from the groom for five months. The man offered her a generous sum of silver notes, and Qingge, being greedy, accepted.

But what she never expected was that the fiancée’s groom turned out to be none other than her master, Ning Wang…

Fortunately, no one knew the face of the secret guards, except for Heaven, Earth, and their Pavilion Master. Ning Wang had no idea. Qingge successfully hid her identity and cautiously played the role of a Wangfei.

Ning Wang was extraordinarily handsome but had a violent temper. One day, while investigating a traitor, he harshly interrogated all the secret guards. One of them ended up being punished for a trivial matter, receiving a hundred whip lashes, leaving the ground stained with blood. Ning Wang remained indifferent.

The Emperor arranged a marriage for Ning Wang with the legitimate daughter of the presitigious Xiahou clan of Ganliang. The Wangfei was gentle, charming, and pure in nature. Initially, Ning Wang was indifferent and cautious but eventually fell for her.

After ten months of pregnancy, the Wangfei gave birth to a son. When she returned after a visit to her natal family, Ning Wang gripped her by the throat and coldly demanded, “Where is this prince’s Wangfei?”

Though the woman before him looked alike, she was not her.

It was then that he realized the Wangfei he had shared his life with was a fake, brought in by the Xiahou family with money!

In his fury, Ning Wang unleashed a bloodbath.

Afterward, he searched everywhere for that woman, but despite turning the world upside down, he could not find her.

Three years passed, and Ning Wang’s initial rage and hatred turned into silence and contemplation, eventually giving way to quiet coldness.

Until one day, under the dim light of the waning moon, he gazed at the fallen phoenix tree leaves at his feet, covering the elongated shadow of the secret guard behind him.

In a low voice, he asked, “It’s you, isn’t it?”

Objectively well-written, with a compelling plot and memorable characters—this probably deserves five stars. However, the author aimed to counter the fantastical elements (face masks, lightness ability, bone-shaping) with more realistic human psychology so while it presumably ends happily, it’s not exactly a story I’m excited to reread or revisit.

Don’t be fooled by the initial tone. The novel can be divided into three arcs—each with a different tone and focus.

Spoiler
  • The first part of the book is light and fun, like any historical romance with face-slapping elements. Relationship-wise, the ML is in control and the FL is at a slight disadvantage. Beware, there's... ahem... a lot of spicy scenes here.
  • The second part is such a whiplash. Our OTP separates and everything feels painful and dreary. It depicts all the five stages of grief for the ML. Here, we see too how the FL is rooted firmly in her reality and doesn't dawdle in fantasy. She has full control of their (non) relationship. With such decisiveness, I couldn't predict how they can be together again.
  • The last part is about their reunion, how they try to make their relationship work considering the change in their power dynamics and wraps up the other background events unfolding as well.
[collapse]

The FL initially looks like a fun character but you realize much much later that she’s quite cold and decisive. Not just vengeful but calculative and really cold. I understand why she’s like that and I can objectively applaud the consistency of her characterization BUT that does not make her any more likeable. The story looks like it’s predominantly romance but it’s more about the FL and her journey.

The ML has the biggest character growth arc and he encapsulates the type of ML most romance readers are looking for: powerful and handsome, steadfast to the FL. The five stages of grief he goes through is well-plotted and befitting.

There are several side characters, a bunch of which go through tragedies. One of which was the saddest for me that I considered dropping the book altogether.

TL;DR: This is the FL’s journey and the fluffy first few chapters are not indicative of the whole novel. It's quite special but not my favorite. If adapted right, this might turn into one of those rare, unforgettable drama series. <<less

This story is a bit hard to start because of the heavy mind turning of the cast.

First of all, for a background setting with a 'secret guard', I find the MC and the side characters too emotional. Because of plenty of other novel with cannon fodder secret guards, you would assume them to be a bit equal with death guards. You know, those emotionless humanoid weapons with no opinion at all. So at one point, I just ignore the secret guard settings and just treated them as something like a... more>> killer sect/information guild.

