Jiu Hui was just an ordinary garlic chive spirit. Before she left the village, the other yaos in the village told her that some humans were racist, so she must never let others know that she was a yao.

In the world of self-cultivation, there were many immortal sects. Some sects were good at refining elixirs, some were good at sword cultivation, and some were good at divination. Only the sect that Jiu Hui worshipped was not only incapable of controlling yao monsters, but also had no sense of existence in other aspects.

Jiu Hui asked her master, “What has our sect relied on for the past two thousand years?”

Her master’s expression was profound, and her gaze was distant. “It all depends on gou*.”

Gou*?
TN: MC heard the wrong word, her master’s gou is slang for outlasting others by hiding/preserving strength, her gou is for dog.

I greatly enjoyed reading this, especially the MC's shenanigans and shamelessness. Although I wasn't satisfied with the ending, it is still a good novel. I'm debating whether I should give a long review. The other reviews here have much more information about the plot if you want to try this novel.

I adore how much the MC's village did for her. It's funny that the male lead wants to be a zhuixu for her. He wants to be a son-in-law for her family, specifically her husband. He acts like a lovesick... more>> puppy who always indulges and spoils her. He developed a green tea personality due to their Senior Brother's books to gain her affection. Most of their romance is his one-sided love for her, but she favors him more than others. They only got together officially towards the end. <<less

Me: the world is cruel and unyielding : (

Me: omg new yue xia die ying novel :D

If you've read 'ascending do not disturb' (YXDY's first cultivation novel), 'I am Average and Unremarkable' follows a similar tone and even structure but with enough differences to set it apart.

Similar to her more recent works, it's overall much lighter and more comedic but without sacrificing too much depth. It pokes fun at cultivation tropes (master-discple relationships, dramatic tragic love triangles, demon-human relations) but also questions if the root of all these tropes would... more>> really be people blinded with love or just selfish people doing selfish things.

IAAAU in particular is more on the concept of sacrifice for the greater good. Is it right to ask one person to sacrifice all for the sake of the world? Is destiny fixed or can it be changed? As always, the answer lies in friendship and comaradarie. If ascending is about the relationship amongst various sects than IAAAU is more on the relationship between demons/monsters/humans.

The cast of side characters all have some level of depth and backstory. They might get introduced as tropes but as the story progresses, you get to see their emotions and they become alot more alive. Unfortunately, due to the big cast, some side characters remain very side and are more static.

MC - first impressions are she's young, cute and well-raised. She's actually a bit more cynical than she initially appears but still lively and kind. Very much for the people because she's been treated well by the people. She's not my favourite of the YXDY MCs but she's a fun MC.

ML- I love him he's so cute. He's basically an untouched piece of jade that learns from MC and the world and slowly learns to just be. I really like how his story is important to the overall plot. He tends to accompany MC but when I really like the points when the story focuses on him. Despite his sad backstory, is actually very kind at heart. It's so cute how he learns 'bad things' like pretending to be injured to be pitied from the MC and his sect. Is proud to be MC's 'lackey' and wants to be her village's 'son-in-law'.

Romance is slow but honestly it's fine. Rather than a dramatic love story, it's about two people who spend all their time together and have a tacit understanding and will always speak up for the other. Even if they're not romantically together, the story doesn't suffer from it.

This novel isn't perfect and sometimes the multiple plot thread entangle and get confusing. To be frank, I didn't really understand the climatic battle and the final antagonist confrontation. I mean I get it but it's also confusing and brings up some earlier story points I didn't think were relevant. Around chapter 60 the story felt like it was a bit draggy and honestly, the demon storyline wasn't very exciting for me.

However, I did enjoy the overall themes of this cultivation novel. Paranoia and power will always tear people apart but warmth and love will make the world a better place. <<less

Finally a new novel from Butterfly!! Thanks to the translator for picking it, I beg you to not drop it please T.T If you have a lot going on irl just take a break and slowly translate it.

