How to Survive as the Academy’s Villain

Description

I transmigrated into a novel that I was reading.

“But of all people, why did it have to be Kamon Vade?!”

The problem here is this: the character I transmigrated as was a third-rate villain who appeared at the beginning of the original story, but after he had been accused of attacking the imperial princess, he disappeared and left the stage.

“Haah, fine. The novel never said that I died anyway. So, I just need to somehow hold out and endure in the academy, right?”

But…

Maybe because I refused to exit the novel, ‘death’ keeps following me around.

‘Motherfxxxer, this is like the fantasy novel version of Final Destination!’

Damn it, I have to survive somehow.

And I will! No matter what!

Pushover MC with large amounts of plot armor.

MC is a whinning teen, complaining how the world is out to get him while doing nothing to improve himself. He could study to learn magic or combat but all he does is say that he wants to stay in his dorm room and do nothing. He could just leave the academy but is afraid of being killed by unseen forces. Wants to stay at the academy but doesn't want to study. Wants to have money to buy stuff and pay tuition but... more>> doesn't want to work and complains when the debts are due.

He goes out to adventure because the plot forces him with the excuse:"get this artifact or you'll die" twice in a row, until I had enough of this boring mess. He doesn't use magic because of mana channel blockage or something similar which is also the reason he's always dead unless a new mcguffin is found. Still, when challenges appear that he can't win, even without any skills, there's some deux ex machina to solve his problems, like a switch to flood the room where he's losing a battle, or a strong character holding a mana drain artifact until he passes out instead of just dropping the thing.

The MC also can't use magic, sucks at theory, which is a mix of hard math and physics, but somewhat was able to cast advanced magic at once when needed. The magical blockaged was fixed by the mcguffin orb but the MC's ignorance and lack of proper magical knowledge was not.

The previous guy might be a villain but at least he put a minimum amount of effort in anything, which this lazy and boring MC has not.

There is no plot in over 60+ chaps except "MC will die without Mcguffin and he must get it while everyone hates him". Most characters are cliche, unlikeable with one-trait personalities and no motivations. The magic system has been non existent so far, with it's only explanation being "hard physics and math" while the author pastes gibberish equations to 'explain' how hard it is.

This is a bad copy of "The Extra's Academy Survival Guide" but without the hardworking MC, the interesting characters and no mention at all of the original game/novel plot. <<less

I don't usually rate novels this early, but the author has spent the entire time of this novel so far doing nothing but showing in great detail how awful the protagonist is being treated and how he isn't accepted anywhere, then his shelter, food, and clothing are secured in about two sentences.

The protagonist himself is a painfully boring and half-hearted character so far, the setting is awful using the excuse that "the author" had poor writing, but... there's only one author here... And none of the other characters introduced seem... more>> interesting or fun. It wears on me to read a story where the bad stuff gets focused and the good stuff is glossed over... <<less

I'm giving this a five for novelty.

It's a standard setup, our protagonist transmigrated into a book he read's mob villain character in an academy setting except for once his life actually sucks and he is treated like a villain.

He's disowned by his family, doesn't have any money or useful items, he has an awful reputation that for once actually feels like it affects him, he doesn't have a system, and he's a fish out of water that doesn't remember his past or know much about the day-to-day details of the... more>> setting.

His character is supposed to be a magical genius but since he transmigrated into his body he fails to grasp something fundamental about magic and can't view or manipulate it even when he goes out of his way to be tutored in the most basic of basics. His only bonus so far (apart from knowing the narrative) is that he was able to memorize some textbook information on magic with dedicated study relatively quickly but he can't apply it practically. This naturally makes his life difficult in the generic fantasy academy.

Socially he's an outcast. He doesn't have any friends or subordinates. When he manages to be helpful in an exam and do well his fellow students mostly still view it as him messing with them. They aren't very grateful as a result. People react to him with either terror of being victimized by an notorious unstable bully or with contempt. Random non-students who know of him by reputation treat him poorly. Sometimes misleading him or serving him in a realistic disgruntled employee way; technically doing their job well enough to not get fired but not being actively helpful.

If like me it sounds interesting to read a mob villain transmigration where it is actually a difficult set of circumstances to be thrown into instead of a minor setback or excuse to feel like an antihero, give it a read. I find it a breath of fresh air and I'm curious to see how it develops.

I was wary when I saw the translation was by Fenrir as in the past they've put our some shoddy stuff but happily this specific translation seems above average with not much to complain about. <<less

Not recommended. The vanity and plainless of this novels is impresive. Novels full of cliches are even more fun than this one.

The personality of the protagonist is to carefree and disociated with his situation. His willpower is near 0 and even is plans and strategies are full of holes and meaning, working only because the plot reaquires it. Or in other words, it is fuelled by at least 70% of plot armor.