But as the story goes, you'll realize how manipulative the cast are. And being a manipulative character doesn't need to be the stereotype rational kind where they calculate every move. The characters, especially MC, are unreliable narrators. Because they're trying to deceive everyone, they're deceiving themselves first. They all part of the chess game. They have thrown themselves into the board and counted themselves as pieces while competing to be the player. It's actually awesome. Of course there's also a bit aspect of self harm in their ways, which kinda reflects about how their kind of people (secret guards) will use everything to reach their goals.

MC for me was a very flawed character. She's self righteous in the way she's trying to justified her actions. She ticks me off whenever she victimized herself (not that she isn't, but sometimes she sounds hypocritical whenever she complain while adding she's loyal to ML.) and sounds ungrateful.

Of course, as I said, majority of the cast is an unreliable narrators and very manipulative. While MC was indeed very emotional and very flawed at the start that it feels uncharacteristic of secret guards, underneath these are plans and maneuvers. MC and the others have very high EQ in my opinion, so in order to cast baits around, they also gave some real feelings. They showed their true desire from time to time, which is both a handle and a bait.

(While I said majority of characters, it's actually just mostly the secret guards group which is MC, her leader Ye Min, and other guards like Bai Zi, Wan Zhao and Wan Zhong but understand that the story mostly revolved around their organization.)

For me, the one with a big 'victim' target on his forehead is ML ahahaha. No seriously, his secret guards are a bunch of traitors ahahaha. In my opinion, they sacrificed him a lot and these guards deserve the beatings ahaha

Spoiler

Like seriously, MC jumped into the game by marrying him and trying to use him as a knife.

Ye Min, the leader of the guards, is loyal to him but won't allow ML to be different from his ideals. So he prevent ML to learn many truths (about MC) that doesn't involve their grand plans in his opinion.

Bai Zi is a spy!

Wan Zhao is MC's best buddy and won't sold MC so she just watch ML go crazy. She also reports to MC while doing so.

Wan Zhong, I don't know if he knew exactly about MC but dude's loyalty is with Ye Min.

Anyway, none of them will fess up with the ML ahahaha so much for his secret guards XD

[collapse]

ML, of course, is a privilege guy. He was their Lord and his single word can decide their life or death. In the narration of the story, he have a bad temper and doesn't understand the sentiments of poor. Life is going great for him as the most favored son of the emperor and he have a older brother that will carry the heavy burden in their family.

For MC and Ye Min, they have a love and hate relationship with ML. They have gratitude and loyalty towards him but also hate and jealousy. Hate him for looking down at her for being dirty, and jealousy that ML could get whatever he wanted.

For me though, I don't think ML wronged anyone. Yeah he definitely have bloody means if he wants and definitely have a temper. His eyes are indeed high above and he doesn't think much of his servants. But as prince and as a leader, he had done his responsibility. He's a border prince that's station in a desolated frontier and since he was young, he had protected and raised the city to be what it is today, rich and peaceful. He's also fair in a way that he treats everyone the same, only looking at their competence and not any other thing like gender. He have a very high standard though so it's easy to be punished by him.

Maybe it's simply human nature or maybe they have just been in the dark for too long and ML, who was bright and shinning, who was straightforward towards his like and dislike, who have a heroic posture and proud, was simply dazzling for them. They had wanted to taint this high being, seeing him walk to the mud, and take pleasure on his fall. I had to admit that it feels like that in a way, them not telling ML the truth wasn't just out of fear of the consequences of deceiving their master but also out of selfish dark thoughts about their untainted master.

MC hated him in his high horse, Ye Min and Bai Zi are jealous of him so they end up in this delicate situation where they are hiding and covering each other.

Tbh, I don't feel much of 'wife chasing' in this story. Not that it's not heartbreaking, ML was really shattered and is kinda crazy in the head. I don't think it was ever fixed. Maybe because ML, for the most of it, looks like a child throwing a tantrum and MC was the s*umbag one lololol

Props to the Crown Prince though. ML treated him as a tree hole. Poor guy had to listen to his brother while trying to not trigger ML. Everything he says is wrong ahaha. He's trembling while watching ML go crazy and had to coax and clean up after ML. Poor older brother, what a great guy ahahaha.