The story has a similar taste to Ascending, do not disturb (Wich is one of my favs). A subtle comedic undertone but a lot going on in the background.

You should definitely wait for the author to finish translating, it’s worth it to read such a fluid translation! So grateful carpreads picked this up!

Plot: Simple yet intricate. Light hearted without being boring. Always a good read when Yue Xia Die Ying writes.

Our little garlic chive Jiu Hui: Ultimate con-man. Those who wish to learn the art of making a paper cut into broken bones and family debts should worship her as their master. The #1 little overlord. The true tyrant tamer/brat defeater. Who doesn’t she know? Need... more>> help burying a body? She’s got a guy. Need the eight treasures of hell? The beautiful Demon Empress Dowager will hand deliver it. In her past life, she was a mafia family head. A mobster. She brought these skills into this life as she bags and beats opponents without ever letting them know who beat them half to death. She’s also a beauty but this is just an added bonus. Those who know her call her Young Master with respect, those who love her call her little senior sister.

Our ML Zhi You: “I am little senior sister’s lackey. I wish to be a married in son-in-law. Woof.” <<less

Hahaha let me just get out of my system before I continue reading this.

I get second hand degree embarrassment from her antics.

Another masterpiece from my favorite author.... Loved the characters and the plot with all my being... The author's writing never fails to give me another perspective to look at human nature, it gives me a chance to know both the selfishness of human nature and the selflessness of it... It always teaches me to think twice. not only from my perspective but from the other side as well... Bu Ting is a complex character, who thinks that it is okay to deceive anyone and sacrifice the lives of a few... more>> people to save the greater majority which he thinks is more worthy, but he forgets that the lives of those sacrificed matter, their opinions matter and they are worthy... Sometimes I pity him but other times I just loathe him... Kudos to the author who created this wonderful world and its characters; and the translator who did his/her utmost to deliver the true emotions of the words... Thank YOU.... <<less

First half was a good read, but it slowly got boring for me, I dropped it when the MC went back to visit her village. It was heartwarming, but it's also very boring.

There isn't much logic, cultivation wasn't very focused on, the MC and ML could easily beat people higher than their own levels, and they seem to be able to get to whatever cultivation level they wanted to.

The main selling point is the comedy, how the MC cheat people left and right, she is a professional in touching porcelain... more>> and scamming people.

I gave 4 stars because I enjoyed the first half, but if I wanted to give a real rating, it would be 3. <<less

This is an absolute gem, blending compelling characters, immersive world-building, and a storyline that keeps you hooked from start to finish.

The MC is a delightful mix of adorable and badass. Her strength lies not just in her abilities but in her heart and resilience, making her a standout protagonist.

The male lead, on the other hand, is both pitiful and endearing. He is strong and capable, yet burdened by a tragic past and an unshakable sense of duty. And a perfect zhuixu.

The romance between him and MC is subtle yet impactful.... more>> The romance takes a well-deserved backseat for most of the story, allowing their individual growth (especially ML's emotional growth) and the overarching plot to shine. <<less

I don't know why but at first I didn't get to enjoy the novel too much, but I still was reading and it became very interesting after the plot started to open.. I started to like this one too as I thought it's going to be like the other novel from the Author, though I gave 5stars, I didn't like the ending as I feel it was too rushed but still this one is a good novel

Relaxing, fluffy story from one of my favourite authors. The world is full of positive characters and the cultivator sect is relaxed and heartwarming (like the xianxia/xuanhuan world of Ascending, Do Not Disturb).

Initially, I thought the FL was a cute little innocent lead with a mysterious history (like the MC in Don't Discriminate Against species). However, she's actually a wonderfully black-bellied, scheming wolf in sheep's clothing (like the FL in The Times Spent in Pretense).

The plot does slow down towards the latter half, but I still appreciated it as a... more>> rare xianxia/xuanhuan novel with a reasonable female MC.

For readers who get confused by the ending, SUPER, SUPER, SPOILER ALERT:
Spoiler

It seems that the world itself is tested by tribulation lightning and prelude disasters.