Now the rest of the characters are really plain, they don't even make it to 2d, they barely reach... more>> 1.5d being generous.

I gave it an opportunity after reading that in later chapters it got better. But I only see the same. Even if some things happened, the personality of the MC never changed, neither is form of though or plans.

Moreover it is really infuriating to read, but in the bad sense. There are some novels that are infuriating and frustrating but later they give you a rewarding sesation when the currents change. In this novels there is no rewarding sesation, even when the situation turns around.

Spoiler

The better example is when he manages to summon magic for the firts time at the semminar. It is as flat as a table, and lacks common sense. The logic of the author is very flawed, after 4-5 days of travel didn't he have time to practice before reaching the venue? Utterly frustrating.

[collapse]

Is one of the firts time that I feel like I just wasted my time reading a novel. I'm not giving it 1 star because the translation was good.

MC is braindead, spineless, and naive, and doesn't learn. Everybody hates him and acts like a psycho. Except the guy the original body tried to kill or fight or whatever.

He refuses to put in any effort mostly just lounging around in his room. He does the bare minimum. And gets constantly crapped on by every other character.

Spoiler

his mana is sealed for no reason and the only way to fix it is to use end game items, which he learns from an actual psycho who only told him that so she could dissect him. Before that he put in no effort to try to fix it at all until he was forced to by a psycho princess who was told he can't use magic? (Why would that be even be a thought just because he hasn't used magic in a while)

This novel is the equivalent of torture p*rn for the author, and it's not enjoyable to read, except the two times he stand up for himself. And 80+ chapters after he gets a cheat item, and then still continues trying to be a lazy piece of garbage while constantly being in danger and doing nothing about it.

This novel is literally one step forward, alot of steps back. <<less

Honestly, I often enjoy these kinds of stories (In the style of 'The Extra’s Academy Survival Guide' etc). But it has truly been an awful ride to get through this book. Most irritating of all, the world is against the protagonist. Not in a cute way of "haha so many enemies"; no, every single person he comes across hates him because his previous character and works actively against him. If that were all it might still be enjoyable, but he gets pushed around without doing/ being able to do anything,... more>> he just accepts it all. No progression in power to be noted another thing that might have made it semi- bearable. And lastly, all characters - without exception, are awful. I mean I have no intention to keep reading the story.

Honestly, I randomly found this novel and rushed the first 10 chapters, but it's more fun than I thought so I kept reading till now.

The first thing that makes this novel so surprisingly enjoyable and captivating is the MC settings. The MC here in this novel is not OP, he's actually quite a pushover. He doesn't even have any cheat skills or systems, everything he has is the body of the original character (talent) and his knowledge of the future. Aside from that, he struggles to survive any ordeals coming... more>> his way. When he's cornered, I automatically thought: "Now something cheats skills or outburst will happen to save the MC", but NO, NOTHING HAPPENED. He either gets saved by someone or loses the battle cleanly, without any cheat skills or such. :) This makes me engrossed in the novel in a pretty strange way since it's just something reasonable, realistic, and familiar, but not clique like other possession novels.

The only thing I quite dislike is the pushoverness of the MC. Since he's exposed to many life-threatening dangers (and being deceived many times, how naive), he's very careful and calculative (he learned his lessons), but maybe his impression of the original novel is too immense, causing him to doubt and make use of the people (characters) around him even though some are actually good people, and they help him. This makes the MC kind of heartless in my eyes, probably because he hasn't seen the people around him as completely human yet, and just characters in a third-rate novel.

One thing, I like is how the author always pushes him to interact or cooperate with the villains of the original novel, and he realizes they are actually not villainous but just foolish and too naive or incompetent. This makes the interaction between the MC and other characters interesting. Overall, the novel is good, it's like a fresh, new, familiar yet not clique or mediocre work. I'm looking forward to new chapters. <<less

The title, synopsis, and first chapter of this story feel like an almost exact copy of The Extra’s Academy Survival Guide, but the overall tone is very different. If I had to summarize it I'd say this story is like that one but on hard mode instead of easy. For example in this story people in general are a lot more spiteful. Usually with this kind of premise the transmigrated MC just has to deal with a bad reputation, but the heroic characters aren't likely to actively seek revenge. In... more>> this story though, people hold grudges. Some of them just do slightly mean things to the MC while others try to ruin his life.

While the MC isn't totally helpless he's honestly pretty close for the first fifty chapters or so. It takes a while for him to unlock magic. Now he sort of has ways to defend himself but early on in the story he pretty much just had to endure. Some of the reviews call him a pushover for that but in most of those situations it didn't really feel like there was more he could reasonably do.

