Many years later, facing the cover reporter of Time magazine, Yi Jiayi would recall the distant afternoon when the head of the serious crime unit took her to see the body…

At that moment, she heard the wails of the deceased, saw the face of the mu*derer, and gained the ability to mentally revisit the crime scene.

From then on, Hong Kong had one less civilian policewoman who spent her time gossiping over tea and dating after work, and gained a shining star in the police force who solved every case she encountered.

Head of Serious Crime Unit: How did you know he was the mu*derer!?

Yi Jiayi: Because it was a rainy night (omitting the reasoning process, 800 words), so there is only one truth…

The mu*derer trembled, his face turned pale, speechless, surrendered, and resigned himself to his fate.

Yi Jiayi thought: I’m sorry, all of the above was made up.

As the saying goes, explanation is just a cover-up, and a cover-up is just storytelling!

Solving a case is like solving a math problem; others derive conclusions based on known conditions.

She just knows the answer directly, and the process of solving the problem relies entirely on fabrication…

Acting, pretending to be a detective, deceiving the mu*derer… resorting to all sorts of extremes, it’s really difficult!

Ming Pao Reporter: The police force in Hong Kong calls you “Female Zhuge”, saying you are both intelligent and close to supernatural. What do you think, Officer Yi?

Yi Jiayi: Haha, I’m just an (extraordinary) ordinary person.

Reporter: It’s said that your home was vandalized by two thugs, and even the Flying Tigers were mobilized.

Yi Jiayi: Haha, that’s just the daily routine of righteous officers protecting ordinary citizens.

Hong Kong Daily Reporter: It’s rumored that the sons of Hong Kong’s wealthiest, the rising young stars, and… are all pursuing you? Which one do you prefer?

Yi Jiayi shivered at the thought of the wrath of the Jealous King, not daring to be careless. She sat up straight, facing the camera, and said firmly:

“It’s all rumors! As a detective dedicated to the cause of justice, my only concern is to uncover the real culprit and ensure the safety of the citizens. I have no time for romantic affairs.”

This work has received high acclaim on its original publishing platform, JJWXC, and I'm enjoying it thus far. As someone who grew up watching TVB dramas, this story hits me right in the nostalgia feels. The FL possesses a unique gift: the ability to glimpse the final moments before someone's demise upon encountering their corpse. This supernatural talent adds a layer of intrigue to the story, especially since how much she can see varies depending on the parts and how fresh the body is. Starting her journey as a clerk... more>> within the police department, she rises to the prestigious rank of detective, finding solace and camaraderie within her team—a bond akin to family. Each case is meticulously presented with a blend of logic and systematic investigation, leading to satisfying resolutions. Unable to overtly identify the culprits, she adeptly pieces together clues and evidence to link the mu*ders to their perpetrators.

While her ability is a central aspect; she relies equally on her intellect, diligence, deep understanding of human nature, and sharp deductive skills. Her compassion and empathy make her more than just someone with supernatural abilities. Though the suspense may be somewhat subdued by the FL's ability to recognize the faces/certain characteristics of mu*derers, the intrigue lies in witnessing how each case unfolds. The mystery is what initially draws readers in, but it's the heartfelt connections FL shares with her family, team, and people she encounters that keep them hooked. It's the warmth and depth of these relationships that make the story shine. The romance looks to be slow burning and the ML is the captain of the team. Will edit this review if anything changes as I read further into the novel. <<less

This type of novel is such a rare find and I'm mad that I left this in my reading list for so long.

Strong FMC? Check

... more>> Very engaging and beautifully written plot? Check

Perhaps the most endearing characters I've read in a novel in a long time? Check check check.

It has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions the past week since I picked up this novel. One minute I'm laughing with both MC's real and found family and tearing up a little due to how heartwarming they are, the next minute I'm feeling wound up like a coiled spring due the very formidable criminals our MC is facing that day.

Anyway, brief synopsis:

Spoiler

This is a novel following the growth of an "ordinary" policewoman who one day upon seeing a corpse, is suddenly able to glimpse the last moments of that person's death. She uses that power to catch all kinds of criminals ranging from impulsive mu*derers to serial killers. The ML in this novel is honestly the best. He is so supportive and never tries to stop MC in her endeavors in the name of protection. I have to say, I was not expecting that last chapter. Let's just say the author writes certain scenes like poetry 🤭

This is a really well-written detective novel that really evokes the spirit of Hong Kong police dramas. I used to love watching Forensic Heroes and this really brought the nostalgia back.

Yi Jiayi is a fantastic female lead. She has courage, empathy and perseverance in spades and seeing her transformation from a happy-go-lucky clerk to a detective steeped in justice and empathy is so satisfying. Her powers are the trigger but it's her own sense of justice that pushes her to learn actual police techniques to best use her power and... more>> reverse engineer lawful evidence. There are also cases where she can't actually see the killer's face so the answer isn't always clear to her either.

I also enjoy how well-written everyone is. Even if there's jealousy or resentment, it never boils over to ridiculous face slapping. Once she proves her worth, people naturally start to respect her. These aren't canon fodder, they're people who feel normal emotions both positive and negative.

Her family + found family are all very nice to read about. They're all well rounded and get their own bits of screen time. They add a lot of warmth to the story.

Romance is a massive slow burn but there's so much mutual respect and genuine friendship it's still nice to read their interactions. I haven't read to the actual romance 3/4 in although they're both aware of their own feelings.

Also the funniest modern backword compatibility I've ever read
Spoiler

the superiors are really impressed by her Microsoft word and formatting skills and ask her to give a lecture on writing a proper report.