The last time it happened 500 years ago, huge sacrifices were made by the cultivation world, and the immortal tree yao was killed and made into immortal cauldrons that suppress the world's disasters.

The ML is a living battery, able to absorb insane amounts of spiritual energy and use it to charge the immortal cauldrons to keep the world safe.

The FL was supposed to be reborn as the next immortal tree, but that requires the parts of the previous immortal tree that were made into the immortal cauldrons. If she took them out, the cauldrons would fail and the world would plunge into disaster. So she chose to remain as a garlic chive yao to protect the world. She's still OP, though.

At the end of the plot, they realize they don't need the continual use of the cauldron/ML/immortal tree to prevent disaster. Instead, if they can only withstand the tribulation lightning long enough, the heavenly disaster would pass on its own.

At that point, the cauldrons break, the different peoples unite to protect the world, they manage to pass the tribulation lightning, and the world is restored/peaceful again.

I enjoyed this cute Mary Sue story. MC, Jiu Hui, has a natural goodness and maturity that brings out the goodness of others and makes situations better. There is a ML but romance isn't the main plot.

There are many side characters and the plot has some twists.

This is a real spoiler...

Spoiler

MC is the young master of the yao clan. She is a garlic chive but can become the divine gan tree if she recovers the bones of the previous gan tree. The bones were used to produce ten cauldrons. These cauldrons were infused with spiritual energy each year to prevent the earth's calamity.

The person who infuses the energy is ML, Immortal Lord Fuguang aka Zhi You. ML had been "imprisoned" on Fuguang Mountain since he was a baby. His role is to collect the world's spiritual energy for the cauldrons.

About 500 years ago, he found a garlic chive when he went looking for his mother. He took it back to Fuguang Mountain and raised it. But 18 years ago, it disappeared. So he dug out his heart and made his other self, Zhi You. As Zhi You, he went looking for the garlic chive while Lord Fuguang was also able to stay on the mountain.

He met MC and joined a sect with MC. He was able to know the goodness of the world and fell for MC. The funny thing is he learnt how to be a white lotus by reading romance novels, written by their senior sect brother, and gain MC's affection. 😂

A lot of stuff happens in the plot so I'll summarize it that ML was able to permanently leave the mountain and the world was still able to be at peace. And ML achieved his dream of marrying into MC's family. 🥰

And yes, MC was ML's lost garlic chive. A cultivator used a soul summoning spell that caused MC to disappear and end up being found by her village elders. She was then adopted and spoiled by her elders.

This a fun yet lighthearted read. It reminds me a lot of “Ascending, do not disturb, ” the FL is kind but not overly so. She understands the hardships of the common people and disdains the haughtiness of immortals even if she was one herself. She’s compassionate to those who deserve it and an utter menace to don’t. She’s an icon, and I love how the ML supports her in everything she does. More than anything, I adore how protective she is of our adorable and precious ML (our precious... more>> boy who shouldn’t have suffered because of some people’s belief in fate bleh). <<less

Such a fun light hearted novel, yet with a thread of heartache, some light face slapping and of course, commentary on the hypocrisy of the righteous cultivators. As others noted, reminiscent of Ascending Do Not Disturb, in that FL masters, elders and sect members all love and dote on her, but the FL is much more shameless and hilarious! Love her and her little cutie pie of an ML! Everyone is super cute and tsundere, even the evil ones have some measure of redemption. Great translation. Fun, fast easy read.... more>> Definitely recommended! <<less

One of my favorite authors' recently written novel caught my eye so I gave it a go. And I kinda have mixed feelings.

Let's talk about the pros first.

... more>> The storyline, itself, was great (except the end, which I'll talk about later). There's not much plotholes. The twists and turns were also interesting.

The female lead, Jiu Hui, was humorous and easy-going. Her antics were a delight to read.

Even the male lead, Zhi You, made my eyes wet with tears. He just wanted some love and freedom. So glad that he got to meet all the senior brother and sisters of the Wangshu Pavillion, and most of all, meet Jiu Hui😭😭

I loved the side characters! Special shoutout to Nan Feng and Shiyi.