Overall this story isn't bad but it is the kind of story that can be frustrating to read. People typically read isekai fics for wish fulfillment but this story genuinely feels like the world is out to get the MC a lot of the time. <<less

This is a pretty decent and refreshing take of the 'reborn as a third rate villain' genre, because as of chapter 139, most people still hate him. I've read at least 50 of these novels with the same premise. And at least in 95% of them, the MC will be OP, have a harem, and have gotten rid of the villain title before chapter 20.

Of course this novel isn't without some pretty big flaws; our villain MC has absolutely no agency. Instead of MC seeking power, almost everything that happens... more>> in this novel is because "if you don't do this or that, then you'll be expelled". Which gets pretty tiring, because a lot of problems that occur are out of his control (ex, a villain randomly targets MC, screws up, swears revenge). It doesn't help that every time MC solves 1 problem, 3 more pop up. <<less

Another generic academy novel. The MC gets transmigrated into a villain character in a novel he read. He wants to live a quiet life but contradicts himself with every step. Every important person he gets involved with is somehow a beautiful woman. Full of avoidable drama. The fast food of web novels - fun if you don't think too deeply about it, with a theme and cliches that have been done to the oblivion. There's nothing new here, and every aspect is middling at best - be it characters (even... more>> the MC is boring), plot, world, etc. I find it weird how it still has a 4.3/5 rating. Honestly, any random frontier LLM could generate a similar story if asked for a generic Korean academy novel. <<less

I'm really enjoying the story of the main character trying to survive from scratch. I've read some raws, and it seems like he's slowly becoming the villain while gathering a group of neglected people. I really like the chemistry between him and Cecilia. On a side note, it seems like the author has a grudge against the main character. I can't help but feel sorry for him. It's like one trouble ends, and another one begins - as if trouble just can't stay away from him. In the end, all... more>> I can do is pity him while laughing at his never-ending struggles. <<less

I’ve read dozens of novels, but this is the first time I’m leaving a review, and I must say that this novel is a masterpiece.

At the beginning, the protagonist may seem overly peaceful, but as the chapters progress, the character develops step by step, almost embodying the concept of a villain. The protagonist keeps finding himself in trouble, and it feels as though the world is out to kill him. This creates thrilling, life-or-death confrontations that keep you on edge. I truly love the protagonist’s character and the mystery surrounding... more>> this story. I’m now close to chapter 200, and there are still so many unanswered questions, which makes me incredibly excited to see what happens next.

Aside from the protagonist, there’s another character that caught my attention—Kyle, the original hero of the story. His personality is full of life, but he can be terrifying at times. His background remains mysterious, and I love how he doesn’t see Kamon as a villain. I hope that he will become a close friend to Kamon

As for the other characters, the princess left a bad impression on me at first, and I disliked her, but as the chapters went on, I began to understand and like her. Then there’s Chelsea (I think that’s her name). She’s my favorite among the female characters. I love her personality and her relationship with the protagonist. Not to mention the council president—she’s amazing too.

I’ve written a lot, but to sum it up: give this novel a chance! It’s truly one of the best I’ve ever read, and I’ve been reading novels and manhwa for years. <<less

If you are a person even with an ounce of self respect, skip this absolute garbage of a novel. MC nether has brains nor brawls. He’s a pushover and the entire novel is him being ab*sed with him taking the ab*se. It’s the first time in my life I read this type of garbage.

This MC is considerably stifling. The characters who were exposed to the original villain are understandably disagreeable to him, but these people aren't saints either. The fact that an NPC tried to mu*der the MC by leading him into a deadly area, well, in my mind it's a fight or flight issue. Either MC immediately corrects his situation by escaping his villainous past, or fight to survive.

However, it took 10+ chapters to show off his naivety, 50+ chapters to get some kind of cheat item to correct his suddenly unusable... more>> body, and 63 released chapters of being suppressed by nearly everyone and lazing around to get a 'relaxing lifestyle' even though his life is being threatened constantly. To be honest, I give all KR webnovels 50 chapters since the length of a series can range from 150 to 500 chapters, and I think that's a fair assessment of what's to come. All the characters aren't interesting enough for me to keep reading, the academy's plotlines are weak, and the world building isn't very healthy.

2.5*. A perfectly middling series, read only if there's nothing else to read. <<less

4 stars for the story 1 for the amazing translation.

Novel takes an generic concept of a third-rate villain transported into an unfair scenario and transforms it with unique ideas. For example, normally the main character is super overpowered by now and his villian status doesn't affect the story that much. However, despite 90 chapters flying by, the MC still can only barely use magic and has to use his brain to solve problems rather than simply brute force his way through it. Also his status as an infamous character continues... more>> to haunt him, resulting in many near-death experiences and frustrating interactions with others. Another interesting part of this novel is the novel's protagonist. Kyle shows an mysterious interest in the MC, something that you tend to not see in these types of novels where they normally disregard the original main character. Minus one star for one of the heroines though, she is one if not the most female interest I have ever read.

