Shen Hanxing enlisted in the military at the age of seventeen, suppressing the chaos of the sixteen states and expanding the territory of Dongning with unparalleled success. However, a nefarious conspiracy unfolded, leading to the crippling of both his legs and the infliction of a mysterious poison upon him. His elder brother fell off a cliff, his fate unknown.

Rumors spread that Shen Hanxing became cold-blooded, bloodthirsty, and brutal. Everyone avoided him as much as possible.

The emperor chose a wife for him, and the illegitimate daughter of the Lin family, Lin Xingxue, was deemed compatible with Shen Hanxing based on their astrological signs. With an imperial decree, Lin Xingxue married into the residence of Jinning Hou as a celebratory event during illness.

On the day of the grand wedding, he sat in a wheelchair, looking towards the young girl with an indifferent expression.

Lin Xingxue suppressed her fear, held onto his hand, wrote the characters for “husband” on his palm, and silently said his name with her lips.

The skin on her fingertips trembled faintly as she, both frightened and determined, moved closer to him. Her pair of eyes were pure and clear.

Afterwards, the imperial physician asserted that he had at most one year left to live. Lin Xingxue waited until there was no one around before daring to cry.

Shen Hanxing listened outside the room for a while before finally pushing the door open. The young girl’s eyes were swollen from crying, and she didn’t dare let him see.

He took a handkerchief and gently wiped away the tears on her face, casually asking, “You don’t want me to die?”

“But if I live, you’ll have to stay by my side for the rest of your life. Are you willing?”

“Willing!” The girl’s voice was firm, without a hint of hesitation.

Shen Hanxing chuckled lightly. Perhaps he believed it, perhaps he didn’t.

Later, he indeed fulfilled his words from that day. They became inseparable, sharing their lives together until death did them apart.

He seized control of the world, transferring the power from the ruler. Holding her hand with determination, together they ascended to the highest position, causing everyone to bow before them. For the rest of their lives, no one dared to disrespect or mistreat her again; just as he had vowed to protect her for a lifetime.

This was a nice, short read. The author was able to put quite a bit of storytelling in a short 57 chapters.

The translators did a pretty great job, and I appreciate the work that they put into this.

The FL is a quiet but strong character who, threw thick and thin, had her morals and stuck by them. It was nice to see that when she let something go, she really let it go. She was not allowing anyone to misunderstand her. Very nice.

Although be warned, she is more demure than... more>> I would have expected, considering everything she went through as a child, it made sense.
Spoiler

(Watched her mother die; had to beg her father to try to save her mother, which led to her mother still dying; she was almost mu*dered by her stepmother's lover; went mute; was almost killed by assassins, plus her maid died protecting her, and more. The way she acts isn't that shocking).

The ML was understandable, not the nicest person when he and the FL first met, but he was never cruel. We could see, as the FL did, that he was just shaped by the horrible things that happened to him. He lost

his dad, then his mom, and then his brother, and then he was captured/tortured and lost the use of his legs.

He then woke up to find out that he was married while he was asleep.

The romance between the two main characters was nice to see and felt organic. They didn't magically fall in love with each other. They spent time together, found similar interests, and found that they liked each other.

The main story was okay, honestly, it felt like the main story was supposed to be about their romance, but then the author decided to add in the

Spoiler

royal family to have some tension. Adding them in wasn't bad, but it didn't feel like it added anything important to the story. I feel like any family could have been the antagonists and would have had more of an effect. The royal family's plotting was... disappointing.... they were the royal family, why were they struggling to destroy 1 singular family.

[collapse]

Overall, not bad. If you want a short read with a nice build-up romance between the leads, then give this a read. <<less

A mute FL and a handicapped ML, brought together by fate (actually by evil step-mom's conspiracy, but ya know, dramatic intro *drum rolls*)

FL is mute by accident (to know what accident, read the novel)

ML is handicapped by accident (to know who caused the accident, read till the end)

... more>> Cutie Lin Xingxue and Charming Shen Hangxin together are fluffy lovey-dovey.

The characters are very simple 2D, nothing too complex, however full of potential (which didn't get realized much)

The focus mostly remains on Xingran and Hangxin, their gradual growth of affection towards each other. Xingxue's love stemmed from life-saving grace of Hangxin, and Hangxin's love grew from how easy FL is to be bullied.

Spoiler

When FL was 9, she got attacked by assassins (to know who sent the assassins, read the novel), and ML came riding on a white horse (jk) and saved the FL. However, FL thought Gu Yan saved her, because he claimed it was him. Now why did he do that? I wonder. Anyway, FL had snatched away ML's jade tablet hanging from his waist when they were riding horse back to her home, and kept it safe since then.

[collapse]

Gu Yan is the most useless character in this whole novel, the reason behind his existence is still a mystery to me (to know why, read the novel). The author surprisingly gave him lots of screen- time (I mean, word-count). He's weirdly indecisive. He says he loves Lin Xingxue, then again feels soft-hearted toward Lin Xingran because he thinks she saved his life during some stormy night in a temple (to know the actual story, don't bother looking in the novel nothing is explained).
Spoiler

And as you might have guessed, it was not Lin Xingran but Lin Xingxue who saved him, and Gu Yan gets to know it after he has married Xinran and tons of thing happened.

[collapse]

ML Shen Hangxin is not only handicapped but also has poison and Gu (not Gu Yan, but insect Gu) in his body. And the chance of his recovery is basically close to nil, but a miracle happens (to know what miracle, read the novel).

The whole novel is quite enjoyable, and though there are a few cliche storyline, it's not monotonous. All the conspiracies separately seem rather predictable, but together they're intriguing and the story flows smoothly. The novel could have been explored in a more detailed manner, with all the sub-plots that had been introduced but not delved deeper into.

Overall, it's a good read. <<less