There's this one guy I hated in the story up until the end and he wasn't even the antagonist.

Spoiler

Xiahou Zhilan

Which is MC's bio half sibling.

He and MC are actually the prince and princess of a tribal country. Their father died and they had to flee.

At first, I had to agree that he's a scholar type of guy born wrongly in a tribal place where they hunt to live.

His only sin was being useless when he have the ability and I kind of understand why MC was disappointed. This is his brother that survived by sacrificing her yet he achieved nothing.

In the past 10yrs+ after the death of the tribal leader, their place have been in constant war. They obviously have a direct male heir but in the end, the nephew of their previous tribal king had to step up and be the new tribal king.

In fact, if he just wanted to live as the young master of a noble family, I don't think it was too much. Yeah, it's disappointing but he's a child that didn't grew up with the privelages of his birth so it's a bit much to demand the responsibility out of him.

But then! But then!

This fvker have the whole inheritance of his tribe!!!

Their tribe have a book that records their unique smelting skills of silvers and also some construction of weapons like the divine crossbow and this guy have it. Worse, it also record their tribe topography and mines!!!!

And this fvker used it as a bargaining price to have his status as the eldest son of a noble family!!

This madafvker, his whole country is in constant war for more than ten years. They have a direct male heir that won't go back and they instead had to look forward to their princess, whose life and death are unknown, just to have a way to convince other tribes to unified. They have silver mines that they can't use because a madafvker hog their inheritance to himself!

Since he use the inheritance of his tribe, he should take on the responsibility of an heir!

Don't give me his dreams of peace, how many died in the chaotic war of his tribesmen and how many poor people where exploited when he was busy smelting 10% fake silvers?

I hate him so much that I hate they were trying to white wash him after he died.

He kept saying he can't face his tribe and his father after losing his sister but isn't he just putting the blame on MC? If he wanted to, there's a lot of way. It's not even that he have to kill, he just have to give his tribe a chance of stability. Like MC did! He's over twenty and he have a cousin that already took on the responsibility to clean up the mess. After so long on the noble family, he have loyal servants and some means in his hands and dirt on the noble family after taking care of the business, I don't believe he have no chance to even secretly send back information to his tribe.

He pitied his adoptive mother and protected her all these years. I don't believe he didn't realize after all these years her secret motive. He just doesn't face it.

He knows he's not clean and he's just pretending!

The most hateful thing is that this guy is smart and was indeed raised as a noble son, no matter how hard it is to live under someone's roof. He can definitely do so many things if he just wanted to. Children in their era started their career early!

I hate him so much up until the end and he's still so hypocritical up until the end.

MC and him are indeed siblings though. They are both ostrich. MC just stood up at critical times so he seems too much of a coward but MC have also been running for the majority of the story lol.

[collapse]

As for the real princess

Spoiler

It's kinda ironic that she's the substitute of her substitute. Well if you get it.

She's also MC's half sister from the mother side so they look really alike.

I kinda don't mind her end. I do agree that ultimately, MC should go to their mother in revenge as she's the one that wronged these three children.

MC and her brother would have more chances of survival if left in their tribe. Their family really have a thin line that every children count.

Anyway, back to her, I don't think MC was specifically trying to get her to pay for their mother's sin.

MC did jump into the trap to try and drag her to the mud and have her family and ML to fight.

But as MC said, they have a contract that each get what they bargain for. She did her role, and she paid. It just nothing to MC that she failed and ML found out. It's her who looked down on ML.

Also, it's her that wanted MC to die and also wanted to target MC's son. That's not part of the contract so she have to face the consequences.

No matter how she act like she didn't want that, she's complicit to the actions of her servants so she's not that innocent.

While I don't think MC wronged her and her results were simply consequences of her rebellious action (changing the brides and confusing the bloodline), I do think it's her family that wronged her.