Translation is also consistent and good, hats off to fenfir <<less

How to Survive as the Academy’s Villain, or HTSATV for short, is a fantasy novel centred around the protagonist, transmigrated into a novel in the body of Kamon Vade, a character portrayed as villainous in nature, and how he survives his time enrolled in the academy.

The author employs a straightforward premise, which appears to follow the cliche set piece of getting stronger continuously and getting allies everywhere they go but carefully subverting from the quick pace most of these kinds of stories seem to follow in order to present a... more>> more nuanced narrative. What I particularly praise about this novel’s approach is that it showcases the MC’s trials and tribulations in detail.

Early on, our protagonist gets pitted against unfair circumstances brought about the notorious behaviour of the original character he’s controlling, which he doesn’t even possess the full context to grasp onto, leading to those around him, especially academy students to be generally wary and distrustful of him.

However, just like the description of the novel, this is where the MC’s main strength shines, the willpower to endure. This novel, masked with despair and frustration in its early stages, is truly a tale of working with the cards you’ve been dealt with and overcoming adversity against all odds as Kamon desperately works against the original fate the world seems to have out for him.

The prose reads like what you’d imagine from a web novel, but I appreciate how it delves into character interactions and their thoughts, rather than solely focusing on Kamon himself, allowing insight into why characters act the way they do.

Character development by the others can be witnessed as the story progresses, with a blend of action and slice of life after the early chapters, with the story becoming complex but at the end of the day, still staying true to being what it is titled as, a fantasy academy novel. Anyways, I’d recommend this. It’s not outstanding in terms of writing, but it’s pretty entertaining, and I think that satisfies what makes a web novel worth a try.

(PS: I’m mainly rating this 5 stars to balance out the 1 star reviews in contrast because I feel this novel has potential) <<less

Never been frustrated with an idiot MC before, as much as this idiot who can't seem to grasp his situation and always goes "pardon, excuse me, huh, that's not it" as his trade mark sentence in every given situation, even a run away mental patient isn't so naive and s*upid, alright, maybe I'm just exaggerating cause I'm frustrated but you get the point, being spineless is okay for a while, but not managing to pick yourself up in 10 chapters and a week's time (that's enough time to realize no... more>> one likes you), what's the point of staying in the academy anyways? It would have been better to go elsewhere and hide until becaming stronger, or get a stable life if strength wasn't the goal. Also? How many times does this s*upid MC need to be fooled by others to get some defense mechanism cause I ain't reading that far. As the saying goes, "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me."

This is sad, I wished to give it a better rating even tho I've hated the first 5 chapters, but I kept reading cause I hoped it would improve but that seemed far off, alas, this is the 4th (maybe 5th) novel Ive dropped in secession. 😔 <<less

There are many things that are really subjective about this novel.

The main thing that everyone can agree on is that this novel is "novel". With a plot and characters that do not follow clishe and manage to surprise.

Everything else can be argued, so give it a try if you're bored and want a new twist to a overused trope.

... more>> Now my honest experience with the novel.

The characters are qute one-sided, with no seeming development as of yet, especially that is annoying with the main character. However, how the author utilises those same characters makes the read worth while.

The beginning is slow, extremely so, but that makes the "punch" stronger. (Hard to explain without spoiling.)

Here's a minor one.

Spoiler

The beginning is excruciating to read, the author manages to put our character into seemingly unsolvable situations time and time again. But when he manages to solve those problems, the outcome is very satisfying. Except for the times when it's simply luck. But those are in the minority the further you read.

[collapse]

This novel has potential. Especially the main character, who, at times, reminds me of Isaac (though scarcely and only in his actions and not in personality). In my eyes, being compared to the masterpiece that is "Isaac" is alone enough to keep an eye on this novel. <<less

The novel is not bad, pretty decent.

The problem is that the MC's actions are so naive and relatable, if we were in his situation, that it is a real turn off and frustrating.

Lets be real, a lot of us would think of the easy way out and deny reality if we were in his situations, while others would smarten up and adapt quickly to the situation. The annoying thing is that the MC is slow to accept his situation that everyone hates his guts and will do everything to make... more>> his life miserable if given the chance, due to all the thing the original body owner has done.

It isn't until the MC finally snaps and starts rebelling for things not going the way he hope, that the novel gets a lot better.

That doesn't start until

near the end of the dungeon test arc

[collapse]
, at chapter 23/24 is when he finally snaps and starts to get decent.

The novel doesn't get good until chapter 36, start of his rebellion against others.

Whether you can stomach through the early part of the novel really determines your rating of the novel. To me it is currently a 3.5, but I score it as a 3 due to how frustrating the beginning of the novel can be, but otherwise a 4. <<less