The emotional scenes also brought tears to my eyes many times over. I can't get over these😭😭

Even the Shenhuang Village was fascinating. I loved the bond between all the yaos.

Dahuang and the squirrel yao have my heart.

Now, let's talk about the cons.

The ending? Rushed! It felt like the author didn't give too much consideration of how it'd end and she just wanted to be done with it.

The romance often took the backseat. Except for some scenes, there was barely any romance. The fluff between the main leads was so less that it even got overshadowed by the tragic love stories of the side characters. The bits that I liked about the romance part was only because of Zhi You's backstory and his sacrifice and preserverance.

The novel as a whole was overly idealistic. If you like grey morality in your reading, then it's not for you. Honestly, because of the absence of this element, I wanted to roll my eyes at times. True, Bu Ting was wrong and I'm glad that he got his just desserts. But we could have explored his psyche instead of straight-up labeling him as the bad guy.

It's mostly a happy-go-lucky novel so I guess I can't expect much. And the author even said that she was getting out of a writing slump after a sad thing happened in her life, so I guess I understand where she's coming from.

Would I recommend it? Maybe.

Will I reread it again? Nope!

Overall, I am kinda disappointed but I also enjoyed my reading time. Anyway, still looking forward to reading her other novels in the future!

The translator was also great! <<less

As expected from one of my favorite authors, I Am Average and Unremarkable seems to be an easygoing read but it actually deals with the deepest and darkest human emotions and feelings.

Both of our protagonists were victims of the so-called righteousness — one was forced to be the savior of the world by using her heart, flesh, and bones to refine the cauldrons while the other one was forced to act like a filter to protect the three realms and bear for the whole world. Both Jiu Hui and Zhi... more>> You deserved to live their lives the way they wanted to and should not have been expected to sacrifice their own for everyone.

Sacrificing one to save many should never be the norm because that one person has their own feelings, emotions, and desires to live their own life. Believing that it is okay to sacrifice one person is so bigoted when everyone should contribute for everyone’s well-being. The safety of all beings should always have been a collective responsibility of every person and not just depend on one person.

The resolution of the story was so complex and detailed. I loved it so much. If this novel was not able to make you a better being, then there might be something wrong with you. I always believe that I learn new things in every novel I read, one of the many things I have learned from here is that you make your own fate and you should never let others tell you otherwise. It is your own life so you should pave your own path. <<less

You've reached a safe heaven: great writing, endearing characters, funny dialogues, devoted ML and OP MC, who is too good at pretending to be a very unremarkable defenseless blade of grass, when she wants to, which isn't necessarily all the time.

If it's your first time with this author, well, you are in luck, if you love witty humor, quirky characters who are absolutely endearing and wholesomeness without angst, then do yourself a favor and make your way to their other period novels too, after this one.

Thanks for the translators!

Overall, this was a fun read. The main character is very lively. She is well-liked and overpowered, and she joins a sect that is atypical causing many funny scenes. Romance is secondary to the story, so don’t read the book expecting much intimacy. My main complaint is that the ending was a bit underwhelming. I personally feel like the big reveal I was expecting never happened, but if you like slice-of-life type books, you may like that.

As always a very very delightful read. With a bunch of misfits and sweet cp. Every character is interesting and the plot is very solid. With the standard mystery, adventure, humour, heartwarming story that leads to epic battles and sweet ending, this novel is a must read. The only downside is that it’s too short! Lol.

Highly recommend read. Thank you

ML is in a one-sided crush/love for 90% of the novel, so there was no fluff. First romance novel I've read that didn't have even a kiss.

Regardless, it was an okay read, even though it was a bit confusing for me towards the end. After reading the author's note in the final extra, I finally realized why this story just felt a bit disjointed to me. I guess the author was going through some difficult times. It also didn't have as much personality as Ascending, Do Not Disturb, which I loved.