The two people closest to her treated her as a substitute for the death. They put all their guilt into her but she had to live in that shadow all her life.

It's them that raised her to be naive and entitled, to be demanding and s*upid.

[collapse]

If there's one thing that I hated in this novel, it's that majority of the male cast that have a significant role are either MC's relative (her brother) or a fish in her fishery. I mean, I do get why Bai Zi have feelings for her, they are technically childhood sweethearts.

But Ye Min? I don't get it. Anyway, he's groomer then! Dang it, a groomer and a s*umbag MC tag teamed in a way and end up kicking ML down ahahahaha. Poor guy poor guy XD

Crown prince - MC's first crush and ideal guy

Ye Min - definitely that real yandere guy. Like seriously he tried to kill MC multiple times lol MC give back as many as he dished out and even more, so it's all fair game to the two of them. (Surprise surprise ML doesn't think so)

Bai Zi - that silent loyal secondary (or third here) character that protect the MC in the shadows and is self sacrificing.

ML - well you know you know lol true love guy XD

It's just a bit hypocritical of the girls here that they're jumping and shouting when it's their turn to be deceived.

Spoiler

Like Wan Zhao seducing Wan Zhong to get information and she end up falling in that relationship and then she's so mad that Wan Zhong took advantage of her secret motives and wasn't exactly truthful in the relationship. Like gurl, aren't you so complacent that he fell in your tricks and now you can't take what you dish out?

What a fantastic read. It's a novel about secret identities (lots of them, not just the FL), romance, political intrigue and family conflicts. The heartbreak and angst is also so well written that I cried when reading about the ML's pain. Both FL and ML go through so much in this novel. There's an underlying major antagonist too in the novel. Every character in this novel is very nuanced, including the antagonists, and no one is truly good or evil. This makes it a great read.

FL:

I absolutely adore... more>> the FL, Qingge. I don't find her dumb at all. In fact, the FL is incredibly smart and cunning. As mentioned by the summary, she's a secret guard who works for a Prince. She has suffered a lot to be a secret guard. FL just wants to survive. She was a s*ave who had to fight for food with dogs, and as she grew up, bloodied and scarred - all she wants is a means to survive, to live freely for herself. The marriage to the Prince wasn't something she expected, but now that she's thrown into this, FL makes the best of it. She schemes and plans. FL's schemes are never so easy to figure out for the reader, it's gradually revealed in the novel and her long-term plans are SO GOOD. Seriously, she's so cunning.

FL is essentially kind. But life isn't that easy and she knows kindness can't feed people. So she can be ruthless and kill her enemies easily. She cannot let her guard down or others will harm her. FL lives a dangerous life. The only time she was ever soft and sweet, is only towards the ML when she was in disguise. Later on, ML truly understands FL's stubbornness and drive and HE SUPPORTS HER. Love that for them.

Her past:

Spoiler

This is super spoilery. But as we read the story, we find out that FL is not just a s*ave. She was the daughter of a famed tribal King. She was sold off by her own biological mother. FL seeks revenge on her family.

[collapse]

ML:

ML is initially depicted as arrogant, kinda male chauvinistic vibes. BUT! He's a total greenflag. ML did not want to marry this "noble wife - Xiahou Jianxue" in the beginning and he is sarcastic towards her at first. But as ML falls for his wife, he's super doting and tries to cater to her every whim. He would do anything for her, and removes all his harsh edges for his wife.

He is harsh towards his subordinates though, which is FL is her original identity. ML wants his subordinates to work as they should, and he is tough with the punishment if they fail. He's a scary boss. FL feels so torn because she's afraid of him in her original identity, but as his wife, she gets fully pampered by him.

ML is possessive but he's not the bad type of obsessive possessive. He's not even very black bellied. He's just born as a Prince, very high ranking, very smart, and thus, very arrogant and rebellious.

THEN the total changes comes over as he figures out that he's been played with, betrayed. ML is FURIOUS. Obviously he hates being betrayed. But ML is truly hurt. This is when the angst comes full force. ML goes through the stages of grief. And finally when the anger removes his rebelliousness, his arrogance - ML kneels down and cries several times, praying for his wife to come back to him.

ML is also a good father! Which is rare in CNovels. He truly loves his son and takes care of him so well.

Luckily it is a HE because otherwise I think the ML might actually die from heartbreak.

Psst. ML's actions in the Xiahou family and towards the real Xiahou Jianxue is so scary, cruel but also omg what fantastic faceslapping. Poor Xiahou Jianxue but she kinda underestimated the ML and what he can do.

Some very angsty scenes about ML missing FL -

"So he finally lay down helplessly and buried his face tightly in the baby's soft blanket.

He cried and trembled, "She is cruel and ruthless. She is in Yuning City, but she doesn't even want to look at you. She wants to find another husband and have children for others... This liar!"

I wanted to tear her into pieces, but I also wanted to grab her shoulders and ask her many questions harshly."

"Prince Ning bent one knee and half-knelt down, with the edge of his exquisitely crafted robe scattered among the grass. He buried his face sullenly in his hands, and the jade belt in his hair fell from his shoulders and landed in the bushes beside him.

He is like an abandoned child who can't find a home."

"He couldn't even bring himself to think about the details of the past. The minute he thought about it, he felt so painful that he suffocated, convulsed, and his body twisted and deformed."

His pain is so real y'all. I feel so bad for the ML, but I could see why the FL had to do what she did.

Other characters:

Every character in the novel is interesting and with distinct personalities and backstories. They're never just good or evil and are very nuanced. The antagonists are also not totally s*upid, some may make foolish decisions but they're all very determined in the path that they choose.

Ye Mi:

The Master of the Qianping Pavillion. Thousand Shadows Pavillion iirc, it's the ML's Secret Guard Force name. Ye Mi is the Master of all the Secret Guards and ML's good friend. He basically trains them all to be submissive to the ML. Ye Mi's character is.... so weird, so interesting. He's one of FL's antagonist when she's trying to cover up her identity. I hated him so much then felt pity for him.

Xiahou Zhilan:

Another pitiful two-faced character. In a world with no wars, a stable dynasty - he could've been the top scholar, striving for the good of the nation, making achievements... But he was born in a place that values viciousness and strength more, forced to make bad decisions... I am sad for how he ended, but that's the way it is.

Basically many, many interesting side characters. Even hateful Nanny Luo, Bai Zhi...

Storyline:

The romance between FL in her fake identity and the ML is SO SWEET and romantic in the beginning.

It's so sweet and full of dog food. ML truly adores the FL. The s*xy scenes are also well written eventhough they can be vague at times!! So HOT!!! They do it A LOT haha. Gosh, I was so cheated by the first 50 chapters with how sweet the novel is before it progressed to some major angst.

Despite that, FL in her real identity is a s*ave, and ML's subordinate. She's aware of the power dynamic and knows it is unequal and she could never be ML's wife in reality. This causes her a lot of pain.

Once the truth is revealed, FL reverts back to her secret guard identity while ML goes crazy trying to find his wife. It isn't just angst that is going on, as there's a major underlying plot.

Yellow Sect rebels threaten the nation, and ML is tasked to fight them. Four Noble Aristocratic Houses also threaten the Imperial House and power, and they finally collude with the Yellow Sect too. FL, in her secret guard identity is promoted and she's fighting alongside the ML. Not only that, FL's past identity (spoilery) is also in play and she acts as a mediator between two different nations.

FL is basically working on herself, gaining reputation. She's actually trying to become somewhat equal to the ML. She can't really do that since he's a Prince, but as the novel progresses, people acknowledge her hard work and finally she marries the ML in her real identity. Qingge, his former secret guard.

So, while there's romance, angst between the ML and FL. They're fighting against rebels and spies... FL is also working on revenge. There's some throne ascension drama as well. It's epic. READ IT.

Child:

He is the cutest. He brings light to both the FL and ML's life. FL feels so guilty towards abandoning her child, but she had no way to bring him up on her own, and he would be loved best by the ML. Later, the family scenes are so beautiful.

Extras:

ML going to different alternate dimensions to save the FL. Absolutely beautiful. Oh, but there's one where ML locks the FL up HAHAHA. It's the dark hearted ML who will never let her go.

Translation:

Fantastic translation! They made it so easy and nice to read.

I had to finish up the novel with MTL. Will reread this when translations are complete.

All in all, a fantastic read between a cunning scheming FL and an arrogant rebellious ML. Both fall in love, suffer a lot, and finally live happily ever after. <<less

Quite an interesting story full of twists and turns. Not always well executed but still interesting nonetheless. The romance is torturous at the least and passionate at best. The FL is smart and cunning but also dumb she is cold hearted but also soft hearted. She is full of contradictions. The ML goes through an evolution but once devoted remain fully almost insanely devoted to the FL.

The premise of the story is great and so far the plot lives up to its potential and more. The tingle of watching the ML fall for the FL and treat her with the utmost tenderness without suspecting she's actually the lowly secret guard he's been ordering around and exploiting for years without a second thought is delicious. Throw in the fact he's so happy with his little wife he wants to set up his spymaster with the secret guard the spymaster has been in love with, who actually happens... more>> to be the ML's little wife unbeknownst to both of them... Chef's kiss!

This is a story about love making fools of mortals, about fateful coincidences, about impossible desires, about two people becoming one against their will... It's everything you could ever ask for from a romance novel, and I cannot wait for the inevitable moment of truth when the FL's identity is revealed (or at least for the preliminary moment of truth when she disappears from the ML's life; that should also be fun!). <<less

Been using NU years now and I just added this novel as the 8th entry on my favorites reading list. It also made my Made Me Cry list

What makes the story so rich, other than the beautifully crafted plot, are the characters themselves.

The main story would span about 4-5 years, if I remember correctly, and the story shows that it's just enough time for the main couple to grow as individuals. I could gush out about how much I like both the ML and FL, but I'd rather mention... more>> that the side characters are all interesting too. Even those who didn't necessarily get much screentime had been fleshed out enough which makes their interactions/contributions to the main plot even more compelling. The author also controlled the pace amazingly.

And although the title kind of puts the ML more on the highlight, the story is mainly FL's journey and growth in so many aspects of her life. <<less

Great novel, really liked how not everything is what it seems. There are a couple of plot twist that will make you reconsider what you've read up to that point.

The ML is a nuanced character, the one who matures more. At the beginning he wasn't particolarly happy about his marriage and was rude and arrogant towards his bride, but very soon he starts to respect her and falls hard for her. When, after one year of what he believed was a loving relationship with his wife, she is replaced by... more>> another woman, he is rightfully furious. First, he fears she could be dead. Then, after learning she was paid to replace his wife, he goes through several emotional phases: for months he torments himself wondering what was real and what was fake, hates her for having deceived him and hurt his pride, then he just hopes she is well and one day she will come back and he will forgive her. When he leans her identity, he realizes he was wrong too and reflects on his past actions and character. Finally, he doesn't force her to be with him, giving her freedom to decide what to do in the future. I like him more than the MC.

The MC is very good at scheming and doesn't succumb to her emotions. She is sometimes soft hearted but is meticolous in her reasoning and actions and always thinks ahead with a clear goal in mind.

one minor spoiler
Spoiler

Overall I think she was too ruthless with her revenge. She targeted a girl (I am vague on purpose) mostly because she wanted the girl's mother to suffer, making the girl suffers for months, driving her literally crazy. Was the girl a saint? No, you could say she was on the bad side but still, it was a bit too much.

[collapse]

I also liked how there is genuine affection between the ML and his brother, the crown prince, and we are spared from the usual fights between brothers for the throne. <<less

4. BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN.. The way author write this in many moment so poetic and has its own beauty and sometimes angst

5. Angst but acceptable bcuz MC is resourceful, smart and realistic

6. Each character has it's own development

7. NO ABRUPT ENDING! The ending is so satisfying <<less
